Scott, the author of “Mentally Strong Leader” and CEO of Profound Performance, emphasizes the importance of mental strength, distinguishing it from emotional intelligence (EQ). He defines mental strength as the capacity to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors during difficult times. Scott suggests starting with a self-assessment to gauge one's mental strength, highlighting that self-regulation is crucial for both personal and professional success.https://scottmautz.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottmautz/

What exactly is Mental Masturbation? It's listening to podcasts passively versus immediately implementing what you learnIt's being part of a men's group where you talk about your problems versus what you've attempted to do to solve themIt's writing in your men's or gratitude journal about your thoughts and feelings so you can manage the stress of being a man versus writing out the action steps necessary to deal with your very real-world problemsLong story short, Male Mental Masturbation is knowing what to do but not doing what you know, and talking the talk without walking the walk. It's like going to the gym but not actually working out because you've convinced yourself (with a lot of help from society) that getting to the gym is good enough. That all ends here!As you'll soon discover, every episode of the MMU Podcast delivers what you'll come to know as the PodWod, aka your Podcast Workout of the Day. You'll get specific questions and actions - exercises with sets and reps - so you can crush it both inside and outside the gym.If you're a man who is looking to Muscle-Up in every area of life, hit subscribe, stay tuned, and answer the only question that will matter going forward - How do YOU MMU?Stay tuned for the first official MMU Podcast Bootcamp, a 5-part series specifically designed for June, which is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month:Part I - Are You Guilty of Mental Masturbation? Today's podcast is with Logan Christopher, strongman, author, owner of Legendary Strength, and CEO of Lost Empire Herbs. He has been a prior podcast guest speaking on mental training and giving an expansive view of the components of strength in the human being. Logan has written several books, including “Mental Muscle” and “Powered by Nature,” which I have found to be impactful, alongside numerous other manuals on human movement, performance, and mental abilities. Logan is an expert in using the natural machinery of the body in connection with our environment to help us reach our highest potential as humans. Logan's work has had a substantial impact on my own training experience, especially on the mental and herbalism ends of the equation, areas that I wouldn't have spent much time engaging with otherwise. One of the low-hanging fruits in both athletic performance and general well-being in daily life is an awareness and understanding of one's breathing patterns. As Logan has said in previous podcasts, “You are always mental training” whether you are aware of it or not, you are also training your breath, whether you are aware of it or not. The question then becomes, how aware of the breathing patterns that you carry are you or your athletes? In today's episode, Logan discusses his approach to breath training for human performance and vitality. He also talks about the inspiration he has drawn from Joseph Greenstein, also known as the Mighty Atom, on the level of breath training, and the Atom's mastery of the mental, inner game in his strongman pursuits. Within this, we discuss the regulation aspects of the body, as it pertains to feats of strength, and the process of working with those regulators in exhibiting feats of strength. We finish the show discussing integrating one's mental and emotional states into physical training means, such as sprinting. Your Life Decisions Won't Get Any Easier | Learn to Develop the Mental Muscle to Choose in Alignment Many people equate living your best life as chasing the highs that the world offers, this isn't my definition. Living your best life requires that you make the tough choices, when life calls you to choose to stay in alignment with your own wants, beliefs, and desires. Choosing alignment means choosing sacrifice, difficulty, ridicule, and oftentimes scorn. That's because staying aligned is unconventional and will often require you to make sacrifices that most people have yet developed the courage to make. Whether that involves cutting away from the people, places, and circumstances that have become your comfort zone, or taking a leap of faith that forces people to acknowledge you in a different light. While many people assuming aligning to your potential and purpose is for the hippies who make kombucha tea for fun, those of us who make it a lifestyle recognize how inaccurate this mental picture is. In all cases, the greatness lying dormant within each of us, lies in making the tough calls. Learn the significance through trial by fire and make those calls, regardless. #education #mentalmuscle #choices #decisionmaking Any questions? From an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise to getting her Pro Card on stage only to feel empty and unfulfilled, Danielle has experienced it all. Danielle started teaching group fitness more than 12 years ago and fell in love with teaching LesMills, step, Zumba, you name it. Less than a year later she stepped on stage and went Pro - only to still feel unhappy with herself and her body. Fast forward to today and Danielle works with clients both online and in-person to not only achieve the body of their dreams, but the mindset and mental muscle needed to make exercise and healthy eating a lifelong pursuit. There are many facets of the human experience we have yet to fully comprehend. While we have mapped out the systems and attributes of our physical bodies, very little is understood about the intuitive and spiritual aspects of our complex selves. Quantum physics offers us a glimpse into our connection with the universe. To help us navigate the widely uncharted territory of the ethereal, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with three authors who write about mental agility, mental hygiene, and spiritual practice. Elaine Fox is the Head of the School of Psychology at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and the author of Switch Craft: The Hidden Power of Mental Agility . She describes the concept of Switch Crafting and how to increase longevity and satisfaction in life. Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami, and Valentina Onisor, a pioneer of quantum integrated medicine discuss the essence of the book they co-authored, The Quantum Brain: Understand, Rewire, and Optimize Your Brain . They also explain the role of the chakras and preconscious in determining health and happiness.

