On episode 102 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by Charlamagne Tha God, host of The Breakfast Club, to talk about the controversy NLP stirred up with our “anti-intellectualism” episode last week. Our hosts also cover Trump’s grifting, a call for a general strike, and an update on threats to the Voting Rights Act. Trump is seeking $230M in damages from his own Justice Department for investigations into him, the 2016 Russia-election-interference investigation and the investigation into his handling of classified documents. Is it likely that he’ll actually get this money? The mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, has called for a general strike to push back against the actions of the Trump administration. He is the highest ranking public official to do so. We’ll hear his call to action and ask: what does it realistically look like for us to withhold our labor en masse? Are we ready for that?? Charlamagne Tha God has some criticism for our NLP hosts regarding the segment we did on Marc Lamont Hill, Queenzflip, and the Joe Budden Podcast last week. Charlamagne’s criticism mirrors many of the comments we’ve received. Our hosts respond to the critiques! A quick explainer on the threats to the Voting Rights Act, please check out the special episode we did last week… If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod. Today's Headlines: Donald Trump has apparently been demanding $230 million from the Justice Department since 2023—yes, taxpayer money—to “compensate” him for federal investigations into his conduct, including the Russia probe. He filed formal claims alleging his rights were violated, because of course he did. Meanwhile, his much-hyped meeting with Vladimir Putin is officially off, after both sides admitted the gap between Russia and Ukraine is too wide to bridge. In other Trump-adjacent chaos, a pardoned January 6th rioter was arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries after texting about his plans. Luckily, the person he texted tipped off the police. Elsewhere, ICE's weapons budget has exploded—up 700% from last year, now topping $70 million on guns, armor, chemical weapons, and even guided missile parts. Because nothing says “immigration enforcement” like missile warheads. Over at the Pentagon, War Secretary Pete Hegseth just issued a new rule requiring staff to get his approval before talking to Congress—an unprecedented move critics say is meant to muzzle oversight.  The FTC quietly scrubbed blog posts about AI from its website—pieces written by former chair Lina Khan that warned about consumer risks and praised open-source models. No explanation given. And finally, in the week's least expected crossover, Travis Kelce is teaming up with a hedge fund to take over Six Flags, buying a 9% stake worth around $200 million. The self-proclaimed theme park superfan sent shares soaring 18%. Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: NYT: Trump Said to Demand Justice Dept. CannCon and Ashe in America return to Badlands Daily with a packed rundown of breaking stories, political absurdities, and sharp analysis you won't hear anywhere else. They open with John Brennan's criminal referral for lying to Congress, linking it back to Russiagate, Comey, and the long trail of deep-state deception. From there, they break down President Trump's unprecedented $230 million claim against the DOJ for wrongful investigations, framing it as another major step in the broader justice narrative. Ashe brings in insight on Tulsi Gabbard's Weaponization Working Group and the growing accountability movement, while CannCon dissects the arrest of a State Department advisor accused of hoarding classified documents. The pair also tackle DHS's new $10 billion self-deportation initiative, migrant gang threats, and Argentina's $20 billion stabilization deal, complete with a deep dive into the American beef industry. Wrapping up with Virginia's “ballot hole” controversy, Trump's Putin summit rumors, and a dose of Badlands humor, this episode captures the perfect blend of wit, news, and no-nonsense commentary.

This Day in Legal History: US Naval Blockade of CubaOn October 22, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered a televised address announcing that the United States would impose a naval “quarantine” on Cuba. This action followed the discovery of Soviet nuclear missile installations on the island, just 90 miles from U.S. shores. The announcement marked the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a 13-day standoff that brought the world closer to nuclear war than ever before. In his address, Kennedy framed the deployment of Soviet missiles in Cuba as a direct threat to American national security and international peace. He warned that any nuclear missile launched from Cuba would be considered an attack by the Soviet Union, prompting a full retaliatory response. The legal foundation for the blockade, while not formally declared an act of war, was justified under the collective security framework of the Organization of American States (OAS). The U.S. sought and received OAS backing to frame the blockade as a multilateral action rather than a unilateral act of aggression. Over the next six days, the world watched as U.S. Navy ships encircled the island, intercepting Soviet vessels bound for Cuba. Behind the scenes, intense diplomatic negotiations unfolded between the White House and the Kremlin.Ultimately, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to dismantle the missile sites in exchange for a U.S. public pledge not to invade Cuba and a secret agreement to remove American missiles from Turkey. The crisis ended without military conflict, but it exposed the fragility of Cold War-era deterrence. The blockade, while effective, raised unresolved legal questions about executive war powers, international law, and the role of regional organizations in legitimizing force. It also led directly to the establishment of the “hotline” between Washington and Moscow and spurred negotiations for the 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.President Donald Trump responded to reports