Hyvää uutta vuotta Rock Around The Blogista! Jimmy Vivino Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson It had been six long, 4 1/2 COVID years since last I sat down with my old friend, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and long-time musical director for Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Vivino. It was like coming home. Almost the same age, we have many shared (unbeknownst to us at the time) memories of concerts at The Filmore East, Watkins Glen, the glory daze of the NY club scene, and a bounty of mutual friends. Talk about being in one's comfort zone. Jimmy talked growing up in New Jersey, his carpenter trumpet-playing father, his talented brothers, Jerry and Floyd, and how they began and evolved - he talked Conan, Laura Nyro, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen, John Sebastian, Al Kooper, Levon Helm, The Allman Brothers, Albert King, Tom Petty, Prince, Bruno Mars, Michael McDonald, Johnny Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Stevie Wonder, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, John Sebastian, The Dead, The Band, Harry Shearer, Paul Shaffer, whom he credits as his mentor, Leader of the Pack, Broadway, Ronnie Spector, Felix Cavaliere, The Rascals, Frankie Valli, Slash, Sly Stone, The J. Geils Band, Elvis Costello, and the James Brown and Friends Set Fire To The Soul with Aretha, Robert Palmer, and Joe Cocker, that he orchestrated. Incredible stories all around, and this special is available on YouTube… wow - Snuff and I just watched it. Spectacular. We talked about COVID and Jimmy joining Canned Heat, currently touring with them, and Bill Murray, as well as still doing shows with Will Lee and The Fab Faux. His first all-original album, Gonna Be 2 of Those Days, is due to drop in February, signed copies are available for pre-sale at jimmyvmusic.com He treated us to a track to close the show. Life is busy, busy. busy… just the way Jimmy likes it. And so do we who follow and adore him. I so enjoyed every second of this. Jimmy needs to write a book and get all these stories down. He knows and has played with everyone. Such fun! Charlie Overbey, once labeled the “Punk Rock Spy In The House Of Honky Tonk" by none other than Lemmy of Motorhead, has redefined the outlaw ethos of Americana music. That's never been more evident than with the release of his new album, aptly titled In Good Company. A revisit to decades of writing and recording sessions from studios around the world, it is, in effect, the perfect summation of a career that stretches back nearly 30 years, with guest contributors that include such superstars as Nils Lofgren, Marcus King, Jaime Wyatt, Charlie Starr, Rami Jaffee, Jimmy Vivino, Duane Betts, Eddie Spaghetti, Chris Masterson, Danny B Harvey, and Sarah Gayle Meech, it confirms his standing as one of the more important figures in the cow punk movement…and more. A renaissance man of sorts, Charlie's also made his name in the fashion industry with his well-received line of custom hats, Lone Hawk Hats, which finds him as a one man entrepreneur. They've been worn by artists such as Lainey Wilson, members of the Foo Fighters, Sheryl Crow, Marcus King, and Tim McGraw & Faith Hill from the popular television series “1883.”On the episode of My Backstage Pass, Charlie makes a return appearance and speaks with Lee and Billy about his new album, his career in general and his non-stop flow of continuing creativity. Check out Charlie Overbey online at https://charlieoverbey.com Host Lee Zimmerman is a freelance music writer whose articles have appeared in several leading music industry publications. Lee is a former promotions representative for ABC and Capital Records and director of communications for various CBS affiliated television stations. He was co-founder of Television Production Partners, an award-winning branded entertainment company that was nominated for an Oscar, Emmy and won a Peabody Award for Hank Aaron Chasing The Dream. Rick has produced benefit concerts with Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, and Joan Jett. He executive produced the documentary My Old Friend with Paul McCartney and Carl Perkins and Rick and Perkins collaborated on several documentary concerts, benefits, and an album called Go Cat Go which included Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, and Paul Simon. Recently, Rick directed and wrote the docu-concert Do Something and Vote which included performances from Bruce Springsteen, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Black Puma's, Nathaniel Rateliff and Alabama Shakes, and featured many prominent activists fighting for a safer and healthier world. The film A Father's Promise — Rick's latest documentary — tells the inspirational story of one man's journey from devastating tragedy to personal triumph. When his young son Daniel is murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a grief-stricken Mark Barden, a world class guitarist, loses all