At five years old Rock Wilk realized he could sing, that same year his grandfather gave him a guitar. A self-taught musician, he spent hours alone in his room playing alongside jazz greats honing his craft. While a defensive back at Colorado State University, his creative writing teacher Bill Tremblay identified his immense talent telling his reluctant student he was a playwright. Rock left college deciding to pursue his music career and he enjoyed success in the music business, but something just didn't feel right with the pop music direction he was advised to follow. Rock tells us of his lowest moment losing his marriage, adopted mother, and financial ruin all at once. He then takes us to his incredible pivot after reading at his first poetry slam at the Nuyorican poetry club. Rock then harnessed his ability to focus from his early years as an athlete and musician. He found a poetry club to perform in every night and wrote constantly for six years, releasing Broke Wide Open - his independently produced album in 2007 - which became his first solo play-- enjoying a highly acclaimed run at NYC's New Theater. In 2014 Rock appeared in his first feature film, Jamesy Boy, Starring James Woods, Mary Louise Parker, and Ving Rhames. Rock is the recipient of the 2106 BRIO award for acting presented by the Bronx Council on the Arts. This activist against social injustice, gun violence, and racism created The Brooklyn Quartet in collaboration with Greg E Gaines—Bring in ‘da Noise Bring in ‘da Funk. Rock's current film, The Center of Distance, featuring a breathtaking soundtrack by Steve Peckman, won best Indie feature film at the 2022 Milan Gold Awards, a film shot entirely on his phone during the pandemic. The film is also an official selection at numerous film awards, including The Aphrodite Film Awards and The IndieFest Film Awards. It's my pleasure to welcome Rock to this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. Intrinsic Drive™ is produced by Ellen Strickler and Phil Wharton. Special thanks to Andrew Hollingworth, our sound engineer and technical editor. We are grateful to Rock for permission to use "Treat You Like My Own", from his 2007 album Broke Wide Open. We had the pleasure of interviewing Rare Americans over Zoom video! Vancouver's Rare Americans invite listeners into a new world of percolating alt-pop and carnivalesque, backpack hip-hop with the announcement of their new album Rare Americans 3: Jamesy Boy & The Screw Loose Zoo out October 21st. Along with the announcement the band has shared the summer-soaked single “Hey Sunshine” featuring a fleeting romance between a horse named Alfred and a cat.Co-produced by the band alongside Grammy and JUNO winner Chin Injeti (Drake, Eminem) and Ben Kaplan (Snoop Dogg, Bootsy Collins, Shakira) who also won a JUNO for his work on Rare Americans' “Brittle Bones Nicky” and also featuring two-time Grammy-nominee D Smoke, RA3 is set in the animated universe of Rhythm Kitchen. The story begins after Jamesy Boy (the album's protagonist) is invited to the Rhythm Kitchen by his mentor, who notices he is grappling with internal demons. Documented through a series of animated music videos, the new concept album RA3 takes place during Jamesy Boy's (AKA frontman James Priestner's) trip through Rhythm Kitchen. Each song is a memory rooted in Priestner's real life. But this album isn't just about Priestner - album track “PHD,” for example, highlights a fan and now close friend of the band, Nick, who was able to turn his life around after being misdiagnosed with bi-polar disorder at the age of 12. Nick is now in the process of receiving his “PHD” to help other kids in similar positions. Listeners will be able to see more of his story celebrated with an animated video character in the new album this fall. Since their debut in 2018, Rare Americans has amassed over 150M streams as an independent band, were featured in Warner's Scoob! The Movie and broke through the Billboard Hot 100 album charts with their independently released album RA2. Their song “Baggage” recently surpassed 5 Million YouTube views and is currently outranking Machine Gun Kelly and St. Vincent with the number two spot on Canada's Breaking Alt "Alternative Specialty" chart. Revisit the “Baggage” video HERE.On RA3 the four-piece band experiments not only with a new character-driven universe but with its widest variety of instruments to date. Listeners can expect ukulele, acoustic guitar, piano, Moog sub-bass, programmed drums, a melodica and more. Stay tuned for more to come from Rare Americans soon. ABOUT RARE AMERICANSRare Americans began its journey while James and his older brother of 11 years Jared, a co-writer but not performing member in the band, were on a vacation together in the Caribbean. James recalls jokingly saying to Jared, “We should write some songs together,” to which Jared responded, “Fuck that, what about an entire album?” A week and a half later, the two of them had created 15 songs in what would later become their eponymously-titled debut album. Since then, Rare Americans have rounded out the crew with the addition of Slovak guitarists Lubo Ivan and Jan Cajka, Ginger Chen on bass and drummer Duran Ritz. They've racked up over half a million monthly listeners on Spotify in the process. Rare Americans are telling their stories directly to anyone who wants — or needs — to listen. These tales are easy to relate to for anyone who's been down or has struggled to keep up, yet are also laced with devilish optimism and hope. “We're trying to inspire and empower our fans,” Priestner states while discussing the band's mission. “We're an independent band, the underdogs, and I think a lot of our fans relate to that.”We want to hear from you! James Burns is a film director with a career that includes multiple short films in Tribeca film festival and has been working with Vice directing content for over a year. James has a unique story having been in and out of the prison system since he was 6 years old. He has spent time in solitary confinement which has shaped his perspective and current drive to bring to light issues within the prison system. After turning his situation around, his life’s story was written and produced into a Hollywood movie titled “Jamesy Boy.” Following the film James worked to create a career in film as a writer and director. Now with years of success under his belt, James focuses a lot of his storytelling on the underprivileged and marginalized trying to give a voice to the voiceless. Using his unique vantage-point, James gains access to subcultures shining a light on society’s problems in an attempt to start conversations on ways to improve these issues.
Filmmaker Randall Lawrence discusses the craft of storytelling. Lawrence is the director of the crime drama Second Chance and has acted in films like Jamesy Boy. Look for the chat link at the Inside Acting Show Listeners and Guests group on Facebook. From DC Actors Examiner: "Second Chance" premiered World Wide at the Angelika Film Center & Cafe in Fairfax, VA, Saturday, February 20th, to a packed, sit-on-the-floor-if-you-came-late theater. This fantastic film is based on the book "The Biography Of a Mental Muscle" by Cornel Evans. It is so well done and performed, you can hear the coins this film is going to make. Director Randall Lawrence, who also wrote the screenplay (and who also had roles in "Jamesy Boy" with Ving Rhames and "The Wire"), has a hit on his hands.
Bag murene udkom på dansk blu-ray fra Another World Entertainment d. 7. maj. Hør mere om filmen i podcasten og læs om blu-rayen på bloggen.
