Does the mind of Eric Earley from Blitzen Trapper ever rest? I think not. After all, he told me that he liked to solve math problems in college while he was making breakfast. Earley is a voracious reader who just finished his self-proclaimed "Time of the Tomes," in which he read nothing but, well, tomes. (The longer, the better. Infinite Jest? Please. Kid's stuff).Earley has a family and his other occupation involves working with the homeless population in Portland, so he's not quite as active as he used to be. But that's only because he doesn't have as much time, although now he's quite invested in meditation and dream journals. And songwriting, of course. This is the second time I've interviewed Earley; the first was in 2018, when he told me that he'd written five unpublished novels "just for fun." Earley is also responsible for turning me on to the great short story writer Breece D'J Pancake. Blitzen Trapper's latest album 100's of 1000's, Millions of Billions is out now on Yep Roc Records.

Jobi has just released her debut album, Whiplash, on Yep Roc Records. We discuss the origin stories of some of these excellent songs, as well as the winding road story of the album's creation itself. Jenny Owen Youngs had me at "Shitty First Drafts." This is the Anne Lamott essay espousing the idea that the first draft of anything is supposed to be atrocious. Just get it down, dammit. "Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts," Lamott writes. The polish comes later. I always assigned this essay to my students when I was a professor. The challenge comes when you're a parent, as Youngs is. (We have four kids, so I know the feeling.) How do you even find the time to create multiple drafts and feel like you're not wasting your time by intentionally writing a terrible one? As you'll hear, the shitty first draft method is not only a more efficient process, but when your time is no longer your own, you become a much more efficient writer. So a win all around. Youngs's new album Avalanche is fantastic and is out September 22 on Yep Roc Records.

Michaela Anne is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Nashville, TN. Her fifth full length record Oh To Be That Free was released on June 10th of 2022 on Yep Roc Records and it is a gorgeous, powerful collection of songs. PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about the canonical playlist that's part of every Independence Day fireworks display, the time Scott accidentally hit Lee Greenwood in the face with a water balloon, and how our Patreon supporters can get the chance to get their hands on one of the very first copies of Dave Alvin's forthcoming book New Highway. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with "Fourth of July" composer Dave Alvin on the Fourth of July! ABOUT DAVE ALVIN:Grammy-winning artist, musician, songwriter, poet, and roots music pioneer Dave Alvin launched his professional career when he and his brother Phil founded the Downey, California, based group The Blasters. Blending rockabilly and R&B, Dave became the band's primary songwriter, penning classics such as “Marie, Marie,” “American Music,” “Border Radio,” “Jubilee Train,” “Little Honey,” “Dark Night,” and “Long White Cadillac,” which later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam. After a brief stint as a member of the band X, Dave launched a solo career and continued to craft critically-acclaimed songs that defy genre, including “Fourth of July,” “Haley's Comet,” “Dry River,” “King of California,” “Abilene,” “Ashgrove,” “Harlan County Line,” “Johnny Ace is Dead,” and “Downey to Lubbock,” a collaboration with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Dave's songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Little Milton, Buckwheat Zydeko, Shakin' Stevens, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, and others. Additionally, his music has been featured on a number of TV soundtracks, including Justified and The Sopranos.