It can make us healthier and give us a dramatic mood lift. In fact, a study from Harvard Medical School shows that, for some people who suffer from depression, this pillar works as well as antidepressants. And it's something we can do anywhere. So what is it? Listen Now!

Our guest for today's show is Logan Christopher. Logan is a strongman, author, owner of Legendary Strength and CEO of Lost Empire Herbs. Logan previously appeared on episode 111 and episode 187, where he discussed mental training in depth, as well as the “6 layers” of strength. Logan has also written several books including “Mental Muscle” and “Powered by Nature”, both of which I have found impactful reads. Logan is a master of using the natural machinery of the body, our mind, and our environment to help us reach our highest potential as humans. An interesting saying you hear over and over again is that “the game is all mental”, or it is “90% mental” by many elite athletes. Although there are general physical standards to be successful in many sports (think of the body type of a runner or a jumper, or the long arms that are very helpful in making it to the NBA) it is impossible to overlook the role of the mind, especially in elite performers. Perhaps one's genetic structure can help one to “get in the door” in the sport they are most suited for, but it is always going to be the mind that allows them higher levels of success. On the show today, Logan talks about many facets of both physical and mental training. He starts with an important facet of coaching we haven't gotten much into before, and that is on the language a coach uses to describe exercises, and training in general, and how these can impact training outcomes. He also speaks on specific learning styles that can also be used in one's visualization routines, as well as his take on the use of analogies and imagination in athletic skill performance. Logan also goes into elements of old-school strongman training, as well as a quick take on why testosterone has dropped across the world over the last 50-100 years by a substantial margin. Today's episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster and Lost Empire Herbs. For 15% off your Lost Empire Herbs order, head to www.lostempireherbs.com/justfly. View more podcast episodes at the podcast homepage. Timestamps and Main Points 5:40 – Talking about managing training in context of holding back and achieving balance in order to have continual progress 11:10 – How the language a coach uses in the course of a workout can impact the outcome of the training (especially on the level of over-training) 14:25 – The four learning styles, and how to leverage these learning styles for better training results 20:40 – How to specifically optimize the auditory learning style in training 23:10 – How to approach strengths vs. weaknesses in terms of the four learning styles and physical training 32:00 – How analogies, as spoken about by Nick Winkelman, can be effective for athletes in light of Neurolinguistic programming philosophy 33:40 – How imaginatory ability impacts one's physical and athletic abilities 39:10 – If Logan could pick only one mental training tool for himself now, and then 10 years ago, what he would utilize 43:10 – How much mental training Logan does now that he has over a decade of mental training under his belt 50:10 – Some old school strongman lift performances from the past that haven't been touched in the last 50 years 55:25 – Speaking on the link between breathing and strongman training 59:10 – Why testosterone has dropped so much in the last 50 years “Typically I don't even refer to my workouts as workouts, I refer to them as “training”” “I like to use the word “severety” for “effort” instead (of intensity)” “Words do matter, this is going to change the results we get” “(With language) taking a small thing and compounding it over time is going to be a big difference” “The four (learning) styles are visual, auditory, kinesthetic and digital” “Most people in sport tend to be kinesthetic learners…. The visual and kinesthetic are common in athletes” “As a coach, we are going to coach predominantly in our own style” “Very often,
This week we sat down with Dr. Jannell MacAulay. She's a TEDx speaker, veteran Air Force pilot, retired Lt Colonel, and mom of two, with a PhD in the field on strategic health and human performance. Dr. MacAulay was actually the first leader to introduce mindfulness as a proactive performance strategy within the US military. Her leadership background and combat aviation experience gave her a unique perspective on how to best perform under intense pressure situations when mental discipline is imperative- ultimately inspiring her to pursue her doctorate and develop her high-performance mindset training program. We had an amazing time sitting down with Dr. MacAulay to discuss her mindfulness approach and how she developed her program despite having a full time military career and a family at home- let's just say she is as impressive as she is kind and approachable. We loved chatting with her and getting a glimpse at how she trains leaders and organizations to excel in high stress environments. This week I have the pleasure of talking to Mr Mental Muscle A.K.A Nick Davenport. Nick is the owner of Mind Body 1 (https://www.themb1.com/) where he works on cognitive conditioning with all kinds of different high performers. Nick's story in how he developed his business, his practices and the science behind cognitive conditioning training is insane!! The goal behind cognitive conditioning training is not to simply work on an athlete's reaction time, but also to teach them to think and make split second decisions. I truly believe that the work Nick is doing with Mindbody 1 is what the strength and conditioning industry is missing. If you are an athlete looking to take your game to the next level this is going to be crucial for you to start looking into. Take some time to