The timestamp on the email from the UVA Basketball SID announcing that the school was cutting ties with Ron Sanchez was 5:00 p.m. ET on the dot. #TeamAFP's Scott German noted that the FlightAware flight-tracking app had the team in the air over the Virginia-North Carolina border as the email was going out. Sanchez didn't learn his fate by email in the air or when the plane landed in Charlottesville, in case you were wondering. Our contacts down in Charlotte described the scene after Virginia's 66-60 loss to Georgia Tech that bounced the ‘Hoos from the ACC Tournament and ended the 2024-2025 season. From what we were told, Sanchez was ushered into a room ahead of his postgame presser for a quick meeting. We don't know who else was in the room, but we can presume it was the athletics director, Carla Williams. Sanchez was later than usual to the presser, and from a look at the video on YouTube, and a read of the transcript, he knew what was up.

You want to blame UVA Football coach Tony Elliott, or UVA Basketball coach Ron Sanchez, or the athletics director, Carla Williams, but the truth is, the problems with UVA Athletics are more than what you think. Our #TeamAFP resident Chicken Little, Scott German, joins me on the podcast for a rousing discussion of all that ails UVA Athletics. Included in our rather depressing chat: We're losing the starting quarterback, Anthony Colandrea, for no good reason. We're keeping the offensive coordinator, Des Kitchings, for no good reason. Is Carla Williams even around in a few months to have to deal with all of this? Do the issues involving UVA Health and the external review of the Nov. 13, 2022, shootings play a role in all of this? Sasha, Carla, and Carolyn discuss how the books approach portraiture through personal exploration while also referencing, recontextualizing and questioning their many influences from the canon of famous works. https://www.carlajwilliams.net https://tbwbooks.com/collections/single-titles/products/tender https://carolyndrake.com https://tbwbooks.com/collections/single-titles/products/men-untitled This podcast is sponsored by picturehouse + thesmalldarkroom. https://phtsdr.com Carla J. Williams Carla J. Williams Carla Williams was born in Los Angeles in 1965 in the front seat of a ‘65 Buick station wagon. She became interested in photography in college receiving her BA in photography from Princeton University and her MA and MFA from the University of New Mexico. During her years in school her self-portraiture was made using mostly Polaroid 4 x 5 and instant 35mm film formats. The immediacy of results allowed her to interact with the images at the time of the sitting rather than wait for the darkroom process, lending both an energy and technical looseness to the photographic finish. These images reflect Williams' creative urgency, her desire to render the likeness in the moment. It would become a signature style in her work. Her professor Emmet Gowin called her graduating thesis show the best thesis show in his thirty-six years of teaching. After graduating, Carla declared her retirement feeling disillusioned with the prospect of becoming an artist. She spent the next decades working independently as a photography historian, writer, and editor. She has occasionally participated in publications and exhibitions, but never pursued a creative career. William's first monograph, Tender (TBW, 2023) is a selection of her self-portraiture made between the years of 1984 and 1999 and kept mostly to herself for more than thirty years. Carolyn Drake Carolyn Drake works on long term photo-based projects seeking to interrogate dominant historical narratives and creatively reimagine them. Her practice embraces collaboration and has in recent years melded photography with sewing, collage, and sculpture. She is interested in collapsing the traditional divide between author and subject, the real and the imaginary, challenging entrenched binaries. Drake was born in California and studied Media/Culture and History in the early 1990s at Brown University. Following her graduation from Brown, in 1994, Drake moved to New York and worked as a interactive designer for many years before departing to engage with the physical world through photography. Between 2007 and 2013, Drake traveled frequently to Central Asia from her base in Istanbul to work on two long term projects. Two Rivers (self-published ,2013) explores the connections between ecology, culture and political power along the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers and earned a 2010 Guggenheim fellowship. Wild Pigeon (self-published, 2014) is an amalgam of photographs, drawings, and embroideries made in collaboration with Uyghurs in western China. This work was presented in a six month solo exhibition at SFMOMA in 2018 and earned the Anamorphosis Book prize. Following this, in Internat (self-published, 2017), Drake worked with young women in an ex Soviet orphanage to create photographs and paintings that point beyond the walls of the institution and its gender expectations. This work was awarded the 2018 HCP fellowship curated by Charlotte Cotton and later exhibited in several festivals in Europe. This project was followed by Knit Club (TBW Books, 2020), which emerged from her collaboration with an enigmatic group of women in Mississippi. Knit Club was shortlisted for the Paris Photo Aperture Book of the Year and Lucie Photo Book Awards and exhibited at McEvoy Foundation in San Francisco and at Yancey Richardson Gallery and ICP in New York. Drake now lives in California and is currently developing self-reflective projects close to home. Her latest work, Isolation Therapy, was exhibited at SFMOMA's show Close to Home: Creativity in Crisis in 2021 and at Yancey Richardson Gallery in 2022. Her work has also been supported by Peter S Reed Foundation, Lightwork, the Do Good Fund, the Lange Taylor prize, Magnum Foundation, the Pulitzer Center, and a Fulbright fellowship. She is a member of Magnum Photos and represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery.

