Episode 371 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Melissa Withers, Managing Partner & Co-Founder of RevUp Capital. As an entrepreneur, are you thinking about your capital stack? Meaning, how are you going about funding your company? There are lots of options… you could bootstrap, raise money from friends & family, grants, and of course, raise venture capital which is the most discussed option in the media and blog posts. But, one vehicle that I don't think is talked about enough is Revenue Based Financing which is a non-dilutive form of financing where repayments are tied to a percentage of the company's revenue. In this interview with Melissa, we get into lots of details about what why this is a compelling option for entrepreneurs as RevUp is focused on this category as a non-equity investment fund for B2B and B2C companies ascending the $1M-$10M growth curve. In this episode of our podcast, we cover lots of great topics: * Melissa's background and the story of her journey to becoming an investor. * All the details about RevUp and how their model works. * The importance of storytelling when pitching your startup to investors. * KPI's and figuring out your company's God Metric. * The importance of mental health and balance for entrepreneurs. * And so much more

This week on the Expert Voices podcast, Randy Wootton, CEO of Maxio, speaks with Nathan Latka, CEO of Founderpath. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, data-driven approach, and thought-provoking insights, Nathan shares his three-phase entrepreneurial journey, starting with his initial foray into the booming social media world and progressing into the creation of the Latka Agency, and then Founderpath. Randy and Nathan discuss the changing landscape of the startup market, the importance of media-led growth, and the role of debt financing in funding software companies. Nathan shares insights from his extensive experience interviewing SaaS CEOs and highlights the need for founders to have a clear vision, build their tribe, and understand the value of inorganic growth. Quotes“You cannot buy attention anymore. Doesn't matter how much money you have. If you are a bootstrapped founder competing against a VC-backed competitor, and they're trying to buy attention, but you're more creative and you have figured out to get the attention of your customers in a creative way, you will win long term.” -Nathan Latka [11:35]“I think there are two kinds of founders. There are founders that sort of read and are consumers of intellect all day long and they're terrible at taking action. I would much rather go for the founder that takes action quickly and learns from a person versus the one that just reads all day.” -Nathan Latka [28:50]Expert Takeaways Successful entrepreneurs often have a deep grasp of industry pain points and innovate based on their experiences, leading to founder-market fit.Debt financing can be a strategic alternative to VC funding for SaaS startups, offering non-dilutive capital that aligns with an entrepreneur's vision for growth. In the current digital landscape, companies must earn attention through creativity and engaging content, rather than solely relying on paid advertising.Savvy founders are turning to inorganic growth and financial engineering, including M&A activities, to scale their businesses and achieve arbitrage opportunities. The role of the CFO in a SaaS company has evolved from purely managing finances to being strategically involved in driving growth and operational efficiency.Timestamps(02:20) Aspiring for Financial Freedom Through Entrepreneurship(06:41) Podcasting as a Long-Term Investment in SaaS Marketing(10:06) Venture Debt and Revenue-Based Financing in Software Deals(15:44) Evolving Strategies for Startup Success and Market Attention(24:09) Distinguishing Founder and CEO Roles in Company Growth(30:42) VC Involvement and Board Dynamics in Startups(38:42) Transitioning CFO Roles and Optimal Hiring Timelines(43:13) Insights on Influencers and Intelligent Investment AnalysisLinksMaxioUpcoming EventsMaxio Institute ReportRandy Wootton LinkedIn

Neil Johnson explains how this model of revenue-based financing works. In this episode of the SaaS Revolution Show our host Alex Theuma is joined by Jean-Laurent Pelissier, Managing Director; Head of Enterprise Software EMEA at HSBC Innovation Banking, who shares the different sources of financing in the current fundraising environment. "But the whole team basically stayed together. I think if we look at the SVB UK company that was acquired by HSBC, we've had very little employee churn overall, which is fantastic. And I do think that's a testament to the leadership, the ability to retain the employees and also the customer base. I think HSBC was able to bring stability to our customers in a very short order, which was fantastic. And that was kind of the number one priority there." Jean-Laurent shares:

Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Justin: I believe my superpower is kind of rooted in authenticity. My friends get the same Justin as my colleagues, as the entrepreneurs that I work with. I wear my heart on my sleeve.“Wefunder kind of coined this term ‘community round,'” explains Justin Renfro, the director of revenue-based financing at the popular investment crowdfunding portal.“We want to simplify the fundraising process by orchestrating all the legal, all the compliance, all of the operations around fundraising and allow founders to fundraise from a broader group of people,” he says. One key to that objective is a new emphasis on revenue-based financing, which is especially relevant for smaller, impact-focused businesses. Justin explains:Revenue-based financing is a new financial instrument for founders to be able to raise capital. The way it works is they offer a multiple to investors; for simplicity's sake, let's say a 2X multiple. So investors are going to put in a thousand and get $2,000. The way in which an investor realizes that multiple is through small quarterly payments of a percentage of revenues. Again, for simplicity purposes, let's say 5 percent of revenues. So, an entrepreneur pays 5 percent of their quarterly revenues until investors have realized a stated multiple of two X.In this framework, it's very friendly because it's not a fixed payment every month. It's based on the progress of the business. If the business is going well, investors get paid back faster. [If] the business goes slower, investors get paid back slower. The advantages of this structure go beyond being easy to understand. A debt structure's legal and tax burden tends to be simpler than for an equity round of financing.Justin's time at Kiva informs his work at Wefunder. He remains focused on social impact. He says his authenticity, his pattern of wearing his heart on his sleeve, is his superpower.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe hosts the Superpowers for Good Show, and his guest is Justin Renfrow from Wefunder, a crowdfunding platform.* Wefunder is focused on helping impact companies raise funds through innovative financing structures.* The community round, a term coined by Wefunder, allows startups to raise funds from a larger group of people, simplifying the fundraising process.* Wefunder encourages the use of revenue-based financing as a new financial instrument for founders to raise capital.* Revenue-based financing offers flexibility and a variable payment based on the progress of the business, shifting the focus from equity and future exit events.* Wefunder also simplifies the legal and compliance aspects of fundraising, allowing entrepreneurs to focus on growing their businesses.* Debt deals on Wefunder are attractive for impact companies as they do not require revenue or profitability and have tax simplicity.* Investing on Wefunder allows smaller investments and a diverse portfolio of impact startups for individuals who cannot afford large angel investments.* Justin's experience at Kiva, particularly working with microloans in the US, influenced his passion for supporting entrepreneurs.* His superpower is authenticity, showing genuine interest in others and building personal connections, which has positively impacted his personal and professional relationships. How to Develop Authenticity As a SuperpowerJustin shared the story of how he used his authenticity superpower:Wefunder has a really cool policy that every three years, we get a three-month sabbatical—my sabbatical hit about a year ago. I decided to go out into the desert alone for almost three full months. And I just wrote, wrote and wrote. I wanted to write a book. I didn't know what the book was going to be about. And. I kind of put my whole personality on display. This is who I am. This is what I'm about. This is my perspective of the world. I sent the book to a lot of people that I've worked with professionally, to friends, just sharing who I am with a broad group of people, sharing my pains, sharing my challenges, sharing what I'm optimistic about, sharing my perspective of the world.I learned a lot about myself being out in the desert for three months, and writing pretty much is my only activity other than hiking. So, I think that [authenticity] was one of my main takeaways. I think that came out in the book. It's something that I was very proud to share with the people I've worked with and the people in my personal life as well.Justin recognizes that genuine authenticity can create vulnerability and acknowledges that it isn't for everyone. Still, for those who would like to lean into it, he shared some insights for strengthening it as a skill.First, he suggests that you remember that building genuine relationships helps build business. “I trust that if I share who I am and I show genuine interest in who you are, and we build a personal connection, the business will naturally follow.”So, he notes, for business development folks like him, authenticity is a sales tool.Second, he highlights the fact that you can and should start with the easy stuff. “It doesn't need to be a deep dive into your deepest, darkest secrets. It's like, I want to know what you do for fun. Start there.”By following Justin's example and advice, you can strengthen your authenticity, potentially developing it into a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJustin Renfro (he/him):Director, Revenue Based Financing at Wefunder, WefunderAbout Wefunder: Wefunder (PBC) is an investment platform that helps startups raise capital. Dimitry, Enduring Planet Co-Founder, speaks to Green Planet Blue Planet about the fund's support for various projects from software with indirect impacts to planting trees with very explicit impacts. He speaks to the profound impact of tax incentives included in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to catalyze transformative decarbonization. Rather than necessitating a complete overhaul of existing economic and energy systems, Dimitry said by altering the economic dynamics, the tax incentive has become one of the most influential pieces of climate legislation in the US, fostering the largest expansion of clean energy investment in the nation's history. While some might have hoped for radical disruption, the government's approach to supporting decarbonization focuses on incentivizing clean energy deployment within the current framework. While it is laudable to have large decarbonization goals, Dimitry explains that for Enduring Planet, all initiatives are considered, as can be seen in their portfolio case studies. The impact metrics across businesses may be dramatically different, but it's all within their climate finance scope - from water to energy to waste. By design, every dollar they put to work is having an impact. Enduring Planet offers rapid financing without dilution, personal guarantees, or collateral. It is climate focused for impactful teams, big or small, working across mitigation, removal, adaptation, and resilience to address the climate crisis. They provide two products now, Revenue Based Financing and Climate Grant Advances for government backing to be repaid once the funding is received. Join Dimitry and Julian in this discussion of the nature of the work in a new climate economy, “where every business is a climate business.” The two explore the idea of dismantling capitalism and incentives for extractive structures that are misaligned with climate change. Learn more about Dimitry and how he came to his ecological conclusions while working in Honduras with the Peace Corps, addressing questions such as how to restore damaged ecosystems and bring the planet back to a healthy, happy place, only to determine what motivates him is love of people and a desire for equity and accessibility to services and principles of conservation. #About Dimitry Gershenson Dimitry co-founded Enduring Planet, building on his 10+ years of experience across climate tech, operations, and impact investing. Prior to Enduring Planet, Dimitry led M&A and served as COO for Rango Wireless, an Enduring Ventures portfolio company. Before that, Dimitry built Meta's Energy Access program, a $15M+ investing initiative that enabled energy access for 3M people and unlocked nearly $500M in additional capital in underserved markets like Kenya and India. While at Meta, Dimitry also led the development of multiple predictive ML products in the cleantech space and built corporate accelerator programs for impact startups in India and Puerto Rico. Outside of Enduring Planet, Dimitry sits on the board of Ecosafi, a Lower carbon-backed climate startup enabling clean cooking in emerging markets.

