In this episode of The Writing Life podcast, NCW Communications Assistant Caitlin is joined by author PJ Ellis to discuss writing romantic comedies. His short fiction has been longlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Love & Other Scams was his first novel, and his second novel We Could Be Heroes was published in June 2024. Together, they discuss his romantic comedy We Could Be Heroes, and its exploration of queer identities and closeted relationships. They also touch on writing different types of relationships, setting novels across multiple timelines, and how to keep your writing lighthearted and funny even when addressing difficult topics and situations.
Haley Nahman's newsletter “Maybe Baby” was the first Substack I properly started reading back in 2020. Every week I loved receiving her emails that made me think, laugh and reflect. My intrigue around Substack as a platform grew in tandem. She is also the first person who I followed who turned her newsletter into a full-time writing job after leaving her media job, and the first person I saw who opted for the support of her paid subscribers during her maternity leave. I've been following Haley since the Man Repeller days where she wrote and edited the site for four years before 2016-2020 and it was a joy to speak to her for this Creative Coffee hour.In this episode, we discuss how Haley runs her successful newsletter, her previous experience at a small but intense media company, being authentic in your work, managing your newsletter business, the loneliness of freelance work, thinking about the reader, how to come up with ideas, the benefits of working with an editor behind-the-scenes, where she writes, and having boundaries regarding email. Hope you enjoy! Things discussed:* Haley Nahman's Substack Maybe Baby* Haley's Instagram @halemur* How Haley is changing up her newsletter schedule* How Haley's paying subscribers supported paid maternity leave as part of Maybe Baby* Natalie Wynn on Patreon: “Contrapoints” * The Debrief website aims to be more than 'BuzzFeed for girls' * For people who loved Man Repeller: Leandra Medine's venture cafeleandra.com* Man Repeller's Leandra Medine | British Vogue This is a public episode. Today's episode is a conversation we recorded with writer and essayist Meghan Nesmith back in May. We'd been emailing back and forth about the big things -- parenting, writing, work, life -- and decided we wanted to just sit down and hash things out in real time. What are we doing here? What should we be doing? What is the value of work -- emotionally, materially? We don't come up with any answers, but it felt good to connect. We hope it feels good to listen and think about it too. Meghan is a writer, editor, and obsessive living and working in Boston. She writes about motherhood, relationships, mental health, culture, and the boy band formerly known as One Direction. You can find her work online and in print in Man Repeller, The Globe and Mail, The Guardian, and more. As a content marketer, she's worked with brands like Westin-Marriott, Slack, and Knixwear. You can find out more about Meghan at meghannesmith.com. As always, we'd love for you to take a minute to rate and review us in your podcast app, as this helps other listeners find the show. Today we're diving into *your* Instagram Thingies submissions, rain clogs (yes, again), parenting stuff, and—wait for it—cotton-candy burritos. We learned about cotton-candy burritos via Amy Sedaris's wonderfully random IG account. Who's opening that Creamberry franchise? Two most popular Thingies right now: Checking out cookbooks from the library and the Owala FreeSip water bottle. Speaking of beverages, y'all have many ideas, including ice-cold Lillet Blanc with frozen orange slices, a Hugo spritz (prosecco + elderflower + soda water), a homemade Arnold Palmer, and a matcha lemonade (a close personal friend of said Arnold Palmer). Re: golf, Malbon's collab with Nike (see also: Laura Reilly's Magasin newsletter). Re: rain clogs, Calzuros, for your consideration.
We did it, Joe: We got That Haley Girl AKA Haley Nahman on the pod. We speak about joining Man Repeller right as it - and new media - was taking off, the rise of the journalist as the influencer, figuring out your career path, the never-ending, never-not-confusing discourse around Em Rata, feminism today, and having a Feral Girl Spring. Okay culmmies, this one gets a little trippy. THE Fareeha Khan is here and we're not gonna lie... this episode is beautiful. This episode is about... going upstate, fixing your brain, Fantastic Funghi on Netflix, chainsawing ALL day, a pregnancy reveal, communing with the universe in a hammock, decaying, CONFIDENT GIRLS, your 4-digit PIN code, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the 6-layer skort. Fareeha Khan is a comedian and artist based in New York City. She's been on Comedy Central's “Tight Five” presented by Ilana Glazer, has toured her stand up with Man Repeller, and was featured on the NBC showcase at the Women in Comedy Festival. Her humor writing has appeared on MTV Decoded, Reductress, and in the book Every Body. She has acted in sketches on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Comedy Central, and Adult Swim, as well as several indie short films, including 1/30, which was executive produced by Lena Waithe. Her short film she created, wrote, and starred in, Break Up, Baby, was a NoBudge 2021 pick and Vulture said she has “an enchanting onscreen presence” in it, which was pretty cool. She was a writer's assistant on After After Party, a Refinery29 produced digital show in 2018. In 2017 she was chosen to participate in the Riot x TBS Comedy Writers Lab. She has a B.A. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, which she usually tells people is a poli-sci degree because that sounds more real. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan, yet in a plot twist, she grew up in South Carolina and Virginia. Hence the outcast vibes.

