When is Back Pain Serious? Hello everyone! Dr. Jeremy Andrews here, Doctor of Chiropractic at West Chiropractic. Today, I'm going to explain when back pain becomes serious and requires immediate medical attention. As chiropractors, we often manage back pain, but certain red flags signal the need for urgent care. Recognising Serious Back Pain While chiropractors diagnose and treat various spine-related issues, some symptoms indicate that you need to seek immediate medical attention. One critical condition we look for is cauda equina syndrome, which can have serious implications if not treated promptly. Cauda Equina Syndrome This condition occurs when the spinal cord is compressed, usually by a central disc prolapse, affecting the bundle of nerves at the lower end of the spinal cord (the "cauda equina," resembling a horse's tail). Immediate action is necessary to prevent long-term damage. Symptoms of Cauda Equina Syndrome: Bowel or Bladder Incontinence: Inability to control bowel or bladder functions. Saddle Anesthesia: Numbness in the groin, buttocks, and inner thighs. If you experience these symptoms along with back pain and leg pain, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Types of Disc Prolapses Lateral Disc Prolapse: The disc bulges out to the side, causing pain, numbness, and tingling down the leg. This is commonly treated by chiropractors. Central Disc Prolapse: The disc bulges towards the spinal cord, potentially causing cauda equina syndrome. This requires urgent referral to a spinal surgeon. Management of Cauda Equina Syndrome Patients who have had cauda equina syndrome can be managed conservatively after clearance from a spinal specialist. Treatment includes gentle chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, acupuncture, and core stability exercises. Exercises for Stability (Post-Approval) If you've had a disc issue and have been cleared by a medical professional, here are some exercises to help maintain stability: Pelvic Tilts: Sit and rotate your pelvis forward and backward. Ensure your tummy is tucked in and your glutes are activated. Dead Bug Exercise: Lie on your back, keep your core tight. Lower one leg slowly while keeping your back flat. Alternate legs, making sure not to let your back arch. Bird Dog Exercise: Start on your hands and knees, shoulders over wrists. Extend one leg and the opposite arm while keeping your core stable. Alternate sides, focusing on activating the glutes. Important Reminders Only perform these exercises if you've been cleared by your doctor or spinal specialist. If you experience any pain, numbness, or tingling, stop immediately and seek professional advice. Conclusion Recognising serious back pain and knowing when to seek urgent care can prevent long-term complications. If you experience symptoms of cauda equina syndrome, act quickly. For those managing post-disc issue recovery, proper exercises with professional approval can help maintain spinal stability. The news isn't all bad for prospective first home buyers. The Reserve Bank has confirmed major changes to mortgage rules from July, which will prevent most owner-occupiers from borrowing more than six times their pre-tax income. It's also signalling it will keep the Official Cash Rate unchanged at 5.5% for the rest of the year. Key Mortgages broker Jeremy Andrews told Mike Hosking that at the same time, the Reserve Bank is loosening LVR restrictions to allow for more low-deposit lending. He says the changes could actually help many first home buyers. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A major bank has increased its test rate, which is the rate at which it checks that borrowers can afford a loan. ANZ has upped it to 9.1%. That's despite home loan rates sitting around 7% for a two-year fix. Key Mortgages mortgage broker Jeremy Andrews told Kate Hawkesby that it's the first bank to make such a move in decades. He says interest rates have been going up since Covid came along, so test rates have too. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's engineering teams are facing skyrocketing expectations. The products they're designing are more complex than ever, there's constant pressure to raise quality while lowering cost, and it seems like every company is trying to drastically slash time to market so they can get products launched faster. On this episode of Peer Check, Adam and Jeremy share CoLab's origin story and talk about how teams are using CoLab to get results. CEO Jeremy Andrews, the creator of Goose; Fabian Franz, VP of Software Engineering; CTO Narayan Newton, and Managing Director Michael Meyers demonstrate running a Goose Gaggle and discuss how variations on these load test change testing results, and what you can expect from a Gaggle. Our goal is to prove to you that Goose is both the most scalable load testing framework currently available, and the easiest to scale. Narayan is a key member of the Drupal.org infrastructure team, responsible for ensuring the site stays up under load or attack. The idea for Sprout Urban Farms germinated in 2009 when a citizen approached Jeremy Andrews (far right), a community organizer, about helping him start a community garden. After news spread throughout the city about the possibility of a new community garden, others expressed interest in community gardening. To better gauge the interest throughout the city, a like minded group of people decided to hold a community forum on community gardening. Attendees of the forum decided to collectively work on several issues and projects for that year. It was at that most wonderful gathering of over 100 citizens from all corners of our county, that Sprout Urban Farms was born. For nearly two years, Sprout Urban Farms was a completely volunteer-ran, and unfunded organization of really cool people with all kinds of creativity, vision, and the drive to ACT towards accomplishing our goals. In the spring of 2011, the Fair Food Network granted Sprout Urban Farms its first large sum of monies to continue our work in Battle Creek, Michigan. That funding was followed by funding from the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Now with funding, the organizer who helped develop Sprout, became its Executive Director. Under the direction of Mr. Andrews, Sprout has continued to garner regional and national attention for our work in improving food access and making our city that much better. This episode has been sponsored by Hearst Ranch. “If you’re successful at community organizing, the community doesn’t need organizing anymore. Everyone is then a community organizer.” [19:05] — Jeremy Andrews on Greenhorn Radio
