A 5-minute update from Podcast Brunch Club: geoengineering playlist, new podcasts, all about chocolate, vulnerable moments & more...
First, we hear a short piece from an episode on the Podcast Brunch Club - it's a free event, it's virtual, it's like a book club, but it's about podcasts, in this case, geo-engineering, simply listen to them and talk about what you heard with other listeners. Our first of two stories from The New York Times is also about geo-engineering: “What's the Least Bad Way to Cool the Planet?”; “As Bikers Throng the Streets, ‘It's Like Paris Is in Anarchy'”; The Guardian has four stories that relate to the climate crisis: “Coffee bean price spike just a taste of what's to come with climate change”; “39 Insulate Britain activists arrested after halting traffic on M1 and M4”; “From Corrie to car ads, carbon literacy training pushes climate to the fore”; “Poor countries must not be forced to take on debt to tackle climate crisis”; “Australia's ‘black summer' bushfires pushed 11 bee species closer to extinction”; From Friends of the Earth Melbourne: “Offshore gas levy will protect oceans and communities”; The Melbourne Age tells readers: “Thirty-six new electric buses by 2025 as Melbourne company awarded $2.3b contract”; Now it's two stories from Medium: “Who Is Responsible for Global Warming?”; “Global Warming and Arctic Polar Amplification”; Listen to Joel Berger on ABC: “Joel Berger: Extreme conservationist”: We have a trio of stories from SBS: “Big nations urged to heed climate activists' demands for action ahead of UN COP26”; “Scott Morrison confirms he's unlikely to attend UN climate summit in Glasgow”; “Australia's climate commitments 'inadequate', Turnbull says”; From The New Daily: “Alan Kohler: Australia's net-zero target must include legislation”; From Inside Climate News, it's: “Warming Trends: Cruise Ship Impacts, a Buoy Inside the Hurricane's Eye and Anticipating Climate Tipping Points”; Democracy Now! tells readers: “Right Livelihood Award Goes to Environmental Activists, Rights Defenders Across the Globe”; A fashion label that is climate-friendly from a factory that is ethically certified. Adela Mizrachi is a Communications Specialist, for the Institute for Public Health and Medicine at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine and the Founder of the Podcast Brunch Club. What started as her personal desire to listen to podcasts with her friends, has blossomed into an international club. The PBC is currently available in 6 countries and more than 70 cities across the US. The PBC planning team comes up with a theme for each month. They research a variety of podcasts that fit that theme and listen to a sampling to narrow their selection to four podcasts. Members gather locally and virtually to discuss the playlist. Episode 127. “We really need routines, so our reptilian brain isn't on high alert/alarm mode all the time.” ~Mira Binzen One of the throughlines to emerge from our exploration of not your typical self-care is the basic human need for routine, some sort of practical ritual that anchors us to calm even during life's daily chaos. Mira Binzen believes the power of practice lies in its rigor and discipline - two words the commercial well-being industry willfully ignores. She has a keen understanding of the adjustments needed to return emotional, behavioral, and physiological systems to balance. As a yogi with a background in developmental therapy working with children who have sensory processing issues, aromatherapy is one of her favorite tools. Adolescents aren't the only ones in need of self-regulation assistance these days. Most of us have spent the last year swinging from manic productive impulses to bone-deep lethargy. The use of oils and oil blends as part of long-range self-care practice works to even out those opposing drives. There's a science to scent, of course, but you don't have to understand the process behind its power. “You already know,” says Mira, somehow addressing both essential oils and our intrinsic need to return to the rigor of our routines. “We don't trust ourselves, or we wonder if we're doing it right or enough, and you are. You are. Trust yourself.” Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Episode 126. “I think that a lot of Black people are waking up to our beauty and our majesty and looking at... we are not who we have been reported to be.” ~Lisa Lackey The sun is setting a bit later these days (hurray!), so I thought I'd take Creative Impostor listeners back to an episode I recorded around the time of the winter solstice, those darkest days of the year. Hear me out. I promise this conversation remains relevant to our time, regardless of what the calendar says, and our ongoing exploration of not your typical self-care regimes. Lisa Lackey, M.A., LCPC, CSAT, CMAT, lays out her fundamental approach to some of life's most vexing challenges: depression and the generational traumas that often compound it. Racism, too, and the cultural norms embedded within our public and private approaches to mental well-being. Besides being one of my podcast clients, Lisa is an insightful, some might say even a prescient person. OK, I am saying that because our chat back in December touches on issues that many of us are experiencing today. Yes, it's easy to forecast the spirit-crushing lethargy to come at the onset of a midwestern winter. Yes, it's just as simple to predict nationwide sadness over the first anniversary of the pandemic, with its unfathomable death count and slow vaccination rollout. Coupled with the country's ongoing racial reckoning, however, it's been starkly apparent to me how many people in my personal and professional circles have all - very recently - reported feeling something more profound than a passing case of the winter blues. For a collective depression this deep, the self-care must