This week my guest is Jake Hanrahan, independent Journalist behind the war reporting platform Popular Front, who is launching a new documentary series called Away Days, covering underground countercultures around the world, from the inside. Jake is probably my most “non-noise” guest I've had on the podcast yet, but his understanding of true underground culture and unapologetic approach to media make this an essential episode for people involved in the noise and industrial community. For the last five years, Popular Front has been shaking up the way many of us view reporting from conflict zones. It gives its followers an up-close-and-personal view, going inside globally reported stories like Hong Kong's 2019 umbrella protests and narco-militias in Mexico, as well as lesser-known battlegrounds like the illicit 3D printing of firearms in Europe. Jake Hanrahan, its founder, came into journalism with no formal training during VICE's heyday, and quickly became a correspondent covering conflict in Kurdistan, Ukraine, and elsewhere. This week on Whale Hunting, Bradley Hope chats to Jake about his unconventional path into journalism, and what led him to set up a grassroots war reporting organization. They also discuss the delicate balancing act of gaining access to stories while remaining authentic, the challenges of making independent media on a shoestring, and why Jake doesn't care about scoops. Mentioned in this week's episode: Popular Front, a grassroots media organisation that focuses solely on war and conflict: https://www.popularfront.co/ Jake's newest documentary project, Away Days, which tells “hidden stories from the fringes of society”: https://www.awaydays.tv/ For more from Whale Hunting, make sure to follow the podcast – and subscribe to our newsletter at whalehunting.projectbrazen.com. In episode 229 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with conflict journalist, Andy Hayward. Andy currently works as a freelance journalist and has previously worked for VICE News in their international team producing news pieces and documentaries. Andy also previously worked on VICE's flagship, Emmy Award-winning show VICE News Tonight on HBO. We came across Andy through friend of the pod Jake Hanrahan who interviewed him on his podcast Popular Front about an upcoming documentary he has produced within Russia called ‘Warped by War: Inside Putin's Russia'. The film covers the suppression of the Russian regime of public dissent against the war in Ukraine, speaks to the family members of Russian soldiers who are currently serving and those who have been killed. In this episode we discuss the film in-depth through a mental health lens, his previous films he has done in Russia and Belarus and his wider journey in conflict journalism. For industry issues, we discuss work-life balance and the responsibility he feels as a journalist to capture the stories of those who speak out against the regime but not put their lives in danger. For Andy's mental health, we discuss the importance of having positive relationships in your life as a release valve from the day-to-day of conflict journalism, the stress and paranoia that come with working in a repressive country like Russia and how that bleeds out into his personal life. We finish by discussing his family's military background and how that's shaped his attitude towards mental health. As always, #itsokaytovent You can find links to watch all of Andy's films we discussed on the podcast in full below: 'Protesters in Belarus Are Being Jailed and Killed, But That Isn't Stopping Them': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSnZp7_TM28&pp=ygVSUHJvdGVzdGVycyBpbiBCZWxhcnVzIEFyZSBCZWluZyBKYWlsZWQgYW5kIEtpbGxlZCwgQnV0IFRoYXQgSXNuJ3QgU3RvcHBpbmcgVGhlbeKAmQ%3D%3D 'Nationalism or Nothing: Life in Modern Russia': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w56s1tTS9io&t=495s&ab_channel=VICENews You can follow Andy on social media below: Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndyJohnHayward Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mr_andy_hayward/ Support Us: Patreon: www.patreon.com/venthelpuk GoFundMe: www.gofundme.com/f/help-vent-supp…ir-mental-health Merchandise: www.redbubble.com/people/VentUK/shop Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk

On this week's episode I'm chatting with Popular Front's Jake Hanrahan. Jake's a journalist and documentary film maker, working mainly through his own ‘Popular Front' grassroots media channel. (Go and look them up on Youtube and Insta but make sure you type it in fully, cos they're always shadow-banned). I've done a load of audio work for Jake in the past, he's a top lad and properly gives a shit about what he does. He's a self-professed “little fashion boy on the sly” so I'm buzzing to ask him about his own garms, and the clothes he's encountered on his journalistic trips to conflict zones around the world. Popular Front's got a Patreon site where supporters support the work they do with monthly donations. We've got one for My Own Garms too, but nobody's been arsed with it so far. So if you want to donate the price of a bev or something then get over to Patreon.com/myowngarms and slip us a fiver. It'll help really help us make more episodes. Jake Hanrahan (founder of Popular Front) is a conflict journalist and documentary filmmaker who is a legitimately disrupter in alternative news media. His page, Popular Front, uses his roots as a former Vice reporter to give the world honest, unbiased gonzo journalism that has a lot of heart and a lot of perspectives you won't see anywhere else. We sit down with Jake for 2 hours (FULL INTERVIEW ON PATREON) to discuss the current conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, criticize more unruly war journalists, and of course, as always, to condemn violence. In this landmark two hundredth episode of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with conflict journalist and researcher Aram Shabanian. Aram is the Open-Source Information Gathering (OSIG) Manager at the New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy. In this episode we