"We are an artist driven label which refuses to be labeled!" The role of the indie record company imprint in popular music cannot be understated. From garage rock to modern jazz - independent labels have nurtured artists who continue to make a tremendous impact on the masses. Enter Tor Hansen and Glenn Dicker; founders of Yep Roc. Among the giants of the indie world, their love of the "big M" is infectious, and their roster is as strong as ever. Tor and Glenn talk with hosts David C. Gross and Tom Semioli about the past, present, and future of independent artists, recorded music, and live performance! The Yep Roc Records Playlist
This week, we call into the Catskills of New York for a deep conversation with James Felice: accordionist, pianist, songwriter and co-founder of fun-house-mirror Americana group The Felice Brothers. James started the band with his brothers (poet lead singer Ian) and percussionist Simone in 2006 as a busking folk pop experiment with a literary rebel streak within the subways of New York City. They've joined roots-pop luminaries like Bright Eyes at venues as storied as Radio City Music Hall - but somehow the gritty, back-alley bar seems like their natural habitat. Ian, James and their longtime quartet (Will Lawrence and bassist Jesske Hume round out the band) returned after years of hibernation to release their daring party-through-the-apocalypse rollercoaster of a new LP From Dreams To Dust in 2021 on Yep Roc Records. Some bands record at home, or maybe in tricked-out cabins or plush studios, but The Felice Brothers seem to make records that use their unique and often bizarre surroundings as an added character in the band. Their beloved self-titled record, which came out 2008, feels like a gin-soaked saloon party where Hemingway and Lou Reed and Sly Stone would join in on swaying sing-alongs besides a sweat-soaked piano. It was somehow recorded in a converted chicken coop, while their brassy, bizarro-rock romp Celebration, Florida (2011) was recorded in a booming high school gymnasium. “Honda Civic” is a musical-theater-esque favorite, with an explosion at the local Wonder Bread warehouse taking center stage in the narrative. Does any of it make sense? Does it matter?Their newest work is a more emotional, sonically lush, storytelling driven operation, having been recorded in a church in Harlemville, New York with award-winning mixer Mike Mogis at the helm. Mortality takes the spotlight. Ian Felice is in rare form here, spitting more words and setting more strange scenes per song than most slam-poets or absurdist playwrights. The lead song “Jazz On The Autobahn” has become a staple on Americana radio, showcasing what TFB have always done best: taking their listeners on a white-knuckle ride that has no predicable end or resolve in sight. Today on the show, returning Transmissions guest Nick Lowe. 20 years ago, he released The Convincer, which many folks argue is his best album. It's reissued by Yep Roc Records this week. Following his rough and rowdy start at Stiff, his work producing Elvis Costello in the '70s & '80s, and a stint as a genuine pop star following the massive hit “Cruel to Be Kind,” Lowe found himself interested in reinventing the way he made records. The Convincer is part of a long line of albums that embrace subtle pop, R&B, and country tones, with Lowe's gentle voice leaning into the crooner side of things. Originally released on September 11, 2001, The Convincer helped to establish Lowe's reputation as a songwriter's songwriter.
The Rubinoos came out of Berkley, California in the early Seventies. Known for their melodic hooks and tight harmonies, the band charted with a cover of the Tommy James' hit, “I Think We're Alone Now,” and their own “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” They also placed the title song in the teen classic Revenge of the Nerds. After a hiatus, the guys have actually been quite busy releasing a string of albums that have been well-received in the power pop community. Before all of this, the Rubinoos were just a quartet of kids in high school, looking for a lucky break. The CBS Tapes, is a live, in-the-studio recording featuring the band's high energy on 11 previously unheard tracks, just out on Yep Roc Records. The band runs though an eclectic set of songs, from the Beatles, the Meters, the Ventures and even the Archies, to several band originals. We talk with guitarist Tommy Dunbar about what led up to this archival release. Plus, the true story of how they got bananas thrown at them opening for Jefferson Starship!
A conversation with http://www.thejoeswank.com/ (Joe Swank), a freelance radio promoter who previously worked in the radio space at https://www.bloodshotrecords.com/ (Yep Roc Records) and https://www.bloodshotrecords.com/ (Bloodshot Records). Joe was also a touring musician in the '90s, hosts his own radio show, and co-founded the https://altcountrychart.com/ (Alt-country Specialty Radio Chart) — so he's got a LOT of wisdom to share not only on the radio side, but on building a music industry career in general. As we've heard on other episodes; be ready to stay in it for the long haul, don't bank on overnight success, and constantly (C O N S T A N T L Y) work on developing your network. Also, be nice to people.
