Episode #0501! Mike, Ajay, and Tyson look back at the 2013 theatrical film "Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods" with (somehow!) both a retrospective critical eye and a fresh perspective. Ten years removed and with multiple adaptations behind us, how does the original film version of the story hold up? What precedents did it set for the next decade, and what has the rest of the franchise still failed to recapture in all that time?
Your hosts, Brandon, Wesley, and returning guest Ryan, break down everything that happens in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods and then review it on a scale of one to seven stars. Ben and Hank Dive back into Dragon Ball with the start of the modern Dragon Ball material. Starting with an anniversary short that was never officially dubed but does set the tone for what came later, they watched the filler episodes of Dragon Ball Super that kick off the first 2 story arcs, but jumped back to watch the original films that Super retold rather than watch those same stories dragged out for a dozen episodes. They also read volume 1 of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman to get the intro to Jaco before he showed up in Resurrection F. Following from here they'll just be watching Super straight through. For this episode they consumed the following 1. Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! (2008) 2. Dragon Ball Super Episodes 1 and 2 (2015) 3. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2014) 4. Dragon Ball Super Episodes 15-18 (2015) 5. Jaco the Galactic Patrolman Vol 1 (2013) 6. Dragon Ball is great! Dragon Ball Z is moderately good for a little bit then it drops off quite harshly. So here we are like 12 or so movies in and I had lost all hope. Then it happened, the unexpected, a solid Dragon Ball Z movie after 3 separate Broly movies and some other stuff. So legitimately DBZ Battle of Gods is a solid movie that captures some of the fun of the Dragon Ball series while still adhering to the "More Goku" standard the show established. Enlist today! If there was a bingo card for all that is good about Dragon Ball, this movie would win all the Dragon Balls. There are some things we thought we would never see. One of things being a Dragon Ball Z movie in theaters in America. Furthermore, a Dragon Ball Z movie in a theater in our own town. For that Dragon Ball Z movie to be highly entertaining. We also never thought we would see a movie called Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Another thing that we never thought we would be able to do? To be able to make a podcast about a movie called Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, that was a Dragon Ball Z movie we watched in a theater in our home town. These are now all things that have happened.