listen to Nick explain his work and start figuring out how you can implement this into your training! Today’s episode is all about that space! Not outer space. Not physical space. We’re diving a little more into what we touched on previously back in Episode 6. We briefly mentioned in that episode how purging and decluttering can be applied to more than just physical possessions. It can also be applied to your mental space. And that’s the space we’re talking about today. A lot of what you hear in this episode is inspired by what I’ve read and researched so far of David Allen’s “Getting Things Done” methodology. Today’s episode features Logan Christopher, strongman, author, owner of Legendary Strength and CEO of Lost Empire Herbs. Logan previously appeared on episode 111 where he discussed mental training in depth, including the utilization of hypnosis and mental anchors. Alongside his athletic and business pursuits, Logan has also written several books including “Mental Muscle” and “Powered by Nature”, both of which I have found impactful reads. Logan is a master of using the natural machinery of the body and our environment to help us reach our highest potential as humans. I wanted to get Logan back on the show for a few reasons. One was that he lives only an hour and a half away from me in Santa Cruz, and I knew that it would be a blast to train with him prior to recording the show. Secondly, I had took some inspiration from my past show with Logan and started using his mental training hypnosis tracks prior to my training sessions, along with using his herbs, primarily his “Phoenix” formula (containing herbs such as Ant Extract and Pine Pollen) as well as an adaptogenic mushroom tincture I put in my morning coffee. The results, were profound. Although I don’t like to pin training gains on one thing only, I managed to jump higher that year at age 35 than I had in the last 5 years. My training and overall strength had found rapid improvement, and I knew there was something special to this process. Finally, I had been reading Logan’s articles around the time I started using his herbs and came across a drawing he referred to as the “Pyramid of Strength” (see show notes), and with everything I head learned about training the last few years, this made perfect sense to me, so I wanted to explore it in depth. On today’s show, we cover just that, the Pyramid of strength, and get Logan’s take on each layer (Mental, Training, Sleep, Diet,Herbs/ Supplements, Spiritual) of what makes us thrive as athletes and human beings. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points How awkward objects and kettlebells can add value to a training sessions The layout and inspiration behind Logan’s “Pyramid of Strength” How mental state in the gym and training filters over into one’s sport How Logan approaches sleep and recovery in his own training An overview of performance herbalism and how herbalism differs from chemically driven supplements The drawbacks of typical chemical pre-workouts and herbal alternatives to these The primary herbs to look at for athletic performance Logan’s coffee additives (or replacement) for a more natural energy source Quotes “For most guys the color pink is actually going to weaken them” “Every single (training) system out there is a limited collection of movements and if we are looking at health, all around athleticism, the more different movements you’ll do, the better off you’ll be” “We are thinking and feeling beings; that involves everything we are doing. There is often a cursory acknowledgement of mental aspects of training, but there often isn’t a dialing into that and a mental understanding” “For performance, diet is not the most important thing, because how many Olympic athletes are eating Cheetos and crap food? Most of these athletes are younger guys, so there is a period you can do that, but if you want long term performance, that is not a sustainable thing” “I would say that everyone is visualizing before an exercise, but they may not be aware of it, period” “Often, people think of just getting to this ideal technique, but there are layers and layers of improving your internal technique and how you are talking to yourself, things that are going on inside, and that’s still all technique as well” “Music is used to control state, and it’s a very effective method for doing so”

On top of that, we also talked about how bodybuilding not only helped him gain physical strength, but also helped build mental strength, practice patience and develop discipline. This is a very special episode, specifically for the fitness and bodybuilding community. It’s time we REDEFINE the term bodybuilding; to include not only building muscle, but building the mind. It’s time we empower our thoughts and emotions the same way we strengthen our biceps. There are so many people walking around with great physiques, but they’re UNHAPPY. Stressed, mad, unfulfilled... That stops now. Fitness and bodybuilding is more than an industry, it’s a family that takes care of each other. So I made this episode to empower my fitness family to live a better life. Press play. Love y’all, -Ryan Howard Aka Mental Muscle Coach ♥️

Filmmaker Randall Lawrence discusses the craft of storytelling. Lawrence is the director of the crime drama Second Chance and has acted in films like Jamesy Boy. Look for the chat link at the Inside Acting Show Listeners and Guests group on Facebook. From DC Actors Examiner: "Second Chance" premiered World Wide at the Angelika Film Center & Cafe in Fairfax, VA, Saturday, February 20th, to a packed, sit-on-the-floor-if-you-came-late theater. This fantastic film is based on the book "The Biography Of a Mental Muscle" by Cornel Evans. It is so well done and performed, you can hear the coins this film is going to make. Director Randall Lawrence, who also wrote the screenplay (and who also had roles in "Jamesy Boy" with Ving Rhames and "The Wire"), has a hit on his hands.

