Together, we unravel the complexities of healing, breaking free from patterns, and embracing intimacy in its many forms.  In this podcast episode, Rachel Rae Halder takes us through: -Importance of intimacy, particularly in relation to self-acceptance and personal growth. -The mystical side of Christianity and her experience of the interconnectedness of religion and spirituality. -How she helps leaders, teachers, and healers break free from limiting patterns that hinder their growth and fulfillment. -Her upbringing, experience with sexual abuse, and her profound spiritual awakening. -How her approach to healing combines cognitive understanding, spiritual practices, and somatic therapies to facilitate deep transformation and self-acceptance. -The power of self-acceptance: moving away from the cycle of needing to fix. -The value of seeking to understand healing on different levels. And so much more! Rachel (she/her), commonly known as Rae, currently lives in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in New Mexico, the original home of the Tiwa known presently as Taos. She is a writer, thought leader, coach, and guide in the trauma, somatic, and embodiment fields. Rae is a seasoned practitioner, certified in over 10 different healing modalities, with a decade of experience with some of the most advanced trainings around trauma resolution, sexual liberation, and collective healing under her belt. She has a unique, mystical, and energetic approach to trauma healing + pleasure and a deep-rooted sense of the dark feminine path (a path of being and accepting, as opposed to a mental knowing and rejection). Abstract: Primary cilia (PCs) that are present in most human cells and perform sensory function or signal transduction are lost in many solid tumors. Previously, we identified VDAC1, best known to regulate mitochondrial bioenergetics, to negatively regulate ciliogenesis. Here, we show that downregulation of VDAC1 in pancreatic cancer-derived Panc1 and glioblastoma-derived U-87 cells significantly increased ciliation. Those PCs were remarkably longer than the control cells. Such increased ciliation inhibited cell cycle, which contributed to reduced proliferation of these cells. VDAC1-depletion also led to longer PCs in quiescent RPE1 cells. Therefore, serum-induced PC disassembly was slower in VDAC1-depleted RPE1 cells. Overall, this study reiterates the importance of VDAC1 in modulating tumorigenesis, due to its novel role in regulating PC length and disassembly. Copy rights belong to original authors. Safe AI's open and interoperable solution is giving off-highway equipment owners access to vehicle-agnostic autonomy that previously didn't exist. The significant value of this is demonstrated through gains in increased worksite productivity, safety and cost savings. Enabled by autonomy, each vehicle can add approximately 1,000 additional hours of productivity per year. It's the difference between capital projects being completed in four years instead of five, and significantly under or over budget. This is the beginning of a new era for heavy industry an era that is smarter, safer and more productive than ever. SafeAI is at the forefront of this movement to transition heavy industry to connected and autonomous worksites. In the episode, Bibhrajit will discuss: The interesting work they do at SafeAI, How he has seen the autonomous industry evolve over the past 20 years, Behind the scenes into how they are using AI, Use cases of the benefits they bring to customers, What excites him for the future of SafeAI & Exciting opportunities to join the team at SafeAI

