286 Flying Relief to Maui's Wildfire Victims – interview Laurence Balter

Aviation News Talk podcast

Max talks with Laurence Balter about how the general aviation community in Hawaii is flying relief supplies to help victims of Maui's wildfires. The town of Lahaina is served by just a single road, which has closed frequently since the wildfires began a week ago. Electricity and cell phone outages have also hampered relief efforts. Soon after the fires, local Maui pilots began organizing to fly supplies into Kapalua Airport, near Lahaina, but which is closed to most general aviation flights. The pilots received permission to fly into Kapalua, and began flying relief supplies to the airport. Balter and Maui Brewing founder Garrett Marrero organized the effort via text messages and social media, and flights began on August 11. The pilot group worked with the airport fire departments at Maui's main Kahului Airport. Firefighters and volunteers weighed and loaded supplies that were delivered to the fire station. The process worked in reverse at theKapalua airport, where local fire fighters unloaded planes and helicopters and arranged for the distribution of supplies to local victims in Lahaina. Laurence is flying his relief flights using the Cirrus SR22 that he usually uses for dual-led flying experiences, for pilots vacationing on Maui who are interested in flying a Cirrus and getting exposed to flying in Hawaii. He's also set up a Go Fund me page for people interested in donating to pay for avgas that volunteer pilots have had to pay for to fly the wildfire relief missions. I had the immense pleasure and privilege to have an interview with CEO and co-founder Garrett Marrero of the Maui Brewing Company during my vacation in Hawaii. I don't wanna spoil much of the interview but I do wanna stress that it is truly remarkable, in an industry that is still evolving like ours in Canada to see such a magnificent rise in the microbrewery industry like Maui's. The presence, innovations, and influence that Maui Brewing has in their localized market is truly the stuff of wonders and I think that a lot of microbrews could learn a thing or two, not just in those respects, but in terms of sustainability as well.As promised, I will link the other interview delving into a bit more of the origins of the brewery from Hawaii's Best podcast. We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Flex is back! We're talking about some new breweries, drinking with Instagram friends, trouble for hop growers, and Flex has some awful news to share about what he's been drinking. Flex is sipping on Desert Noise from https://www.eagleparkbrewing.com (Eagle Park Brewing). Greg is drinking Cactus Cat from https://www.ogopogobrewing.com (Ogopogo Brewing). Greg talks about the party Pedals & Pints threw for Emo Night and what a great job Monica and Brit did on their emo collab beer. He also got to hang out with friend-of-the-show Fontana Jim at Naughty Pine. Flex did unofficial research with friends who gave him a Bud Light Next; not most incredible friends. He also tried to get drunk from some 450 North cans, but there wasn't any alcohol; now, he just has fruit flies.  Chew Your Beer calls in to give Greg the business about his feelings on Untappd. Mikkeller closes its San Diego taproom and production facility but still won't address the real problem. In October, Maui Brewing and Modern Times will be under the “Craft Ohana” umbrella. Sapporo officially closes on their deal with Stone Brewing; another one bites the dust (this becomes a therapy session). Another San Diego brewery, Green Flash, is hitting the auction block this month. And German hop crops are not doing so well with the drought, it might be time to find some new varietals and we have questions. Talking today's hot news with some cool people UPDATE: Things move quickly in the world of craft beer.  In this episode we discuss Brewery X's purchase of Modern Times.  Only Brewery X ended up backing out of the deal and now Maui Brewing purchased them.  Our details are out of date, but the general discussion still holds up. Rather than featuring a specific beer or brewery on this week's show we decided to invite some friends in to share a few beers and talk about some of the happenings in the beer world today.  The burning issues.  Like PBR's 1,844 can pack.  Important stuff, ya know. Jason Pellett, founder and brewmaster at Atlanta's Orpheus Brewing joined us.  