This episode contains: It's December, it's a big battle getting through the month, and Ben and Steven just can't wait to be done with 2023. Ben is left alone by his family for the afternoon, and did a real long bike ride! All was well and good until he got a flat. Luckily he has friends. Friends with trucks. Steven was out of town hanging out with Devon, and they didn't record a podcast. Instead he and Devon hung out IRL with their D&D group, playing an “artisinal cooperative experience” called Oathsworn. Lots of fun but not an easy game to play. The companion app to the game was narrated by Jeor Mormont himself, James Cosmo. Is Jeor just another way to spell “Jeff?” No, Steven. Ben then talks more about biking, specifically in the rain. Oathsworn: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/251661/oathsworn-deepwood Robot Uprising: OpenAI's reported 'superintelligence' breakthrough is so big it nearly destroyed the company, and ChatGPT. Thanks to our Patron Joe Kohr for suggesting this article! ChatGPT, or as the French say “Cat, I Farted”, is reportedly dealing with a breakthrough towards a generative AI gaining “superintelligence,” or reasoning outside of it's programmed models. As in, it will be no longer “faking it”. Now, there's a new OpenAI research group with the goal of developing safeguards against superintelligence. This all reminds Ben of something he heard on another podcast: where there's a potential for using generative AI to create apps… but what if there's no more productivity apps anymore? Where you ask questions and get data presented to you? The operating system could remove the need for productivity apps, because in 10 years the ways we interact with our phones and computers will be different. Steven runs a website but he doesn't GO to websites. Where does anybody learn things on the net now? Social media? Empire and the East India Trading Company: the first company with shares. https://www.techradar.com/computing/artificial-intelligence/openais-reported-superintelligence-breakthrough-is-so-big-it-nearly-destroyed-the-company-and-chatgpt The podcast about generative AI creating apps: https://www.relay.fm/connected/479 Empire Podcast: https://pod.link/1639561921 Tonight on The Ocho: ‘You didn't just succeed, you Exceled': Sydney man dubbed the ‘Annihilator' wins spreadsheet world championship. You might not have known this, but there's a Microsoft Excel World Championship. Now that your mind has finished exploding, you can watch it yourself. This year was newsworthy not because of it's existence, but because the winner this year was eliminated in the first round. The values Andrew Ngai received from the first round didn't match the answer key… but it turned out the answer key was WRONG! We then continue to yak about EVE Online for a bit. One of the contestants eliminated in the finals thanked his wife, who “never made fun of me, even once, for competing in the Microsoft Excel world championships.” Ben gets made fun of for doing the dishes! https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/dec/15/you-didnt-just-succeed-you-exceled-sydney-man-dubbed-the-annihilator-wins-excel-world-championship Watch the championship here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDGdPE_C9u8&t=288 Science Fiction: Has For All Mankind got too much character drama this season? Steven and Ben disagree. Steven wishes there was something more Mars-y on Mars, like red dust everywhere. You know, science fiction stuff! Netflix got The Batman and got Steven to drop everything and watch it yet again. Amazon got Merry Little Batman and got Ben to drop everything and watch it for the first time. Ben a synopsis of the really adorable film where Batman's son has a Home Alone Batman moment. This Batman has definite Devon energy. Is that enough Christmas Batman for Ben? Not in the slightest. Ben played five hours of Batman: Arkham Origins, the most ignored Arkham game. But… it's actually good? And Ben just shut his eyes and pretended it's not an Arkham game at all, since the voice cast does not include Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. It looks good, for a ten year old game.

Jon Snow has a busy day. He discovers that the wildling host contains giants, and lots of them. He and Tormund discuss the pros and cons of Jon bedding Yigrette. Jon gets attacked by an eagle. Finally, he gets called out on his lie about how many of the Night's Watch were north of the Wall. His day seems to be heading toward wrapping up with a tryst with Yigrette. Simon and Mackelly flip on the Do Not Disturb sign.Chapter Review:Jon Snow and Tormund Giantsbane watch a procession of giants mounted on wooly mammoths ride by. After that, the pair make their way toward the front of the host. On the way, Jon tries in vain to explain to Tormund why he hasn't touched Yigrette, despite her clear advances. The idea of a bastard child being an unwanted result of Jon bedding Yigrette is beyond Tormund's comprehension. They catch up with Yigrette. She and some of the other wildlings treat Jon to a rousing rendition of “The Last of the Giants.” After the song fades, Jon is attacked by an eagle that gouges his face with its talons. The eagle heralds the arrival of Rattleshirt, who announces that he's to take Jon to Mance Rayder.Yigrette accompanies Jon to the top of the First of the First Men, where Mance waits. Along the way, they discover the bodies of dead horses strewn about the slope of the hill. Mance wants Jon to tell him true how many Black Brothers there were and who led them. Jon hesitates but does as commanded. Three hundred men, led by Jeor Mormont. Mance thinks their war is won, if they get to the Wall before Mormont does. But there's still the matter of Jon's lying. Yigrette announces that she and Jon have been intimate under Jon's new cloak. Mance decides to send the love birds along with Jarl and Styr over the Wall. Yigrette tells Jon that doing is better than saying, so Jon needs to find another place for Ghost to sleep tonight.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The Night's Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation. The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy. Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them. Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night's Watch cloak that doesn't seem very old.  Characters/Places/Names/Events:  Night's Watch - The men who guard the Seven Kingdoms against threats from beyond the Wall. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Brotherhood Without Manners - A Game of Thrones reread Podcast

