We sat down this week with Jay Levin, President of EQuip Our Kids, to explore the transformative power of emotional intelligence training. As society grapples with rising stress, anxiety, and a digital landscape that both connects and isolates, he discusses how Equip Our Kids is paving a path to mental wellness for children and teens. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone invested in shaping a future where emotional intelligence is the cornerstone of education and personal development. Most would agree our times are as tumultuous and unpredictable, as they are auspicious and potentiating. How we proceed in this era is ultimately a matter of choice and exploring the best ways forward. Over the last decade, mental health in among youth has been declining, in conjunction with increased levels of stress, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and depression. The pandemic years exacerbated feelings of isolation, loneliness, sadness and hopelessness among many youth globally. The prevalence of social media, cellphones, and digital addiction are impacting youth with greater access to national and global challenges whether it be: climate change, gun violence, racial injustice, gun violence or international or socioeconomic crises. According to a survey of tens of thousands of students conducted by University of Michigan researchers, 8th and 10th graders in 2021 spent an average of 3.5 hours daily on social media platforms. The Pew Center also reported that last year, 35% teens said they used social media “almost constantly.” Poor sleep, sedentary, indoor lifestyles, peer pressure, cyberbullying, and diminishing in-person vs. virtual social connections are all impacting the mental health of today's youth for better or worse. How can we nurture emotional intelligence skills that equips youth with adaptability in changing times, fortitude and wellness tools that foster their innate gifts and potential? Jay Levin, President of Equip Our Kids [https://equipourkids.org] joined us to talk about the potential and need for social emotional learning and nurturing emotional intelligence to create greater balance, resiliency and a deep sense of connectedness among youth of all ages. Full disclosure: This was a weird podcast. I had invited my friend and colleague, LA Weekly founder, Jay Levin on the podcast to talk about censorship and the social-emotional learning work he's been doing since leaving journalism. Truth be typed, I was way more interested in talking about the state of journalism, given that Jay had given birth to the coolest alt weekly the country has seen (I say this totally objectively, despite having written for the paper for nine years ;) ), and is now seeing the world through a very different lens than I am. I guess I thought that a 1:1 conversation would snap us out of our various angles of mind control, and allow us to hear and grok one another's perspectives, and forge the way for common ground and healing.Spoiler alert: It didn't go down like this.I am breaking from my usual format of putting the second half of our conversation behind the paywall that is my Locals and Patreon communities for a couple reasons: 1. I think the contrast between the first and second half offers some really valuable insight on the barriers our populace is currently having when it comes to understanding one another.2. Jay was far more interested in talking about his SEL journey than in journalism. I'd toyed with the idea of posting the SEL half of the conversation as Part 1, and the journalism conversation as Part 1. But, I didn't really flow. So, in an effort to honor Jay's time and efforts, I decided to post the whole show for the public, so that the largest possible audience could learn more about his SEL work. That being said, I still encourage you to support me on Locals and/or Patreon, as your support goes a long way in allowing me to continue to put out content. You can pick the platform(s) of your choice here:danikatz.locals.comwww.patreon.com/danikatzLearn more about Jay and his SEL work:https://equipourkids.orgThanks for tuning in, tribe. I'll be back with my usual cast of edge-pushing rebels next week. Pinky swear. Correction: I don't know for a fact that Matt Taibi was kicked off of PayPal, though I do know he's written about journalists being banned from PayPal. Jay leads a nonprofit advocacy campaign, EQuip Our Kids!, whose focus is raising the emotional intelligence of humanity, starting with children and youth. EQuip promotes getting what educators call Social-Emotional Learning curriculum into every pre-K to 12 school. Motivated by the reality that 90% of the public is unaware of the remarkable child, school, family, workplace and society outcomes of this learning, Jay argues it is actually the most likely social movement in the world to raise human consciousness on a mass level out of the paradigm of conflict, pain, inequity and misery – which is inevitable in the historic child development and human relationship training we have inherited. Jay Levin has led six media companies and launched six nonprofits dedicated to social change. He is best known as the founder and former editor-in-chief and CEO of the multiple-award winning LA Weekly, which under his editorial, business and sales/marketing leadership became the largest circulation and most advertising-rich weekly newspaper in the country. Jay is also trained in depth psychology and has worked part-time with helping hundreds of individuals and groups in transforming their lives.
Matt discusses Environmental and other topics with a former Research Engineer at Exxon Mobil and the Founder of LA Weekly who is involved in several media companies and non-profit work.
Matt Matern speaks with Dar-Lon Chang, an engineer who left ExxonMobil for environmental work, highlighting the need to displace fossil fuels with renewables. Matt also speaks with Jay Levin, former LA Weekly owner, who discusses media's role in environmental awareness and the impact of investigative journalism on policy change.

In 1909, 22-year-old Alice Huyler Ramsey set out to become the first woman to drive across the United States. In an era of imperfect cars and atrocious roads, she would have to find her own way and undertake her own repairs across 3,800 miles of rugged, poorly mapped terrain. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow Ramsey on her historic journey. We'll also ponder the limits of free speech and puzzle over some banned candy.