This is: My mistake about the war in Ukraine, published by Ege Erdil on March 25, 2022 on LessWrong. One month ago, I wrote a blog post in which I made the following claim: Ukraine's ability to resist a Russian invasion by itself is even less than Poland's ability to resist a German invasion in 1939, and I don't think anyone doubted this. I'm leaving this claim up in the original post for the record, but here I want to think about what exactly went wrong in my model of the war. I think the broader point I was making in the linked blog post is accurate, but I was overconfident here in a way I should not have been and this is a retrospective of me trying to explain why that happened. When I wrote this blog post, I was fairly confident (over 80%) that the war would end up going well for Russia. It hasn't, and I'm quite surprised by how poorly the Russians have ended up performing. Looking at some past wars through this lens, I think wars going in unexpected ways is actually normal throughout history, and I should have been a lot less confident in my evaluation of how the war would turn out. I think the main source of error in my model here was that I didn't take into account the degree to which Germany mobilized against Poland. Germany invaded Poland with an army of close to 2 million soldiers against Poland's initial defense force of 250 thousand. Poland later got this number up to around 800 thousand by mobilization, but the Germans still had a 2:1 numerical advantage. In contrast, Russia has tried to invade Ukraine with an invasion force of around 200k soldiers, and they are likely outnumbered by the defenders now by at least 2:1. Defending is easier than attacking in war due to many reasons, so the size of the Russian invasion force should have led me to be more skeptical about this comparison with Poland. Another reference class I had in mind was the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. Here the Iraqi defenders outnumbered the coalition forces 2:1 but were handily defeated anyway. I think as a comparison case it was definitely the right decision to keep this in mind, but I didn't properly take into account the degree to which war is an uncertain affair and so I updated too strongly on these few examples without appropriately weighing the counterexamples. For instance, in 1940 Germany invaded France with an invasion force roughly of the same size as the one that they used in Operation Barbarossa. France fell in six weeks while the USSR eventually went on to mobilize more men and drive the Germans back. Furthermore, the reputation of the French army was in fact superior to that of the Soviet army at this time, and having defeated France in six weeks definitely emboldened German leadership to believe the USSR would similarly be easy to defeat. In July 1941, German field marshal Halder even went so far as to claim that "the war against Russia has already been won". Could the rapid collapse of France in contrast with the prolonged resistance and eventual victory of the USSR have been foreseen in advance? I don't think so. There has been plenty of ex post storytelling about this, but I don't think it could have reasonably been foreseen at the time. To a lesser extent, I was also taken in by the mystique and reputation of the Russian army despite believing that I was appropriately skeptical, a mistake I was far from alone in making. Before the war I gave a measly 5% chance to a Winter War scenario, and despite how poor this prediction ended up being I've actually been told that it was "prudent" simply because many others I know were even more overconfident than I was. An instance of this even happened on LessWrong itself, in lsusr's post about the invasion: There is probably going to be a war. Ukraine is probably going to lose. The question is how much, how quickly and on what terms. Eastern...

Jeor Mormont announces that the Night's Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what's going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter. Chapter Review: Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam's pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them. As he serves Mormont breakfast, he's plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He's going nowhere. Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb's favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm's real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. Warriors, Weapons and Challenging Authority

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2020 107:21

The Manstein Plan is one of the names used to describe the war plan of the German Army during the Battle of France in 1940. The original invasion plan was an awkward compromise devised by General Franz Halder, the chief of Oberkommando des Heeres staff (OKH, Army High Command) that satisfied no one. In the final version of the plan, the main effort of the German invasion was made against the Ardennes, which by coincidence, was the weakest part of the Allied line, where the defence was left to second-rate French divisions in the Second Army and the Ninth Army, on the assumption that the difficulty of moving masses of men and equipment would give the French plenty of time to send reinforcements if the area was attacked. The Seventh Army, which had been the most powerful part of the French strategic reserve, had been committed to a rush through Belgium to join with the Dutch Army to the north, in the Breda variant of Plan D, the Allied deployment plan. The Manstein plan has often been called Operation Sichelschnitt, a transliteration of "sickle cut", a catchy expression used after the events by Winston Churchill. After the war, German generals adopted the term, which led to a misunderstanding that this was the official name of the plan or at least of the attack by Army Group A. The German name was Aufmarschanweisung N°4, Fall Gelb (Campaign Instruction No 4, Case Yellow) issued on 24 February 1940 and the manoeuvre through the Ardennes had no name. Five panzer divisions of Panzergruppe von Kleist advanced through the Ardennes, XIX Panzer Corps with three panzer divisions on the southern flank towards Sedan, against the French Second Army and the XLI Panzer Corps with two panzer divisions on the northern flank, towards Monthermé, against the French Ninth Army (General André Corap).[7][b] XV Corps moved through the upper Ardennes towards Dinant, with two panzer divisions, as a flank guard against a counter-attack from the north. From 10 to 11 May, XIX Panzer Corps engaged the two cavalry divisions of the Second Army, surprised them with a far larger force than expected and forced them back. The Ninth Army to the north had also sent its two cavalry divisions forward, which were withdrawn on 12 May, before they met German troops.[8] Corap needed the cavalry divisions to reinforce the defences on the Meuse, because some of the Ninth Army infantry had not arrived. The most advanced German units reached the Meuse in the afternoon; local French commanders thought that the German parties were far ahead of the main body and would wait for it, before trying to cross the river. From 10 May, Allied bombers had been sent to raid northern Belgium to delay the German advance, while the First Army moved up but attacks on the bridges at Maastricht had been costly failures (the 135 Advanced Air Striking Force (AASF) day bombers were reduced to 72 operational aircraft by 12 May). The success of the German invasion surprised everyone; the Germans had hardly dared hope for such a result. Most generals had vehemently opposed the plan as being much too risky; even those supporting it had mainly done so out of desperation because the geostrategic position of Germany seemed so hopeless. Two of the most prominent were Hitler and Halder; Hitler had not liked Halder's original plans and had suggested many alternatives, some of them bearing a resemblance to the Manstein Plan, the closest being a proposal made by him on 25 October 1939. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-kaires/support

