An early passion for the high street meant Julian Metcalfe was determined to get into retail from the get-go. He and his partner Sinclair Beecham founded Pret A Manger when he was just 26. In 2008 Pret was sold to a private equity firm, and Julian no longer had a say in the company's future. Now Julian is in charge of Itsu, an Asian-inspired fast-food chain. A&W fast-food restaurants in Canada will start serving Pret A Manger-branded products this fall, under a just-announced 10-year collaboration deal. A cross-selling situation like that might have been inconceivable 20 years ago, as this week's episode of Restaurant Rewind reports. But, as the podcast installment explains, the lines of competition have been blurring for some time as restaurant licensing expands beyond consumer packaged goods to ready-to-eat fare prominently featured on another concept's menu. Cinnabon-branded products, for instance, are available at chains ranging from Wendy's to Subway to The Cheesecake Factory. Tune into this week's episode for a look at why and how chains are increasingly relying on the drawing power of other chains' products to increase their own allure.

When Julian Metcalfe helped launch the sandwich and coffee-chain Pret A Manger in 1986, interest rates were in the double digits and staffing was difficult, in part because full freedom of movement within the European Union was still a few years away. These days, the UK is out of the EU, the interest rate is 5%—though the Bank of England is expected to raise it. “Everyone's complaining about 5% and it's the end of the world,” Metcalfe says. “Back then I remember we paid 14%.”In this week's In the City, Metcalfe tells hosts David Merritt and Francine Lacqua that the restaurant business is “incredibly difficult,” but that when you're determined, you can make it happen. He says his current mission is to make Itsu, a fast-food chain he founded in 1997, a destination for speedy, healthy meals at low prices. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's show is with Elizabeth Lovius. Elizabeth Lovius is a Feminine Leadership Mentor who helps women make space for their own healing, wholeness and empowerment. For over 30 years she has worked as a Changemaker, Leadership Coach, Mentor and Social Entrepreneur specialising in giving leaders – especially women – the headspace to let their wisdom lead. She is an international speaker, author and award winning trainer and facilitator. And a poet. When leaders think and feel better, they do better and lead better. Working with Elizabeth, in addition to many years of corporate experience, you get a real human being; a warm connection and a lightness of heart. It is in this space of relaxation, enjoyment and ease – where the magic really happens and women discover what they have been looking for has been there all along - they discover who they truly are at Core. Elizabeth is the Founder of Kindred Spirit Consultancy one of the first 100 Bcorps in the UK where the focus is on business as a force for good – ensuring that business balances the need to create profit with caring for the Planet and the People. Clients include: IBM, itsu, ITV, Pret A Manger, Cook, M&S, Sky, Samsung, and Very. Elizabeth has over 25 years of experience in all sectors (extensive experience in the Hospitality, Food, Media and Retail Sectors), worked with over 100 organisations on their culture, trained, coached and mentored over 10,000 individuals, and has specialised in the unique challenges and opportunities that leaders, especially women leaders face. In this show, Lian and Elizabeth explored the missing archetype in our culture: the Wise Woman, why she's so needed - now more than ever, and how women post-menopause can bring her back into our bodies, lives, families, and communities. What does a pivot to performance-oriented L&D look like in a fast-paced high street environment? In this episode, Lila Warren, Global Head of Retail Academy at Pret a Manger, shares her motivations and approaches to affecting performance with learning solutions designed to make a meaningful impact. KEY TAKEAWAYS  L&D should be seen as the experts, somewhere people automatically turn to solve problems. Be relentless about understanding the problem you are solving. If people have not actually used what you taught them 9 months before they have probably forgotten it. Learning needs to be delivered at the point of need. Often, on the job itself. Identify who is going to support the learner when they are doing their job, they will be the ones who can see if the training works.  L&D needs to step into the world of those they are seeking to influence rather than expecting people to step into the world of learning. Training does not have to be a course; it could be a list of resources or a simple memo or short video to remind people of how to deal with an issue or do something.  There is a lot more to development than learning. To solve the problem, you need to collaborate with other departments. BEST MOMENTS'The point of need is extremely important.''The intervention on the reinforcement of learning isn't necessarily with the training department. ''It's you going forward and say, I've noticed that we have a problem with that. And I think we can help.''The trick is to be completely consistent with your approach.' It seems everyone's talking about resilience, the ability to bounce back from misfortune or adversity. But as Bruce Daisley explains to host Katie Macaulay, there's something wrong with what he calls the ‘resilience orthodoxy', the idea that it's not really what happens to you that matters, but your attitude to what's happened. In this, his second appearance on the Internal Comms Podcast (his first was in season 1, episode 8), Bruce tells us why. He discusses the US military's billion-dollar resilience workshops, the link between high-performance athletes and childhood trauma and the value of collective strength. Katie and Bruce also discuss meeting-free days, boring presentations, why ‘semi-detached' hybrid working is more like college than school and the thinking behind freebies at Pret A Manger. Bruce also shares some thoughts on his ex-employer Twitter (‘a pretty miserable place to be right now') and on moderation of social media platforms in general. As always, share your thoughts of this or any other episode of the Internal Comms Podcast using the hashtag #TheICPodcast. Thanks for listening.