CARLA WILLIAMS was raised in Mobile, Alabama and now resides in Nashville with her husband and four children. She had been singing and recording songs over the last thirteen years, and that included a new project showcasing her apparent vocal similarity to Karen Carpenter. With only a short time to talk, Carla and I spent the time getting acquainted, and I put the spotlight on this beautifully produced album, aptly titled A TRIBUTE TO THE CARPENTERS. We talk about the record's stellar personnel which consists of greats Cliff Richard, Jeff Coffey, Bill Champlin and Steve Lukather. Virginia athletics director Carla Williams announced on Dec. 10, 2021 the hiring of Tony Elliott as the University of Virginia's Fralin Family Head Football Coach. Elliott became the 41st head football coach in the program's history. Elliott spent 11 seasons as an assistant on Dabo Swinney's staff at Clemson. In January of 2021, he was named the program's assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He previously served as the team's co-offensive coordinator (2014-20) and the team's running backs coach (2011-20). At Clemson, Elliott was a part of a 10-season stretch in which the Tigers won 10 or more games. In that span, Clemson won six Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, made four appearances in the College Football Playoff National Championship game and captured national titles in 2016 and 2018. Since Elliott's promotion to co-offensive coordinator prior to the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl, the Tigers posted an 89-10 record and ranked in the top 12 nationally in total offense. Clemson either led or ranked No. 2 in the ACC in total offense in five of his seven seasons as an offensive coordinator. Elliott's 2018 and 2019 offenses were responsible for two of the 22 650-point seasons in major college football history. Elliott was named the Frank Broyles Award recipient as the nation's top assistant coach in 2017. Before transitioning to the tight ends room this year, Elliott was in charge of Clemson's running backs for his first 10 seasons. In that time, he guided  Clemson running back Travis Etienne to one of the most illustrious careers in ACC and college football history, helping him set the NCAA record for most games scoring a touchdown (46) and secure ACC records for career rushing yards (4,952), total touchdowns (78), rushing touchdowns (70) and points (468). As the program's offensive coordinator, Elliott worked with two first-round draft picks at quarterback, including the 2021 first overall pick Trevor Lawrence. From 2015-2020, a Clemson offensive player took home both the ACC's Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year awards  four times. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Elliott spent three seasons at Furman (2008-10) and two at South Carolina State (2006-07) coaching wide receivers at both schools. Prior to his coaching career he worked for Michelin North America for two years. In 2002, Elliott earned his undergraduate degree in industrial engineering from Clemson, where he was a first-team Academic All-ACC selection as well as a CoSIDA Academic District III member. He was also a recipient of an ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship. Under Tommy Bowden, he came to Clemson as a walk-on wide receiver in the fall of 1999 and finished his career with four letters and appeared in 44 games. Swinney was his position coach his senior year (2003) in which he was named a co-captain of a team that finished with a 9-4 record and a No. 22 final ranking by AP and USA Today. Born in Watsonville, Calif., Elliott and his wife, Tamika, have two sons, A.J. and Ace

She put her dreams on hold to raise four kids and grow a successful business.  Well here we go. Carla morphed into the late Karen Carpenter and now she's back at it…and her forthcoming album is a tribute to Karen Carpenter and includes a who's who of the really good Nashville music scene. From Carla's bio: This Mobile, AL mother of four isn't your everyday minivan soccer mom. Carla Williams' unique twist on country bridges high energy angst, throaty vocals and sound reminiscent of Patsy Cline and Karen Carpenter. “Inspiration for great country songs comes from real life experiences,” says Carla. This NSAI and SESAC writer uses everyday occurrences to develop new songs. “I want to feel these songs, put a lot of emotion behind them and I think in order to do that you have to have lived it!”

