“The Tragic Life of Classic Cinema Star Gail Russell” (082) - 4/07/2025 Hollywood legend has it that ethereal beauty GAIL RUSSELL was discovered after a Paramount Studios talent manager picked up two hitchhiking Santa Monica high school boys who told him all about the "Hedy Lamarr of Santa Monica High School." Allegedly, he then tracked down Russell at school and arranged for a screen test. The rest, as they say, is Hollywood history. If only it had been that easy. Russell, who was painfully shy and had no interest in a career as an actress was pushed in front of the camera by her ambitious mother and the executives at Paramount who saw dollar signs in her startling blue eyes. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. From wiki: “The Uninvited is a 1944 American supernatural horror film that was directed by Lewis Allen and stars Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, and Donald Crisp. The film is based on Dorothy Macardle's novel Uneasy Freehold (1941), which was published in the United States as The Uninvited (1942) and deals with a brother and sister who purchase a house in Cornwall, England, that is plagued by paranormal events. The film is part of a cycle of supernatural-themed films that began appearing in the mid-1940s. Dodie Smith began writing the film, and Frank Partos was brought in by his friend, associate producer Charles Brackett. Brackett wanted to have the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock but could not organize plans with him, so Allen directed it. Filming began on April 16, 1943; Allen found working with Gail Russell, who was inexperienced and began crying several times, to be the most difficult part of filming.”NEXT WEEK: Santa Sangre (1989)  Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

The Women (1939) The Women is a 1939 American comedy-drama film directed by George Cukor. The film is based on Clare Boothe Luce's 1936 play of the same name, and was adapted for the screen by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin, who had to make the film acceptable for the Production Code for it to be released.  The film stars Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Lucile Watson, Mary Boland, Florence Nash, and Virginia Grey. Marjorie Main and Phyllis Povah also appear, reprising their stage roles from the play. Ruth Hussey, Virginia Weidler, Butterfly McQueen, and Hedda Hopper also appear in smaller roles. Fontaine was the last surviving actress with a credited role in the film; she died in 2013. It is also important to note that even the animals and pets are all female.  The film continued the play's all-female tradition—the entire cast of more than 130 speaking roles was female. Set in the glamorous Manhattan apartments of high society evoked by Cedric Gibbons, and in Reno, Nevada, where they obtain their divorces, it presents an acidic commentary on the pampered lives and power struggles of various rich, bored wives and other women they come into contact with.  Filmed in black and white, it includes a six-minute fashion parade filmed in Technicolor, featuring Adrian's most outré designs; often cut in modern screenings, it has been restored by Turner Classic Movies. On DVD, the original black-and-white fashion show, which is a different take, is available for the first time. The Opposite Sex (1956)   The Opposite Sex is a 1956 American musical romantic comedy film shot in Metrocolor and CinemaScope.[3][4] The film was directed by David Miller and stars June Allyson, Joan Collins, Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan, and Ann Miller, with Leslie Nielsen, Jeff Richards, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood, Joan Blondell, and Sam Levene. The Opposite Sex is a remake of the 1939 comedy film The Women. Both films are based on Clare Boothe Luce's original 1936 play. Unlike the 1936 play and the 1939 film adaptation, The Opposite Sex includes musical numbers and features male actors who portray the husbands and boyfriends, whose characters were only referred to in the previous film and stage versions.[6] This alters the structure and tone of the base storyline significantly.   Opening Credits; Introduction (.37); Background History (42.13);The Women (1939) Film Trailer (44.51); The Original (48.16); Let's Rate (1:43.07); Amazing Design (1:59.54); Introducing a Remake (2:01.07); The Opposite Sex (1956) Film Trailer (2:01.41); The Remake (2:05.22); How Many Stars (2:44.07); End Credits (2:58.26); Closing Credits (3:00.39)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – copyright 2021. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial.  Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Academy Award nominated actress, Ruth Hussey, was born in Rhode Island? She struggled to break through as an actress and worked in Providence as a radio fashion commentator and wrote ad copy for a Providence clothing store for their radio spots. She finally started to make it big in the theater and then transitioned to movies in 1937. She got her big break as Elizabeth Imbrie in The Philadelphia Story opposite Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, and Cary Grant where she was nominated for best supporting actress. She continued to act until 1973.   