This week, we place a call into Woodstock, NY, where we speak to a respected singer, songwriter, sometimes drummer and beloved daughter of Levon Helm of The Band: Amy Helm. Growing up in the home of two working performers (her mother is singer Libby Titus, who wrote songs covered by Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt) wasn't always the easiest for the introspective Helm, but it gave her a fertile proving ground to begin her exploration in creating her own soaring songs in the folk, blues and soul traditions. She waited until she was forty-four to release her acclaimed first solo record Didn't It Rain, with her father lending his signature earthy drums on several tracks – and this year, she teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and producer Josh Kaufman (Taylor Swift, Bonny Light Horseman) to create What The Flood Leaves Behind, her most emotive and lushly-realized project yet. With her dogs often joining the conversation from her upstate home, Amy dives into her early years trying her hand at singing in New York City cafes, having folks walk out of her folk fest shows because her band was too loud, founding the band Ollabelle, joining her stepdad Donald Fagen's group Steely Dan onstage, backing up legends like Stax soul artist William Bell and finally reconnecting with her dad in her mid-thirties as he began his late life renaissance, hosting his epic Americana throwdowns called “The Midnight Rambles.” It was being a member of that crack “ramble band” that gave Amy the final push to pursue her own lead voice. While Levon famously struggled with heroine addiction and the foibles of post-Bob Dylan and The Band fame fallout, it was when he got clean and took Amy under his wing that both of their stars began to rise again. You can hear Amy singing on his gorgeous return in 2017's Dirt Farmer. Becoming more ambitious, Amy laid down her upbeat rock-n-soul-tinged second album with producer Joe Henry in LA with notable players like Doyle Bramhall II, Tyler Chester, and a vocal choir of Allison Russell, JT Nero (Birds of Chicago) and Adam Minkoff. This Too Shall Light was released in 2018 on Yep Roc Records and Amy began to be recognized as one of the most powerful singers touring the Americana circuit. Her newest record was recorded at her spiritual home, Levon Helm Studios, where each ramble still takes place on the weekends. During the pandemic, Helm had a unique idea to keep her creative muscles strong, even when live music gatherings were not technically allowed in public. She began setting up “curbside concerts” for her friends and any curious fans who missed her songs, touring around Woodstock with her guitar, bringing a little joy to her shut-in listeners during New York's darkest hours. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear her introduce the spiritual opening track of What The Flood Leaves Behind, “Verse 23.”
We'll hear from Woody Platt and Graham Sharp of the Steep Canyon Rangers; the GRAMMY Award-winning outfit behind albums like Nobody Knows You, Out in the Open, and most recently Arm in Arm, which is available now via Yep Roc Records. They've also collaborated quite a bit with comedian and banjo player, Steve Martin, on albums like Rare Bird Alert, and The Long-Awaited Album. Woody and Graham are joined by Amy Wright whose got some great questions ready, so let's get it to. Your conversations with the leaders and legends in the Americana and Roots music are right here on Insights. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We spend this episode with Nashville based singer/songwriter Michaela Anne, who released her third full length album (her first with label Yep Roc Records), the wonderful Desert Dove, in 2019. We discuss the diverse arrangements and songwriting styles on the record, which, while a country record at its core, integrates a variety of sounds and influences. Michaela has an interesting background, moving around a lot as she grew up; we discuss how this has impacted her creative style. Michaela also provides two helpful public service announcements (everyone keep singing!), and we spend some time deconstructing Chopin’s Nocturne #72 and Donnie Osmond’s “Puppy Love”, finding their shared musical core.

“These songs come from a place of exhaustion, bewilderment and pure love,” says Nashville-based singer/songwriter Dawn Landes of My Tiny Twilight, a six-song collection out May 10 on Yep Roc Records. “I found myself singing to my daughter constantly to soothe her, entertain her, and pass the time, says Landes. “The first song I wrote was “Hushabye.” I couldn’t get her to stop crying so I sat at the piano and played until she quieted down. She responded to the melody and it became pretty useful in those first months.” You can also hear the whole song 'I'm Your Mama' at the end of the show. How about the video that Dawn directed herself? Check it! https://youtu.be/ibw8RNiDybI Continue reading Episode #218 – Dawn Landes on the site.

AMY HELM’s ’This Too Shall Light’,on Yep Roc Records, is marked by streaks of Americana, country, blues, and gospel, and the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. The daughter of The Band’s legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus, Helm began her musical career as a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and later served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band. While ‘This Too Shall Light’ is only Helm’s second album under her own name, it serves as a comprehensive portrait covering her life's journeys and recoveries; They’re the stories that, no matter where they take her, seem to end and begin in the same place like a circle. SETH WALKER has become recognized as one of the most revered modern roots artists in the United States; a three dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice with a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. His latest studio album is 'Gotta Get Back'. WoodSongs Kids: The Wallace Sisters have been harmonizing together since they could talk. The siblings from Lexington, Kentucky enjoy singing for their schools and church choir but a year ago began singing officially as a trio at local events.