Brotherhood Without Manners, your favorite full spoiler reread podcast of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, is back with another chapter from Storm of Swords. This episode we read Samwell 2 as he makes his return visit to Craster's. Sam attempts to prevent the death of Bannen due to their lack of supplies and men capable of healing. Sam is informed by Edd that they will be leaving at day break, as Craster has reached his limits with the Watch. A feast for crows is held to celebrate the Night's Watch leaving Craster's home. After offending Craster, all bets are off the table as Jeor Mormont sees his last day. As always we read listener emails and give some inductees! The Night's Watch visit Craster's Keep. Craster provides some information, but one of his pregnant daughter-wives recruits Jon to rescue her from her fate. Jon doesn't think they can help. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly's future. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch arrive at Craster's Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster's wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. Mormont admits that the Night's Watch know that he gives the sons up to the woods. But they don't have dominion over him. The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam's ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm. Chapter Review: The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they've found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon. Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He's trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don't appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else. Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand's men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues. Jon decides his future lies south of the wall. He rides out to join Robb in his fight. He's prevented from his oath-breaking by his friends, who ride after him and drag him back. Jeor Mormont announces that the Night's Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what's going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter. Chapter Review: Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam's pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them. As he serves Mormont breakfast, he's plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He's going nowhere. Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb's favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm's real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. The Night's Watch will sortie north of the wall to find Benjen Stark, to gain intel on Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall), and to learn the truth about the Others. Jon gets a pardon and a shiny new sword from Jeor Mormont. His buddies are all excited but Jon is preoccupied with news from the south. Maester Aemon sympathizes and reveals a shocker. Simon and Mackelly continue their watch. Chapter Review: Jon has burned his hand in finally killing off Othor. While he's nursing it, Lord Commander Mormont presents him with a sword. It is the family sword of the Mormonts, it too was burned but the Valyrian steel survived. The new handle replaces the bear with a direwolf. Jon decides to keep the name, Longclaw, as it works as well for a wolf as a bear. Even better news for Jon is that Alliser Thorne has been sent to King's Landing to make the case for more troops, with the help of Jafar Flowers' trusty and un-decomposing hand. Jon is very concerned about the latest rumors from the south: Robb calling the banners and marching south to fight for their father. Jon is summoned to help maester Aemon feed his ravens. The old man reminds Jon of his vows. Jon doesn't think Aemon understands, but the maester reveals that he is Aemon Targaryen so, yeah, he's had a few family setbacks that he has had to endure in his time at the wall.    Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Jon and a delegation from the Night's Watch find the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers near the Godswood. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor's story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. They trace the trouble to Mormont's quarters, where Othor is up and about - and up to no good. Jon and Ghost manage to defeat him with fire. Hopefully regaining the Lord Commander's good graces. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Tyrion's time at Castle Black has come to an end. But before he leaves Jeor Mormont has a big favor to ask of him. One that Tyrion says he'll do, but think it won't do much good. He also spends some time with Jon, forging a final bond between the pair. On top of examining that, the guys delve into some specifics of the Long Night, and Simon explains how a male bodily function is affected by modern technology. Chapter Review: As Tyrion prepares to leave Castle Black, he attends a goodbye feast, where he manages to offend Ser Alliser Thorne and receive a glowing compliment from Maester Aemon. Afterward, Lord Commander Mormont pleads with him to use his influence to muster more resources for the Night's Watch, namely more better trained men and less dregs of society. Mormont knows winter is coming and a terrible darkness is coming with it, and the Night's Watch isn't ready. Tyrion says he'll do what he can, knowing the rest of the realm will simply laugh at him when he does. Later, Tyrion runs into Jon atop the Wall, and Jon asks him to help Bran during his stop in Winterfell. Tyrion has no clue how, but he promises to try.  Characters/Places/Names/Events: Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.Ser Alliser Thorne - Master-at-Arms of the Night's Watch. Responsible for training new recruits.Maester Aemon - The maester of the Night's Watch. "The North Remembers" continues with the two eldest remaining Stark men (not counting the AWOL Benjen). Jon and the Night's Watch have arrived at Craster's Keep, and it turns out that dude is a real incestuous shithead! You hate to see it. He gets a tough lesson from Jeor Mormont about why they're working with such a detestable dude, but it leaves us plenty of room to critique. Further south, Robb and his Northern army are deciding their next best course of action. He sends the Lannister cousin Alton back to King's Landing to give Joffrey & Cersei his terms, which are understandably steep. Then, much to Catelyn's chagrin, he listens to Theon's suggestion of sending him to try to align with his father, Balon Greyjoy. This will not end well. There are some great nuggets in here about Robb and Jon (to a lesser extent) asserting themselves in leadership roles. Tune in. iTunes link Google Play link

