Filmmaker Richard Linklater's movies span blockbusters, such as School of Rock, cerebral indie classics like Boyhood, and a hard-to-define The Before Trilogy. His most recent film, Hit Man, is a thriller, but it picks up on many themes that Linklater has explored before, such as identity and masculinity. Today, he reflects on the film in conversation with Lilah. -------Our film critic Danny Leigh's review of Hit Man is here: https://on.ft.com/4fGIDidDanny also spoke with Richard Linklater in 2018 about his portrayal of masculinity in the movie Last Flag Flying: https://on.ft.com/3Va6v5L-------The show is ending in early January. But we want to know your cultural questions! Write to Lilah at lilahrap@ft.com or on Instagram @lilahrap. And – thank you.Read a transcript of this episode on FT.com Hosted on Acast. Editor Sandra Adair, ACE and assistant editor Carissa Bronson HIT MAN editor Sandra Adair, ACE is no stranger to working with writer/director Richard Linklater. The two first collaborated on Linklater's debut studio feature, DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993). Over the next thirty years they would go on to make the "Before" trilogy - BEFORE SUNRISE (1995), BEFORE SUNSET (2004), BEFORE MIDNIGHT (2013), as well as the over-a-decade-in-the-making BOYHOOD (2014), for which Sandra would receive an Oscar® nomination for Best Film Editing. Someone else Sandra has had by her side in the cutting for several years is assistant editor Carissa Bronson, who first worked with Sandra on her documentary, THE SECRET LIFE OF LANCE LETSCHER (2017). The somewhat true story of HIT MAN tells the tale of Gary Johnson, who is a professor of psychology and philosophy at the University of New Orleans, while also working undercover with the New Orleans Police Department to assist in undercover sting operations. When Jasper, a fellow cop who portrays fake hitmen to solicit murder-for-hire confessions and payments from “customers,” is suspended, Gary is unwillingly ushered into the role. Gary quickly finds himself to be a natural in garnering solicitations, going so far as to research suspects in advance and tailor a unique persona for each one. Things take a big turn for Gary when he meets Madison, a beautiful woman who tries to contract "Ron" (Gary) to kill her abusive husband. SANDRA ADAIR, ACE Sandra Adair is known for her work on BOYHOOD (2014), BERNIE (2012), SCHOOL OF ROCK (2003), and the cult classic DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993). Adair is also known for her work on the critically acclaimed 'Before' trilogy, BEFORE SUNRISE (1995), BEFORE SUNSET (2004) and BEFORE MIDNIGHT (2013). Adair made her directorial debut with the feature documentary, THE SECRET LIFE OF LANCE LETSCHER (2017). CARISSA BRONSON In addition to HIT MAN, Carissa Bronson is known for films such as LAST FLAG FLYING (2017) and WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE (2019). A road trip through a chilly New England winter represents only one section of Alexander Payne's THE HOLDOVERS, but the film's overlap with Hal Ashby's THE LAST DETAIL goes beyond that narrative echo. As in Ashby's 1973 film, one of the examples of 1970s cinema Payne drew on for the look and feel of THE HOLDOVERS, a central triumvirate of two adults and their younger charge have a funny but imperfect bonding experience that avoids simplistic found-family conclusions. We talk through the ways THE HOLDOVERS finds nuance in its different permutations of that trio before turning back to THE LAST DETAIL to compare these films' versions of “showing the kid a good time” in spite of bitter cold and absent parents. And in Your Next Picture Show we stick up for LAST FLAG FLYING, Richard Linklater's little-loved “spiritual sequel” to THE LAST DETAIL. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE LAST DETAIL, THE HOLDOVERS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Two episodes in a week?! What a treat. Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler are back with a look at the films of 1973. The two movies discussed come from different countries and represent popular film movements coming out of each. Jake assigns Brad Hal Ashby's The Last Detail, a road movie starring Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, and a very young Randy Quaid. They talk about subcultures of the time, and the style that many New Hollywood-era films were interested in. And by the way, when Brad says God of Carnage in this conversation, he means Carnal Knowledge. Brad then throws it to Jake to watch Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades. They talk about this bloody, exploitative martial arts film and the deluge of similar films that came out of Japan around this time. They talk about its influence on modern franchises like Star Wars, and the clear (and admitted) influence it had on Quentin Tarantino. Other movies discussed in this episode: The Tale of Zatoichi (1962), Blood Feast (1963), Easy Rider (1969), Carnal Knowledge (1971), Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart on the River Styx (1972), Lady Snowblood (1973), Fantastic Planet (1973), Robin Hood (1973), The Last of Sheila (1973), Live and Let Die (1973), Magnum Force (1973), The Exorcist (1973), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973), American Graffiti (1973), The Sting (1973), Mean Streets (1973), Badlands (1973), Paper Moon (1973), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Last Flag Flying (2017).