be revolutionary. This episode hits the trifecta by exploring the bold, messy, and real issues that are keeping us apart while simultaneously drawing us closer together. Two brilliant series from Lisa Black Women, Racism, and Trauma and Black Woman Burnout are available now on Insideout Conversations. The episode I specifically referenced (and sobbed while editing) was 36: Black women, racism, trauma, and our beautiful bodies. Episode 065. “We will lose something very, very fundamental to what it is to be human if we start interacting solely online.” ~Adela Mizrachi Want an inspiring story about the power of personal passion coupled with organic audience growth? Excellent because we’re talking six continent expansion! Looking to add just one more podcast to your queue? Great! Podcast Envy is about to tumble down the glorious rabbit hole that is Podcast Brunch Club, a “little weird project” Adela Mizrachi created in 2015 as a way to get together with like-minded listeners (as opposed to creators) for food, conversation and podcast camaraderie. Today, the book club for podcasts boasts 80 chapters around the globe and has recorded close to 100 of its own episodes - all in just five years. With the pandemic shuttering restaurants and drastically limiting gatherings, in real life feels like a foreign concept now. The pause is giving Adela time to consider ways of finally monetizing her highly successful “little weird project”. In the meantime, she spends her free time working on the PBC podcast and its social media. “I think the beauty of Podcast Brunch Club is giving everybody else a voice and giving everybody else the space to talk to each other.” Eventually, in person and with waffles. In a company blog post, VP and head of global advertising business Jay Richman said that the service is "taking formats that traditionally have been more of a static experience and making it a more personalized and attractive one." That said, in a story for The Verge, Ashley Carman explains that while Spotify's new technology breaks ground in the industry, it also puts consumer privacy at risk. "Podcasts are sensitive listening data — the topics can be niche and revealing — so users rightly might have privacy concerns about how what they consume will be siphoned back to brands," says Carman. When Richman was asked about these issues, he responded that consumers can opt-out of data targeting. If you want more information on this topic, head to the Snacks Daily podcast. Hosts Nick and Jack share some more information about how strategic ad insertion will appear in your listening experience.Mermaid Palace, Kaitlin Prest's new production house, is bringing The Heart back to the podcast airwaves in partnership with Radiotopia. In its inaugural installment, Prest "explores a friendship, an 'artnership,' and an idea of what would happen if two radical young women took their politics to their most extreme conclusion." The first episode drops on Jan. 15. Gimlet Media's podcast about Black culture, The Nod, is ending. Hosts Eric Eddings and Brittany Luse announced the news in their most recent episode. However, starting in April we'll be able to watch the show (which will move to a daily cadence) via the new Quibi video service. Moving back and forth between cultures during her childhood caused some problems, making her feel sometimes like she didn't fit in in either place. It wasn't until she got to college where was able to accept and begin to integrate her two identities. Ironically, it's only been since she started living in China, and she picked up an insatiable travel bug, that she's been able to finally get a sense of where "Home" is in all of that. For now, anyway. Note: This interview was recorded live at meeting of the Beijing chapter of Podcast Brunch Club, which is why you'll hear some moving about and the occasional clinking of glasses and silverware. in the background. With today’s episode, we’re starting something new. On November 12, 2019, Harvard Business Press will be releasing a new version of my book Disrupt Yourself. As a countdown of sorts, we’re going to spend the next seven episodes focusing on the seven-point framework of personal disruption. These seven accelerants help you manage through – even embrace change - whether at work or at home. Today, we’ll be talking about accelerant one - taking the right risks. We covered this in-depth in episode 100, and we’ll link to that in the show notes, but in short, we take the right risks when we take on market risk instead of competitive risk and play where others aren’t playing. My guest today is a great example of a person taking on market risk - Adela Mizrachi, founder of the Podcast Brunch Club. Links and free resource available at https://whitneyjohnson.com/129
The idea behind this show is pretty simple: We invite scholars, makers, and professionals out to brunch for an informal conversation about their work, and then we turn those brunches into a podcast. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.Like us, Adela Mizrachi works in communications at a university, but that’s not the reason we asked her to come on the show. At least not the main one.See, Adela is also the founder of something called Podcast Brunch Club, which interested us because … well, for the exact reason you’d expect. So we, a podcast that records over brunch, invited her out to brunch, to talk about Podcast Brunch Club, the Podcast Brunch Club podcast, and trends in podcasting as a whole.Did we mention podcasts? Or brunch? And fun story: Since we recorded this interview, one of our very own listeners, Joseph Caudle, has started a Podcast Brunch Club chapter right here in South Bend. There are currently more than 60 such chapters around the world.LINKSPodcast Brunch Club website: podcastbrunchclub.comForbes Q&A with Adela: Is The Podcast Club The New Book Club?
