Cisco Splunk: Agentic Observability, Token Economics and the Smaller War Room, Podcast, Cisco and Splunk are focused: helping customers bring the right information together, with the right context, so AI can be useful rather than overwhelming By Doug Green “The real opportunity is helping customers pull together all the different sources of data into an environment where they can understand when they need to pay attention, how to find and fix problems, and how to layer AI on top of that.” In this Technology Reseller News podcast, recorded at Cisco Live, I spoke with Patrick Lin of Cisco Splunk about the changing role of observability in a hybrid, AI-driven IT environment — and why the conversation now also includes token economics. As AI becomes part of everyday IT operations, enterprises are beginning to ask a new economic question: how much does it cost to reason over all this data? In an AI-native environment, every log, metric, trace, network signal and security event may become part of a larger decision-making process. That creates value, but it also creates cost. Token economics becomes part of the observability discussion because customers need to know what data matters, when to use AI, and how to get better answers without flooding systems with unnecessary context. That is where Cisco and Splunk are focused: helping customers bring the right information together, with the right context, so AI can be useful rather than overwhelming. Lin described how Cisco and Splunk are connecting observability, networking intelligence and AI-native workflows to help teams see across complex environments. A key example is the integration between ThousandEyes and Splunk Observability Cloud, giving teams the ability to understand whether a problem is happening in the application or in the network — and, if it is in the network, whether the issue is in the part of the network they own or the part they do not. That distinction matters. In hybrid environments, responsibility is often shared across enterprise infrastructure, cloud platforms, service providers, SaaS applications and third-party systems. Knowing where the problem lives can dramatically reduce the time teams spend in war rooms trying to determine what went wrong. Lin also pointed to Cisco Cloud Control and AI Canvas as part of a broader AI-native approach. Rather than forcing users to jump across separate tools and interfaces, Cisco is working toward a model where information from Splunk, Cisco platforms and the wider ecosystem can be brought into a collaborative environment. That includes human teammates as well as agentic assistants that can help teams reason across data, identify patterns and accelerate troubleshooting. For channel partners, Lin said the opportunity is significant. Customers need help bringing together data sources, building the right observability foundation and applying AI in practical ways. Partners can play a key role in making agentic observability real for customers by helping them move from disconnected monitoring tools to a more unified, intelligent operating model. The goal, Lin said, is not just more data. It is a “much, much smaller war room” when incidents happen. For Cisco Partners, that message is timely. As customers modernize applications, adopt AI, expand hybrid environments and depend on increasingly distributed infrastructure, observability becomes more than an IT operations tool. Peter Anthony is the co-founder of Perceptron Network, a decentralised data infrastructure purpose-built for AI. A crypto native since 2019, Peter also runs The House of Crypto — one of the fastest-growing crypto YouTube channels — where years of speaking with founders convinced him that the next wave of blockchain projects would be defined by real revenues, real users, and real-world utility. Perceptron, which merged with the 700,000-node BlockMesh network in mid-2025, is his bet on what he sees as AI's biggest unsolved bottleneck: access to high-quality, affordable, real-time data. Why you should listen Data, not compute, is the real AI bottleneck. Peter opens by arguing that while the market has spent the last few years obsessing over GPUs and compute networks like Aethir and Akash, the harder problem sits upstream — the high-quality training data AI models actually need is locked behind paywalls. OpenAI reportedly pays Reddit around $70 million a year, with similar eye-watering cheques going to X, and that pay-to-play economy effectively freezes out smaller AI startups. Research groups like Epoch AI project the stock of public text data will be fully exhausted somewhere between 2026 and 2032, and even Sam Altman now concedes data — not compute — is the binding constraint. Perceptron's pitch is that a decentralised network can fix this by turning users' idle bandwidth into a globally distributed vantage point on the live web, at roughly a 90% cost advantage to traditional centralised data providers. A thousand eyes, one vision. Perceptron's architecture combines Perceptron Nodes — a software client that sits quietly in the background of a user's browser or Android device and lends out unused bandwidth — with Perceptron Agents embedded in Discord, Telegram and WeChat communities, plus a human-in-the-loop Questing app where contributors annotate datasets. The point isn't to harvest anyone's personal data; it's to aggregate geographically diverse viewpoints of the public web. Peter walks through the use cases this unlocks: an e-commerce operator seeing how their products rank simultaneously in New Zealand, the UK and the US; a quant desk arbitraging cross-border discrepancies in gold, oil or crypto prices in real time; a crypto trader spotting a sentiment shift across thousands of Telegram groups before it shows up on price. Perceptron is already supplying data to Everlyn AI, a text-to-image and text-to-video platform that would have been priced out through traditional suppliers. Freshness, sovereignty and a universal basic data income. Peter makes the case that data freshness is becoming the decisive edge for frontier models, because a ChatGPT or Claude answering questions about a fast-moving crypto market on four-month-old data is flying blind. He also makes a pointed argument about annotation bias — that when a narrow set of labellers with their own agendas decide what a dataset "means," the models downstream inherit those opinions — and contends that decentralised annotation is the counter. In the hot-take round Peter calls himself a multi-chain opportunist who still holds Bitcoin as the anchor, argues we're in a 2020-style bull market (not a 2022 bear), and reckons the real 10-year story of AI is that it will displace a lot of jobs but open up far more opportunity for anyone willing to pick up the tools now — pointing to Claude Code as a live example of a non-developer being able to ship working software in minutes. His sci-fi pick: Avatar — fittingly, recorded the day before a trip to Zhangjiajie, the real-world mountain range that inspired Pandora. Dahlia has finally arrived in New Orleans, and she makes her presence known by possessing multiple civilians and giving a taste of her power in a fight at St Anne's. Meanwhile, it encourages Jackson to come up with a stupid plan, which he loops Hayley into. Luckily, double agent Aiden was able to sabotage it quite easily. Meanwhile, Klaus teams up with his former opps Mikael and Davina to hijack Freya's tools for a weapon to kill Dahlia (which Dahlia promptly destroys).