Now for our feature story: Taxpayers, not town officials, will pay a $2,500 fine as part of a settlement aimed at resolving town officials' violation of the state Access to Public Records Act, according to the town attorney William J. Conley Jr., whose Providence-based law firm has served as town attorney since 2017, wrote to a resident on Tuesday and said the payment would come from the town budget. "Since your complaint against the town of Westerly related to official town business and complains of acts or omissions within the town's official duties in responding to requests made under the Access to Public Records statute, any assessment of a fine related thereto would be against a public body and would be paid by the town from its General Fund," Conley wrote in a letter to resident James Angelo, who filed the original request for documents and a subsequent Access to Public Records complaint to the state Attorney General's Office. Angelo was seeking documents related to town officials' decision to administratively subdivide the former Bradford Dyeing Association property as part of a receivership case that includes an effort to market the property. Administrative subdivisions are carried out by officials on paper in their offices rather than in public before the planning and zoning boards. In March, the state Attorney General's Office found the town failed to respond to Angelo's request within the statutorily imposed time frame, failed to provide a detailed response, and failed to inform Angelo of his appeal rights and therefore violated the Access to Public Records Act, The attorney general's letter stated finally that: "... we conclude that  the town's violations of the APRA ... were knowing and willful, or reckless,". Conley cited a town ordinance that indemnifies town officials "from all loss, cost, damage and expense, including legal fees and court costs," arising out of claims and settlements related to alleged acts committed within the scope of the official's duties. The same ordinance states that employees and officials will not be indemnified if the conduct in question resulted from "wilful, wanton or malicious conduct." Angelo, in comments he made to the Town Council during its meeting on Monday, said town officials should pay the fine. "It is my contention that the Westerly taxpayers should not be made liable for the cost of civil fines because of the APRA violation. Rather, the civil fines should be paid by the town officials responsible for violating the APRA," Angelo said. For more about the latest stories in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Sea Bags in Watch Hill. She was born in Alton and was a lifelong communicant of both Our Lady of Victory and St. Vincent de Paul Parishes. Theresa worked at Raytheon Co. in Boston, Mass. and then for many decades as a receptionist at Cottrell & Sons which later became Harris Graphics. During the Vietnam War she held leadership roles with American Legion Auxiliary / Downey Weaver Post #34. After retiring she spent her time with family and friends, traveling and enjoying numerous hobbies like making hooked rugs. In particular she enjoyed traveling with her long term partner Stanley Civco to visit historic sites like Mount Rushmore and Washington, D.C. While Theresa never had children of her own, she was loved and adored by hundreds of nieces, nephews and extended family members across the country. She took great pride in her family and was an active participant in their lives, always curious to hear of recent travel adventures, join family celebrations and support her family in any way she could. Theresa was someone who lit up every room and social gathering she attended. She was an animated storyteller that could entice laughter from even the most serious acquaintances. Her spirit was generous and her laugh contagious. She lived life to the fullest, enjoying summer lobster bakes and loved good conversation over a cup of coffee. Theresa was quick witted, kind hearted and a respected friend to many. Theresa will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure to have met her. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Theresa's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! What's Halloween without a classic ghost story? You'll never have to know, because for this episode I'm revisiting one of my all-time favorite haunted house films: THE UNINVITED directed by LEWIS ALLEN and starring RAY MILLAND and RUTH HUSSEY as a bickering brother-sister duo who, on a whim, purchase that old abandoned mansion on the edge of that spooky cliff without ever dreaming the place is very, very haunted. And whatever evil force haunts those halls seems hellbent on destroying their shy but beautiful young neighbor, played by GAIL RUSSELL. With their hands tied by the Hayes Decency Code, the filmmakers had to "queer code" even more of the story than I realized the last time I covered this movie, so it turns out there are more secret lesbian characters in that house than there are ghosts! JOSH KREBS and LIZ RICHARDS from BLOODY DATE NIGHT are here to class up the show and help me sort through THE UNINVITED's many mysteries, both on and off-screen, as well as it's heartbreaking real-life tragedy.