that he is seeking $230 million from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for legal costs tied to federal investigations, stating he is not personally involved in the request but would donate any awarded money to charity. The New York Times reported that Trump is pursuing compensation, alleging the investigations against him were politically motivated. Trump claimed he has not been in direct contact with his lawyers about the matter but believes the DOJ owes him for what he called unfair treatment related to election interference investigations.Trump has filed two administrative claims—typically a precursor to a lawsuit. One challenges the FBI and special counsel's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The other concerns the FBI's 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago residence, during which classified documents were seized, and accuses the DOJ of malicious prosecution and privacy violations. The filings mark a notable reversal, as Trump now leads the federal government that previously investigated him. A DOJ spokesperson stated that any potential conflicts in reviewing the claims would be handled according to ethics guidance from career officials.Trump says Justice Department owes him money, vows to donate any payout to charity | ReutersThe state of Arizona has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. House of Representatives over the delay in swearing in Democrat Adelita Grijalva, who won a special election to replace her late father, Representative Raul Grijalva. Although Speaker Mike Johnson has said she will be sworn in when the House reconvenes, he has not called lawmakers back to Washington, citing the ongoing government shutdown and the Senate's failure to pass a resolution.Arizona Attorney General Kristin Mayes argues in the suit that the delay violates the Constitution by preventing a duly elected representative, who meets all legal qualifications, from assuming office. The state is asking a judge to recognize Grijalva as a House member upon taking the oath, even allowing someone other than Johnson to administer it if necessary.Speaker Johnson dismissed the lawsuit as “absurd,” insisting the House controls its own procedures and accusing Mayes of seeking publicity. With three vacancies, the current House makeup is 219 Republicans to 213 Democrats. Once sworn in, Grijalva would slightly narrow that margin to 219-214.Arizona contends the delay is politically motivated, aimed at stopping Grijalva from supporting a petition that would force a vote on a bill requiring the release of all unclassified documents related to Jeffrey Epstein from the Trump administration. Grijalva herself has accused Johnson of silencing her district to protect political allies and obstruct justice for Epstein survivors.Arizona sues US House over delay in swearing in Democrat Grijalva | ReutersApple has asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to overturn a lower court ruling that restricts its ability to collect commissions on certain app purchases. The request follows a contempt finding by District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who ruled in April that Apple had violated her previous 2021 order by continuing to impose indirect restrictions on alternative payment systems for app developers. That earlier order came out of a lawsuit filed by Fortnite creator Epic Games, which sought to loosen Apple's control over in-app transactions. In the appeals hearing, Apple's attorney argued that the district judge went too far by expanding the original injunction, and insisted that Apple deserves to be compensated for developers' access to its ecosystem. Apple claims it followed the original court order but maintains it has a right to impose a fair commission, including on external purchases. After Apple removed prior restrictions, it introduced a new 27% fee on purchases made outside its App Store if the user clicked a link within the app—prompting Epic to argue that Apple is still undermining the court's intent.Judge Smith of the appellate panel expressed concern about the potential financial impact of the new injunction, suggesting the stakes run into billions of dollars. Epic's attorney countered that Apple shouldn't get another chance to justify its commission practices after allegedly misleading the lower court. The district judge also referred Apple and an executive to federal prosecutors for a potential criminal contempt investigation.A decision from the appeals court is expected in the coming months, and the case could reach the U.S. Supreme Court if further appealed.Apple asks US appeals court to lift app store restrictions in Epic Games case | ReutersSEC Chairman Paul Atkins is advancing a fast-track strategy to implement deregulatory changes without going through the full rulemaking process, which often takes a year or more and is vulnerable to legal challenges. Appointed under President Trump, Atkins is using policy statements, guidance memos, and interpretations of existing law to relax corporate disclosure rules, restrict shareholder proposals, and expand companies' ability to divert investor fraud claims into mandatory arbitration. For instance, the SEC recently issued guidance allowing companies to include arbitration clauses in their filings—avoiding formal rulemaking while significantly altering investor rights. Similarly, Atkins has encouraged companies to reject environmental and social shareholder proposals under Delaware law, without a formal vote by SEC commissioners. Critics, including Democratic Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, argue this approach sidesteps transparency and due process. While Atkins plans to propose new rules on shareholder resolutions and corporate disclosures by April 2026, current changes are being made through interpretations and enforcement discretion. This comes amid a government shutdown that has furloughed most of the SEC's staff, further limiting the agency's capacity to pursue traditional rulemaking.Atkins has also voiced support for eliminating quarterly reporting and scaling back executive compensation disclosures. However, even if rules are adopted, their durability is uncertain. Previous SEC rules—such as Biden-era climate disclosures and Gensler-era hedge fund regulations—have faced legal reversals. Experts note that rules with bipartisan support and grounded in market efficiency are more likely to survive than politically motivated ones.SEC Chief Fast Tracks Agenda, Averting Slog Through Rule Changes This is a public episode. Ghadi, whose Instagram account with over 400,000 followers was recently suspended by Meta, returns to the show to share firsthand reporting from the frontlines of South Lebanon.Despite a so-called ceasefire, Israel continues daily attacks—bombing civilians, kidnapping fishermen and shepherds, expanding military positions on Lebanese soil, and flying drones over villages. Meanwhile, the U.S.