Today's Headlines: With about an hour to spare before his self-imposed deadline to bomb Iran "back to the stone ages," Trump TACO'd — again. A last-minute ceasefire was announced, with Iran declaring victory and agreeing to allow U.S. ships safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks in exchange for peace negotiations starting in Pakistan on Friday. Iran's 10-point demand list includes a permanent end to the war, lifting all sanctions, and a $2 million per-ship toll through the Strait to fund reconstruction. Before the TACO, Trump posted that "a whole civilization will die tonight," Israel hit 8 bridges across Iran, the U.S. struck Kharg Island, oil hit $117 a barrel, and gas hit $4.14 nationally — up 40% since the war started. Iranian civilians formed human chains around power plants and bridges to deter strikes. The markets tanked. Then Trump backed down. Oil futures immediately dropped after the ceasefire announcement. The DOJ — now run by Trump's personal criminal defense attorney Todd Blanche — has directed its civil rights division to open an investigation into Cassidy Hutchinson for allegedly lying to Congress during her January 6th testimony. Blanche said Trump has "the right, even the duty" to call for investigations into anyone he wants. JD Vance flew to Hungary to campaign for Viktor Orbán, put Trump on speakerphone mid-rally, and complained about EU election interference — while actively interfering in Hungary's election. A Democratic congresswoman introduced articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth for war crimes and reckless endangerment of U.S. service members, while Congress sits on recess. Health insurance stocks surged while everything else tanked after the Trump administration announced a 2.48% boost to Medicare Advantage payments — a gift to the industry everyone agrees is the worst. Trump's endorsed candidate Clay Fuller won Marjorie Taylor Greene's old seat by less than he should have in one of the most Republican districts in Georgia. Kanye West was banned from entering the UK, and the Wireless Festival was cancelled entirely — after losing Pepsi, Diageo, PayPal, and Rockstar Energy as sponsors. Their statement called antisemitism "abhorrent," but booked him anyway. David Waldman and Greg Dworkin are back to fight Trump chaos with their chaos. Like a lot of people right now floating outside Tehran and Basra, Singer-songwriter Country Joe McDonald was an enlisted Navy sailor. Like a lot of people right now, he gave an F-U-C-K about what we were doing, and now, sadly, whoopee, we are gonna do it again. The guy who cares the least about what we are fighting for is Donald K. Trump, as both problems and solutions make him equally angry. At least no new pronunciation guides will be needed for Iran's leadership, nor will anyone need to adjust their governance or diplomacy theories. Not that the US is expected to take into consideration… anything. We'll just commit our war crimes and be shocked when Iran commits theirs. Thousands are stranded in the area unless they're mogging with sufficient rizz... Polling indicates that Trump could neither mog nor rizz himself out of a paper bag. James Talarico can, however, and at almost Mamdaniesque levels… plus, James has JESUS. Take that MAGA! Trump should consider a nice track suit to match his hat the next time he attends the transfer of killed US service members. Ok, the DHS kidnaps, tortures, and kills a few people, but they'd never get in the way of spring break.  The President feels their pain but refuses to sign any bill until Congress passes his anti-voting anti-trans act and gives him three scoops of ice cream. A woman born in the US has her immigration status put under review. She-Wolf of the DOJ, Pam Bondi announces that state bar associations can't investigate misconduct by lawyers but hasn't figured out a way to keep Congress from investigating her misconduct. Meanwhile, this administration still holds a grudge for Cassidy Hutchinson and if they can't lock anyone else up, she might have to do.

Mea Culpa welcomes back Asha Rangappa, Assistant Dean and Senior Lecturer at Yale University's Jackson School of Global Affairs and a former Associate Dean at Yale Law School. Prior to her current position, Asha served as a Special Agent in the New York Division of the FBI, specializing in counterintelligence investigations. Asha has published op-eds in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post among others, and has been a legal and national security analyst for CNN, as well as appearing on NPR, BBC, and several other major television networks. In this episode Michael and Asha delve deep into the J6 hearings and the Supreme Court. 

1. Oil Prices & National Security Lower global oil prices weaken hostile regimes like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela by reducing their revenue. The Trump administration aims for a “sweet spot” oil price ($60–$70/barrel): Low enough to hurt adversaries. High enough to avoid bankrupting U.S. independent oil producers. If prices drop into the $40s, it could collapse small oil producers in Texas and the Permian Basin. 2. Venezuela’s Oil Infrastructure Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, but decades of mismanagement have destroyed its infrastructure. Estimates from oil executives: Increasing production from 1 million to 3 million barrels/day could take 10 years and require $100B+ in investment. Even going from 1 million to 2 million/day would take 5–7 years. Gulf Coast refineries can process Venezuela’s heavy sour crude, but expanded imports would mostly affect Canada and Mexico, not U.S. light-sweet crude producers. 3. Cuba’s Economic Crisis Cuba historically survived on financial support from: The Soviet Union (until its collapse). Venezuela under Chávez/Maduro (oil and money). With Venezuela no longer able to support Cuba, the island is in economic freefall. Mexico is currently providing oil that helps sustain the Cuban regime. The Trump administration may pressure Mexico to cut this supply, potentially pushing Cuba toward political collapse. 4. Jack Smith & January 6th Investigation Smith is accused of leading a politically motivated prosecution against Donald Trump. He allegedly relied on questionable or disproven testimony, notably from Cassidy Hutchinson. Hutchinson’s dramatic claims (e.g., Trump lunging for a steering wheel) were not confirmed by eyewitnesses. Jim Jordan challenged Smith in hearings, accusing him of: Using unreliable witnesses. Conducting a partisan, anti-Trump investigation. Targeting large numbers of Republicans with subpoenas. 5. Crime Statistics & Trump Administration Policies Nationwide murder rates reportedly declined ~20% from 2024 to 2025. Approx. 1,400 fewer murders. Major cities showing decreases: Chicago: 30% NYC: 20% Baltimore: 31% Oakland: 33% Washington, D.C.: 31% (after National Guard deployment) Other violent crimes also declined: Motor vehicle theft: ↓25% Robbery: ↓18% Aggravated assault: ↓8% Law enforcement stats cited: Violent crime arrests: ↑100% Gangs disrupted: ↑210% Fentanyl seized: ↑31% Missing/abducted children located: ↑22% Human traffickers arrested: ↑15% Significant increase in arrests of espionage suspects and fugitives.
