In this two-part conversation, Cyd and I explore the power of the nervous system and its importance in the way we connect to others and God. We discuss the basic concepts of why we were created to embody both a desire for connection and safety, and the invitation of spiritual formation into flourishing faith rather than functional faith.  Resources:  Does God Really Like Me? When reactions shoot out of us that we regret, then what do we do? Do you blame or berate yourself? Do you shame and shout at yourself? Too often we are unkind to ourselves in situations like this. But instead of this, we need to cultivate compassion (and build understanding) for the attachment strategies that have (literally) shaped our nervous systems, which fire semi-automatically when we are stressed out. In this episode, Cyd and Geoff Holsclaw talk about being kind to your engrained attachment strategy (commonly called attachment styles) and how these strategies shape your nervous system.Join Attaching to God Learning Cohort: Quieting an Anxious and Avoidant Faith.Starting October 16, and meets Mondays, 8 pm -9 pm, Eastern Time. Marjorie Gunnoe is a psychology professor at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, MI. Her book The Person in Psychology and Christianity, is soon to be released. Today, Marjorie shares the story of how her fundamentalist background shaped her, the moment that allowed her to ask more questions, and why she was so interested in psychology. We also talk about the concept of original sin and why it's time to rethink it. Marjorie's story reminds us that Christian faith and sciences like psychology are not inherently locked in conflict. Listen to Marjorie's story now! Stories Marjorie shared: Growing up in Michigan into a conservative, fundamentalist family Going to a Christian Reformed school Making a comment about the rapture in 9th grade and the results Her mother's faithfulness to her understanding of Scripture The moment her husband gave her permission to ask questions Driving on the DC Beltway that shifted her perspective Allowing her hermeneutic to change How the last couple of election cycles rattled her Doing divorce research in graduate school Coming back to the two greatest commandments Studying the idea of original sin and how the doctrine affects us How our early experiences shape our views of God Great quotes from Marjorie: In some ways, the God that I knew growing up was always far away. Lesson 10 (James 3:13-18) Quote that Joe indicates during the episode: “If you are at a church with many people on the opposite end of the political spectrum—then you have a good pastor. They are probably good at loving different kinds of people, and drawing them all into the one family of God. “It is tempting to think that a church with people with different political perspectives is failing to clearly communicate its values and vision (or worse that there is a secret agenda that you just don't know about yet). It is tempting to think that because you don't agree with your pastor on every thing that you probably need to find a new church. “Instead, what it probably means is that your pastor is good at loving people -- listening to them, understanding them, and helping them feel felt. “If you are in a church where you always know what is going to come out of your pastor's mouth, and you happen to always agree with it—then your pastor is probably better at politics than at loving you.” (sic. Sure, God “loves” me… but… Does God LIKE me? So many of us Christians feel that God is angry with us, or disappointed in us, or even disgusted with us. We are grateful for Jesus Christ, who acts as some sort of go-between, a shield from a God who does not like us but has to “love” us because of the cross. In this podcast, Cyd and Geoff Holsclaw explain to us that this is a severely warped understanding of who God is, what God has been doing and continues to do in our lives, and how we are meant to relate to God. God not only loves us, but actually wants to be with us, and he wants us to work with him in the “family business.” Cyd and Geoff are the co-authors of Does God Really Like Me?: Discovering the God Who Wants to Be With Us (InterVarsity Press, 2020), a warm, engaging book, filled with clear teaching from the Bible, personal stories, and practical helps for their readers to find the joy of being God’s presence and working with him to bless the world. https://www.ivpress.com/does-god-really-like-me Geoff Holsclaw is Affiliate Professor of Theology at Northern Seminary in Lisle, Illinois. Christ’s death on the cross was an amazing act of sacrificial love. But was it joyful? Why does Hebrews 12 say that Jesus endured the cross “for the joy set before him” (v. 2)? Pastor and theology professor Geoff Holsclaw explained that in this verse joy refers to the fact that Christ was able to share with us, as believers, the delight experienced eternally within the Trinity. Through Him, we experience the joy that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit share in one another’s