Andrew and Manu travel to the Wall in "Baelor" through the eyes of Jon Snow. Since he saved Lord Commander Mormont, the Old Bear gifts him the Valyrian sword Longclaw, a Mormont family heirloom. They talk about the sword and Alliser Thorne, and afterward, Jon learns from Sam that Robb Stark is marching south. Conflicted, Jon is summoned by Maester Aemon, who has a heart-to-heart with him in which he explains his Targaryen roots and the similar hardships he faced watching from the Wall as his house fell to ruin during Robert's Rebellion. Every word from the late Peter Vaughan is chilling and moving, so we try to give this moment its due. It's incredible and chalk full of connections to the story writ large. Let's get to it. Jon talks with Jorah about Jeor Mormont and tries to give him Longclaw back in season 7 (which we also touched upon in our podcast recap of that episode) Helpful video with graphics explaining the Targaryen family tree (Note: The show simplifies it by skipping a generation and making the Mad King the son of Maester Aemon's younger brother Aegon the Unlikely, rather than the grandson) Once more: Manu's appearance on the "Not a Cast" podcast discussing Bran IV Just watch the scene with Maester Aemon and Jon again. "The Pointy End" continues as we pick up with Tyrion & Bronn making their way through the Eyrie. Bronn agrees to serve as Tyrion's well-compensated shield and is put to the test when the hill tribes descend on them. Andrew and Manu briefly explore their history and how Tyrion displays his aptitude for the titular game of thrones in turning Shagga (son of Dolf) into his ally. Up at the Wall, news of Ned's imprisonment has circulated and Thorne goads Jon into trying to attack him, which earns Jon solitary confinement. Ghost helps Jon make up for it by alerting him to danger: a wight attacking Jeor Mormont in his chambers. Jon saves the day! Dany realizes that the process of coming to Westeros isn't going to be as clean as she might've hoped when she witnesses the Dothraki slaughtering the Lhazareen. She does what she can to try to spare some, including the priestess Mirri Maz Duur, and Drogo affirms her decision by fighting his angry subordinate Mago to the death, though he suffers a fateful wound. Merbear and the Maiden Jer - Game of Thrones

Meredith Geddes and Jeremy Baker rewatch Game of Thrones from the beginning. The Stark army arrives at the Twins castle; Catelyn convinces Lord Frey to let them pass and assist them, in exchange for her agreeing to the marriage of Robb and Arya to Frey's children in the future. Robb sacrifices 2,000 soldiers in a confrontation with the Lannister army, to capture Jaime. In a public hearing, Ned confesses to treason and publicly affirms Joffrey is rightful heir. However, rather than sentencing him to the Wall as had been negotiated, the vengeful Joffrey has him decapitated, while Sansa, and Cersei and other counselors object futilely. Sansa watches her father die, and Arya is present in the crowd. At the Wall, Jeor Mormont gives his family sword to Jon in gratitude, and Maester Aemon reveals to Jon that Aemon is a Targaryen. In Essos, Drogo's wound becomes septic and his death imminent. Daenerys convinces a slave woman to use blood magic to save him. The woman tells everyone to leave the tent and stay outside until the spell is over. Daenerys goes into labor, and Jorah brings her into the forbidden tent seeking aid.

Game of Thrones got heated in this week's episode Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken as Sansa's return to Winterfell turned dark. In our discussion on The Cast Beyond the Wall, we delve into "the scene" that sent the internet spinning into a controversial tizzy early this week. Before we tackle the hot button topic, we take a look at some of the episode's more prominent moments including Jorah's reflection on his daddy issues with the Jeor Mormont. Our favorite fallen knight and his dwarven companion Tyrion continue to steal the show on their journey to join Daenerys in Mereen. After the pirate kidnapping, there's only one question left to ask. Where have the Westerosi cock merchants been hiding? After a few weeks away, Arya returns to further explore the depths of the House of Black and White. It turns out, she's not the liar we all thought she was when faced eye to eye with Jaqen H'ghar.  King's Landing continues to crumble at the hands of Cersei Lannister in her crusade to keep Margery from taking the seven kingdoms. Olenna Tyrell returns to even the odds, but that doesn't keep the Queen Mother from dragging Loras's name through the mud in a procedural hearing.  The titular storyline featuring Jamie and Bronn's mission into dorm falls flat no thanks to a few missteps in the fight choreography and rushed storytelling. We break down all the reasons this plot thread has been dragging and offer a few suggestions on how to send it bouncing back.  This episode has been one of the most polarizing yet and we lay down the hammer with our reviews and scene by scene discussion.