Many of you have heard of Podcast Brunch Club but may not know much about the Founder and Co-Host of the PBC Podcast, Adela. Adela is from Chicago and is back living there now but there was a time period when she traveled extensively for work. In fact, she even lived overseas for part of this time period. As we do, we chatted with Adela about her online activities before, during and after this time abroad. There are some pretty interesting trends in how she kept in touch with her home country and traveling/expat friends and in how all of these virtual behaviors shaped what she does with the huge Podcast Brunch Club community of 65+ chapters globally. Season 2 has wrapped, but I'm dropping this special bonus episode as a "Going On Hiatus" present. This past spring, I organized a Beijing chapter of Podcast Brunch Club, a global community of podcast enthusiasts who gather each month to talk about what they're listening to and share recommendations. To help things along, leaders provide a Listening List of podcast episodes that follow a topic, which the local chapters discuss when they meet. "It's like book club, but for podcasts!" June's topic, Understanding China, was a great opportunity for PBC members who live in the country to share their insights with folks in chapters around the world, so we planned to livecast our conversation. That didn't work out so well (because China- thanks GFW!), but we recorded the audio to share with them anyway, and I'm dropping it here! It was a lively discussion that featured a collection of expats/migrants and local Chinese who had lots to say about what western media gets right about China, and what they often leave out of their narratives. To learn about PBC & to find a chapter near you, reach out to them online: Web: https://www.podcastbrunchclub.com Twitter: @podcastbrunch Instagram: @podcastbrunch Season 3 is coming in September! In this podcast episode we chat with China-United States Binational Documentarian Hao Wu about how his movement between these two countries has affected what he has done online, both in personal and professional capacities. Hao grew up in China and has had healthy movement from China to the U.S. and back in his adult life. Although he is currently based in New York City, he admits that he is most interested in stories about China. One of these China focused projects, People's Republic of Desire, is about the Chinese live streaming platform YY and specifically about two popular Hosts on the platform. This documentary was screened in Shanghai, where I am currently living, earlier this year. Shannon Martin of Podbean and our local Host of the Podcast Brunch Club was there as well. In fact, during the screening and for days after the event, Shannon and I exchanged ideas, questions and ponderings about the documentary. We are very grateful that Hao was kind enough to agree to an interview so we could ask him about when the Internet became an integral part of his daily life, how creating a documentary about the trials and tribulations of live streaming for years affected his own online activities and the how his online tasks change, even now, when he flies from the U.S. to China and vice versa. Note: Hao's latest project, All In My Family, about his alternative family journey from within a traditional Chinese family structure, is on Netflix May 3rd, 2019.More info: https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatsonline/13Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/geopats/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacyCheck it out: https://www.getrevue.co/profile/stephfuccio

Adela and Sara discuss the podcast playlist on Language, which included episodes from The Allusionist, Ologies, Twenty Thousand Hertz, and Hidden Brain. Then, as usual, they diverge from the assigned listening list to talk about the recent Podcast Brunch Club meetings that happened in Houston and Chicago and some of the recommendations that came out of those meetings.