The Battle of Stalingrad
Episode 15 - Dust and gore in the Grain Elevator as Hitler fires Army chief General Halder

This episode is about a grain elevator while Adolf Hitler loses his patience once more and fires General Halder. I had the fortune to study American Landscape History at Harvard University with one of the most incredible thinkers of modern times – Professor John Stilgoe. He would present his two hour lectures using hundreds of slides – and one of his fascinating topics was grain elevators. Only countries with food surplus have grain elevators for storage and since then, I've kept a sharp eye on the hundreds in my home country of South Africa. In Stalingrad, the grain elevator was actually the main motif planned for German badges to be issued to the 6th Army upon its fall by its leader, General Paulus. Ah yes, history had other ideas. Elevators are built out of reinforced concrete and in the case of Stalingrad, the elevators survived some of the most intense bombings and shelling of any building in history. Last week I covered the assaults on Mamaev Hill or Kurgan as its known, a site of Tartar graves and rebuilt after the Revolution of 1917 into a park where lovers would gather. IT was also the most bloody few acres of the Stalingrad conflict. It's 300 foot heights meant whomever controlled this hill, controlled the view of the Mighty Volga River. So after the Red Army finally seized control in mid-September, it was more difficult for the Germans to range their artillery and hit the ferries and other craft crossing the Volga. Of course, with material and men being shipped across, mainly at night, it was crucial to try to stop the Russians from resupplying the 62nd and 64th Armies which had been pushed back against the Volga in two areas by the German 6th and 4th Panzer Armies. The fighting on the 14, 15th and 16th September had been brutal, but was just the start of a huge escalation across Stalingrad. In Moscow, US embassy diplomats were reporting that the city was finished and on the evening of the 16th an aide walked into Joseph Stalin's office and placed a transcription down on his desk. It was the text of an intercepted radio message from Berlin which said “Stalingrad has been taken by brilliant German forces. Russia has been cut into two parts, north and south, and will soon collapse in her death throes”. Stalin got up and stood at his window then ordered the aide to put him through to the STAVKA. He then dictated a message for Kruschev and Yeremenko on the West bank of the Volga outside Stalingrad. “Is it true Stalingrad has been captured by the Germans?” he asked “Give a straight and truthful answer…” Little did Stalin know that the scrappy general Rodimtsev who I described last week had arrived in the nick of time with the 295 Division and pushed the Germans back from the Volga and the central station.