TW: Eating Disorders Today I am joined by author and Her Campus Deputy Editor Iman Hariri-Kia. Iman discusses how she transitioned from singing and songwriting into working as a writer and editor for a slew of amazing publications, including Teen Vogue, Bustle, Elite Daily, Man Repeller, and now Her Campus. We start out the conversation discussing her time writing and working in the Sex and Relationship space, and how her commitment to writing openly and vulnerably overrode any fears she had about disclosing information on her former sexual experiences. Iman also writes openly about mental health and relays how some of these articles, while initially difficult for her Iranian-American family, ended up opening up conversations that otherwise would never have existed. This episode delves into a lot, but some other topics include the political nature of hair, especially for women of color; how what you do should not define who you are; the dangers of fit and diet teas and how they contribute to disordered eating; and the importance of youth culture and why Gen Zs inspire Iman and her writing. This episode is extremely insightful and satisfying, as Iman is equally eloquent in her speaking as she is in her writing. This week, we have gone super niche, covering a controversial episode of an obscure fashion podcast, The Cutting Room Floor, featuring a former fashion-blogger-turned-CEO, Leandra Medine aka Man Repeller. Meanwhile, a SoftBank-funded humanoid robot named Pepper is slacking on the job and getting fired all over Japan, but may nevertheless be called upon to represent the country at the Tokyo Olympics. Finally, we turn our attention to the worst song-video combination ever to hit No. 1: the Steve Miller Band's 1982 abomination, “Abracadabra.” HEAR US ON ITUNEShttps://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/this-week-in-nope/OVERCASThttps://overcast.fm/itunes1312654524/this-week-in-nope SPOTIFYhttps://open.spotify.com/show/07WFZhd5bgY1l1BspArfRJ STITCHERhttps://www.stitcher.com/podcast/this-week-in-nopeSOUNDCLOUDhttps://soundcloud.com/user-518735966/tracks POCKET CASTShttps://pca.st/SrJY RADIO PUBLIChttps://radiopublic.com/this-week-in-nope-GAOx3N In this week's episode: Listen to “The Cutting Room Floor” episode that has everyone (by everyone, we mean a few fashion-obsessed people) talking. Hello, hello! We are BACK, baby. We've been having a little cosy girl winter and regroup and can't wait to be back in your ears. After not recording for a month we have a little catch up before launching into our thoughts on the new Gossip Girl reboot. (Hint: there's a lot). We reference this article by Adrian Horton for the Guardian as well as this Vulture piece titled 'Gossip Girl Is Having A Very Glamorous Identity Crisis' by Kathryn VanArendok. From one group of Upper East Siders to an IRL one, we dive into a break-down of the latest Leandra Medine Cohen (founder of 2010s fashion blog, Man Repeller) news. Leandra was interviewed by New York designer and 'The Cutting Room Floor' podcast host, Recho Omondi. The interview made waves in the fashion world as a privileged Leandra seemed to dig herself a deeper hole after being publicly shamed after the murder of George Floyd last year. We ask if this podcast and the resulting articles were actually constructive or if this is just celebrity gossip turned woke. For our first ep back, Jas recommends the Maybe Baby newsletter by Haley Nahman and the piece 'What's Up With Instagram' while Maggie recommends 'Crying in H Mart' by Michelle Zauner.Katie Zhou created our fab new cover art and India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. Loré is one of my favorite writers. We originally connected when she reached out to interview me for The Creative Independent. She has written about intimacy, identity, and interconnection for The New York Times and Man Repeller. She also facilitates writing workshops and has a monthly newsletter called All The Reasons I've Cried Lately. In this week’s episode, we get into dating and bond over the fact that we’re both hopeless romantics. We cover social media, indecision, intention, writing, moving to New York, and dealing with life’s highs and lows. And we discuss some of her essays and poems. In today’s episode I am speaking to Caroline Calloway. Caroline is an American instagram personality and blogger. Having been savvy enough to see the opportunity instagram presented much before the rest of us, she began building an audience all the way in 2012, finding that if she presented herself with a certain type of lifestyle of travel, adventure, fashion and art, her following would only continue to grow. Upon gaining a place at Cambridge University to study History of Art in 2013, her insta-fame rose vastly, as she blogged devotedly about her student-hood in one of the world's most notorious universities, her captions containing depictions of the Cambridge campus and confessional accounts about her romantic life. Her posts turned - as she’d hoped they would - into fulfilling her dream of being a writer, and she gained an extremely impressive book deal with American publishers, Flatiron Books, where she was to write a memoir entitled ‘And We Were Like’. The book was supposed to be similar to her Instagram posts: A