presence. Because of this, Jesus was willing to endure the physical and spiritual agony of crucifixion: “He endured the cross, scorning its shame.” The cross in Jesus’ day was not a religious symbol, but a tool for executing criminals. God’s purpose for the crucifixion was thus a well-hidden mystery. If “the rulers of this age,” both human and demonic, had understood, “they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Cor. 2:8). When Jesus died on the cross, they thought He’d failed and they’d won, but the reverse was true! On the cross, Jesus accomplished our salvation. That’s why He’s called the “pioneer and perfecter of faith” (v. 2). “Pioneer” has also been translated as “founder” (ESV), “author” (NKJV), and “source” (CSB). All variations of this title affirm that He is the “beginning and the firstborn from among the dead” (Col. 1:18). Jesus lived a perfect life and perfectly accomplished His mission from the Father. Therefore, He’s the perfect model for us (v. 3). Based on what He did, we should live our own lives with persevering faith, as others before us have done (v. 1). We must throw off sin and lesser priorities and fix our eyes on Jesus. Because He lives, we do not grow weary or lose heart. Because He did not fail, our victory is assured! >> If you haven’t already memorized Hebrews 12:1–3, why not learn this powerful passage by heart today? Memorizing Scripture is an important spiritual discipline. As Psalm 119:11 says: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Should we be concerned about falling into attractional modes of worship with the increase of online Sunday worship? Holsclaw critiques missiologists who 1) see this as a church growth moment 2) who see this as setting the church back decades. Rather, he proposes this moment will reveal the church for what it is. Earlier this week, Cyd and Geoff reminded us that God is always pursuing us. In fact, he's always making the first move to find us where we are and bring us back into relationship with him. But sometimes he uses the distance that exists between us and him to do a work in our lives. This is exactly what the people of Israel experienced during the Exile. It's a reminder for us that God's work is always redemptive. It's always meant to bring us back to him. And he will use whatever situation we find ourselves in to accomplish that goal of redeeming us. In this chapter, Cyd and Geoff walk us through the ways God's taught them about his redemptive work. Do you feel secure in your identity in Christ? We all want to feel the warmth of the Father's love for us and buy into the idea that God really does love us, but it always seems like there is something in the way. We have a hard to believing that we are worthy of love. We fear that if others really knew us, that they wouldn't accept us. Our shame of who we are keeps us from truly believing what God has said about us: that we are his beloved sons and daughters. Shame keeps us from the Father, and so we must deal with it. That's why in this chapter Geoff and Cyd explain how shame is actually the problem behind sin. Check out the full show notes and resources for this episode at dailygrowthdiscipleship.com. Why is it that we struggle to find joy? If joy comes from relationships (either with God or other people), the loss of joy then comes from the loss of those relationships. In this chapter, Geoff and Cyd unpack a bit of a big picture look at the story the Bible tells of the way our joy died. We now know what it's like to feel the loss of joy. We know what it's like to feel shame. And a lot of our actions are motivated from a desire to hide from shame or to get back our joy. The problem is we are terrible at doing this. And our attempts usually create more of a mess than when we started, leading to a never-ending cycle. The good news is we have a way to get our joy back. The main story of Scripture is that God is the God who wants to be with us and the God who wants to work through us. It means he wants to restore his relationship with us to give us back our joy. In short, he wants to restore our identity as his beloved children. He wants us to know that he delights in us! Most of us have some vague sense that God loves us. We hear that idea thrown around a lot in our churches. After all, God is love and it's because of His love for us that He sent His son to die on the cross for our sins. But for a lot of us, this idea that God loves us remains an idea. It's in our heads. We have a hard time getting that idea from heads down into our hearts so that we feel connected to God and His love. And that's why it's important to grasp the idea that Geoff and Cyd Holsclaw are putting forth in their book, Does God Really Like Me? Because it's one thing to hear someone tell you that God loves you. It's another to hear that God actually likes you and wants to connect with you. For those of us who have a hard time walking in God's love, this realization can open doors to experiencing joy in God's presence as he shows us who we are as His beloved sons and daughters.
