Have you ever had a moment where you woke up and suddenly realized that everything you thought you knew was an illusion? Maybe it felt as though the world was behind a veil, and for the first time, you began to see things differently—things you hadn't noticed before. That moment of clarity, of awakening, thus perhaps the beginning a transformation. This is powerful testament to the importance of surrendering to divine guidance while staying grounded and anchored to one's true self. My guest today shares her view from behind the veil. Dr. Deborah Carson, a transformational leader whose journey bridges professional expertise with deep spiritual wisdom. Following a successful career in social work she experienced a profound spiritual calling that has expanded her work into new dimensions. Through her "Fear to Freedom Project" channel on YouTube, she began by highlighting remarkable individuals and their unique gifts to the world. As her own spiritual journey deepens and unfolds, the channel is naturally evolving into a platform for profound spiritual conversations and wisdom sharing, documenting both her transformation and the collective awakening she witnesses in others. Creating alongside her spiritual team of ancestors, angel guides, and spirit guides, Deborah is weaving together ancient wisdom with modern healing practices to prepare for global outreach. Her approach combines her mental/behavioral expertise with sacred practices including meditation, yoga, oracle work, ancestral divination and more. Interviewing Eric Flores, with the Freedom Project in Seattle, WA, presents a new view of how people can change their lives with help, time, and a change in circumstances. Host Joy Gilfilen talks with him about his experience growing up as a teen, living inside the juvenile correctional system, and living in an environment where gangs, drugs, and shootings were common. It was just part of his life and a learned behavior from his surroundings. Eric didn't know another life or way of being until he came to a different state, had different mentors and opportunities, and found a different way of understanding the world. Seeing his children for the first time from inside a prison cell changed him forever. He saw how his decisions were affecting their lives, and he made a commitment to change. Today, Eric has become a mentor and part of the counselor and coaching team to help people reenter the world outside the walls. He has been learning and teaching others how to build bridges to a better life when people are anticipating their release.

What is the purpose of higher education?  Is it primarily to prepare us for the jobs of the future?  Is it to ensure the leaders of tomorrow hold the right opinions on important issues?  Is it to provide a safe haven for the pursuit of Truth?   Thinkers on the Right have held differing—sometimes incompatible—views on the purpose of higher education.  Joining Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is returning guest Luke Sheahan to explore these arguments and how conservatives might respond to the rise of radicalism and wokism on college campuses.   About Luke Sheahan   From Luke's website: Luke Sheahan is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Duquesne University and a Non-Resident Scholar at the Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society (PRRUCS) at the University of Pennsylvania.  He researches the intersection of First Amendment rights and political theory.  Sheahan's scholarly articles and reviews have appeared in The Political Science Reviewer, Humanitas, Anamnesis, and The Journal of Value Inquiry and he has lectured widely on religious liberty, freedom of speech, and freedom of association.  He is author of Why Associations Matter: The Case for First Amendment Pluralism.  He is writing a second book tentatively titled “Pluralism and Toleration: Difference, Justice, and the Social Group.”   From 2018-2019, Sheahan was Associate Director and Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Freedom Project at Wellesley College and from 2016-2018, Sheahan was a Postdoctoral Associate and Research Fellow in the Department of Political Science at Duke University.  He received a PhD and MA in political theory from the Catholic University of America and a B.S. in political science from the Honors College at Oregon State University.  He is a five-time recipient of the Humane Studies Fellowship from the Institute for Humane Studies, a 2014 recipient of the Richard M. Weaver Fellowship from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI), and a 2018 recipient of the Leonard P. Liggio Memorial Fellowship.   In 2022 the Russell Kirk Center announced the appointment of Dr. Luke C. Her journey to these heights is a tale of true grit and determination. Starting with a flying scholarship at 17 and winning acrobatics competitions as a student, Mandy faced a significant hurdle when she initially failed her mandatory computer-based tests. But, undeterred, she fought her way through, showcasing her exceptional flying skills and earning her place in the skies. But Mandy's expertise isn't just about flying fast jets. She's also a skilled Human Factors facilitator, offering invaluable insights into decision-making under pressure, risk-taking, and the crucial role of humans in complex systems. These lessons are not just relevant in the cockpit; they're incredibly applicable to the business world and personal challenges alike. Also, Mandy has put her experience to great use off the field. She co-founded Inspiring Women for Work, helping women regain confidence and reenter the workforce after taking a break. Her work here is a reflection of her commitment to empowerment and leadership. In this episode, Mandy shares her incredible experiences and the lessons learned from life in the fast lane. In 1953 sociologist Robert Nisbet published his most famous work The Quest for Community, arguing for the necessity of association to the human experience and the harm inflicted upon communities when they are deprived of their function.  Traditional conservatism has long upheld Nisbet's teachings as a reminder that we are not purely material beings with strictly economic interests.  Josh welcomes Luke Sheahan to this episode to discuss his efforts to pick up where Nisbet left off in fighting for the viability and flourishing of human associations, how the courts have gotten off-kilter in rulings regarding our freedom to associate, and why associations matter to each and every one of us. In July of this year the Russell Kirk Center announced the appointment of Dr. Luke C. Sheahan as the fifth editor in the history of The University Bookman, originally established by none other than Russell Kirk, seeking to redeem the time by identifying and discussing those books that diagnose the modern age and support the renewal of culture and the common good.   You can follow Luke on Twitter @lsheahan