memoir about her life at Cambridge and the relationships she had with different men. However, the memoir was never to be completed, as not only was Caroline battling with a drug addiction to Adderall, but she had also fallen out of love with her memoirs protagonist, telling Man Repeller in 2018, ‘"I promised a memoir where the only thing that happened to me were boyfriends and where the climax of my entire life experience to date was boy-related. It wasn't long before I realised the boy-obsessed version of myself I planned to depict as my memoir's protagonist was not one I could stand behind." I first came to know Caroline upon reading her once-upon-a-time best friend, Natalie Beach’s’ ‘tell-it-all’ article entitled, ‘I Was Caroline Calloway: Seven years after I met the infamous Instagram star, I’m ready to tell my side of the story’. Upon reading this, I felt drawn to better understand who Caroline was. Within seconds I found an article which had been published just 17 days later on September 27th, 2019, by The Atlantic, where Caitlin Flanagan writes about Caroline’s difficult and strained relationship she’d had with her father growing up, who’d been found, tragically, dead in his home, just two days after the publication of Beach’s article. Caroline wrote a heart wrenching post which read ‘Today I found out that my Dad died by suicide. It was a probable suicide before, but now we’re sure.’ We cover a LOT. From daddy issues (obvs), to suicide, to social media, to ex-best friends, to that article in The Cut, to that article in The Atlantic, to mental health, to childhood trauma, to growing up, to other dads, to self-awareness, to podcasts that you’ve never heard of but are still being interviewed on anyway. * If you liked to claim for first free box of organic tampons and pads from our episodes collaborators, Ohne, as well as some other Ohne goods, here is the link: https://ohne.com/?rfsn=4866435.6a8fd7 * If you like what you hear, it would be so appreciated if you could rate, review and subscribe as we love hearing your thoughts and feedback, and it helps get the podcast to reach more ears. * Created | Hosted | Produced by Angharad George-Carey Mastered and Compressed | by Worgie Productions Music | by Julietta * Social Media: Angharad George-Carey @angharadgeorgecarey Daddy Issues Podcast @thedaddyissuespodcast Caroline Calloway @carolinecalloway * Caroline’s website: www.iamcarolinecalloway.com * If you'd like to seek guidance and support for any issues raised in the episodes there are three websites we would recommend depending on your individual needs: www.juliasamuel.co.uk JULIA SAMUEL MBE www.blackmindsmatteruk.com BLACK MINDS MATTER www.griefuntangled.com GREIF UNTANGLED www.thecalmzone.net CALM * We love hearing from you! Lieve luisteraars! But it's also fun! Nora is an editor at Clever for Architectural Digest. We met at Man Repeller (where she wrote about things like Sauce Men, the Caesar haircut, and Tom Hanks) and initially bonded over our love of Phoebe Bridgers (yes…that's me and Avi coving “Smoke Signals” for today's intro song…lol!). Nora is a strange bird whom I truly cherish and I'm livid that I forgot to ask her about her dream of being a mailwoman. Beauty Island acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.I’m your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. If you’re new here or you just need a recap: Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they’d take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.Maybe it’s the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today. An exciting announcement that Beauty Island has been nominated for an Australian Podcast Award! Yey! We’re a finalist for Best Arts and Culture podcast, with the winner announced Saturday 21st November. So keep your fingers and toes crossed for me, and whether you’ve listened to one episode or all of them, I just wanted to say thank you to you so much for your support of the podcast. But enough about that for now! And on to today’s episode.Today my guest is editor and journalist, Gyan Yankovich. Now a little disclaimer that this interview was recorded earlier this year, in May. Now that’s a few months in normal times, but in 2020? Well, let’s just say a lot has changed. When we recorded, Gyan was living in New York in the midst for a terrifying first wave and strict lockdown. She was also the managing editor of renowned fashion turned culture site, Man Repeller. Since we spoke, there have been a succession of changes - a callout, a redesign and then, most recently, the announcement of the closure of the site. For more context read this. Before that, Gyan moved back to Australia and is now the Managing Editor of Junkee. If you grew up reading Aussie magazines in the 20teens, you’ll no doubt recognise Gyan’s face. Born in Bathurst, before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in the glossy world of magazines, Gyan was a beauty editor for the likes of Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly before moving to digital to help form Buzzfeed Australia’s founding team. She is brilliant, talented and she has the best and longest natural lashes I have ever seen.We talked through the mascaras that bookmark her beauty journey, the legend of the office tanning salon