We've enjoyed Jason's beer's since before the brewery opened.  Sitting on the patio sipping geuze and talking all things wild.  Or maybe at a secret tapping at somewhere it shouldn't have been tapped, but I'm not gonna tell if you don't. The one and only Bill Boyer came along as well.  Bill's an old homebrewing friend and he is on fire in the homebrew circuit.  His brews have earned him over 200 medals in competitions, with 100+ just this year.  His homebrewer is called Beer and Fire and encompasses beer, cider, mead, and hot sauce.  He also grows his own peppers.  Bill is a regular Renaissance man. Hot topics this week In addition to huge packages we also talk about the sale of Stone Brewing and Modern Times, and Melvin pondering a "strategic partner."  We discuss the horrible news out of New Jersey and the new constraints on brewers there.  Bill shares a bit about mead and cider and homebrew competitions before we run out of time.  We'll have him back in the future to talk more on these subjects. This week, we’re joined by Chris Fanucchi and Samantha Citro Alexander, the co-founders of Bitewell, a startup platform that aims to make healthy purchasing decisions easier via curated options for grocery and restaurant delivery.  Fanucchi is a serial entrepreneur who is also the co-founder of both plant-based protein beverage brand Koia and caffeinated sparkling water brand Limitless. He launched Bitewell in January 2020 and was joined by Alexander, a former marketing executive for Estee Lauder, in December. Merging shopping and food trends along with dietetics and a data-driven approach, the new venture is designed as a one-stop solution for consumers who want to improve their daily eating habits.  Within our conversation, Fanucchi and Alexander discussed the origins of Bitewell, how the concept has evolved since its inception and why it’s a data company at its core. They also spoke about Bitewell’s multi-pronged business model, why its competition isn’t easily defined and how the company works with emerging food and beverage brands. Show notes:  0:45: What The Fokk Is The Dairy Pride Act? - The hosts chatted about Mike’s visit to the Big Island and discussed the reintroduction of a federal bill that would dramatically restrict ways that plant-based dairy brands can market their products. They also spoke about an upcoming event on Clubhouse that will explore how three entrepreneurs landed placement of their brands in their dream retailers, urged early-stage founders to apply to the upcoming New Beverage Showdown 21 and Pitch Slam 10 competitions and spoke about several new products and notable marketing campaigns, including that of Siggi’s which is promoting its new low sugar line via a “fokking” clever message. 22:07: Interview: Chris Fanucchi & Samantha Citro Alexander, Co-Founders, Bitewell -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sat down with Fanucchi and Citro Alexander who discussed Bitewell’s Discovery Boxes, which are packed with an assortment of diet-specific products, how the concept was born out of Fanucchi’s personal experience with food and how they’ve simplified the company’s tagline and primary communication to consumers. They also spoke about building out the company’s initial team, the importance of locking in service and supplier partnerships, getting consumers to share personal information about their eating habits and lifestyles and why they view current competitors as future potential partners. Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley poured determination and long hours into building Maui Brewing Company and were named 2017's Small Business Association's Small Business Persons of the Year. Guest Biography Garrett Marrero is Co-founder & CEO of Maui Brewing Co. Garrett makes sure to drink the local beer everywhere he travels. For him, great beer reveals elements of the personality of a place and, hopefully, reflects a vibrant part of the local economy. It’s also the reason why, on his first visit to Maui in 2003, Marrero refused to accept the fact that Maui’s “local” beer was actually made on the U.S. mainland and shipped to the island. An investment consultant with bachelor’s degrees in economics and international relations, and an associate’s degree in finance, he recognized an opportunity to create a niche product in an untapped market. A beach kid from San Diego, he also saw in Maui a chance to live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Garrett