discuss his unconventional route into conflict journalism, after having to study at two different universities after dropping out from the first one after failing his exams in his second year. He then got an opportunity to appear on great friend of the pod Jake Hanrahan's Popular Front podcast in 2018 and Matthew Gault's podcast ‘War College' and used those opportunities to get into the Middlebury Institute of International Studies for his post-graduate degree. From there, he befriended a woman based in Iraq who brought him on board at the New Lines Institute where he got a foot in the door, before becoming a permanent member of staff through hard work and successfully predicting the Russia-Ukraine war. In this episode we chart that unconventional journey in conflict journalism, class and elitism in this field and the problematic industry belief that in order to cut your teeth as a researcher, you must view a lot of harrowing content which can traumatise early-stage researchers. We also discuss the latest situation in the war in Ukraine, the mutiny by the Putin-backed Wagner Group and the sexual abuse and war crimes being committed by Russian soldiers against Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) and the Ukrainian population. For Aram's mental health, we discuss his experience of depression, his diagnosis of ADHD, how medication has helped his mental health and the impact of the death of his mother which took place during a difficult time for his mental health already. We finish by discussing his experience at the Evergreen State College from 2014-2017 during the most tumultuous time in its history as it was taken over by a group of hard-left activist students. Since we last spoke, Jake has been busy covering more underreported conflicts across the globe, particularly in Ukraine in its war against Russia, French-controlled Corsica, the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the Karabakh region and the continued rise of illegal 3D printed guns across Europe. In this episode we do a deep dive on his latest film ‘Frontline Hooligan: Ukraine's Anti-Fascist Football Ultras Fighting Russian Invasion' which focuses on the Hoods Hoods Klan and the various characters within it that make the group unique. In the era of prohibition, Charlie Birger built a bootlegging and gambling empire in southern Illinois, otherwise known as little Cairo. He charmed women, passed out money to children and poor families, bought off all the police and politicians...and killed anyone who got in his way. But he wasn't the only building an army in 1920's rural Illinois. The second iteration of the Ku Klux Klan was on the rise and enacting their own version of vigilante justice, attacking bootleggers, immigrants, and anyone who didn't fit into their version of America. The Birger Gang wasn't having it. War was coming. Danny is joined by Jake Hanrahan of Popular Front.

Jake Hanrahan is a conflict journalist, documentary filmmaker and the founder of Popular Front. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going for a week but it's felt like a year. Social media, YouTube and news channels have been awash with stories from on the ground and even the Wikipedia page has had over 500 contributors and is more than 20,000 words long. I wanted to find out what life is actually like on the ground in Ukraine from someone who's been there. Expect to learn what protection the Ukrainian citizens have access to from bombings, where civilians are getting all their guns from, how you coordinate citizen-militias with zero military training, whether world champion boxers are are actually helping the effort, how skeptical Jake is of the press coverage, how many Russians actually want this war and much more... This weekend, a group of musicians gathered in O'Briens Irish pub in the Ukranian capital and belted out traditional Irish tunes as a distraction from the threat of war. In this episode we uncover the surprisingly rich common history shared by Ireland and Ukraine, as told by a woman living through the dramatic recent events that have drawn the world's attention to Kyiv as Russian troops advance. Joining us is listener Nadia Dobrianska, who works in a human rights organisation in her native Kyiv and happens to be an afficionado in Irish culture and history. She unveils a hidden world of historical commonalities between the two countries, who both began asserting their nationhood in the same era, suffered domination from neighbouring power, and still bear the deep scars of famine from that experience. Nadia also has a fascinating personal story to share. She experienced two revolutions in Kyiv before moving to Belfast in 2019 to pursue her love of Irish studies. There, she managed to pick up fluent Gaeilge through lessons on the Falls Road. Now back in Ukraine, those language skills have come in handy: with the world's attention turned onto her country due to fears of a Russian invasion, Nadia has begun reporting on the situation in Irish for a range of Irish-language media outlets. With her experience of living in Ireland, love for and deep knowledge of Irish culture and history, there's hardly a better person to explain the Ukranian perspective on the current situation and the country's unexpected but profound common heritage with Ireland. Jake Hanrahan talks profiling big business practices in Season 1 of “Megacorp,” the tech giant he has his eye on next, and why he's skeptical of digital assistants.
In the first Contours podcast of 2022, Nicholas Heras is joined by war reporter Jake Hanrahan to discuss the future of conflict and the breakdown of the post-World War II global system. Hanrahan is the founder of Popular Front, a disruptive media organization that seeks to provide nuanced, gritty, and deeply human reporting on under-covered conflicts in the world. Heras and Hanrahan engaged in a wide-ranging conversation on the current state of underreported conflicts around the globe, war reporting in the age of social media, growing authoritarianism in the West, and the future of the Western-led, rules-based international order.