Our Birthing Person: Carla Williams, MDOther Guests: Kiki Jordan, MidwifeEpisode Description (short/two sentences)What happens when a medical insider opts to give birth outside the hospital? For one, we should all pay attention. In this week's episode, Dr. Carla Williams, a Black Latina OBGYN in New York, shares why she had her first birth at the hospital and never went back for baby number two, and as we spoke days before she was about to give birth to her third child, she was preparing for another home birth. Many people think home births are for the “crunchy granola” crowd but more and more mainstream mamas, including corporate types and even medical professionals have seen the in-hospital experience and choose to find their joy at home. Dr. Williams also shares tips for those considering a home birth and advice to her OB/GYN colleagues on what they can do to improve the birthing experience for Black people. Resources/ReferencesOur Birth Story: Carla Williams, MD, is a board-certified OB/GYN and holistic women's healthcare provider serving patients in Westchester, NY. She attended medical school in the Dominican Republic and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in Bronx, New York. She offers patient-centered care with a dual approach: a focus on nutrition and movement for overall wellness coupled with conventional medical practices as necessary. She is a married mother of two who has personally experienced birth in both the hospital and in-home setting. August 27 – October 18, 2018Kathleen O. Ellis GalleryGallery Talk: Thursday, September 20, 6pmReception: Thursday, September 20, 5-7pmLight Work is pleased to announce Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul: Selections from the Light Work Collection. The exhibition is guest-curated by For Freedoms, a platform for civic engagement, discourse, and direct action for artists in the United States, co-founded in 2016 by former Light Work artists-in-residence Eric Gottesman and Hank Willis Thomas. Since then, For Freedoms has produced exhibitions, town hall meetings, and public art to spur greater participation in civic life. On their motivations for starting For Freedoms, Gottesman states, “Our hope was to spark dialogue about our collective civic responsibility to push for freedom and justice today, as those before us pushed for freedom and justice in their time through peaceful protest and political participation.”Borrowing its title from the Charles Biasiny-Rivera piece of the same name, Be Strong and Do Not Betray Your Soul features more than forty photographs from the Light Work Collection that explore topics of politics, social justice, identity, and visibility. These subjects have remained significant for Light Work and many of the artists we have supported over our forty-five year history. The list of artists includes: Laura Aguilar, George Awde, Karl Baden, Lois Barden and Harry Littell, Claire Beckett, Charles Biasing-Rivera, Samantha Box, Deborah Bright, Chan Chao, Renee Cox, Rose Marie Cromwell, Jen Davis, Jess Dugan, John Edmonds, Amy Elkins, Nereyda Garcia Ferraz, Jennifer Garza-Cuen, Antony Gleaton, Jim Goldberg, David Graham, Mahtab Hussain, Osamu James Nakagawa, Tommy Kha, Pipo Nguyen-Duy, Deana Lawson, Mary Mattingly, Jackie Nickerson, Shelley Niro, Suzanne Opton, Kristine Potter, Ernesto Pujol, Irina Rozovsky, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Kanako Sasaki, Pacifico Silano, Clarissa Sligh, Beuford Smith, Amy Stein, Mila Teshaieva, Brian Ulrich, Ted Wathen, Carrie Mae Weems, Carla Williams, Hank Willis Thomas, Pixy Yijun Liao.In addition to the selections of work on view at Light Work, we have collaborated with For Freedoms to display a series of billboards throughout the city of Syracuse created by internationally-renowned artists Zoe Buckman, Eric Gottesman, Carrie Mae Weems, Spider Martin, and Hank Willis Thomas. These billboards use photography and text to address social issues and our political climate. This exhibition and related programming coincides with The 50 State Initiative, an ambitious new phase of For Freedoms Fall 2018 programming, during the lead-up to the midterm elections. Building off of the existing artistic infrastructure in the United States, For Freedoms has developed a network of artists and institutional partners, including Light Work, who will produce nationwide public art installations, exhibitions, and local community dialogues in order to inject nuanced, artistic thinking into public discourse. Centered around the vital work of artists, these exhibitions, and related projects will model how arts institutions can become civic forums for action.lg.ht/BeStrong—Special thanks to Daylight Blue Mediadaylightblue.comLight Worklightwork.orgMusic: "Bald Eagle" and "American Crow" by Chad CrouchMusic: "Vela Vela" by Blue Dot Sessionssessions.blue See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It profiles 14 women while exploring an untold history of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. “These trailblazers faced down challenges on and off the job: they drove buses over ice roads through snowstorms; wrestled with massive pipes; and operated dangerous valves that put their lives literally in their hands; they also fought union hall red tape, challenged discriminatory practices, and fought for equal pay—and sometimes won”. Carla Williams, raised in Crosby, Minnesota, lived for forty years in Alaska. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from University of Alaska Fairbanks and spent most of her career working in Alaska’s oil and gas industry.

At the NCAA Convention this past January, Patti Phillips caught up with Carla Williams, the director of athletics at the University of Virginia, and the first female African-American athletics director to lead a Power Five Conference institution – which is incredible! During her time as a standout women’s basketball student-athlete at the University of Georgia, Carla volunteered in the athletics department and her career in administration was born. She went on to be an assistant coach at Georgia during one of the most successful periods in women's basketball history (including a run for the national championship!). It’s truly fascinating that Carla knew she wanted to transition to athletic administration while she was coaching and used this platform as an opportunity to learn as much as she could about the many angles of administration, which became a reoccurring theme in Carla’s journey – be a lifelong learner! Carla is an incredibly hard worker, whose advice is "be the best at your job.” This is what we tell all of you, our members, at our summer institutes and at Convention. You have to be a rock star, and Carla absolutely is. Head to womenleadersincollegesports.org for more about us and to become a member! If you’re a sports fan, you’re probably not shy about rooting for your favorite MVPs in the game. You always choose them in your fantasy league and ruthlessly defend their honor against naysayers. But what about everyone else who plays a role in ensuring the game goes off without a hitch? From water boys and girls hustling on the sidelines to concession-stand workers to the refs on the field, there’s so much more that goes into a rockin’ game than just the lauded players. Even in Little League, the game relies on patient coaches and encouraging parents offering orange slices and milk cartons. Today, whether you’re rooting for the home team or calling all the shots, take a moment to give a nod to all those folks behind the scenes making sure all the bases are covered.