Vexillologists should be delighted this week as we attempt to raise the cinematic banner as high as we can when we discuss the top 5 Flags. From fictional countries to cartoon weaponry, it's actually churches that prove to be a surprisingly good place to go to collect them, after all it's a great place to seek pennants. LAST FLAG FLYING is Richard Linklater's frequently moving but not entirely successful exploration of patriotism, friendship and loss which sees former Marine Larry "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) reunite with Vietnam veterans Sal (Bryan Cranston) and the Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) in order to bury his son, killed in action in Iraq. When a dark truth emerges about Larry Jr.'s death, Doc resolves to bring his son home to bury him in his civilian clothing alongside his recently deceased wife. Along the way, the three men find themselves coming to terms with the shared experiences of a war that continues to shape their lives through painful physical and mental trauma. The meaning of heroism is a complex issue which the movie handles sensitively and the movie is at its best when the leads are allowed to breathe life into thin characters. Sitcom style asides like Sal and Mueller being arrested as terrorists or a trip to buy a newfangled thing called a mobile phone are a distraction from the more interesting thematic content of the movie. Staple of 80's Sunday night television, BULLSEYE is our kids tv selection this week as we take a look back at a time when moustaches were thick, mullets were magnificent, and working class northerners were paraded on British tv for the very first time vying for the chance to win a washing machine, toaster or of course a speedboat. Jim Bowen doesn't look a day over sixty-five which is a shame because he was 44 when he hosted episode four of the first season, the instalment we watched for this review. Find out just why there were so many speedboats, reminisce about the casual sexism and homophobia and find out which serial killer was convicted using evidence from the show.We love to hear from our listeners! As Tate, Sage, and Jacob move past their 100th episode, Jacob revisits the well of Richard Linklater, turning to his 2017 movie Last Flag Flying starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburn. Jacob overuses the word "pointed", Sage makes multiple analogies, and Tate discovers he may be a follower when it comes to comedies. This movie was directed by Richard Linklater. Original Date: November 27, 2017With how much ground your friends in podcasting cover on this week's show, you'll forgive them going almost eight minutes overtime, won't you? The show starts with a “Live Event of the Week” as Phil regales Dean with tales of his 49th birthday celebrations on a day that involved marionettes, Norse mythology and the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. Then, for the first time in ages, Dean and Phil discuss what they're reading. After that, it's onto “Celebrity Deaths” which contains a correction of a correction from last week, as well as remembrances of a former teen idol, a jazz great, a country music great, a gospel great and two award-winning actors. Then, a few more thoughts about the latest news involving toxic masculinity, the United States Senate and “Whataboutism” before Dean and Phil roll up their sleeves to discuss almost a dozen movies, including both the 1974 and 2017 versions of Murder on the Orient Express, Orson Welles' 1952 Othello, Kelly Reichardt's Certain Women, and this year's award hopefuls Last Flag Flying, Call Me By Your Name,Lady Bird, Mudbound, Hostiles and The Disaster Artist.

This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're going to try and look past the usual suspects to get at some of the under reported stories in the news this week. Among them, we'll look at an official investigation into money laundering, and a key turn of phrase that's a giant step forward in dealing with out racist past. Speaking of racism, that's still a thing, and a couple of people in Canada are doing their best to bring it back, while some American states are trying to bring back their own dark past for women's rights. This Thursday, May 23, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Last Flag Flying. What's new with hate in Canada? Well, last week there was the case of a Nazi and Confederate flag flying high over a property in Kelliher, a small town in Saskatchewan, and while the flag flyer has been described as, basically, a harmless 34-year-old who "never grew up," it's the man who took down the flag and burned it that seems to be getting the brunt of the attention. We'll talk about that, and court case of Kevin J. Johnson as we look at recent news from the realm of right wing extremism. Dirty Laundering. British Columbia Premier John Horgan announced last week that his government is launching a public inquiry into money laundering. From luxury cars, to gambling, and especially real estate, B.C. is the money laundering capital of Canada, but this is a nation-wide issue to be sure, and one that impacts the lives of Canadians everyday from housing prices to fraudulent goods. But what will the public inquiry discover, and will it make any difference for the high cost of living? Pro-Life in Pieces. Several U.S. states have launched restrictive anti-abortion laws designed to force a court fight that will lead to the Supreme Court where it's hoped that the newly minted majority of conservative Justices will overturn the seminal court case of Roe V. Wade. Reaction in the U.S., and around the world, is concern. Here in Canada, all eyes are on openly pro-life politicians, and whether they might be encouraged to make the same moves in this country? How under threat is the right to an abortion? Bad Words. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg took a wild, unexpected step for Reconciliation with our Indigenous peoples by properly calling centuries of systemic mistreatment a genocide. Many advocates have been pushing for this, but it's been a hard sell because it means painting our ancestors as people who committed a genocide against a whole continent over hundreds of years. So will this be a positive step forward for Indigenous relations? Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

Hi everyone and welcome back! We have been on a little bit of a break the past week, but we return to you today with a vengeance! Ok well Matt returns with a vengeance, Mysterious Mike is M.I.A. after his recent nuptials. I am guessing he is doing this thing called a honeymoon? Single guys like Matt will never know what that is. Back on topic, today Matt talks about Last Flag Flying an Amazon Studio’s original starring Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, and Steve Carell. Last Flag Flying is a very serious film that discusses a difficult but important topic. It does get a little political here and there but how can you not when discussing the death of a young soldier? The acting is incredible, the sets are great, but the story is what really sets this one apart. It is nice having some well-timed and appropriate humor that helps with the very serious subject matter. Matt really enjoyed Last Flag Flying and gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Thank you liking, subscribing, and supporting our little pod. Matt will do his best to wrangle up Mysterious Mike for Thursday where we will be discussing a biopic that is taking the country by storm, Bohemian Rhapsody. Chat at you then! On this episode of "Andrew Watches Movies", Andrew revisits M Night Shayamalan's "The Village", finding it more accommodating than the first time. Andrew disagrees vehemently with critics about the remake of "Death Wish", and revisits a film that he himself didn't like in theaters "Last Flag Flying". Andrew and Jess watch the classic "It Happened One Night" which has a very limited run on Filmstruck, so get on with watching it. The Wheel led us to the weirdness of "Eraserhead". If you joined us on that journey, we hope you survived. Finally we explore another chapter of "The Cage Files" with Brian De Palma's "Snake Eyes".