I speak to Jake Hanrahan, journalist and documentary filmmaker, and creator of niche conflict reporting media base, POPULAR FRONT. We talk conflict reporting, how he grew into this form of journalism, his previous time with VICE, his thoughts on humanity, and more.
This week on the Tiger Bloc Podcast, we're excited to share with you our conversation with Jake Hanrahan, the journalist best know for his conflict journalist project, Popular Front. Popular Front reports on underreported conflicts from around the world. Jake has been all over, to places like Artsakh, Ukraine, and Rojava. We talked about what makes Popular Front unique — it's entirely listener funded. When examining global conflicts, one of the things that Jake shared with us was the democratization of anti-government techniques and strategies. From the use of commercial drones, to Internet forums to share strategies, and even 3D printing firearms from free plans online. Of course, many of our followers may know Jake from his documentary Plastic Defense, where he spoke to JStark, one of the designers behind the Fuck Gun Control 9 (FGC-9). The FGC-9 is a special gun, one that can be assembled with a 3D printer and a pipe using no actual firearm parts. In America, there's a tendency for legacy media and American residents to view foreign conflicts through an American lens. We talked about how legacy media not only ignores nuance, but so do Western leftists, disregarding nuance to fit preconceived ideological schema. We also wanted to talk to Jake about his new podcast, Megacorp. On the show, Jake explores and exposes the behavior or the world's most unethical corporations. And where better to start than Amazon. We talked with Jake about how Amazon has managed to amass the powers one would normally associate with a state — vast wealth and a lack of accountability to any laws excepts its own. All while Amazon abuses workers, some of whom have died in its warehouses. But how to stop it? Unionization would be the natural answer. But even though interest in unions is growing in the United States, the unionization rate overall remains low. And in the UK, the younger generation seems to have have lost interest. This all may seem like unrepentant doomerism, but as Jake said, “If Rome fell this shit can.” What do young people have to lose?

Guns. Guns. Guns. We Americans love them, don't we folks? But the culture is different in other parts of the world and people who want to build their own weapons, make their own Ammo, and fire down range with a sweet semi-automatic have to break the rules to do so. Thanks to 3D printing, that's getting a lot easier to do as groups like Deterrence Dispensed spread the good word—and the plans—of making guns at home. Is it for home defense? Is it all in good fun? Or is it part of a broader ideology? Here to help answer those questions is journalist, podcaster, and documentarian Jake Hanrahan. Deterrence Dispensed and 3D guns in Europe is the subject of Jake's latest Popular Front documentary Plastic Defence, which is on YouTube.Angry Planet has a substack! S1E14: In the season1 finale I speak with Jake Hanrahan of the grassroots conflict media platform Popular Front. We discuss his approach and methods as an independent journalist, important stories not covered by major media outlets, the importance of maintaining neutrality as a journalist and not pushing an agenda or narrative, social, cultural, and political events taking place in the U.K., U.S., Armenia, and Turkey. We also discuss the absence of real, meaningful resistance to new laws in the UK and the culture wars, an American original, affecting both countries. All this and much more. Thank you, Jake!
Is the FBI working with Satanic Neo-Nazis? Is the FBI targeting White only January 6th protestors? Something smells fishy in Washington D.C. and it's not just coming from AOC's office. In episode 169 of American Reveille, James Lane asks if the FBI, Satanic Neo-Nazis, Far-Left extremists (BLM, Antifa), and Democrats could be working together towards mutual goals? James then heads to Gab.com to expose real Neo-Nazis and Antisemitism. In the process, James Lane proves that Nazis absolutely hate Donald Trump and the MAGA movement for supporting Israel. Could Neo-Nazis actually be a FAR-LEFT extremist group? Boris, Fritz, and Rey wrap up their first arc of episodes and say, not a "goodbye", but a "see yinz later" to the Order of Nine Angles. Fritz gives some updates on this arc's siegepilled stars and Atomwaffen's great new way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Shit gets unreal as Rey recounts the recent inclusion of The Empire Never Ended into ONA canon as "antifascist bigots" and Boris joins him to poke fun at the Astral Bone Gnawer's turn at the ONA mic. Boris relates the obsessive need to obfuscate the 'true' identity of Anton Long (*coughDavidMyatt) to the epic Yugoslav partisan film Walter Defends Sarajevo. The boys laugh at the pathetic attempts of niners to deny the overwhelming presence of pedophilia in the O9A, giving them the chance to offend new countries with their accents. The crew then introduces the new Balkan turn of the coming arc, promising a rapid return to the occult soon. Finally, Fritz ropes Boris into some therapeutic roleplay in order to explain siegepillers and nazi satanists to children. Failing miserably and completely losing their minds, the crew immediately launches into an epic radio play entitled, "Das Ist Anton Long". See y'all in the Balkans! Jake Hanrahan (who founded Popular Front) has a book out now. You can buy it here: www.gargoylebook.com Gargoyle is a compilation of written work by British journalist Jake Hanrahan, collecting his on-the-ground reporting from all the wrong crowds. In this book he visits hidden places and speaks to tough people, from the militant hideouts in Kurdistan, to the secret safe-houses of dark web drug dealers. Hanrahan has a particular knack for discovering, and gaining access to, the dark underbellies of the modern era. Gargoyle is his first-hand documentation of these dangerous and often bizarre journeys.

