His albums Life After Rock N Roll (2017 Full Bloom Records) and The Midnight Strain (2018 Full Bloom Records) have been hailed by music publications and played on radio stations in the US, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Australia. Matt's sound is a clever blend of numerous styles of the music that have influenced him since his youth - early electric and country Blues, Rock N Roll, Rockabilly, Soul, R&B, Country, Bluegrass, Jazz and Psychedelia. His focus on making all original music by combining the influences that inspired him, along with his own ideas, have produced an exciting blend of many genres without rules or limitations.   His exposure to music came first came from his mother through her love of Motown. When Matt was 9 years old, she took him to a Prince concert and afterwards, he knew he wanted to be a musician. His musical education began with his late uncle who turned him onto a record collection that included early 1950's electric Blues and 1960's Rock which inspired Matt to play guitar. When he was 13, Matt got a knock off electric guitar for $25 at a flea market and set out to learn the instrument. He furthered his musical education when he began absorbing the music on old record labels, notably Chess, Sun and Stax .    Less than a decade later, he began performing in clubs and in the years to follow, he established himself as a highly regarded musician in the Blues world with his first release, Hard Luck (2007), as one of the few artists in the genre capable of writing relevant original material without relying on any cover songs from the past. The album got rave reviews in multiple music publications, radio play on stations around the world and a featured spot on XM 74 Satellite Radio as a 'Pick to Click'. Around this time Matt joined Bob Margolin (guitarist for Muddy Waters 1973-1980) and performed with some of his heroes, legendary artists like Howlin' Wolf's guitarist Hubert Sumlin and members of Muddy Water's band, Pinetop Perkins and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith.   While he was looking for a new direction to expand his music, Matt started working with drummer Austin Hicks after they met on Craigslist in 2013. They formed the drum-guitar duo, the Low Counts and branded themselves as, "Blue Collar Rock-N-Roll". They turned heads, made dedicated fans and blew audiences away with their no frills, high energy stage show. Their ride was cut short on March 8th 2017 when Austin passed away unexpectedly. Matt wrote 27 songs that the duo released over three albums in the four short years they were together (The Low Counts 2014 Real Original Records, Unsettled Days 2015 Grimtale Records, Years Pass By 2015 Real Original Records) Matt released his first full length solo studio album in almost a decade, Life After Rock N Roll' (2017 Full Bloom Records). The album reignited his standing as a solo artist and found him stretching out to make powerful, refined music that was entirely different than any of his previous works and his third full length studio album, The Midnight Strain (2018 Full Bloom Records) built upon that success. Matt released his fourth full length studio album 'Burnt Out Soul' (Full Bloom Records) on September 25th 2020 that he recorded at the legendary Columbia Records Studio A on Music Row in Nashville TN.   Iris Marlowe is a singer-songwriter from Chicago, IL. Iris has been playing and writing music since she was 3 years old. She begun taking music seriously in 2018 and started to cultivate her sound. After releasing two albums 'Savannah' (2019) and 'Winter Solace' (2020) she decided to work on a western album inspired by spaghetti westerns and the occult. 'Home' is the first single to be released from the upcoming album. It's a folk song from the record that focuses on the reflection and acceptance you feel when you outgrow the place you grew up in.

Highway 61 (US 61) is a major highway which extends 1,400 miles (2,300 km) between New Orleans, Louisiana and the city of Wyoming, Minnesota. The highway is often called the Blues Highway because of its long history with the Blues genre. A notable song named for the highway was the 1981 song, "61 Highway", by bluesman James "Son" Thomas. Highway 61 later gave its name to Minnesota native Bob Dylan's album Highway 61 Revisited and to the song of the same name. The junction of US 61 and U.S. 49 in Clarksdale (see our picture) is designated as the famous crossroads where, according to legend, Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for mastery of the blues. It was on this stretch of highway that blues singer Bessie Smith died as a result of a car accident on September 26, 1937.Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ****** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com**** You'll hear:1)     The Party's Still Going On by Marcia Ball2)     Down The Road Apiece by The Rolling Stones3)     Born In Chicago by Paul Butterfield Blues Band4)     Change It by Stevie Ray Vaughan5)     Nothing Takes The Place Of You by Marva Wright6)     Rockin' Pneumonia by Professor Longhair7)     Going Home (Where The Women Got Meat On Their Bones) by Son Seals8)     New York City Blues by The Yardbirds (with Jeff Beck)9)     Strawdogs (Before The Fall) by Terrell10) Lonely Avenue by Ray Charles11) Backup Plan by Tommy Castro12) Too Many Myths by Van Morrison13) Voodoo Music by Los Lobos14) Speak No Evil by Tinsley Ellis15) Hoochie Coochie Man by Muddy Waters16) I'm The Fixer by Willie Mabon17) Blues Lover by Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin

Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is the on air indie show. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 51. First, music history trivia for June 7th. In 1963 the Rolling Stones released their debut single “Come On”. Chuck Berry wrote the song. It reached No. 21 in the UK chart. The following year during their first US tour fans booed The Rolling Stones off stage at a gig in San Antonio, Texas. They brought some performing monkeys who had been the act on before the Stones back on stage for another performance. We meet North Carolina gospel blues guitarist Nathan Pope today. He received his first guitar at 2 and was teaching himself to play by the age of 7.  Now at 18, Nathan is performing at festivals and venues across the state with a band of his own and has been featured in North Carolina's renowned Our State Magazine as a blues guitar prodigy. Nathan came in 1st Place in the Top 10 Under 20 at the 2021 International Dallas Guitar Festival. Featured today are tracks from his 2018 album I'm Not Alone. Nathan will continue to astound audiences with his incredible talent. An artist to watch. Enjoy the show! tracks "I'm Not Alone" 17:25 "Crossroads" 26:04 "When it comes to talented young people, Nathan Pope is top shelf.  His musical ability and skill level on the guitar is well advanced for someone his age.  His classic blues riffs and edgy rock overtones sound like a veteran guitarist who has been playing for years.  It was an honor to have him on the Carolina Blues Festival stage.  His performance gave the festival a huge wow factor and he received rave reviews from the crowd." - TL Lineberry, Carolina Blues Festival Chair "Sometimes you just "feel" it. You know what I mean: those chill-bumps that move up and down your arms when you hear the blues played so sweetly it hurts? Yup, that feeling. It happened to a whole room of blues fans when we all experienced the talent of young Nathan Pope on a December night at our Christmas Party.  It happened when we knew the person playing was connecting emotionally and mentally to the music.  That is Nathan Pope. Armed with a Goldtop and talent to match, Nathan brought a maturity to his interpretation of blues classics and his originals." -Mary London Szpara, President Charlotte Blues Society "This guy will make you wanna throw your guitar in the trash and take up badminton. Seriously, I had to stop what I was doing and turn around and say who the hell is that? WHOA!! Blew me away! Keep your eye on this cat!!" ~ Dr. Joe, President Natchyo' Grandma's Blues Network  Bio Provided by the Artist Nathan is a young blues guitarist from the heart of North Carolina. He received his first guitar at the age of 2 and was teaching himself to play by the age of 7. He gives credit to his Grandmother, Doris Powell, for her inspiration and love of music. Nathan spent years going to blues jams where he honed his craft under the mentoring of some of the area's finest musicians. Now at 18, Nathan has been performing at festivals and venues across the state with a band of his own for almost 6 years and has even been featured in NC's renowned Our State Magazine as a blues guitar prodigy. For several summers Nathan ventured to Clarksdale, Mississippi for the Pinetop Perkins Foundation Workshop where he studied under the likes of Bob Margolin, Jonn Del Toro Richardson, Victor Wainwright, and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram. In 2016 he represented the Triangle Blues Society in the Youth Showcase at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2018 the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society honored him with their Mike Carr Junior Bluesman of the Year Award. He also released his first CD, I'm Not Alone, in 2018 which showcases his blues-rock roots.  Now in 2021, Nathan has received the tremendous honor of being selected as the 1st place winner of the top 10 guitarists under the age of 20 in the world by the Dallas International Guitar Show.  Read more here.

As anticipation mounts for the big event (no, not the election, The 1st Annual 7Horse Halloween Rock-A-Thon on October 31st) we get the unique opportunity to speak with a musician who's work has deeply inspired us-even though we didn't really know who he was until just before our interview. Guitarist Bob Margolin is a master of the blues in all its forms. Growing up in Boston in the 1950's he was inspired by early rockers like Chuck Berry and Dion. When he discovered the Chicago Blues he would never be the same. Bob got to know members of Muddy Waters' band when his group opened shows for Muddy in Boston. When Muddy fired his guitar player he offered Bob the job. Bob held the spot for almost 7 years, touring the world and appearing on a series of great albums during Muddy's late career resurgence. One of those, “Hard Again” has been a huge inspiration to us. Bob also appeared along side Muddy Waters on the legendary “Last Waltz”, the farewell concert of The Band, filmed by Martin Scorsese at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco in 1976. Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Ringo Starr were also guests on the show. Bob Margolin is a prolific solo artist in his own right which we discovered during an all night “jam session”. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/7HorseNation/support