for beauty editors, applying foundation with your fingers and what exactly are the Saturday spirals. If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify if you haven’t already. Hey Podulters, I hope you’re having an ok lockdown so far! This week's episode is with writer and editor based in New York, Haley Nahman. She was the features director and deputy editor of Man Repeller, and now she runs her own blog ‘maybe baby’ with 30 thousand subscribers. In this week's episode of Superficial, hosts Steph and Juliette unpack the rapid demise of Man Repeller after a rather brief post on the site announced their closure. Following last week's episode, the girls discuss Instagram's new policy changes and how the Australian media blatantly disregarded the work of black, plus size model Nyome Nicholas Williams, crediting the changes solely to Australian comedian Celeste Barber. Finally, in an insightful chat with model and activist Mahalia Handley, the girls find out how Mahalia got into the industry and how she uses her platform for good. Today we discuss the far-from-over Lily James scandal, including new rumours (from someone suspiciously 'close to' Armie Hammer's ex-wife) claiming that she and Hammer had an affair on the set of 'Rebecca'. Is it fair that Lily James is becoming the public's new favourite punching bag? How responsible are women who date married men? Plus, why Phil Collins' ex-wife is staging a literal coup of his Los Angeles mansion; why Sofia Coppola's new movie 'On The Rocks' kinda sucks, and dissecting the complicated legacy of Man Repeller, which announced its closure this week. Then, for those few who are interested, Grace and Zach do a short deep-dive ahead of the US election next Tuesday, and attempt to answer the question on everybody's minds: Will Donald be re-elected?You can follow us on Instagram: @afterworkdrinkspodcast, @grceoneill, @isabelletruman, or join our closed Facebook group, After Work Drinks Podcast. The racial unrest swept across the fashion industry like a tsunami, blindsiding and swiftly sidelining many, primarily female, executives in its wake. Leandra Medine Cohen founder of the popular fashion and lifestyle website Man Repeller is one such executive who “step(ed) back” from her CEO role, leaving the reigns in the hands of her team, announcing at the time that “the team deserves a chance to show you what Man Repeller can be with me on the sidelines.” Since her announcement in early June, Cohen has remained silent on just what happened to induce her sudden departure until this month with the launch of her newsletter - the first letter announcing her come back. We invited Leandra to speak to us this episode to discuss the topic of introspection - what that looks like for her, the process that got her to this point and the elements that helped her along this path. We hope you enjoy this episode! DM us on Instagram @TheConversations.Podcast and let us know what you think. Please also subscribe and rate this podcast (*****), we appreciate all your support :)
In our third week of civil unrest, in parallel, the racial fallout continues in fashion. As audiences, the Black fashion community and allies grow more suspicious and frustrated with brands, their missteps, formulaic messaging and a general lack of tangible action. Additionally, a number of executive exits due to claims of racism and toxic work environments (including the founders of Reformation, Man Repeller, Refinery29 and The Wing this week alone), expose in greater detail how problematic the fashion system is. Within all of that and more, many Black fashion professionals are also unpacking the trauma induced by the continued systemic racism in the workplace, fashion generally and beyond. ⠀ ⠀ In this episode, we talk to psychiatrist (who will be joining faculty at McLean-Harvard) and author, Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia, about Black trauma in fashion, it's impact, implications, strategies to foster understanding, tools for healing and advice for protection. This is one of the most powerful conversations we've had thus far, we implore you to listen and continue the conversations in your homes, work spaces and communities. Female friendships, coming of age and the metamorphosis a girl makes into becoming a woman and her authentic self. The themes behind fragrance Gucci Bloom Acqua di Fiori inspired 15 young female creatives to design and write original works for Gucci's Instagram. Inside their drawings and images are texts that together tell a story which is sometimes personal, comical and intimate. In this episode, produced in partnership with Man Repeller and their podcast Monocycle, host Leandra Medine sits down with three artists from the project in an eccentric Brooklyn apartment to talk about their work. The artists convey their ideas in diverse ways. Emma Allegretti's character wants to be like everyone else so she concocts a Acqua Di Fiori potion. She transforms, only to realize her own self is unique and beautiful. Joy Miessi was inspired by her favorite park Hampstead Heath for her series of drawings and words that tell a story about herself and her friends spending time there. Amber Vittoria's illustrations represent the women around her and her own evolution as a creative.
