In this special episode to celebrate the 2025 Merrie Monarch Festival, we sit down with Kumu Hula, Karl Veto Baker, of Halau I Ka Wekiu for a heartfelt conversation that weaves together the art of hula and the spirit of aloha. Kumu Veto shares how his haumana prepare for Merrie Monarch and what it means to watch his dancers rise to the moment. He describes the 50th teaching anniversary of his mentor, Kumu Hula Robert Cazimero, and reflects upon the Hawaiian Renaissance that shaped a generation of cultural practitioners. In the spirit of aloha, Kumu Veto also describes his friendship with Pono Shim and how Pono became the Kahu of Halau I Ka Wekiu. As a businessman himself, we also dive into the intersection of culture and business as well as his hopes for a thriving Hawaii in which kamaaina have the opportunity to come home and give back to their communities. And of course, this episode would be remiss if we didnʻt get an exciting glimpse into the Halau's 2025 Merrie Monarch performances. Join us for a celebration of hula as a way of life. Join us on our journey to uncover what it means to think, act, and live aloha. The inspiration for this podcast is the late Pono Shim, former President and CEO of the Oʻahu Economic Development Board. His stories capture the essence of what it means to live aloha. He made it known that aloha is a lifestyle. It is not a solution to problems, a marketing brand or to be used as an advantage over anyone else. Aloha is to be honored and practiced. The name of this podcast is in reverence of Hawaiʻi's Queen Liliʻuokalani, who wrote: "To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two; in heaven there is but One.” Through these episodes, we seek to find that singular perspective, the one that is "above the sides" as we strive for universal peace. We welcome you to pause with us as we share the stories and voices of Hawai'i business leaders, educators and community members who have chosen to be lifelong students of aloha. Mahalo nui loa for listening.

In a world drowning in quick scrolls and shallow connections, how do we truly understand love and personal growth? In this episode of The True Love Knots Podcast, Maria sits down with June Dillinger, creator of Heart Cards, to explore how a simple card draw can transform relationships, workplace culture, and personal growth. June shares how her father's disability shaped her journey and inspired her to create atool that helps people pause, listen, and connect on a deeper level. She explains why true love and understanding start with intentional reflection and how Heart Cards are more than just a deck—they're a bridge to self-awarenessand meaningful connections. If you're ready to open your heart, this episode is for you. Standout Quotes:· “The more I share my talents and gifts with others, the more I have for myself.” · “If we can let our heart lead, miracles will happen.”· “Aloha is ‘alo,' meaning life, and ‘ha,' meaning breath. So, when you say aloha, you're sharing the breath of life.”· “When we pause and look at our mate, neighbor, dog, or someone we might be angry with, just pause. It's in the in-between space that everything changes.”· “There's not one negative card in the deck. They're all positive, and gently so. They nudge us to see more of the beauty within us.”Key Takeaways:· Practice the "pause" daily - take 60 seconds to genuinely connect with someone around you, making full eye contact and expressing authentic appreciation without distractions.· Start a workplace or personal ritual using the Heart Cards: draw one card at the beginning of your day/meeting to spark meaningful conversation and self-reflection.· Challenge yourself to notice body language in conversations - are you truly present? Adjust your posture, turn towards the speaker, and give full attention to demonstrate genuine listening.· Create a personal "love visibility" experiment: for one week, intentionally perform small acts of kindness or connection that make love tangible for others, tracking how it shifts your perspective.· Embrace the Hawaiian concept of "Aloha" - literally sharing the breath of life - by consciously infusing your daily interactions with genuine connection and compassion. *Announcements! The first STARGIRL in-person event is happening! Details will be announced on my Instagram first @emmaglennbaker — can't wait to share more and see you there!* In this week's episode, I introduce a brand new segment to the public: STARGIRL Rants and Raves! I welcome all listeners to send in a Rant or Rave on a Stargirl, person/persona you fixate on, or cultural event/moment that you love or hate. This first round was open to Patrons only, and we listen to my favorite three submissions here today! I talk about the many elements of her myth that I somehow inherited—her violet eyes, “married eight times to seven men,” her health issues, etc. I decide that although Liz Taylor is indeed beautiful, prolific, and messy, her real singularity lies in her Sturdiness: She is womanly, down-to-earth, and robust. We also discuss Camille Paglia's incredible fixation on Liz, and leaf through Liz's memoir/self-help/recipe book about her own weight gain and loss, Elizabeth Takes Off. Plus, I finally acknowledge the Chappell Roan phenomenon, praise Addison for her underwater Dhanurasana, and challenge myself to discuss the election head-on, rather than roll my eyes and look away. We got this y'all! Discussed: “Sabrina, Chappell, and Charli are suddenly stars. Don Ho, the famous Hawaiian singer, walked into Dave Kenney's bar and said, “I like the way you operate.” I don't know Don Ho, I don't know that much about Don Ho, but I do know that Don Ho seems to have excellent judgment. I, too, like the way Dave Kenney operates. Originally from England, Dave's work in the hotel industry eventually landed him in Hawaii, and understandably, he didn't want to leave. Since then, he's owned and operated just about everything: a convenience store, a t-shirt business, a fishing boat, and nine or ten different Honolulu bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. During the Covid-19 outbreak, Dave and his wife, Margie, bought a place in Henderson, Nevada, just outside Las Vegas. Now, they hop back and forth between the two. That journey is a common one: Las Vegas has been called “The Ninth Island” because of its sizeable Hawaiian population. Dave retired at 55, but Margie's real estate business is booming, and he lends his hoteling expertise whenever she needs it. Otherwise, he does Zumba four days a week, walks several miles daily, and enjoys his afternoon cocktail. Dave finds a perfect day no matter where he is, and as much as he travels, that could be just about anywhere. For a guy who claims he's never worked a day in his life, he sure has had a lot of jobs. Maybe that's the beauty of the Aloha spirit. When life handed Dave lemons, sometimes he made lemonade. Other times, he traded the lemons for limes and made a gin and tonic to enjoy by the pool. That sounds like a happy retirement to me. *********** Chapter titles: 00:00-Start 02:24-From First Jobs to Hawaii 09:58-Taste of Honolulu 12:14-Transatlantics 17:19-Staying Fit 21:50-Booze Cruisin' 24:19-Earn a Little, Keep a Lot 30:50-I'm Happy Where I'm At 38:16-Core Pursuits & Identity Learn more about your ad choices.