Adela discusses citizen science with the host of the Prognosis podcast, Michelle Fay Cortez. In this roundup episode, Sara and Adela chat about the deep dive Podcast Brunch Club did into the Last Seen podcast. We also get feedback from PBC members worldwide on whether a limited run series, like Last Seen, needs a conclusion to feel satisfying. Adela and Sara then diverge from the binge listen and do a year-end superlatives award segment for the podcast landscape.
Sara interviews Kelly Horan, senior producer and a senior reporter of the Last Seen podcast from WBUR and The Boston Globe. Podcast Brunch Club did things a little differently this month: rather than a thematic podcast playlist, PBC members worldwide did a deep dive into the Last Seen podcast. The podcast explored the largest unsolved art heist in history, which was the theft of 13 artworks from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990.

I love my job as a podcast editor. I get to listen to podcasts every day and get paid for it, and my clients are absolutely wonderful, as many podcasters often are. One of my clients, Catherine, is the producer for Solo Travel Talk with Astrid Clements of AstridTravel.com. Every episode I listen to, I find out about travel destinations that all end up going on my bucket list. But when I edited a particular episode, answering questions about today's topic as it pertains to different parts of the world, I was fascinated to find out that it was more than what I assumed was a way of saying thank you to a restaurant server. When I was in Washington, DC, a few weeks ago, I stopped at the International Spy Museum before leaving. I could have stayed in there for hours, and it was incredible to see these gadgets and spy equipment that we normally only see in movies. But a set of pictures intrigued me. They were of both Union and Confederate soldiers using the topic of today's episode to spy on one another. Not only would they use this to observe the enemy, but they were also able to learn the terrain of the battlefield, take inventory, and even aim accordingly in the direction of the oncoming enemy. Oh, and this “spy vehicle” wasn't concealed at all. You're listening to The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History of the Ordinary. This past year has been one of the busiest I've ever had. I could never have imagined two years ago that starting this podcast would have brought me the most amazing listeners in the world or that they would go from listeners to the best book launch team I could have imagined. Since we're celebrating Thanksgiving in the United States this week, I wanted to take a moment to tell you how thankful I am for everything you've done for me and this podcast. From sharing the show with your friends and family, to writing such kind words and Amazon reviews for The Story Behind book, to supporting the show on Patreon, and for all those times you've shared trivia you've learned on the show or shared trivia back with me. I hope your holiday season is a happy one. And I look forward to seeing where The Story Behind goes in 2019, because you've proven that even though I write and produce the show, you are actually what makes the show great. So, thank you! I hope listeners in the United States had a lovely Thanksgiving and hopefully can have some fun conversation about today's topic while eating the leftovers. Sorry for the delayed episode this week! If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you may have seen that I went to DC Podfest. And the first day I was there, I woke up with the beginnings of a cold. Luckily, I was able to get a hold of a bottle of Zicam fairly quickly and stave off the cold for a few days … until I got home. And then, it hit. This week has been a bit of a fever dream for me, but it made me start to wonder about some of the things we say when we're sick and the origins, so get ready for a bit of an etymology episode. But as long as there have been humans, humans have been getting sick, and many of these idioms carry a lot of unverifiable history with them. And, much like the cure for the common cold, the true origin stories of these phrases may never be found. You're listening to The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History of the Ordinary. If you follow @StoryBehindPod on Instagram, you may have seen that I went to Boston last weekend for the Sound Education conference at Harvard University to be on a panel with other history podcasters that included Liz Covart from Ben Franklin's World, Patrick Wyman from Tides of History, and David Stenhouse from BackStory. I respect these podcasters greatly and it was such an honor to be in the same room as them. Because my travel schedule is pretty hectic this month, I only stayed in Boston for one day so I didn't get to experience anything outside of Harvard and the train station, but if you've ever been to Boston, you know that it seems there's history on every street. I got to hang out with Chris Nesi from The House of #EdTech podcast while I was there and he suggested I do an episode relating to Boston. Since any history regarding Boston would be a huge undertaking, I wanted to pick something a little more obscure, but still very much Boston-related. And food is always one of my favorite topics to research. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind Boston Baked Beans. Find out more about The Story Behind Book! This is a very special episode of The Story Behind. Believe it or not, two years ago I pressed Publish on the first three episodes of this podcast, The Story Behind the Theremin, The Story Behind Dry Ice, and The Story Behind Sugar Skulls. This podcast was supposed to be a side-project for me. It was supposed to just take up a little of my time, so I could continue my hobby of podcasting while holding a full-time job and when I was pregnant with my son. That's what it was supposed to be. But in the two years since the show began, it took on more. It became my favorite distraction. It allowed me to geek out over things I never had a reason to learn otherwise. And it kept my brain from going to complete mush with pregnancy brain and post-partum brain. Plus, it led me to a career in podcasting and finally, it became the basis for The Story Behind book. Now, after last year's one-year and 100th episode special of The Story Behind The Musical, which was sung, I knew it would take a lot to top that for this year's episode. In fact, it's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you. There's nothing that a 100 episodes or more could ever do. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind “Africa” by Toto. If you're a parent who has even been on Pinterest and looked for activities for your child, you've probably seen at least a dozen different recipes for modeling clay or sensory dough, as it's sometimes called. Most of the recipes are different variations on the mixture of flour, water and salt dough I remember using to make Christmas ornaments. So, one morning this week, I was searching for a recipe for my son. I spent a good 20 minutes making it, mixing in different colors, getting just the right proportions of flour to water to coconut oil so it wouldn't stick to my hands or leave a greasy mess, only to have my son pick it up, drop it on the cat, and decide he was done with it. 20 minutes of making it, only to have it covered in cat hair after a minute or so. After all that, I threw away the dough I had made and added today's topic to the shopping list partially because it was easier to keep in the house and more convenient. Adela chats with Dylan Marron, the creator behind the Conversations With People Who Hate Me podcast. His episode entitled Sissies and Flaming Queens was featured on our podcast playlist on Common Ground, along with episodes from Our Americana and The Spin. A little background on Dylan: he is an award-winning writer, performer, and video maker who focuses on social justice issues. He is the voice of Carlos on the hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale, an alum of the New York Neo Futurists, and the creator of Every Single Word, a video series that edits down popular films to only feature the words spoken by people of color. Dylan also created, hosted, and produced a number of shows on Seriously.tv, including Sitting in Bathrooms with Trans People, Shutting Down Bullsh*t, and the Unboxing series. Because of his work, Dylan receives a lot of negative messages on the internet. In his podcast, Conversations with People Who Hate Me, he calls some of the folks who wrote those messages to ask one simple question: why? The podcast takes contentious online conversations and moves them offline. In new episodes he will moderate conversations between people who have exchanged their own digital negativity. The podcast was selected as a Podcast Pick by USA Today & The Guardian. The show just won a Webby Award for Best Individual Episode and a Webby Honoree for Best Podcast Series. As if all of this isn’t enough, Dylan was ALSO a speaker at TED 2018 in Vancouver that took place just last month. Thanks for listening! If you have any feedback, email Adela at adela@podcastbrunchclub.com. Also, think about joining one of the many Podcast Brunch Club chapters worldwide or subscribe to the newsletter so you can get the playlist as soon as it’s published every month. This month, Adela sits down with Sara DaSilva, founder of Audible Feast, to discuss the PBC listening list on gangs. The Podcast Brunch Club picks are intended to educate us about the reasons people join gangs, their motivation for staying in them, and how they can impact a community. Due to a code of secrecy within a gang and the threat of violence if that trust is broken, stories of life on the inside can be scarce, and even unbelievable at times. Gangs are unlikely to disappear anytime soon, given the connection to and prevalence of drugs and class disparity, so let’s learn a little about why they continue to exist and draw more members into the fold.

Every month we send out a curated list of 3-5 podcast episodes that center around a chosen theme. We all listen on our own time and meet up in person to discuss (like book club!). The podcast will be bringing part of that discussion directly to your earbuds. There are lots of ways to get involved with PBC: Join or start an in-person PBC chapter where you live Sign up for the newsletter Participate online by joining our Facebook Group and following us on Twitter Happy listening!

Adela Mizrachi tells us all about the formation and inspiration behind the Podcast Brunch Club.
