As the playoffs approach, the Canadiens find themselves in a challenging position, finishing 5th in the Atlantic Division. In contrast, the Washington Capitals are motivated to add another Stanley Cup to Alex Ovechkin's legacy before he retires. After a strong turnaround from last season's last-place finish, they won the Eastern Conference and Metro Division this year but enter the playoffs with a mixed record of 4-7-0 in their last eleven games, raising concerns about their consistency. The Capitals boast a physically dominant roster, featuring players like Tom Wilson and McIlrath, which could give them an edge over the Canadiens.Key players to watch for the Capitals include Logan Thompson, who is expected to return from injury, and backup Charlie Lindgren, who has performed well in his absence. The potential return of Protas, the team's third-highest scorer, is also crucial. Meanwhile, Dylan Strome's impressive 82-point season and Ovechkin's 44 goals highlight the offensive threats Washington poses. With multiple players showcasing offensive depth, the Capitals aim to leverage their strengths against the Canadiens, especially considering their last playoff encounter in 2010 ended with an unexpected elimination for Washington.Ready to snack smarter? Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown to go through everything that went down over the weekend around the NHL. To start off the show, they talked about Cutter Gauthier's much-anticipated return to Philadelphia. The Flyers faithful treated him exactly how you'd expect them to and the players definitely wanted to get their shots in. Frank was in the building and gave his take on it.They then talked about the Eastern playoff picture which is continuing to stay tight. It seems like every week there's a new team stepping up and getting hot and right now, that team is the Detroit Red Wings. Jason gave his thoughts on how they've looked since making their coaching change. They also talked a bit about the Columbus Blue Jackets.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the final playoff spot in the West, which spiralled into an interesting conversation about the future of the St. Louis Blues. He also got their take on the top teams in the Metro Division and the Sabres' chances of moving two young stars before the deadline. As the trade deadline continues to inch closer and closer and after Frank dropped his latest trade targets board last week, the guys decided to play a little deadline matchmaker and pick out a few good landing spots for Frank's top targets.1:20 - Philly welcomes back Gauthier12:30 - The Red Wings heater & the Eastern playoffs17:35 - Blue Jackets deadline plans27:45 - Fill in the Blank41:00 - Canucks Deadline matchmaker47:00 - Landing spots for the top targets1:01:00 - The Oilers & their bluelineWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? With the NHL regular season just a month away, Jason and Frank began their division preview series. Today, they took a look at the Metro Division. They started at the bottom of the division and broke down the Columbus Blue Jackets. It's been a heartbreaking few weeks for the organization and it will be an emotional season following the passing of Johnny Gaudreau. The guys talked about their outlook heading into the season. From there, they talked about the New Jersey Devils, who seem primed to be one of the most improved teams in the NHL coming off a miserable 2023-24 campaign that saw them post just 81 points. Their offseason was busy, but did they do enough to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender? They then moved on to the two teams that reside in Pennsylvania. The two were split on what to expect out of the Philadelphia Flyers, who surprised a lot of people last season. The Penguins are desperately trying to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but is their roster good enough to compete in a strong Eastern Conference?Tyler popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about legendary play-by-play voices, the new PWHL names, and how balanced the divisions are across the NHL.To wrap it up, they talked about the four playoff teams from last season in the Metro. Which one has the best chance of missing this season? Who deserves to be the favourite to win the division? They hit on those questions while breaking down the Islanders, Capitals, Hurricanes, and Rangers.1:35 - Unsigned free agents2:55 - Blue Jackets preview8:50 - New Jersey Devils22:00 - Philadelphia Flyers32:30 - Pittsburgh Penguins41:20 - Buy or Sell49:25 - Washington Capitals55:30 - New York Islanders1:00:40 - Carolina Hurricanes1:05:45 - New York RangersWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens
Inside the latest Locked on CanadiensThe Juraj Slafkovsky hype train is fully out of control now as the 20 year old forward scored his first career NHL hat trick in a blowout win over the Flyers. Somehow though it wasn't the wildest part of the game as Brendan Gallagher, Josh Anderson and a returning Christian Dvorak also piled on goals in a 9-3 win.The game did come with an air of bad news beforehand however, as Arber Xhekaj has been ruled out for the remainder of the season as he undergoes shoulder surgery for a second straight year. While it's on his other shoulder, the hosts discuss if his style of play is already causing him problems in his young career. Also, in better news...Florian Xhekaj has signed his entry level contract and has joined the Laval Rocket! Finally to end the show, does anyone want to actually make the playoffs in the Metro Division right now? Scott and Laura look at what is shaping up to be a hilarious stumble to the finish line for the final wild card spots.