Jake Hanrahan talked to me about conflict reporting. He goes to war zones and tries to bring back word of what's actually going on in these areas. It's crazy. He brings back tons of footage. Look at PopularFront.co and you'll see what I'm talking about. He's not even welcome in a lot of these places. Once they put him in a Turkish prison! Really interesting stuff in this one. You gotta excuse the sound a little. I recorded in the wrong button on my audio recorder so I had to end up using the laptop mic and it's not as good as the regular Sennheiser mic. You'll get used to it but the first 2 minutes you're gonna get annoyed. I'm telling you, this one is worth the trouble. Jake Hanrahan has some crazy stories! Go support Jake in his quest to bring the truth about wars. Become patron. You can do $1, $5, 0r $10 and no matter what you're going to be helping a real independent guy do his thing. There are risk takers, and then there's Jake Hanrahan. He immerses himself in the most dangerous corners of the world as the founder of Popular Front - an independent, member funded conflict journalism collective. In this episode, Jake shares his extensive experience covering irregular warfare. We discuss hard hitting topics including: the dangers and strengths of tribes and religions, tactics guerrilla fighters have to fight off superior forces, gun ownership in Europe, the true causes of school shootings, how the demise of families and society lead to violence, and the fallout of technology and "cancel culture".
Everybody is just going like, Hang on, I'm sick of this. I'm sick of being told what to think. I'm sick of having a fucking political spin on everything."— Jake Hanrahan- - - - -The internet has transformed traditional media with newsgroups becoming reliant on advertising as readers are reluctant to pay for news online. The advertising model has led to the rise of clickbait news organisations such as Buzzfeed, with content and headlines designed for sharing and reach. Some argue that this has led to an increase in fake news, something Andreas M. Antonopoulos explained in his talk Fake News, Fake Money talk. The algorithms used by social media companies are also under scrutiny, with people questioning how much power do platforms such as Facebook have in shaping opinion? Can these algorithms drive a specific political agenda? Can a malicious actor weaponise these platforms and create and target news to manipulate opinion?A perfect storm of bloated unprofitable news organisations and an increase in distrust of mainstream news is leading to a rise in independent journalism. In Episode 105 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Jake Hanrahan about the crisis unfolding in the border region between Syria and Turkey following the US withdrawal of forces from northern Syria. This withdrawal precipitated the subsequent assault by Turkish Armed Forces on the Kurdish YPG-controlled region of Rojava. Jake Hanrahan is an independent journalist and documentary filmmaker based in the UK. He has reported from Syria, Iraq, southeast Turkey, and other conflict zones for HBO, Vice News, PBS Newshour, and BBC News, to name a few. Turkish President Erdogan, after obtaining the consent of President Trump, began his invasion into the Kurdish YPG controlled region of Syria known as Rojava this past Wednesday. During Sunday’s “Face the Nation,” Secretary of Defense Mark Esper confirmed to Margaret Brennan that roughly 1,000 U.S. troops would be evacuated from northern Syria following Trump’s troop withdrawal announcement. There are also multiple reports of ISIS families and fighters previously captured and held by Kurdish forces starting to escape after Tukey’s bombardments. Also, Lebanese broadcaster al-Mayadeen reported Sunday that the Syrian army would enter Manbij and Kobani in the next 48 hours, based on an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (the latter, according to Mohammed Shaheen, the deputy chairman of Euphrates region told North-Press). It seems that what we are seeing transpire in the Middle East is the disintegration of artificially constructed national borders around sectarian lines. The forces being unleashed have thus far remain contained within the Greater Middle East, but Turkey’s involvement creates the further potential for spillover into the Balkans and southern Europe at some indeterminate future date. Additionally, Turkey has been flexing its geopolitical muscles where Greece is concerned in recent years, and it is no longer inconceivable to imagine that its troubled relationship to the EU and its membership in NATO will prove insufficient as deterrents for curbing Turkish military aggression or the expansionary ideas of Erdoğan in the Aegean. This conversation is meant to help Hidden Forces listeners develop some context for what has transpired over the past week, the significance of Trump’s decision, and the implications moving forward.