This week the Germans launch Operation Blue where Army Group South is supposed to head towards the Caucuses to secure the all-important oil. We heard last week how Adolf Hitler was under the false impression that seizing the oil would also damage Russia's fighting capability – but little did he know that the Soviet Union had vast resources in other regions as I explained. The Upper Volga and Kama area in the Urals and in the northern region of Ukhta also produced oil as well as a narrow belt east of the Caspian sea across the whole south of the Soviet Union. Hitler did not understand this – he was fixated on Baku. In 1942 there were few oil pipelines in use. The main pipeline which ran 1200 miles from Baku to the Black Sea port of Batum had been in existence since the First World War, and other shorter lengths ran from Grozny to Tuapse on the Black Sea as well as Armavir to Rostov and Trudovuya. Hitler had decided on three parallel thrusts to be made all West to East. The first and most northerly would be an armoured attack from the area near Kursk towards the Don River and Voronezh. The tanks would then turn south east after taking the city and move down the west bank of the Don rolling up the enemy. Simultaneously, a second parallel thrust would be made from the area of Kharkov striking at the concentrated Soviet Army forces on the Don, and a third parallel thrust was to be made from lower Don region to join up with the other two German forces in the area of Stalingrad. The city with Stalin's name was mentioned at this point for the first time. The capture of the city was not part of the strategic aim, although it was important. As we'll see, both Halder and von Bock were to oppose Hitler later when he became obsessed by overrunning the city. By the Spring of 1942 it had already become apparent that German resources could not cope with a full-scale offensive on the whole length of the Russian front – from Leningrad in the north to Sebastopol in the South. The campaign in the Caucuses had significant economic considerations. There were coal and iron in the Donetz Basin, oil in the Caucuses and the Volga. Hitler had many other things to worry about in Western Europe. The shock of his attacks in 1939 had worn off and by Autumn 1941 occupied peoples in Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg as well as France were beginning to recover.

This episode we'll join the 6th Army as it began to move inexorably towards the city that bore the name of the Soviet Union's President and which be the grave for almost two million people. But first, we need to take a closer look at General Paulus who was to lead the army to its doom. Unlike other commanders such as Rommel, Guderian, Hoth and Halder, Paulus possessed what historian Anthony Beevor calls an exaggerated respect for the chain of command. He was an oddity in many ways, spending long nights bent over maps with coffee and cigarettes at hand. His hobby was drawing scale-maps of Napoleon's campaign in Russia – something which you'd think would have given him some knowledge about the mistakes the Germans' should avoid making. Apparently it did not. He first made his name as his Chief of Staff starting in 1939 in a relationship that appeared odd to outsiders. Reichenau almost looked the part of a thug, thick set and tough whereas Paulus was tall and very much the officer and a gentleman. With his advanced map reading skills, Paulus was part of the group of Generals who planned Operation Barbarossa and was eventually nominated by Reichenau to take over the control of the 6th Army which he did on New Years day 1942. We heard about that in the last podcast. One of the most memorable events of this battle was the role played by an all-women battalion which the Germans described as a bandit battalion led by a redhead. A senior NCO writing later said “The fighting methods of these female beasts showed itself in treacherous and dangerous ways. They lie concealed in heaps of straw, and shoot us in the back when we pass by..”

Jon befriends a brand new recruit, who is very different from most of the brothers of the Night's Watch. Sam Tarly is a large, soft, admitted coward, and Jon can't understand why he's joined the Black Brothers. When we hear his sad story, we get that he didn't have much of a choice. Chapter Review Jon Snow and the other recruits are training in the armory when in walks a huge boy of 15 dressed in fine clothes. After ridiculing him, Ser Alliser tests the boy's fighting skills, by pitting him against a big strong boy named Halder. The fight ends in seconds with Sam on the ground crying. When Ser Alliser won't let Halder stop beating him, Jon jumps in and defends Sam. It turns into a three-on-three battle that Jon, Pyp, and Grenn win. They learn Sam is the firstborn son of Lord Randyll Tarly, and he tells them he's a coward. Later, Sam tells Jon he didn't have a choice to join the Night's Watch. His father did not care for his soft, gentle nature. He preferred that Sam's younger brother Dickon be his heir. On his 15th nameday, his father told Sam that if he didn't join the Night's Watch, he was going to kill him. Jon then convinces the rest of the boys to go easy on Sam.