joy in the music that had defined much of his life. But, in time, Mark rewires himself to become a powerful voice for change, becoming the co-founder of Sandy Hook Promise and a tireless advocate for gun violence prevention. Mark is a father on a mission, and, with the help of his many famous music artist friends, he slowly rediscovers himself, eventually playing and performing the music that had always meant so much to him and his family. In A Father's Promise Rick takes you on Mark's powerful 10-year journey as he gradually finds his way back to music with the help of friends Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Bernie Williams, Jimmy Vivino, the Alternate Routes, and many others. The film impactfully mixes live music performances into the storyline, underlining powerful emotions, as Mark continues to find ways to empower his music with his activism, and vice versa. A Father's Promise finds Mark honoring his son by working for change, playing his music, and building hope for a better tomorrow. In this episode host Michael Shields and Rock Korn discuss the intriguing story of how Rick came to know Mark Barden and began to work with him to tell his inspirational story.. They dig deeply into what A Father's Promise says about the power of music to heal and unite and fight for change in the world while also celebrating Mark's daughter Natalie's journey into activism. They highlight what Mark's work with Sandy Hook Promise aims to accomplish, the inspiring work of the Where Angels Play Project and the Artist For Action movement, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. Sandy Hook Promise has been key in helping pass nonpartisan legislation at the state and federal level through inclusive partnerships, diverse grassroots education, and community mobilization. In addition to his work with Sandy Hook Promise, Mark is an accomplished musician, and on this episode, he talks with Laura about his family and his latest project, a series of concerts with his all-star band featuring Jimmy Vivino of the Conan O'Brien show. The show will tour the country raising funds for grass-roots non-profit organizations fighting gun violence in their communities. The nightclub scene was magical in Chicago's South and West sides in the late 1950s and during that time, white kids from the suburbs were finding The Blues at the end of their radio dials, buying the records, studying the music and traveling down to the clubs to meet and play with their idols! That story is told in the new Bob Sarles film, Born in Chicago. We are joined by musician/bandleader Jimmy Vivino and Blues legend Barry Goldberg who, along with Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield, learned his craft at the feet of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Barry and Jimmy created the film's soundtrack and they are steeped in the history of Chicago Blues and loaded with stories and wisdom about class, race, inter-generational guidance and the joy of sharing and celebrating an art form that contains the power to transform us for the better.Barry and Jimmy give us a full account of the evolution of blues and blues rock from the '50s through today. Barry tells us about sitting in with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf as a teenager and his frenemy relationship with the British invasion acts like The Stones and Eric Clapton who also idolized the Blues greats. He talks about playing in one of our nation's first racially integrated bands, Electric Flag and his experience on stage with Dylan when he “went electric” at the Newport Folk Festival.Jimmy and Barry describe composing the documentary's soundtrack & more and the blues standards that informed their musical choices.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Shiny Happy People: Dugger Family Secrets on Prime and Fair Play on Hulu and Prime.Path Points of Interest:Born in ChicagoBorn in Chicago - IMDBQ&A with Directors in Chicago ReaderBorn in Chicago on FacebookJimmy VivinoJimmy Vivino on WikipediaJimmy Vivino on InstagramJimmy Vivino on FacebookBarry GoldbergBarry Goldberg on WikipediaBarry Goldberg on imdbShiny Happy People: Dugger Family SecretsFair Play - Prime/Hulu

Y no por previsible, por esperado, deja de ser sumamente molesto e irritante. Siempre encuentran alguna pega, algún motivo de crítica, escándalo o preocupación. But todays guest was born there and then made a name for himself in the world of the Blues, playing guitar for the legendary Muddy Waters from 1973 to 1980. “Steady Rollin” Bob Margolin is a walking blues historian so when you get him in a room with our host, it is essentially a blues lesson for all. You will hear the tales of the road from a true blue aficionado. Pinetop Perkins, Johnny Winter, Chuck Berry, Bob Corritore, Jimmy Vivino and even The Band's The Last Waltz are some of the topics. Sit back, pour a pint and listen to an amazing conversation of a true road warrior, who we are proud to claim as a Bostonian.
Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Bob Margolin and Bob CorritoreLongtime friends and heroes in the Blues World, Bob Margolin and Bob Corritore collaborate here on an acoustic duo album for the first time. Dion and his music have long represented a special time and place, reflective of a moment when a song could mean so much. When a singer could sum up what it means to be young, in love and on top of the world. R & B, blues, doo-wop and that first wave of rock all influenced Dion's approach to music. “I Wonder Why” was Dion's first hit with The Belmonts and over the next two years the group earned a reputation not only for topping the charts, but for creating some of the most vital and exciting doo wop music on the American scene. With songs such as “I Wonder Why,” “A Teenager In Love” and “Where or When,” Dion & The Belmonts earned their place in music history. The great music kept coming as Dion ventured out as a solo artist in 1960, racking up a string of #1 hits. Over an incredible four-year run he cut one classic after another from the rollicking “Runaround Sue” to the driving “Lovers Who Wander” to “The Wanderer.” He quickly rose to the top ranks of recording artists. In 1968 Dion shot to the top of the charts once again with “Abraham, Martin and John,” a song that was as much an anthem for that era as his early hits had been for theirs. What followed in the ‘70s and ‘80s was a string of acclaimed LPs, many of which reflected his early interest in roots music. He turned increasingly to folk blues and gospel, again earning a reputation as an innovator. In 1989 Dion entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of the Hall's earliest honorees, he was inducted just one year after the Beatles and Bob Dylan and at the same time as the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding and the Soul Stirrers. In over six decades he has never stopped writing, recording and performing new music. His voice is unmistakable. His music is original and entirely his own. His story is more relevant than ever. This is a story about a father's enduring legacy, about a man who left this world young. While any dad who leaves before his time is worthy of consideration, this dad was world famous. He was the legendary blues harp (harmonica) player, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, vocalist and band leader the late Paul Butterfield.Today we go for a ride through Paul's old home of Woodstock, New York with his son, Gabriel Butterfield. Gabe was just 22 when his father passed. His father's fame was worldwide. The Dalai Lama invited the family to attend a private prayer and chanting to help Paul get to the next realm. My guest today is Greg Vorobiov a.k.a. “Greg V." Greg is a great guitarist with an individual voice who is proof that “tone is in your hands." To see and hear him in action, just watch any of the many videos on You Tube that he did during his time demoing amplifiers and pedals for various companies (before everybody and their brother was doing this) and you'll get an idea of just how gifted a player Greg is. He's one of those guys that can make everything sound great. Not long ago one of my amplifier repair guys said “you know that guy Greg V?” I said sure, for a long time now. He then said jokingly, “man I hate that guy - I bought 2 amps because of his demos!” (Add myself to that list, I just recently bought one too!) Greg has had an amazing career playing with such legends such as Ronnie Montrose (including being on tour with Allan Holdsworth), Double Trouble, Buddy Miles and many others, and we talk about all these experiences. We also talk about his tenure as studio guitarist working on the shows “Baywatch” and playing the theme to “Max Headroom.” His solo record “Tailgate Troubadour” is an excellent place to discover the talents of Greg V., from subtle open chords to melancholy textured drones to screaming fuzz, it's all here and so fun to listen to. Be sure and pick up a copy of this record. For the past 10 years Greg has put down the guitar and replaced it with the camera, channeling the same creativity and passion and swapping out ears for eyes, turning into one of the most gifted photographers that I've ever met. His photographs of Slash, Jimmy Vivino, George Lynch and other musicians and actors and actresses are full proof that Greg's creative spark is more active than ever, even if he doesn't need a guitar to express it. Guitarist/singer/actor/Broadway performer CELISSE (aka Celisse Henderson) has been gravitating to the stage since she was just — no joke — two years old. In addition to playing lead guitar for Lizzo on Saturday Night Live (where she wielded a three-pickup SG much like that of her hero, Sister Rosetta Tharpe), Celisse performed at Gibson’s recent Gibson at the Grove event at NAMM, gracing a bill that included Billy Gibbons, Lzzy Hale, Elliot Easton, Don Felder, Jimmy Vivino, and Slash. She has also worked with Melissa Etheridge, Trey Anastasio, and other stars. On this episode, host JUDE GOLD plugs in with Celisse at the Gibson Showroom in Los Angeles, CA. Presented by GUITAR PLAYER magazine and GUITARPLAYER.COM.