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist digs into the Death Rocker/L.A. Punk supergroup, the Flesh Eaters, with lead vocalist and head visionary, Chris D! Coming out of the original late 1970’s L.A. punk scene, centered around the legendary club The Masque, Chris D, a cerebral poet, journalist and singer, turned in his own brand of Western America influenced punk. Less New York and London and more it’s own thing encompassing a wide variety of styles, with jazz elements, Chris focused on unique instrumentation and howling vocals to get the job done. In 1981, with the album “A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die”, the band reached supergroup status by including John Doe & D.J. Bonebrake from X, Dave Alvin and Bill Bateman from the Blasters and Steve Berlin before he joined Los Lobos. It was the only album to feature all of these now well known musicians. Well Chris and the boys are back and in a big way and including Chris’s ex-wife/bandmate, extraordinary vocalist Julie Christensen (see her credits). They have just released a new album of material that not only reaches the heights of “A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die”, but may even surpass it with it’s David Lynch film aesthetic and spooky themes that make it chic and romantic to worship the dead. The album is “I Used to Be Pretty” and is out now on Yep Roc Records. And lucky you, they are on tour at various times in 2019. Christian was in attendance on their San Francisco stop and if you love something ultra cool and deliciously decadent, it’s a must see show! http://www.yeproc.com/artists/the-flesh-eaters/ https://www.amazon.com/Used-Be-Pretty-Flesh-Eaters/dp/B07GTBJQQ1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549311708&sr=8-1&keywords=the+flesh+eaters You can support the show by wearing cool rock n roll gear from TeePublic: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/rocknroll Call us at 650-822-ROCK or email at: info@rocknrollarchaeology.com

One lucky afternoon, Jim Lauderdale did not have to go to a gig, and I got to sit down with him for an impromptu conversation. Doing an interview with Jim was always a goal, but it just so happened that it came unexpectedly. What could we talk about? What in music was there not to talk about with Jim Lauderdale? Jim Lauderdale in Black Mountain, NC for Jam In The Trees 8-25-18 A great problem to have for anyone doing this is to land one of the most highly acclaimed songwriters and performers of their generation, no matter the time or place. But once you bring them to the microphone and pull off a lively conversation (you can be the judge of that in a bit here), what do you do then? It is as if you have just been given a Lamborghini for the afternoon at the track, and have been told to put it through its paces. Like being dropped off at base camp at Mt. Everest. It's all yours -- go for it!So much has been written about Jim Lauderdale, that I paused and wondered what I could add with this podcast. He has been all over the world, has been interviewed countless times, has been on TV, and he has his own satellite radio show. They made a film documentary about him, for crying out loud. Jim Lauderdale was looking like a mountain that I could not climb, a race that I dare not attempt. Jim Lauderdale & Roland White, the 1979 album that finally saw release almost 40 years after being made. It would take more than a decade after this recording for Jim's first album to come out. Thankfully, this line of thinking did not last long. I had in hand almost 45 minutes of Jim Lauderdale talking about songwriting, acting, losing his Southern accent, giving a cringe worthy tour story, and in general being his jovial self. It would be criminal to waste the opportunity. Pretty soon, I got in touch with Glenn Dicker of Yep Roc Records and Red Eye Worldwide distributing, and Craig Havighurst, author, journalist and producer of Music City Roots. Both have known and worked with Jim for years. They are a key part of this episode, which includes a healthy portion of music from Jim, especially his latest releases, Time Flies, and Jim Lauderdale & Roland White, the 1979 collaboration that was lost until finally coming to light this year. Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard’s Transmissions Podcast, a recurring series of conversations with songwriters, authors, and creators about what drives their art. We’re proud to share an interview with Nick Lowe this week. AD’s Jason P. Woodbury talked with the producer, songwriter, and performer, who’s made records with Elvis Costello, the Damned, Squeeze, Johnny Cash, and dozens more, and penned classic songs like “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding,” “Cruel to Be Kind,” “I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass,” “The Beast in Me,” and many others. On Friday, July 14th, Yep Roc Records releases the first in a series of reissues documenting Lowe’s ’80s era, beginning with 1982’s Nick the Knife and 1983’s The Abominable Showman, with the rest of his catalog through 1990’s Party of One coming throughout 2017. The period saw the British rocker expanding his stylistic palette, exploring the ties between skiffle and country music. While his edges softened some sonically, his lyrical focus remained sharp, and songs like “All Men Are Liars” and “My Heart Hurt” point to the kind of songs that would bolster his late career renaissance in the early 2000s and up to present day. We reached Lowe from Nashville to discuss those records, his marriage to Carlene Carter, the pub rock, punk rock, hanging out with Lemmy’s pre-Motörhead band Hawkwind in the early days, and a lot more.
