Can’t wait to find out all about this project and more. BEN RACINE Ben finally takes his seat on The Couch and we will talk about his incredible career and the new album Live À Montréal. LAURIE JANE & THE 45’S I am looking forward to speaking with Laurie Jane and Cort. Together they lead this band of talented musicians. We’ll listen to music from their self-titled album. MIKE OSBORN – COUCH KID NEW MUSIC Mike comes by to talk about the new album, Unbroken.
Jay David Cover of the AARP and Other Stuff Things we discuss in this episode: My flooded basement apartment. Playing venues in Philadelphia… There’s a section that got a little garbled, I guess due to a bad connection, Maybe Jay was walking through a dead zone in his house. For whatever reason, you may not be able to understand the audio. Don’t tune out, it gets clear again for the remainder of the show. He was telling me how he started at the age of two singing not the Horn & Hardart Children’s Hour. Horn and Hardart was a “food service automat”, where all the food came out of vending machines. I remember how my mother would never let us go in. She used to tell us, you won’t like anything in there. I wasn’t crazy about eating baked beans anyway. Or a slice of pie that had been sitting inside of a vending machine of who knows how long? Anyway, Jay went on to say how he started out banging out drumbeats on the dining room table and annoyed the hell out of people with his incessant drumming on everything. He eventually took lessons but got bored. So he learned by listening to the records, eventually giving lessons the same way he wanted to learn. Taught drums by having drum students bring him the records with the songs they wanted to learn and just teach them to play those songs. I know some music teachers who hate guys like that. If you’re not teaching the fundamentals, they look down their noses at you. Personally, I think there’s room for both teaching styles. Hey, what’s wrong with learning to play your favorite songs? We swapped stories about his mom and Frank Sinatra’s mom Drum Corp competitions. Reilly’s Raiders in Willow Grove, PA (Still there!) Shelter dogs, Carnegie Hall, the Navy, Hospital Corps, Dolly Sinatra, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra. Boots. Dorsey Brothers, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Brenda Lee, The Wagon Wheel, Mercury Records, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, getting signed by Clive Davis Links to Videos, etc. The Last Morning by Dr. Hook Cover of The Rolling Stone by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show Cover of the AARP – parody by Jay David (music by Shel Silverstein) Cover of AARP Personnel Jay David wrote and recorded based on the music of Shel Silverstein Ooks of Hazzard played, and their drummer, Matt Tecu is the guy with the deep voice singing the 2nd verse Janiva Magness – blues singer sang harmony. Here’s a little taste of Janiva singing Make It Rain (and doing a Tom Waits song some serious justice)

Awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 1996 for his outstanding contributions to British music, inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of both Small Faces & Faces, McLagan is beloved by musicians and music lovers alike. JANIVA MAGNESS returns to WoodSongs on the heels of FOUR major Blues Awards for 2011 including: BB King Entertainer Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year, and Contemporary Blue Album Of The Year. Although Magness is now a bona fide blues star, her rise to the top was far from easy. She has been performing for almost three decades, logging thousands of miles on the road and appearing 150 nights a year at clubs, theaters and festivals all over the world. Janiva and her full band will be supporting her latest CD on Alligator Records called "The Devil Is An Angel Too." In addition to her musical accomplishments, Magness is reaching out to help others. She is a National Spokesperson for Casey Family Programs (her fourth consecutive year), promoting National Foster Care Month. THE HONEY DEWDROPS make their home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish have been playing music in some capacity for over 15 years, but honed in on their natural duet abilities 7 years ago when they met for the first time in college. It was their love of folk music that brought them together and has since taken them out on the road to tour fulltime as the award-winning duet they are today. After their appearance and first place win on a 2008 talent show broadcast of NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion", the Dewdrops began their careers as songwriters and have since released two critically acclaimed albums.
This is show #97, Women in Blues 2010, Part Two! Hey! Welcome back, everybody! It's time for another episode of The BluzNdaBlood Show! This is your BluzNdaBlood DJ coming at you from the Star City of Virginia … Well, this show is the second part to a very special episode! Well, when I did Show #93 Women in Blues, I quickly ran out of space for the show and I hate having to eliminate playing songs… But there were enough of them that it was obvious to me that a Part 2 Show was inevitable! Unfortunately, I still have tunes from Roxy Perry and Pat Pepin that still are to be played! There's just isn't enough time to play ‘em all! But, they'll be on the next show or two! We started off the show with the beautiful blues piano player playing her own tune, “Honey's Blues” off of the CD, For the Chosen Who. So what other beautiful blues women are we going to hear from on today's show other than Honey Piazza? Well, how about Inetta Visor from the with their tune, “Let's Live It Up”! We'll also hear with her song, “Blues Ain't Far Behind”, then we'll be treated to cranking out “Give Me Back My Wig.” Yea, I'm not sure what the lyrics mean either! But it's good stuff! follows up highlighting their 10 or 11 year old female drummer Taya Perry playing, “Roots.” then treats us with her “Music Makin' Mama” tune off her CD. We then follow up with belting out “Goin' Home” followed by playing “Party Town”. Now that the show is really cranked up, it's then time for to get us licking our lips when she's singing about her “Fried Chicken”! then shakes the joint with some help from Watermelon Slim playing “The Barrelhouse Funeral”… chimes in with her boogie drenched “Two Fisted Mama” song on her CD, Deluxe Edition! Then joinging the fun and wrapping up the great show is , “The Devil Is An Angel”, followed by , “All You Can Eat (And You Can Eat It All Night Long)”, and finished up by the great with her “Big Ovaries, Baby”! What a show! Thanks to all the beautiful women who made this show possible with their music! Also, special thanks to Honey, Karen, Amy, Buzzy, Janiva, and Candye for their Intro's and ID's! Well, that wraps up Show #97, “Women In Blues 2010, Part Two! Well, you know the routine! Now that you've heard this great music, go out and by the music! Or go out and see them live! Mentioned during this show: I neglected to mention two groups for which Janiva Magness is a tireless advocate: Casey Family Programs and Foster Care Month; also - a Youtube video of Alejandro Escovedo and Bruce Springsteen performing Alejandro's new single "Wasn't I Always A Friend" live in Houston. Excellent online resources for more information about the blues: The Blues Foundation and the Delta Blues Museum; and be sure to download and listen to the DBM's top-notch (and free) podcast, the Uncensored History of the Blues. Be sure to read Today's Chicago Blues by Karen Hanson, an excellent guide to all things blues in present-day Chicago.