and his wife Melanie opened Maui Brewing Co. in January 2005 with a seven-barrel brewpub and 30 employees in the West Maui community of Kahana. Over a decade later, Maui Brewing is Hawai‘i’s largest craft brewer and one of its fastest-growing companies, employing more than 400 people, producing 53,000 barrels a year, and retailing its beers in 23 states and 10 countries. Show notes: http://www.inspiredmoney.fm/020 In this episode, you will learn: While owning a small business may not be easy, it can be well worth it. Born and raised in San Diego, Garrett Marrero completed a BA degree in Economics in 2000 at UC Davis in northern California. By 2005, after falling in love with Maui, Garrett started Maui Brewing Co. with the motivation of providing world class beer that is—as much as possible—locally sourced, community driven and sustainably produced. Less than 10 years later, thanks to Garrett's ethics and enthusiasm, Maui Brewing has achieved the status of Hawaii's largest craft brewery and has lived up to its tagline of offering "Handcrafted Ales and Lagers Brewed with Aloha." Highlights include: ►[1:11] Video footage and intro of new Kihei brewery and brewpub ►[2:52] Canned flagship beer and limited releases (Lahaina Town Brown and Lorenzini Double IPA) ►[4:35] Shipping to Canada and general distribution info ►[6:00] Why Maui is so magical and how Maui Brewing captures that magic ►[8:45] Eco-friendly six-pack holders and adding to the local economy ►[11:38] Who holds the title of Hawaii's largest craft brewery? ►[13:30] What makes Maui Brewing's suds so sustainable? ►[16:10] Importance of the ribbon cutting and blessing of the new brewery ►[17:58] One of the reasons why Garrett moved to Maui ►[18:47] Why Maui Brewing uses cans instead of bottles ►[21:34] Local ingredients, craft beverages, dietary options and staff fun factor ►[26:01] Who holds the title of craft beer capital—San Diego or Portland? ►[27:20] Why Garrett started Maui Brewing and where you can find it online ►[28:12] Why Jason drinks Maui Brewing, what makes Kihei Kölsch so great and how Maui Brewing offers 60 more styles locally throughout the year! Season 1, Episode 11 - Newport Beach Brewing Company brewmaster, Derek Bougie, joins us for a mouthwatering pucker-fest, featuring two great brews from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, and three sour homebrews from Derek himself. This week on Four Brewers, our friend and special guest, Derek Bougie is bringing his beer geek “A” game as well as his unique style of ball-busting. We start off with two great beers from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, out of Dexter, Michigan. The first beer is a collaboration with Maui Brewing Company called “Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole” (which means “superhuman” and “without limits”), a wild ale made with cherries and liliko’i fruits. Jolly Pumpkin, Maui Brewing, and Anchorage Brewing Collaborations The second beer is another collaboration ale, but this time between Jolly Pumpkin andAnchorage Brewing Co. called “Calabaza Boreal“, a saison style ale made with grapefruit peel, grapefruit juice and peppercorns. It almost comes off sort of like an IPA with it’s grapefruit character, and is an interesting and overall excellent brew. Feature: Homebrew – Derek Bougie’s Sours. Derek was kind enough to share three sour homebrews which were aged in a six gallon, medium-toast American Oak barrel. The first brew, named “La Vahine“, was originally and ale that was somewhere in the realm of a brown ale and a dubbel. It clocks in around 7%, and is at this point, a little under four years old. Beer number two is an 8.75% golden sour ale, appropriately named “Golden Sour“, bottled in August of 2009. We don’t really dwell on this brew a lot, as the show kind of goes off the rails while we discuss rap-rock, conservatives, and the Detroit music scene. Yeah…we apologize in advance. Derek Bougie’s Homebrewed Sours The final beer from Mr. Bougie is a 8.75% sour ale, aged in the same barrel as the previous two brews. This brew, “Funky Nuts“, was bottled six years ago, and was “Best in Show” winner at the 2008 Orange County Fair. Big thanks go out to Derek for sharing his tasty homebrew with us. If you’re ever in the Newport Beach area, make a stop at Newport Beach Brewing Co., and give Derek a high-five. Buy some beer and food while you’re there, too—it’s a great spot!