Part of the Wilson Special Collections Library, Carolina's Southern Folklife Collection is home to nearly a quarter of a million recordings of music ranging from blues and folk to gospel and rock-and-roll. Beginning this weekend, on Record Store Day, the Southern Folklife Collection and it's partner Yep Roc Records will be releasing rare archival recordings from its collections — starting with Dolly Parton's first single "Puppy Love." In this week's episode, we talk about the collection's partnership with the local record label and the upcoming record release with Steve Weiss, the curator of the Southern Folklife Collection.
From Pollywood Studios in Eagle Rock, California it's the second episode of the Jukebox Graduate. We listen to tracks from Tift Merritt and Abel Franco. And, we discuss the new stuff that has been filling our ears. Amongst all this we will hear drops from just about everyone we've mentioned as well as Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and the Chi-Lites. Episode #24: Independent labels have long been at the forefront of bringing great music to the public, especially lost gems and overlooked greats that went out of print or were never pressed on any other format than vinyl. Today we talk reissues with the labels Yep Roc and Light in the Attic, as well as talking to one of the bands whose output is receiving the reissue treatment: seminal pub rock band Eggs Over Easy. Yep Roc's General Manager Billy Maupin discusses reissues in general, and Light in the Attic's Matt Sullivan gives us the scoop on tracking down enigmatic folk musician Sixto Rodriguez, and more! In this first episode of the Jukebox Graduate, Dave and Eugene discuss how music has been a guiding light in their lives, how they met, the first moment that they caught the bug, how they consume music, what they can still learn from great records, the losses of 2016, the unknowable legacy of rock and roll, and the relevance of outtakes. After listening to a new Chuck Prophet song they discuss recent releases from Ryan Adams, Joseph, LP, Bash & Pop, Porcelain Raft, Allison Crutchfield, John Mayer, Ron Gallo, Strand of Oaks, Dawes, Sturgil Simpson and Ty Segall. They close out with a song from Wesley Stace backed by the Jayhawks. Somehow in the midst of all of that we hear a little bit of Russell Scott & His Red Hots, Jason Isbell, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and the Band. THE HOLMES BROTHERS are true treasures of American roots music. For 35 years, The Holmes Brothers joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock n roll and country has been captivating audiences around the world. Their spine-tingling three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendells gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsys soaring falsetto and Shermans rich baritone, brings the spirit of gospel-inflected deep soul music into every song they perform. The bands new Alligator Records album, 'Brotherhood' is another stellar chapter in The Holmes Brothers storied and still-evolving history. CHATHAM COUNTY LINE enters their second decade as an ensemble, the band bring a deep reverence for traditional American roots music and timeless bluegrass instrumentation to insightful, poetic original songs that are powerfully contemporary yet rich with the complex resonance of their southern heritage. Over the course of six studio albums and performances around the world, they have pursued a singular style that is entirely their own, yet connects with audiences from all walks. 'Tightrope' is the title of the band's new album released on Yep Roc Records.

Kimberley Rew is probably best known for writing “Walking on Sunshine,” the 1985 smash for Katrina & the Waves. While a member of that band, he also penned “Going Down to Liverpool,” later covered by the Bangles. But before his hit-making success, Rew played guitar in the seminal alternative band the Soft Boys along with Robyn Hitchcock, who had a big impact on bands like REM. Yep Roc Records has just released that influential band’s first two albums, A Can of Bees and Underwater Moonlight, with additional bonus tracks.