“From a very young age, I wanted to be a lawyer,” says Paula Chin. “But I completely flunked my A-levels.” So, she followed her heart and did French at university, which eventually led to her first job in packaging. Her advice to anyone who is not sure exactly which career path to follow? “Just do the subjects that you love.” It appears to be sound advice, as Paula's career has seen her work for Sainsbury's, M&S, Pret A Manger, and now the World Wildlife Fund. She has worked in packaging for years and her current job title at WWF is Senior Policy Advisor on Consumption. Paula's expertise in food packaging has proved invaluable in her current role, which involves researching, collecting evidence, and putting forward arguments to persuade authorities to design policies to the benefit of the natural environment. “There's always reading to be done,” she tells Elisa Roche in this episode of the Career Conversations podcast series. “You have to keep abreast of studies, reports and information that is coming out from across the world.” She says she maintains close links with former colleagues in the food industry, which helps her understand how they are thinking and feeling about specific issues, and then she works with them to perhaps persuade them towards a different view, if needed. Paula says her interest in sustainability really kicked in when she worked at Sainsbury's: “It was instrumental in shaping my thoughts about sustainability and presented me with the opportunity to work on projects that were sustainability-related.” Now she works for an organisation that has offices all around the world. That can present challenges, but Paula says there is something special about working for a non-governmental organisation. “My experience of WWF is that it doesn't matter where you sit in the world, you instantly have this connection and ultimately you're working towards the same purpose, which is fighting for people and nature and ensuring that we achieve the most positive outcomes for the planet and communities throughout the world.” Listen to the full episode to find out what a typical day is like for Paula, how to get into a career like hers, and what you can expect to earn. Paula Chin, Senior Policy Adviser on Consumption, WWF-UK Following 20 years in industry, primarily in packaging-related roles at Proctor & Gamble, M&S, Sainsbury's and Pret, Paula joined WWF in 2019 to work on the packaging element of the Tesco partnership. Additionally, she provides internal and external technical expertise on materials-related issues including plastics, with her policy and advocacy work focusing more broadly on resources, waste and circular economy thinking. Most recently, she played a leading role in influencing Government to adopt Greener UK's priority amendment for the Resource and Waste chapter of the Environment Act and co-authored a chapter on Waste Prevention and Waste Management for a UNEP Finance Initiative Sustainable Blue Economy guide. As well as being invited regularly to speak at events, she is the current Chair of the Wildlife and Countryside Link's Resources and Waste Working Group, an advisor on UKRI's Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Fund and sits on several government and industry stakeholder advisory groups addressing this broad topic.

Create a Better Work Environment as an Authentic Leader with Clare Clough It's International Women's Day! What better way to commemorate this day than by celebrating our true and authentic selves? As leaders, it can be challenging to be completely authentic in the workplace — that applies for all of us, not just women. We fear that revealing too much of ourselves might invalidate us. However, showing your authenticity and vulnerability can be good for others and your business! So how exactly can we be a more authentic leader?  In this episode, Clare Clough joins us to talk about improving your work environment by bringing your authentic self. We discuss how you can look after yourself and others. Clare also shares the lessons that made her a stronger leader and her absolute secret to success. If you want to learn more about the key to creating better work environments, then tune in to this episode. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how being an authentic leader can improve your work environment and grow your business.  Learn how to maintain energy and resilience for yourself and others. Find out Clare's absolute secret to success.  Resources Visit Pret A Manger's website for freshly prepared food and organic coffee! Second, she's proud of being appointed UK Managing Director at Pret A Manger despite not coming from an operations background. Lastly, Clare is proud that their business could bounce back from the pandemic's challenges.  [13:41] How to Be an Authentic Leader Listen to your co-workers. The only way to learn about people is to listen. Create an environment where people are comfortable with being authentic and vulnerable. Connect and empathise with people to be a more effective leader. [19:03] Maintaining Energy for Yourself and Others Your reserves of resilience can only take you so far. Find that balance of conserving energy and putting it in the right places. Looking after yourself enables you to look after others.  Be thoughtful and sensitive to what people need, but also recognise when to apply pressure or expectations. Cultivate a culture of openness in your work environment to allow positive peer-to-peer support. [24:25] Being a Stronger Leader and a Better Human For Clare, being in a job that she loves allows her to perform well. She enjoys the job she's currently in before thinking about the next opportunity. Ask for feedback and learn from mistakes.  Do not wallow on your mistakes: this can be counterproductive and detrimental to your well-being.  Conversely, accept that mistakes are going to happen to make it easier to bounce back from them.  When faced with adversity, finding a way to go forward is the best thing you can do.
