“The Tragic Life of Classic Cinema Star Gail Russell” (082) - 4/07/2025 Hollywood legend has it that ethereal beauty GAIL RUSSELL was discovered after a Paramount Studios talent manager picked up two hitchhiking Santa Monica high school boys who told him all about the "Hedy Lamarr of Santa Monica High School." Allegedly, he then tracked down Russell at school and arranged for a screen test. The rest, as they say, is Hollywood history. If only it had been that easy. Russell, who was painfully shy and had no interest in a career as an actress was pushed in front of the camera by her ambitious mother and the executives at Paramount who saw dollar signs in her startling blue eyes. This week, we explore the life and career of one of Hollywood's most tragic beauties, GAIL RUSSELL. From wiki: “The Uninvited is a 1944 American supernatural horror film that was directed by Lewis Allen and stars Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, and Donald Crisp. The film is based on Dorothy Macardle's novel Uneasy Freehold (1941), which was published in the United States as The Uninvited (1942) and deals with a brother and sister who purchase a house in Cornwall, England, that is plagued by paranormal events. The film is part of a cycle of supernatural-themed films that began appearing in the mid-1940s. Dodie Smith began writing the film, and Frank Partos was brought in by his friend, associate producer Charles Brackett. Brackett wanted to have the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock but could not organize plans with him, so Allen directed it. Filming began on April 16, 1943; Allen found working with Gail Russell, who was inexperienced and began crying several times, to be the most difficult part of filming.”NEXT WEEK: Santa Sangre (1989) Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

For this Paramount 1945 episode, we look at a couple of male melodramas: The Man in Half Moon Street, a Gothic B-movie starring Nils Asther, "the most beautiful man who ever lived," according to Elise, as a scientist who becomes unscrupulous in his pursuit of eternal youth, and Salty O'Rourke, a Raoul Walsh-directed hit starring Alan Ladd as a racetrack gambler who manipulates an unruly young jockey. The movies also boast fairly substantial love interest parts for Helen Walker as a socialite who sympathizes with Asther's Ubermensch impulses and Gail Russell as a schoolteacher who's caught up in Ladd's schemes. We dive into the question of how to create audience sympathy for a villain-protagonist and the curious nature of the Ladd phenomenon. Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s: THE MAN IN HALF MOON STREET [dir.

What's Halloween without a classic ghost story? You'll never have to know, because for this episode I'm revisiting one of my all-time favorite haunted house films: THE UNINVITED directed by LEWIS ALLEN and starring RAY MILLAND and RUTH HUSSEY as a bickering brother-sister duo who, on a whim, purchase that old abandoned mansion on the edge of that spooky cliff without ever dreaming the place is very, very haunted. And whatever evil force haunts those halls seems hellbent on destroying their shy but beautiful young neighbor, played by GAIL RUSSELL. With their hands tied by the Hayes Decency Code, the filmmakers had to "queer code" even more of the story than I realized the last time I covered this movie, so it turns out there are more secret lesbian characters in that house than there are ghosts! JOSH KREBS and LIZ RICHARDS from BLOODY DATE NIGHT are here to class up the show and help me sort through THE UNINVITED's many mysteries, both on and off-screen, as well as it's heartbreaking real-life tragedy. So get ready for some early gay Hollywood history, a lot of inappropriate giggling and one hell of a scary ghost story! _____ EVERY DAY IS HALLOWEEN A Fundraiser for New Alternatives For Homeless LGBT Youth Donate directly at (http://bit.ly/squadqueenz) This episode was recorded with SQUADCAST: Remote Interviews for Professional Podcasters. Welcome to Hollywood and Beyond Podcast with Cincinnati host Steven Brittingham Gail Russell Biography: with Geoffrey Mark A Hollywood and Beyond Special Presentation / Episode Produced, Edited and Hosted by Steven Brittingham Contact Steven anytime with your comments and feedback at: hollywoodandbeyondshow@gmail.com Created, Produced, Edited and Hosted by: Steven Brittingham Guests Booked by: Steven Brittingham At 18 years of age, she signed a long-term contract with Paramount Pictures. The studio was drawn in by her beauty and had high hopes for her potential. Despite her extreme shyness, the studio took the approach that with acting coaches she would possibly become one of their biggest stars. Unfortunately, alcohol would be the choice of comfort to deal with shyness and anxiety at the most highest of levels. Several comebacks would be plagued by both mild and serious car accidents, periods of isolation, and an ongoing battle with alcoholism. Her name is Gail Russell. A career that included films “The Uninvited” (1944) with Ray Milland, and with John Wayne in “Angel and the Badman” (1947). Despite her remarkable accomplishments as an actress, she would eventually be released by Paramount Pictures due to fears her drinking was worsening. Gail Russell was only 36 years old when she was found dead in her apartment. What was found beside her speaks volumes of her emotional struggles. Did Gail Russell really want to be an actress? What was behind her chronic shyness that caused her so much distress in front of the camera? And what actually would make this silver screen beauty feel actual happiness and peace? Angel and the Badman (1947) is a very good western featuring John Wayne, Gail Russell, Harry Carey, and Bruce Cabot. I enjoyed the role that Harry Carry played and the backstory of the beautiful Gail Russell was as fascinating as it was tragic. Even John Wayne’s character had depth. The bad guys, led by Wayne’s drinking buddy Bruce Cabot, were realistic. This movie should be added to your’ must see list. We would love to get your feedback! Email HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!
