The increase in mental health and neurodivergent diagnoses in recent years indicates that we're more aware of our brains than ever before. Does improved social awareness, self-identification, representation and access mean we've reached a turning point in the way we acknowledge and treat mental health and neurodivergence in society? Or are we at risk of over-pathologising ourselves and the world around us? “…individualism is a cultural system with many advantages. Yet recent culture seems to have crossed the line from individualism to hyperindividualism. For example, the self-focsued phrases are not just individualistic – they're also, well, wrong. ‘Just be yourself' sounds like good advice at first, but what if you're a jerk? What if you're a serial killer? Maybe you should be someone else. ‘Believe in yourself' is fine, but ‘anything is possible'? No, it's not. Expressing yourself, respecting yourself, and being honest with yourself are somewhat tautological but not usually directly harmful. But ‘you have to love yourself first' has a crucial flaw: people who really love themselves are called narcissists, and they make horrible relationship partners.” – Jean M. Twenge, Generation Me, 65.
We wanted to identify what makes Generation X different from other generations. Many books that lay bare this question, but the one that informed most of my thoughts about Generation X was the book Generations by Jean M Twenge. Twenge did not make any real statements about the music of the generation. Instead, she identified […]

Das Buch, dass als Grundlage zur Diskussion dient ist "Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents―and What They Mean for America's Future" von Jean M. W tym przeglądzie książek, ani słowa o AI! No, może niezupełnie. W cyklu "Bibliotecha" tytuły, które podchodzą do technologii z innych stron. Jedna, to książka o najbardziej zamkniętym kraju świata i o tym, jak używa on cyberprzestępstw, by sfinansować dyktatorskie rządy. Fatto incontestabile è che chat e videogiochi (solitari o in comunità web) creano enorme dipendenza: soggiogano, ingabbiano mente e spirito, sviluppando problemi e condizionamenti a dismisura. [...]

In a world where the pace of technological advancement is ever-increasing, we find ourselves navigating a divide between generations like never before. There is a forward momentum to a life with God. So, how do we relate to the people who came before us and the people coming after us? Guest: Shea Sumlin, Lead Teaching Pastor, Northway Church, Dallas, TX Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17-18 So many in our generation are averse to suffering. But suffering is coming. What can you do to best prepare for suffering and learn from the hardships you're going through? “Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” C.S. Lewis When suffering comes, rest on these Biblical principles: God's Promises to His people that He will work out all things for the good of His people God's Providence that demonstrate that He is in control of all things God's Presence that He will never leave you or forsake you Generations: The Real Differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents - and What They Mean for America's Future by Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D. Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices by Thomas Brooks One of the purposes of suffering is that you'll be able to take the comfort that God has shown you and share that with others going through difficult times. Read 2 Corinthians 1 for more on this. How to best prepare for suffering: Get in the Word so that you can draw close to God and gain an eternal perspective on things Build deep Christ-centered community Prayerfully seek God and His Promises, His Providence, and His Presence in the midst of tough times. What can be done with generational fractures that feel irreparable? If there's any question Russell Moore hears regularly, it's that one. On today's episode of The Russell Moore Show, he and psychologist Jean Twenge consider what the answer may be in light of Twenge's new book, Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents—and What They Mean for America's Future. Twenge, a professor at San Diego State University, and Moore discuss the differences—and lack of differences—between generations. They consider why our current government leaders are so much older than most of the population, how the naming of children signals generational changes, and the influence of technology on increased individualism. They talk about how people of various ages value self-esteem, how smartphones affect rates of mental health issues, and the implications of society's reconception of marriage. Tune in for a nuanced conversation of generational trends as they pertain to politics, sexuality, raising children, and institutions. The United States is currently home to six generations of people: -the Silents, born 1925-1945 -Baby Boomers, born 1946-1964 -Gen X, born 1965-1979 -Millennials, born 1980-1994 -Gen Z, born 1995-2012 -and the still-to-be-named cohorts born after 2012. They have had vastly different life experiences and thus, one assumes, they must have vastly diverging beliefs and behaviors. But what are those differences, what causes them, and how deep do they actually run? Professor of psychology and "reigning expert on generational change" (Lisa Wade, PhD, author of American Hookup), Jean Twenge does a deep dive into a treasure trove of long-running, government-funded surveys and databases to answer these questions. Are we truly defined by major historical events, such as the Great Depression for the Silents and September 11 for Millennials? Or, as Twenge argues, is it the rapid evolution of technology that differentiates the generations? With her clear-eyed and insightful voice, Twenge explores what the Silents and Boomers want out of the rest of their lives; how Gen X-ers are facing middle age; the ideals of Millennials as parents and in the workplace; and how Gen Z has been changed by COVID, among other fascinating topics. From the Silent Generation to Gen Z, different generations have distinct behaviors, values, and attitudes that were shaped by the events during their formative years. However, the most significant factor influencing generational differences is technology. While technological progress has led to more individualism, it also can have negative impacts on mental health, leading to depression and suicide.Jean M. Twenge is a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, consultant, public speaker, and author of a number of books. Her most recent book “Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents―and What They Mean for America's Future” explores how different generations connect, conflict, and compete with one another.Jean and Greg discuss the most critical influences on different generations' experiences, such as parenting styles and technology, and the importance of understanding and respecting other generations' viewpoints.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:The negative impact of social media on mental health19:35: Right around that time, 2012, teens also started to spend a lot less time with their friends in person. So that had been on a slow decline since about 2000, but it fell off a cliff in the age of the smartphone. Teens also started spending less time sleeping right around that time. So, basically, the way they spent their time outside of school fundamentally changed. They started spending a lot more time online. A lot less time with their friends in person and less time sleeping. And that's not a good formula for mental health. So that's one of the mechanisms. And there's all of the others—all of the negative content that people come across on social media. Cyberbullying, the social comparison because everybody else's life is more glamorous. Body image issues, which have been well documented, including by the company Facebook themselves, who owns Instagram, found that Instagram led to body image issues among teen girls and young women. So, it's all of these mechanisms that the end result is more depression.Depression isn't just about emotions; it's about cognition.30:15: Depression isn't just about emotions; it's about cognition. It's about how you see the world, and so when more people are depressed, then you'll get that, as we do between millennials and Gen Z, that shift from optimism to pessimism, and pessimism and negativity are not all bad. If they're channeled into action, they can be a good thing. One dilemma of individualism40:01: That's one of the dilemmas of individualism, particularly for young adults: There's a lot more freedom, not as much restriction, on what I mean, it's just one example, like what you're going to do for your career. It used to be that was, not exclusively, but certainly heavily influenced by your race and your gender, and that's not true as much anymore. So it opens up many more possibilities. It also means, though, that there's a lot of choices, and that can sometimes be overwhelming. To what extent are the rise in depression and the data simply an acknowledgment that it's okay to have mental health issues?41:49: We know for sure that just more willingness to admit symptoms or problems doesn't explain the rise in mental health issues. Because if it was just that, you wouldn't see the rise in emergency room visits for self-harm, suicide attempts, or completed suicides, and not only is there that rise, but the pattern is about the same as the reports of symptoms.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at San Diego State UniversityJean M. Gen Z-ers are more likely to identify as gender fluid, trans or nonbinary than older generations. The question is: Why? Jean M. Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the various theories as to why this generation seems more comfortable with an array of identities. Her book is “Generations: The Real Difference Between Gen Z, Millenials, Gen X, Boomers and the Silent Generation.”

