Today we have a very special episode featuring founder Garrett Marrero, Scott Metzger, and Trent Tokos of Craft ‘Ohana / Maui Brewing, who took a minute to update our viewers on the latest relief efforts of the wildfire in Hawaii. Maui Brewing was founded in Lahaina (the epicenter of the fires) in 2005, and it is doing its part to help the devastated community, including the start of the Kokua Project, bringing brewers around the world together to brew a beer whose proceeds will go toward fire relief efforts. Max talks with Laurence Balter about how the general aviation community in Hawaii is flying relief supplies to help victims of Maui's wildfires. The town of Lahaina is served by just a single road, which has closed frequently since the wildfires began a week ago. Electricity and cell phone outages have also hampered relief efforts. Soon after the fires, local Maui pilots began organizing to fly supplies into Kapalua Airport, near Lahaina, but which is closed to most general aviation flights. The pilots received permission to fly into Kapalua, and began flying relief supplies to the airport. Balter and Maui Brewing founder Garrett Marrero organized the effort via text messages and social media, and flights began on August 11. The pilot group worked with the airport fire departments at Maui's main Kahului Airport. Firefighters and volunteers weighed and loaded supplies that were delivered to the fire station. The process worked in reverse at theKapalua airport, where local fire fighters unloaded planes and helicopters and arranged for the distribution of supplies to local victims in Lahaina. Laurence is flying his relief flights using the Cirrus SR22 that he usually uses for dual-led flying experiences, for pilots vacationing on Maui who are interested in flying a Cirrus and getting exposed to flying in Hawaii. He's also set up a Go Fund me page for people interested in donating to pay for avgas that volunteer pilots have had to pay for to fly the wildfire relief missions. I had the immense pleasure and privilege to have an interview with CEO and co-founder Garrett Marrero of the Maui Brewing Company during my vacation in Hawaii. I don't wanna spoil much of the interview but I do wanna stress that it is truly remarkable, in an industry that is still evolving like ours in Canada to see such a magnificent rise in the microbrewery industry like Maui's. The presence, innovations, and influence that Maui Brewing has in their localized market is truly the stuff of wonders and I think that a lot of microbrews could learn a thing or two, not just in those respects, but in terms of sustainability as well.As promised, I will link the other interview delving into a bit more of the origins of the brewery from Hawaii's Best podcast. It's a great interview and I highly recommend listening to a few episodes if you plan on going to Hawaii (and, of course, get yourself a couple of 6 packs on the beach of Maui Brewing limited releases). So, this lover of beer heard opportunity a-knockin’ and set out to create a local brewery that would craft authentically Hawaii-inspired brews, and Maui Brewing Company was born. Hawaii's Best - Guide to Travel Tips, Vacation, and Local Business in Hawaii
Garrett Marrero joins us on this episode of Hawaii's Best. Garrett is the co-founder of Maui Brewing Company in Maui, Hawaii. We get to hear how Maui Brewing Company started back in 2005 when Garrett was only twenty-six years old. His vision and dream started in San Diego, California, which turned into cofounding Maui Brewing Company in 2004 and officially opening its doors in January of 2005. Garrett shares how his passion for micro-brewing started. Growing up in a European family and coming along his Grandpa’s side helped Garrett develop a palette for a great beer at a young age. He knew his previous role in finance didn’t fulfill him the way his passion for beer and entrepreneurship did. We get to hear why Maui Brewery is leading by example with how their facility is built and operating, producing 100 percent of their energy on-site. Garrett shares with Bryan how this 82,000 square foot facility provides 1.2 mega wats of solar power to their primary location being fully grid-independent. After working with the State of Hawaii and receiving his small craft producers license, Maui Brewery not only produces beer but produces local soda, whiskey, gin, and now hard spritzers. If someone comes to Maui for the first time Garrett shares what to do and what not to do. From skipping touristy stuff to just grabbing a six-pack of their Blonde lager, poki, and relaxing by the blue waters of Hawaii in Maui. In this episode, we hear how Garret loves to unwind in a very cool high flying way. Listen in and hear about how his start on Maui started rocky and how it has developed since then. For brewers in Hawaii, the challenges of culture, resources, demand, cost of living and more are especially difficult and expensive. If necessity is the mother of invention, my next guest found a way to solve these problems, create a large distribution footprint and has done it all while being a steward of the community and the environment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeremy-storton/message

Today, things are slightly different. They have been named America’s #1 small business, employee over 400 people and are projected to earn over $20 million in sales in 2018. Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley poured determination and long hours into building Maui Brewing Company and were named 2017's Small Business Association's Small Business Persons of the Year. Guest Biography Garrett Marrero is Co-founder & CEO of Maui Brewing Co. Garrett makes sure to drink the local beer everywhere he travels. For him, great beer reveals elements of the personality of a place and, hopefully, reflects a vibrant part of the local economy. It’s also the reason why, on his first visit to Maui in 2003, Marrero refused to accept the fact that Maui’s “local” beer was actually made on the U.S. mainland and shipped to the island. An investment consultant with bachelor’s degrees in economics and international relations, and an associate’s degree in finance, he recognized an opportunity to create a niche product in an untapped market. A beach kid from San Diego, he also saw in Maui a chance to live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Garrett and his wife Melanie opened Maui Brewing Co. in January 2005 with a seven-barrel brewpub and 30 employees in the West Maui community of Kahana. Over a decade later, Maui Brewing is Hawai‘i’s largest craft brewer and one of its fastest-growing companies, employing more than 400 people, producing 53,000 barrels a year, and retailing its beers in 23 states and 10 countries.