-backed Lebanese government is pressuring Hezbollah to surrender its weapons without any guarantee that Israel won't invade again.Ghadi explains why Hezbollah cannot and will not disarm while Israeli forces still occupy Lebanese land. She details the horrific aftermath of Israel's pager and walkie-talkie attacks that blinded and maimed thousands, including children. EU Sanctions Nayara Refinery, Rosneft Hits Back The European Union has sanctioned Nayara Energy's refinery in Vadinar, Gujarat, drawing sharp condemnation from Rosneft, which owns a 49% stake. Rosneft called the move “unjustified and illegal,” warning it could undermine India's energy security and hurt the economy. It emphasized that Nayara is a locally governed and taxed Indian entity, with profits reinvested in the country. India's Ministry of External Affairs responded firmly: “We do not recognize unilateral sanctions. There should be no double standards, especially in energy trade,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The EU also slashed the Russian oil price cap to $47.6/barrel and clamped down on “shadow fleet” ships—efforts to reduce Moscow's wartime revenue. Iran-EU Nuclear Talks Back On In a diplomatic shift, Iran has agreed to restart nuclear talks with the UK, France, and Germany—collectively known as the E3. Deputy foreign ministers will meet Friday, separate from any talks with the US. These nations were part of the original 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), which the US exited in 2018. Talks have remained frozen since an Israeli airstrike in June disrupted a round of Oman-mediated negotiations. Iran is demanding security guarantees after joint US-Israel strikes targeted its nuclear infrastructure. While expectations are low, any movement is seen as a sign of thaw in an otherwise tense region. Honda Hits the Brakes on ABS Deadline With a January 2026 deadline approaching for mandatory ABS (anti-lock braking systems) on all two-wheelers, Honda Motorcycles has joined Hero MotoCorp in raising red flags. “Cost is one issue. But the real concern is supply chain readiness,” said Yogesh Mathur of Honda. Currently, only bikes above 125cc require ABS. The new norms would impact 84% of the two-wheeler market, adding ₹3,000–₹5,000 per unit in cost. 70% of key ABS parts—like ECUs and sensors—are still imported, mostly from China and ASEAN nations. Industry body SIAM has asked the government to push the deadline, but the Ministry remains firm, citing India's high road fatality rate. Analysts say the domestic ABS market could grow 5X to ₹80,000 crore, though full localization may take up to 18 months. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Biden's Gaza Pier Scandal Much Worse Than Reported – A Pentagon IG report reveals 62 U.S. troops were injured and one killed in Biden's failed Gaza pier mission, far more than the three injuries publicly disclosed. What if your biggest business breakthrough came from a completely different industry? In this episode, Dr. Hesham Baky shares how he transitioned from scaling a multi-location dental empire to building a $230M real estate portfolio focused on high-growth medical retail spaces what he calls "Medtail." Discover the game-changing strategy he used to identify prime locations before they boom, leverage real estate for massive returns, and create a fund that attracts both medical professionals and high-net-worth investors. 5 Key Takeaways from the Episode with Dr. Hesham BakyThe Power of Owning the Real Estate Behind Your Business Dr. Baky learned from a mentor that owning the real estate where your business operates provides long-term financial stability. This insight led him to acquire properties alongside his dental practices, ultimately fueling his expansion into commercial real estate.Medtail: The Future of Medical Real Estate Investment The shift of medical services into retail spaces—dubbed "Medtail"—is a high-growth trend. By placing medical offices in high-traffic retail locations, Dr. Baky has been able to create more patient-friendly experiences while capitalizing on the value of mixed-use developments.Using Heat Mapping to Predict Real Estate Growth Instead of relying solely on census data, Dr. Baky and his team developed a proprietary heat-mapping system based on future housing permits. This allowed them to identify high-growth areas before they developed, securing prime real estate at a fraction of its future value. The Benefits of a Fund Structure for Scaling Investments While initially focused on personal real estate investments, Dr. Baky realized the power of pooling investor capital. His Blue Ridge Capital Fund allows doctors and high-net-worth individuals to participate in lucrative real estate opportunities while benefiting from his expertise.Trend-Based Investing vs. Asset-Based Investing Dr. Baky's success stems from spotting emerging trends rather than being tied to a single asset class. From identifying Medtail as a rising investment opportunity to capitalizing on distressed retail centers during COVID, his ability to recognize market shifts has led to significant wealth creation.About Tim MaiTim Mai is a real estate investor, fund manager, mentor, and founder of HERO Mastermind for REI coaches. He has helped many real estate investors and coaches become millionaires.