JIMMY VIVINO may be best known as Conan O’Brien’s Fedora-wearing musical director, but — speaking of hats — “late-night guitar hero” is just one of the “hats” Jimmy wears on a regular basis. An in-demand bandleader, Jimmy’s latest gig was last week at the NAMM convention in California, where Gibson hired Jimmy to lead a stellar ensemble backing Slash, Don Felder, Elliot Easton, Celisse, Lzzy Hale, Jared James Nichols, Richie Faulkner, Billy Gibbons, and others. On this episode, Jimmy plugs in with host JUDE GOLD, shares a revered Magic Sam guitar breakdown (as well as licks and approaches behind his concert album, 13 Live), and reflects on adventures spanning everything from the Gibson event and the Conan show to his stints with Hubert Sumlin, Chuck Berry, and other guitar legends. Brought to you by GUITAR PLAYER magazine and GUITARPLAYER.COM

He also headed a host of groups: The Vivino Brothers, The Black Italians, The Jimmy Vivino Band, Jimmy Vivino and the Rekooperators as well as being a member of the Fab Faux, a band dedicated to perpetuating the recorded music of the Beatles through live performances. This hour with Jimmy Vivino will only leave you wanting more and fully appreciate the power and magic of the music. He's on The Paul Leslie Hour and it is an exciting pleasure and honor. Join us!
Two of my favorite subjects are Paul Butterfield, the blues harmonica master who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, as well as Mount Everest, the mountain I climbed for the first time after three attempts, dating back to 1999. Paul Butterfield was inducted into the Rock Hall after three attempts at getting him in. It was through my efforts and those of others in the production of a short documentary that helped Paul and his band gain acceptance. I returned to Everest this year and witnessed firsthand the madness that ensues when too many people try to climb it at the same time. My remarks and thoughts cover not only 2019, but also my experiences on Everest in 2014, during which time a massive avalanche took the lives of 16 sherpa. I successfully climbed Everest in 2016, and returned again to the north side with a crew from National Geographic. The Summits of Modern Man: Mountaineering after the Enlightenment by Peter H. Hansen can be found on Amazon and other major booksellers His panel discussion about the commercialization of Everest for the Boston Museum of Science called Tales From the Top can be found on YouTube. Music is from Paul Butterfield Revisited. The Everest section is by Lobo Loco, found on the free music archive. For more information please contact me at eyesopenproductions.com CORRECTION: Paul Butterfield Revisited band members Jimmy Eppard, Pete Levin and Jim Curtin are from Woodstock, New Yoirk, not Vermont as stated. Also, the film featuring Jim Geiger, who endeavored to become the oldest American to climb Mount Everest, is called Accidental Climber, not Mountaineer as stated.

iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Erich Miller is the FOH Engineer for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, currently based out of South Philly. He’s a graduate of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a degree in Jazz Trumpet performance and a minor in Music Technology. Erich was first introduced to music at the age of five when his parents bought an upright piano and started taking him to piano lessons. A few years later, he discovered the trumpet, and a path was set that led him to pursue music in college. After deciding that playing the trumpet professionally would not in fact be his destiny, Erich began his transition into being a freelance audio engineer. While working full time at a local production company as an audio engineer, he started working at a handful of other small local clubs until finally settling at The Ardmore Music Hall. It was there that he first met Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and after running sound for a few of their shows at Ardmore, the band asked if he was interested in coming on the road. He took the gig, and three years later, he and the band are bringing their infectious brand of Funk to audience’s world wide. Another reason that the Charlatans' stay at the Red Dog is regarded by critics and historians as significant is that, immediately before their first performance at the club, the band members took LSD. As a result, the Charlatans are sometimes called the first acid rock band, although their sound is not representative of the feedback-drenched, improvisational music that would later come to define the sub-genre. And hey.....Dan Hicks was their drummer.Bed Music: Link Wray - The FuzzSet 2Staying in San Fran where the Jefferson Airplane signed to RCA for $40,000. Cotton was in Merrell & The Exiles, then in a band called Blues In A Bottle. He then replaced Ry Cooder in The Magic Band. He was credited as 'Steel appendage' guitarist on Trout Mask Replica. The Fab Faux brings together the talents of five of New York's most respected musicians: Will Lee, Jimmy Vivino, Rich Pagano, Jack Petruzzelli, and Frank Agnello. Performing The Beatles' hits on Apple Records from 1968- 1970 this year, Jack discusses how The Fab Faux first got together (20 years ago!), and the challenges of recreating the timeless music of The Beatles as authentically as possible.

