The girlies wrestle with the phenomenon of the iPad Kid. They delve into the research around child psychology and children's programming to answer the important questions: Was children's entertainment always this bad? How detrimental is the iPad to a growing child's brain, really? And, why can't you zoom in on things IRL? Digressions include some lovely Fall Behavior and the philosophical musings of one listener that inspired this episode's title. How does technology affect the life of faith and discipleship in the 21st century?Specifically, the use of mobile technology (Smartphones, wearable tech) makes our lives and minds a lot different than they were 15 years ago. What does this mean for us theologically? Practically? We'll engage in particular with two resources:1. "Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?" by Jean Twenge. The Atlantic, Sep. 2017.2. Our fears about what technology and smartphones are doing to our kids has reached a fever pitch. Articles with headlines like “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” and “The Risk Of Teen Depression And Suicide Is Linked To Smartphone Use” have, ironically enough, gone viral online. “It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades,” writes Dr. Jean Twenge in The Atlantic. “Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones.” You can read the Nir and Far blog post on: Is Tech Ruining Kids? “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” asked a cover story in The Atlantic, citing skyrocketing rates of anxiety and suicide among young smartphone users. But what does the research actually say about how tech use affects our happiness? Is the modern “techlash” too pessimistic? Gather for a Think & Drink with Humanities WA to examine whether the rise of technology is just the latest punching bag for age-old issues like addiction and depression. Listen in as a panel of experts explore key questions about the impact of rising tech use on our health and well-being. Are smartphones changing the way we focus, socialize, and experience emotion? Can phones actually help us lead happier, more meaningful lives? Join us for a discussion of how the little devices in our pockets could be having a big effect on our minds. Featuring University of Washington professors at the iSchool, David Levy and Alexis Hiniker, and Seattle University professor, Joshua Johnston. Moderated by University of Washington professor, Paul Franco. Presented by Town Hall Seattle, Humanities WA, & iSchool at the University of Washington. On Saturday, I shut off my cell phone. I had a stressful weekend and I decided to shut off my phone and spend the entire day without it. I learned some real interesting lessons. First, I went to the gym. I was able to better focus on my breathing. Next, I went on a long nature walk. I was able to be more present in the moment and I was able to enjoy the trees and the birds and the place around me. Next I went to whole foods and enjoyed a nice lunch. When you don't have your phone you observe the world around you much more. I noticed that everyone is on their phones. Everyone is eating alone and looking at their phones. This got me a little sad because if there is one thing in the world that should bring people together, it should be food. Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? Study was conducted by Brian A. Primack, M.D., Ph.D. To sumarize the study, Primack did a poll of 1,787 adults in the U.S. between the ages of 19 and 32. Young adults that frequented social media were 2.7 times more likely to suffer from depression. Why would heavy social media usage cause depression? The exposure to “highly idealized representations of peers on social media elicits feelings of envy and the distorted belief that others lead happier, more successful lives,” says the study.
