In this Paramount 1948 episode we dig deep to get the stories behind the stories of two great film noirs starring Ray Milland: The Big Clock (directed by John Farrow), based on a novel by Depression-era poet and Communist Party fellow traveler Kenneth Fearing, and So Evil My Love (directed by Lewis Allen), a historical noir/Gothic melodrama based on a novel by the prolific and many-pseudonymed Marjorie Bowen. We discuss the ways in which the source authors' viewpoints make for fascinating deviations from standard Hollywood treatment of capitalism and gender.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:      SO EVIL, MY LOVE [dir. It's a light week for physical media as we prepare for the onslaught of horror to arrive in October. The month does start off with a couple decent titles in the thrills department including a package Peter Sobczynski and Erik Childress catch-up on featuring the works of Lewis Allen. Paramount has put together the second of their “Scares” package which features at least one title worth getting in 4K that may also be more of a thriller than a horror film. Kino does deliver some witchy fun along with one of the best boxing films as well a young romance that may have you repeating the title of the episode. From wiki: “The Uninvited is a 1944 American supernatural horror film that was directed by Lewis Allen and stars Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, and Donald Crisp. The film is based on Dorothy Macardle's novel Uneasy Freehold (1941), which was published in the United States as The Uninvited (1942) and deals with a brother and sister who purchase a house in Cornwall, England, that is plagued by paranormal events. The film is part of a cycle of supernatural-themed films that began appearing in the mid-1940s. Dodie Smith began writing the film, and Frank Partos was brought in by his friend, associate producer Charles Brackett. Brackett wanted to have the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock but could not organize plans with him, so Allen directed it. Filming began on April 16, 1943; Allen found working with Gail Russell, who was inexperienced and began crying several times, to be the most difficult part of filming.”NEXT WEEK: Santa Sangre (1989)  Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

This Friday's "Friday Night Noir" on Vintage Classic Radio opens with a captivating installment from "The Screen Director's Playhouse," featuring the episode "The Uninvited" starring the illustrious Ray Milland. Originally broadcast on November 18th, 1949, this episode is an adaptation of the classic supernatural mystery film directed by Lewis Allen. In the story, Ray Milland plays Roderick Fitzgerald, who, alongside his sister Pamela, discovers that their newly purchased cliff-top house in Cornwall is haunted by mysterious spirits. This chilling tale delves into themes of love and the supernatural, creating an atmospheric thriller. Alongside Milland, the episode also stars Ruth Hussey as Pamela Fitzgerald and Donald Crisp in a supporting role, with direction provided by the original film's director, Lewis Allen, lending authenticity and a cinematic flair to the radio adaptation. Following "The Uninvited," the night darkens further with "Inner Sanctum's" thrilling episode, "Study for Murder," which first aired on May 3rd, 1942. This episode weaves a macabre tale of psychology and crime, where a brilliant psychology professor uses his insights into the human mind to commit the perfect murder. As typical of "Inner Sanctum" episodes, the narrative is steeped in mystery and features a twist ending that leaves listeners questioning the nature of guilt and innocence. The cast for this episode includes Richard Widmark in a standout performance as the cunning professor, supported by a cadre of character actors from the era, which helps bring this dark story to life. Both episodes exemplify the golden age of radio with their stellar casts and engaging stories, making for a perfect evening of noir entertainment.