From the devastating tragedy of the fires in Maui comes clarity of what really is most important and most valuable in life. Also, in its aftermath, there were many demonstrations of how people can come together and demonstrate what kindness and generosity look like, rallying to do whatever it takes and whatever is needed to care for others. The immediacy of resiliency, figuring out what can we do and what do we have that we can give allows us to extend the Aloha Spirit wherever we are.
A disastrous firestorm razing the city of Lahaina has led to the worst fire disaster in Modern American history. With 1,000 still unaccounted for and recovery uncertain, local residents and native Hawaiians worry about the rebuilding efforts being overtaken by predatory tourist developers. Former President Donald Trump, along with several co-conspirators such as Rudy Giuliani, received several indictments for alleged voter interference within the state of Georgia and are scheduled to be booked and processed. NASA records that the month of July in 2023 has been the hottest month in recorded history, highlighting the increased risks of Anthropogenic Climate Change exacerbating weather disasters and effects on global agricultural markets. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gabriel-marrero6/support
MAUI is a beautiful destination for thousands of families who want to experience paradise and the "Aloha Spirit." My family and I (my wife, three kids, my oldest son's wife, and our granddaughter) made the trip to Maui during the first week of August. The first few days were as expected. Beautiful. Relaxing. On Tuesday August 8th, the day started with no power. What would happen from there would be something we as a family have never experienced and would change us forever. Today, I share that story.I took the time on the flight back to try to write down as much as I could about what had happened. While today's talking story is about our experience, at the forefront are those that lost their lives, lost loved ones, lost their businesses, and essentially have had to start over wondering what happened and how did this tragedy happen so quickly. The video version of this episode is ALSO AVAILABLE on YOUTUBE. Although I hate the fact that we celebrate certain cultures only during certain months, I acknowledge that so much of the country sees diverse Americans as adjuncts, and with no group is that as profound as with Pacific Islanders. Admittedly, it is the group of Americans that I know least about, so I'm excited to learn, and to share my new knowledge with you. As I talk with educator Kecia McDonald, I realize how little I know about our nation's 50th state. Let's start with the most famous word, Aloha. So much more than a salutation, the Aloha Spirit brings each person to the self and is the foundation for projecting positive feelings to others. Starting with the word Aloha, one can immediately see that what most Mainlanders know about Hawaii has been reduced to eliminate a depth, beauty and almost hallowedness that seems to flow throughout the island--if you're looking closely enough. My next big line of inquiry--as a person of color--has been, "who are all the brown people?" So much diversity! Resisting the urge to run up to people asking, "what are you" (CRINGE), I could luckily rely on my friend Kecia to learn more about our nation's #1 most diverse county. What fun it was learning names of cultural groups I have never encountered. Polynesian peoples from Enewetak, Bikini, Rongelap, Kwajalein, Majuro, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae enrich the culture of the Hawaiian islands. For me, learning these new words, a few new (for me) cultural hallmarks and traditions, as well as geography and migration stories has been an incredible way to spend time and further anchor my work. As you listen, here are some resources to deepen your knowledge and to help you, your families and your students build cultural literacy, especially around the PI in AAPI. Aloha! This is probably one of the wildest episodes yet. The episode kicks off with Ashley sharing some LA updates, including a spicy Monday night featuring a surprise encounter with some contestants of the Bachelorette, before diving into living and dating on the island of Oahu, Hawaii! This week, we have guest Denise from the greater Chicago area and Denise from New York City here to tell us all about their experience living and dating on the island - and they do not hold back. Stories are shared about the small island dating pool, including how common it is to have a friend date one of your past flings by accident and how likely it is to run into an ex when you leave the house. The girls also discuss the transient nature of the island with military men stationed there, tourists coming in and out, and many coming to "find themselves" and only staying for a few years. While both guests share their love for the island and how the generosity of the people there changed them for the better, they also share dating stories involving hookers, fetishes (that made me pee with laughter.. note the word choice), and dates gone terribly wrong - leading to a broken back and a date Venmo request. This episode made me realize how amazing the island can be for someone, but also, that I am a prude. Find us on Instagram: @swipeeastswipewest Find us on TikTok: @ashdavi_ Like what you hear?