Jimmy Vivino is most visible as the leader of the Basic Cable Band, showing his range, dynamism and tastefully ferocious guitar licks every night alongside Conan O'Brien, who he's played with since his days as a founding member of the Max Weinberg 7 24 years ago. More relevant for today's episode is his other band The Fab Faux, in which0 he and a handful of other impeccable Beatles obsessed musicians recreate the licks and intricacies of the great band of all time's song catalogue. I caught up with Jimmy last week to talk about the Fab Faux and why the Beatles legacy has lasted so long, but first we kicked off comparing notes on the recently release 50th Anniversary version of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which features new stereo mixes of the album by Giles Martin, son of the album's original legendary producer George Martin. Timothy Showalter -- the voice and mind behind Strand of Oaks -- describes himself as a "smiling, sweaty, straight-out-of-a-river wild man" this week, and the vibrant album cover of this year's "Hard Love" encapsulates his aura so well, it nearly jumps off the shelf. His infatuation with vinyl and music in general is contagious and vast, expressing his adoration in this episode for anyone from "Weird Al" Yankovic to Endless Boogie. Today, we also discuss the crazy night that led to the cover photo for "Hard Love," why having his face on his album covers plays into his joy of digging for vinyl, what some of his discography is going for online (and why he won't buy anything on vinyl over the internet), what the best sounding album in his collection is, loaning Basic Cable Band leader Jimmy Vivino his guitar when Strand of Oaks recently played Conan, his obsession with dub music, whether one can truly be present while listening to music alone, and much more! In a break with the regular show format, I'm bringing you a great conversation with legendary guitarist and bandleader Jimmy Vivino, backstage at the Conan, where he leads the Basic Cable Band. We taped this after our podcast on the classic ‘Super Session' album (episode 122 of this show). We talk about the origins and evolution of the Max Weinberg Seven (while Springsteen's E Street Band were on hiatus) and its transformation into the Basic Cable Band, how he's helped fellow “music head” Conan O'Brien develop as a guitarist during their 23 years of friendship, if he and Conan ever compete for rare guitars, how he looks back on the tumultuous split with NBC and how it reflects the changes in the music business. We also chat about country music's transformation into ‘AOR Rock' and his concerns about the future of rock'n'roll, Jimmy tells a great Bill Monroe story from via Sam Bush, we discuss why music fans won't let artists evolve, and why acoustic guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel makes him want to get a job at Starbucks. In all honesty, I didn’t know much about Harvey Citron before our interview. I had met him at a few random events in Woodstock, NY, but we never had an opportunity to get to know each other. And, I knew nothing about his guitars or basses. As I prepped to sit down with him, I quickly picked-up on the care, precision, and thought that he brings to each instrument and to each new design endeavor that he approaches. We had an opportunity to meet at his home, and later, I got to strum a few of Harvey’s guitars. Needless to say, I am now a huge fan! Harvey has been building guitars, basses, and pickups since 1974. In 1975, he co-founded Veillette-Citron, and was a frequent reviewer for Guitar Player, Bass Player, and Guitar World magazines. These are just a few of the players that use Harvey's instruments: Jimmy Vivino, Donovan, John Sebastian, Steve Swallow, and Bo Bice, to name a few.

Guitar legend, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader of Conan's Basic Cable Band - Jimmy Vivino - joins me to discuss the classic album that kicked off the jam band era: Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills' "Super Session" (1968). Jimmy talks about his long friendship and collaborations with Al Kooper, the career paths that led each of the major players to this record, and tells amazing stories from his own storied career in rock'n'roll, including playing bass with Springsteen in the studio, getting chewed out by Chuck Berry on stage mid-song, jamming with a shirtless Keith Richards, when David Bowie played him a song he wrote about Jimmy's brother, how nothing on a Beatles record is ‘un-fucked-with' and why you should always meet your heroes. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007.