Lorne Greene played a duo part, his starring role as Ben Cartwright as well as a look-alike Hustler, exact replica of Papa Ben Cartwright. This was to be one of my favorite roles as I played Dixie Wells, a break from the simple pretty girl parts and given a character that I hadn't ever played before. You might say I was a Seductress.I could slip into being a woman who'd been around and when I say "been around" I mean she'd worked in saloons and knew exactly how to entice men and wrap them around her fingers Big Time.Actually, you fellows are no doubt aware of this species of females, AREN'T YOU???As the character I was familiar with how to "work my feminine charms on my men as you'll surely pick up on & notice her strategies, etc. This was really a very fun part for me to play. And, If I may, the antithesis of who I was in real life. OH BOY!, this was a wonderful part Indeed and one I was excited to play...Going forward, the whole Cartwright family was exceptional, exuding warmth and was special because they represented very good and honest Americans. Each and every one of the actors in the Cartwright Family were Brilliant along with the devoted helper and cook Hop Sing played by Victor Sen Yung. Before closing this fun and interesting segment, I want to mention that I was also chosen to play another part or role on Bonanza that will entice you, my audience, friends and followers. You will see in a totally different Bonanza segment, the lovely and talented Linda Crystal and me together. The title is WARBONNET.Now, let's get right into it.Lorne Greene was wonderful and in my estimation, he enjoyed every minute of it. He would say to me during breaks, "this is a good switch for me. I can finally be a bad guy and surprise my audience.” I heard him utter some words under his breath, quickly looking at me saying, "you didn't hear that did you?" I said, "what"? he said good, you're not supposed to hear words that aren't meant for your ears. To tell the truth, I did hear it but I just wasn't going to go there...You know what I mean.Mr. Greene loved switching back from the honorable Ben Cartwright, powerful head of one of the biggest family ranch owner in the territory, to a swindling hustler bad guy and may I say he did it with a great deal of finesse.During lunch breaks, he'd go into his trailer but occasionally would come out and talk as he always had something to say but only when he was in the mood. Over all, he couldn't have been nicer and garnered a great deal of respect from all cast members and crew.Oh, I want to add something about a specific scene of so-called passion with Ben Cartwright playing a dual part as the bad guy imposter and me, as the conniving wench hoping to luck out and entice some attractive man with her sensual charms, and make some money to get away from being a simple saloon girl selling those charms. Her character had always dreamed of falling in love with a rich man. Thinking back to one day in particular, our Director, Lewis Allen, had become very interested in one scene he was directing. And since I was in that scene, I vividly recall from my vantage point that I could actually see our director's reflection in a mirror on the wall that no one else could see, just me. Especially, NOT Even from the cameraman's POV aka "Point of view". So YES, there was a passionate kiss I had with Ben Cartwright as the conniving look alike bad guy. And lest you forget, I was the only human being that could see the director's reflection in that mirror. Now, to this day, I believe that, for an instant, I saw the director's eyebrows kind of flipping up and down as if He Was not only enjoying but living vicariously through the Ben Cartwright romantic scene. It might have been a nervous tick but I Don't Think So.

Acercándonos a escuchar CDLA

Hoy escucharemos de Lou Reed, Walk on the Wild Side.

What's Halloween without a classic ghost story? You'll never have to know, because for this episode I'm revisiting one of my all-time favorite haunted house films: THE UNINVITED directed by LEWIS ALLEN and starring RAY MILLAND and RUTH HUSSEY as a bickering brother-sister duo who, on a whim, purchase that old abandoned mansion on the edge of that spooky cliff without ever dreaming the place is very, very haunted. And whatever evil force haunts those halls seems hellbent on destroying their shy but beautiful young neighbor, played by GAIL RUSSELL. With their hands tied by the Hayes Decency Code, the filmmakers had to "queer code" even more of the story than I realized the last time I covered this movie, so it turns out there are more secret lesbian characters in that house than there are ghosts! JOSH KREBS and LIZ RICHARDS from BLOODY DATE NIGHT are here to class up the show and help me sort through THE UNINVITED's many mysteries, both on and off-screen, as well as it's heartbreaking real-life tragedy. So get ready for some early gay Hollywood history, a lot of inappropriate giggling and one hell of a scary ghost story! _____ EVERY DAY IS HALLOWEEN A Fundraiser for New Alternatives For Homeless LGBT Youth Donate directly at (http://bit.ly/squadqueenz) This episode was recorded with  SQUADCAST: Remote Interviews for Professional Podcasters. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today’s guest is Patrick Phillips, author of Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America. His other works include Boy, When We Leave Each Other and Chattahoochee. His work has appeared in The NYT, WSJ and The Nation. Blood at the Root chronicles a southern county in Georgia, Forsyth County, where racism held sway for most of the 20th century. The impetus that gave rise to this long season in hell was an incident that occurred in 1912 and which we’ll talk about. Much of what is to a lesser degree still present in America is an attitude grounded in fear and anger and even now is being fomented in the current election cycle. Whether we talk about Ferguson or Trayvon Martin, or the incident the other day in which an unarmed black man, his arms raised in surrender was shot to death, point blank, by a female police office, while he was being tased is really not the question. Whether Black Lives Matter means anything to you as a motto or as a credo or as a symbol, or as an insult, what happened in Ferguson also happened in Forsyth County but to a degree much more evil and violent, reserving for the participants a seat in a much lower circle of hell. The epigraph of this gripping tale is an excerpt from Strange Fruit an uncanny and unnerving work, perhaps best heard as sung by Billy Holiday and written by Abel Meeropol under the pen name of Lewis Allen in 1937. Blood at the Root shines a harsh and unforgiving light on a time and place in America that we should all be ashamed of, yet the same horrible atrocities that occurred in Forsyth occur all over the world every day, some still by us. Where this leaves us, I don’t know, but perhaps we can gain some insights in today’s interview. Welcome Phillip and thanks for joining us today.

Where this leaves us, I don’t know, but perhaps we can gain some insights in today’s interview. Welcome Phillip and thanks for joining us today.