There are currently six adult generations living and working together in the United States! Today Jay is joined by Dr. Jean M. Twenge, author of the brand new book Generations: The Real Differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents – and What They Mean for America's Future. Dr. Twenge brings insights from analyzing over 38 million people from 21 different datasets to share how technology is the driving factor for the great differences between generations. As we consider the radically different world our parents and grandparents grew up in, Dr. Twenge also gives advice to parents on how to best set their own children up to avoid the higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation so common in the youngest generation. Jean Twenge has spent her entire academic career – 30 years – studying generational differences, and this book, Generations: The Real Differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and Silents – and What They Mean for America's Future (978-1-9821-8161-1, April 25, 2023), is her magnum opus. Its analysis is derived from 21 huge datasets that go back to the 1940s and are as recent as this year, spanning some 38 million people. Jean is the gold standard in decoding and unpacking massive data sets. Who knew that the generation you were born into -- obviously through no choice of your own -- could shape SO much of who you are? Today we're talking about a really interesting topic: The six currently living generations, spanning the Silents (the oldest of whom were born in 1925) to the Polars (who are being born even as you read this). Why does our generation have so much influence over us? And what are each of the generations like? This and so much more are covered in today's episode. Today's episode is humming with knowledge, living nutrients, ecology and joy. We welcome interdisciplinary healer and ally of the natural world, Molly Helfend. Originally from the Santa Monica Mountains, she now calls the cliffs of New Zealand home but makes Nature itself her official residence. Her commitment to mother earth began at a young age: protesting the Keystone XL pipeline and interning with Greenpeace and working with Rainforest Action Network to develop campaigns against palm oil plantations in the Sumatran Rainforest. Later, Molly's environmental work and activism took a serendipitous turn into ethnobotany, herbalism, and education. Molly now works across the globe as an ethnobotanist, herbalist, natural health practitioner, creative, content director, visual artist, educator, world traveler and writer. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and Holistic Health from the University of Vermont, Masters of Science in Ethnobotany from the University of Kent, and researched her Masters thesis in New Zealand studying the correlation between the Maori concept Kaitiakitanga translated as “guardianship of nature and plant life”. She has endeavored to embody that philosophy in her work as a herbalist and naturopath, as well as in her personal life, while maintaining a commitment to indigenous cultural competency and responsibility. In our conversation, Molly graciously opens up to us about intimate, life changing experiences such as fighting a parasite she developed from the Cook Islands and experiencing copper poisoning from an IUD that led her on a healing journey working with natural remedies. These experiences have inspired her to educate others on all the powers of plants, herbs, and holistic medicine. She shares her insights with us in an open, transparent and informative dialogue that reminds us of our innate interconnectedness with Earth and the healing potential within the ecological lens. Are we taking seriously the call to pass on our faith to the next generation? How we do that? What values are most important to the young people in our communities? Does the church actually have something to say to the issues our youth are facing? In today's episode, Krista Penner from our Leadership Development team talks with Sid Koop, Executive Director of Truth Matters Ministries, and Joshua Kazakoff, Pastor of Youth & Community Groups at Central Baptist Church about how the church can get serious about reaching young people and how to do that effectively. “Narcissist” is a word that gets thrown quite a bit, including by me -- often, semi-facetiously, about myself. But until this conversation, I didn’t actually know what the word meant. My guest today is Keith Campbell, who’s been researching narcissism for more than 30 years. He’s got a new book called The New Science of Narcissism. In this episode, we talk about the difference between garden variety narcissism and the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, the difference between grandiose narcissism and vulnerable narcissism, what to do with if you’re married to a narcissist, how to identify your own narcissism, and what he calls the CPR method for narcissism control. I’m honored to share today's episode, a conversation three years in the making with Rachel Macy Stafford, that arrives during remarkably challenging times, just as we need Rachel’s wisdom most. Rachel is a writer with one goal: to help people choose love as much as humanly possible. A New York Times bestselling author, her latest book is Live Love Now: Relieve the Pressure and Find Real Connection with Our Kids. She’s also