TestGuild Performance Testing and Site Reliability Podcast

Today, I have a special episode for you Beginner Guide to Load Testing with K6 and Meter that features Karime Salmon, one of our top-rated Automation Guild speakers who presented at the 2024 event. Try Bugsnag Now: https://testguild.me/bugsnag In this episode, Karime explains why load testing has shifted from a niche practice to an industry standard, especially after 2020, when the world pivoted to remote work. This session was packed with practical steps, from understanding your environment and data considerations to setting realistic testing baselines and analyzing key performance metrics like response time, error rates, resource utilization, and scalability. By the end of this episode, you'll feel equipped with the necessary knowledge to implement efficient load tests. Karime also delves into the importance of a 'warm-up' phase to simulate real-world traffic and avoid false negatives. This phase is often overlooked but is a key component of effective load testing. By the end of this episode, you'll have a clearer roadmap for implementing efficient and effective load tests, ensuring your applications can handle real-world demands. Join me as we embark on this load-testing expedition—your quest for practical application starts here! If you missed the Automation Guild 2024 event, no worries. In this episode of DC Power Hour, the Battery Blarney duo of George and Allen, along with our resident load bank technician and engineer Josh Fox, delve into the intricacies of load testing and load banks. They emphasize the critical importance of load testing in assessing battery capacity and highlight challenges faced by utilities in allocating manpower for comprehensive testing. The conversation explores IEEE and NERC standards for load testing, including acceptance tests and modified performance tests, and offers practical insights from field experiences. The hosts conclude by discussing strategies like cell jumping and the necessity of adjusting charger voltages, providing valuable tips for professionals in battery maintenance.Episode Highlights:4:59 – A common question I get is "why do we have to do a test for eight hours?"9:41 – When you're recharging the battery, you're shoving maximum current in into it. Depending on the design of the power system, you could be shoving two or three hundred amps into that battery.20:23 – There's also a couple of excellent papers on load testing itself. One by, I'll give a plug here, one by an old friend of mine and yours, Rick Tresler. And Another one by I believe it was Steve Clark on rate adjusted method.22:11 – You're putting yourself at risk because you're working on 120 volts with a lot of current around, and you're putting the system at risk if you get it wrong.49:14 – Are there certain pitfalls or certain things that people need to worry about in order to do a discharge test correctly?

Carter Morgan and Stephanie Wong host Shopify guests Camilo Lopez and Tai Dickerson this week. Shopify streamlines the online purchasing process so merchants and customers can transact with confidence. Camilo and Tai talk in-depth about Shopify's tech stack and why the choices made are so important to performance. Shopify engineers use a combination of Ruby on Rails, MySQL and Google products like Kubernetes. Resiliency systems like active-active configurations, chat ops for quick solutions, and bot and overload protection are worked in. By leveraging these tools and staying flexible in their resiliency efforts, Shopify is able to adjust to new merchant requirements and teams are able to work efficiently. While tech continues to progress and change, the Shopify culture remains a driving force for advancement, Camilo tells us. The company ideals and axioms help steer the brand and dictate which technologies they'll use to solve new and changing client demands. The 2014 outage shaped the future of these cultural ideals, emphasizing the need for quick action and resiliency components like constraints to ensure system safety. Shopify engineers also built enhanced testing tools like Toxiproxy to simulate poor network conditions and account for potential issues. The 2021 Black Friday Cyber Monday shopping season was Shopify's biggest yet. Camilo and Tai describe how Shopify's resiliency culture and intense prep work made the biggest shopping weekend of the year so successful. By offering educational tools and a support network that values good communication, their company culture continues to grow, and Tai tells us how it's not just the software that should be resilient. Building a resilient, flexible company culture is just as important. Camilo talks about Shopify's recent shift to a completely remote work place and the new challenges and opportunities it presents. Camilo Lopez Camilo has worked at Shopify for more than 10 years, he has been an IC and a manager leading teams that take care of Shopify's scalability and resiliency. Tai Dickerson Tai is a production engineer at Shopify, where she shares her passion for resilience engineering with others via paper discussions and as a leader in Shopify's Resiliency SIG. In a previous Tag1 Team Talk, we discussed https://www.tag1consulting.com/blog/how-analyze-goose-load-testing-results-using-new-relic (How to analyze Goose load testing results using New Relic). During testing, a bug was discovered! This team talk goes into detail about what the bug was, how they narrowed down the scope of the problem, and how to fix it.  In this test, http://tag1.com/goose (Goose) found a problem with Drupal's Quick Edit feature. Quick Edit is a staple of content creators, enabling them to make changes directly in content, even if that content is wrapped in blocks or other Drupal layout features. Once again, join Goose creator and CEO of Tag1 Consulting Jeremy Andrews, VP of Software Engineering and Goose contributor Fabian Franz, and Managing Director Michael Meyers as they dig into the results of a Goose Attack, and how this Goose test found something that other analyses did not.
