Who will represent South Los Angeles in the California State Assembly? That's a big question facing voters of the 57th Assembly District, which includes South Los Angeles, Southeast Los Angeles, West Adams, University Park, Florence, Watts, Downtown Los Angeles and Skid RowOne of the first candidates to jump into the race was Sade Elhewary, an educator, organizer and advocate who worked for years for the South LA based multiracial community organization, Community Coalition.Sade is a first time candidate, but has been endorsed by tons of political heavyweights, such as Mayor Karen Bass, Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Hilda Solis, Assemblyman Isaac Bryan, and Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson.I spoke to Sade at length shortly before Christmas. about her life and her agenda . Her website info is here; https://sadeforassembly.com/

The fire erupted after midnight under a Los Angeles freeway where 16 people were living, including a pregnant woman who was only weeks from giving birth. As the flames engulfed the storage yard and the inferno's heat melted some of the thoroughfare's steel guardrails and concrete pillars, rescue crews were able to get everyone out safely. But the disaster has brought renewed criticism of officials' inability to get homeless residents off the street, leaving tens of thousands living in perilous locations across the nation's second-largest city.Three years ago, as part of a court order related to a yearslong lawsuit accusing the city and county of Los Angeles of not doing enough to address homelessness, a judge wrote that he was concerned about 7,000 people living under freeways, calling it “unreasonably dangerous.” County supervisor Hilda Solis said officials have since set aside nearly $300 million to create 6,700 shelter beds, but rows of tents and makeshift shelters are still a common sight under overpasses and along highway ramps.Support the show

Former state senator Holly J. Mitchell was elected last year to a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing District 2 - the same district in which she was born and raised. Term limits have turned the traditional local-government-to-legislature pipeline on its head, as has the stratospheric growth of LA: as a Supervisor, Mitchell represents twice as many constituents as she once did in the senate. The LA Board of Supes - known for years as the "five little kings" - are "kings" no more. With Mitchell's election, the Board is, for the first time, made up entirely of women. Two of the other Supervisors, Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl, are, like Mitchell, former state legislators. The Supervisor joined us on this week's podcast to talk about her transition from the capitol to the county, her priorities as a local official, and the governor's drop-in at a 2nd District site to get his COVID vaccine at the beginning of the month. We also asked how her district - one of the hardest hit by COVID - has been dealing with the pandemic. And, finally, we asked the question on everyone's mind: Where in the heck is North Shoestring? Closing tune is "Dreamer" by Black Violin

That’s a phrase that has been banned by our current administration, so what does that mean to climate scientists and how does that action impact their teaching opportunities, research and the overall attitude of society towards the scientific community as a whole? These thoughts are why Ep. 29 - An Agent of Change’s guest is Kim Cobb, a climate scientist at Georgia Tech and director of the new Global Change program at the same organization.