the New York Times bestselling author of Hands Free Mama, Hands Free Life, and Only Love Today; a certified special education teacher with a Master’s Degree in education; an in-demand speaker featured on CNN, Good Morning America, Global News, TIME.com, FoxNews.com, as well as in hundreds of other online and print publications and a beloved blogger who inspires millions in her weekly blog posts at HandsFreeMama.com and through her supportive Facebook community, The Hands Free Revolution. Like so many of her followers, I stumbled upon Rachel’s work years ago, and her writing immediately became a light on my path to more fully live my purpose. I'm so grateful that I had this time to talk with Rachel, to explore the threads of presence and authenticity that weave through so much of her journey, to understand that facing our truths is just the beginning of unexpected invitations, and to remember what’s possible for our children to live a present-filled, purpose-filled life when we step forward to do that first. This conversation with Rachel and her beautiful new book, which I hope you will get and savor as I have been doing, will make you want to show up for yourself and your children in profound new ways and to embody her underlying message, to Live Love Now. Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. Rachel's quest for purpose and the legacy she wants to leave How reflecting on the question "How do I do it all?" on a run one day became the "spark moment" that pushed Rachel to choose herself What Rachel means by her connection to her "dreamer girl" Why facing the truth is really just the beginning What it means when Rachel says to her children "I want to love you by your book." Hands-Free Mama as a way of being The pressure and insecurity of online life and how screentime distraction becomes the biggest obstacle to living purpose-filled The 3 roles that will allow us to walk beside our kids Finding your place of refuge and helping your kids find theirs How we can "find our people" by doing the things our heart calls us to do The tear-filled pledge I made to Rachel, reading from a promise in her book on p.57 This Week's Challenge: For this week’s challenge, Rachel encourages us to think about any hurtful comments, criticism, consciously and unconsciously, that we’ve been carrying around that’s holding us back from truly fulfilling our purpose. Twenge Announcements: Honoring George Floyd By Stepping Into Empathy And Action I want to acknowledge the pain and horror so many of us are feeling at the killing of another black man by a police officer, in the death of George Floyd. Rachel’s gift is to invite us to be present and purposeful in our lives and that same presence and purpose calls us now to take that pain and turn it into deeper understanding and action. To support that, in the show notes, I’m including a link to an episode I recorded a few years ago with the co-founder of Mother’s Against Police Brutality Sara Mokuria, and to a set of Anti-Racism resources that Rachel shared in a post, she wrote today. Also in that post, Rachel offered these words from her new book Live Love Now, that I invite us to sit with, along with a few moments of silence, to honor George Floyd, and so many other men like him. We’ve spent this season on the podcast exploring the beauty of an excellent life. And our listener-heroes have some difficult questions about the process of daring to excel. You asked: What role does FEAR play in advancing our best work? Is the rise of entrepreneurship bringing with it a destructive rise of SELF-CENTEREDNESS? How do you protect the INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY of your brand’s frameworks? Today, Jeffrey tackles the themes of fear, self-interest and intellectual property in the life of an entrepreneur. He explains how positive stressors can serve to deepen our insight and shares his process of inquiry when catastrophic thinking takes over. Jeffrey also reflects on the difference between self-interest and self-centeredness, discussing Adam Grant’s research around balancing self- and other-interest to have the most significant impact. Finally, he offers several current examples of egregious self-interest AND robust other-interest, addressing what we can do as entrepreneurs to keep our egos in check. Listen in for insight around how Jeffrey protects his brand language and frameworks—and learn how to approach someone who seems to be appropriating your intellectual property. Student's will re-imagine The Atlantic article Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation by Jean M. Twenge to explore how it relates to Malvern Prep students. Each class will produce four different episodes that tackle this debate.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Alongside the meteoric rise, popularity and societal influence of smartphones, many have voiced concern about their impact - especially on younger users. This week, we examine and respond to a September 2017 article in The Atlantic by Jean M. Twenge which looks at several topics surrounding the smartphone's cultural ramifications. In particular, she pursues issues tied to teenage smartphone users. How might today's teens be less social, more risk-averse and less independent than those of yesteryear? What can we learn about human or adolescent nature by observing smartphone use or overuse?