This is Scott Selinger and welcome to another fantastic jabbering edition of - ABC’s for ECP’s, the podcast on behalf of the Northern California’s chapter of the American College of Physicians Council of Early Career Physicians. To those most loyal of followers, you’ll notice it’s been a number of months since there’s been any movement with this podcast due to a combination of work, extracurriculars, and a new baby, but I am making an early new years resolution to more regularly get these up, up and away. Let’s put a pin in the idea of new years resolutions too because I want to come back to that. There was a recent research letter in JAMA that set off a few ideas downstream for me. The letter was dubbed “Time of Day and the Decision to Prescribe Antibiotics.” Now just reading that title, my reaction and that of most people I’ve talked to about this was “well of course antibiotic prescribing goes up as the day wears on.”To summarize a little bit, the study looked at outpatient encounters for a number of upper respiratory infections through coding review, some of which are cases where antibiotics are sometimes indicated (i.e. sinusitis, otitis, strep pharyngitis) and others where they are never indicated (i.e. acute bronchitis, non-strep pharyngitis) in patients with NO comorbidities or other indications to receive antibiotics. There were a number of more subtle findings but the answer did end up looking like yes, the amount of antibiotics prescribed, whether for conditions indicated or not, did increase as both the morning and afternoon clinic shifts wore on. This sounds like an expected result, but why? The study talked about the idea of decision fatigue, meaning the more decisions you have to make, the more you start looking for the easiest solutions. Think about when you get a survey to fill out - do you spend as much time and thoughtfulness on the first answer as you do the tenth? For most of us, no, we don’t. And the translation for this is the otherwise healthy, mildly sick patient coming in asking for a z-pack for their cold. If it’s 9am and you just finished your coffee, you have a lot more energy in you to talk with them about the lack of efficacy and risk of side effects than you do when it’s 5:30, you’re worrying about traffic on the ride home, you have some loose ends to follow up on from the rest of the day, and you’re just physically and mentally tired. And those are the people more likely to get inappropriate antibiotics. This letter pointed to an idea from The Psychology Bulletin comparing the mind’s self-regulation and self-control to a muscle - the more you use it, the more fatigued it gets. This idea that you have a set amount of self-control to use throughout the day is certainly something to think about. When you’re running a marathon, you make sure to take in some water at set intervals and sometimes slow down and walk so you can make it to the finish line. But most of us don’t necessarily get to have those breaks when we need them - usually that’s the busiest part of our day. And I don’t think this is necessarily something limited to the outpatient world. Admissions also seem to go up as the day wears on in most places along with more decisions to make about workup and treatment (addendum: I was just guessing at this at first but it was hard to find data to back this - a VA study showed about 51% of patients visiting between 5 pm and 1 am were admitted, but also said this was contrary to national findings. The only real data I could find from the CDC (see below) showed an uptick in the afternoons but pretty steady admissions from about 10 am to 10 pm). At the end of a shift, are you more likely to order a CT scan than at the start of the day? What about admitting someone who could potentially be sent home? What about dealing with calls from the wards? Looping back around to New Years resolutions, is this the same reason why most people fall off their wagon as the days and months drag on? Do we just get tired of making the decisions we know we should? This might be a reason why things like meal planning for weight loss are always recommended - it focuses most of the decision making at the beginning of the week so that when you get to Thursday night, you know you’re having brown rice and salmon with broccoli and not a Double-Double with fries from In-N-Out on the drive home.So how is all this helpful in our daily practice? With all the focus on mindfulness - mindful meditation, mindful eating, etc. - I think it’s a reminder of an area to focus on for mindful practice with the idea of going into your day knowing you’re going to be tired and trying to factor in a mental break towards the end of your shift, be it something like an actual snack break or a short meditative session (for fun tips about how to do this, check out the earlier podcast in the series, “Just Breathe”). And maybe a way to help us stick to our new years resolutions as well and help our patients with theirs too.As always, I’d love to hear your feedback on this, so if you have any burning questions or comments, you can post them on the blog at canocecp.blogspot.com, our podcast page on itunes, our facebook page or email them to canocecp@gmail.com. And if you have time, be sure to head on over and check out our brand new official page for the Northern California Chapter of the ACP Council of Early Career Physicians so you can find out more about the events going on in the chapter. Stay safe and have a happy 2015!
Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the belief that it is noble to be poor. But why? We can be anything---noble, helpful, selfless---and be full of the opportunities the Universe wants to send us. We can be rich, and live rich lives. "When we establish ourselves in the consciousness of God, when we seek first the kingdom, the whole Universe moves to flow into us with its abundance of its life and substance." -- Charles Fillmore We stand as an antenna of infinite possibility.