It's tough to raise capital these days – VC wallets are tightening as many investors are opting for a wait-and-see approach. This makes it harder to land a deal and get more cash through the door. For entrepreneurs in need of financing for their companies, equity capital is still the most popular approach but harder to come by in an inflationary environment. However, dilution by selling ownership shares in your company for a part of future cash flows is not the only way to get capital. There's also debt, which comes in the form of bond issues or loans, a means of financing operations without dilution, as long as – again — you have the cash flow to pay back the loan. But today we're talking about another way of accessing capital – recurring revenue financing - so if there's cash flow coming in, this recurring revenue is made into a tradable asset that can be sold to investors. It's a dilution-free and debt-free form of financing, which I'm exploring in more detail with Michal Cieplinski, Chief Business Officer of Pipe and Farhan Lalj, Investor at Anthemis.

Sahil (@sahil071) and Siddharth (@sidbetala) hang out and discuss various ideas on this episode of Business Munchies. We're now actively sharing interesting snippets on Twitter and reels on Instagram. Follow us there to stay updated!Timeline:(00:58) - Revenue Based Financing(22:56) - Translation Services for Movies, TV Shows on Netflix, Prime Video(33:54) - Life Skill Courses for TeenagersBusiness IdeasRevenue Based FinancingCapital is an essential commodity to grow a business. The traditional way of growing companies was Debt & Equity Investments. Debt generally comes from Banks, but they obviously don't like to take risks with unproven or unprofitable businesses. Plus putting up collateral, personal guarantees and what not.The other option is equity. In the recent years, Early stage/Growth equity has become popular thanks to the various Venture capital firms. However, you end up giving up too much equity and it prevents you from building a sustainable/profitable business. This type of equity works for ideas that don't really exist, and if they're successful, they can capture or create LARGE new markets for themselves. But, this leaves behind businesses that are profitable, but maybe not that can grow exponentially. Think D2C Brands, or SaaS businesses. How do you give them access to capital that prevents them from diluting too much equity?Enter Revenue Based Financing - This is where you get access to non-dilutive capital that can be used to grow your business and you pay a fixed fee as well as a share from the revenues to pay off your credit line. It's an interesting new lending product and we discuss the various opportunities around this. Translation Services for Netflix, Prime VideoLast week, we spoke to Abhishek Goyal, Co-founder of Cactus Communications about the large business he has built in the niche of research paper translation. We then applied the same model in the content industry where Netflix, Prime Video and other OTTs are producing so much foreign content that needs to be translated in English and also to other languages. Last year, Netflix had a shortage of agencies who could help them with this and hence had to rely on freelancers. This is an industry growing in double digits, year of year, and hence an interesting place to build a niche business. Life Skills for TeenagersOur education system is messed up and it ends up teaching A LOT of stuff that's never going to be relevant in your life and skips teaching essential life skills like Personal Finance, Health & Nutrition, Sex Ed. The idea is simple, can you build a gamified product that teaches teenagers these essential skills?
