Niche meetups, conferences, curated dinners, networking - you name it. Everyone's leaning in.Events are a core part of our playbook this year at Exit Five. So far, we've hosted two virtual sessions each month, one large virtual event, one in-person meetup, and we're deep in the weeds planning our Drive conference coming back to Vermont this September.Zuddl helps us run a smarter event strategy - from driving registrations, managing invites, automating comms, reminders, analytics, tracking. Their Salesforce integration also makes it simple to report on pipeline and revenue from events without pulling in ops.On top of that, the differentiator with Zuddl is how their team is insanely good at supporting us. They always go above and beyond for us - and that's how we've been able to keep the momentum going with 12+ events already this year, with plenty more to come.If events are part of your marketing strategy, you need to look at Zuddl to see how companies like Zillow, CrowdStrike, and Iterable are using the top event platform for Business events in 2025. In this episode of The WP Minute+, I sit down with Carrie Dils and Karim Marucchi to talk through FAIR—short for Federated and Independent Repositories—a new package management project launched under the Linux Foundation. If you're in the WordPress space and wondering what FAIR is, why it matters, and how it might change the plugin and theme ecosystem, this is the episode for you.Carrie, one of FAIR's elected co-chairs, walks us through the technical architecture and vision for FAIR, including how it aims to bring more resilience and transparency to how plugins and themes are distributed. Karim adds broader context from his enterprise experience, making the case for why redundancy and federation are vital for WordPress's future. We touch on the practical details of how FAIR works today—including Fastly nodes, AspirePress, and the .3 plugin release—while looking ahead at governance, funding, and how the Linux Foundation structures this initiative.Of course, I have some tough questions: How will FAIR balance governance with innovation? Will it become “just another bureaucracy”? How do we avoid turning this into a divisive issue—FAIR vs. .org? We talk about those tensions and the team's intention for FAIR to extend WordPress, not split it. There's also a good reality check on how plugin moderation, security scanning, and transparency are being improved through this effort.Whether you're running an agency, building WordPress products, or just care about where the ecosystem is heading, this episode gives you a grounded view of what FAIR is—and what it isn't.Great Takeaways & Quotes:"This isn't a fork. This is a failover." — Karim Marucchi"FAIR isn't just about today's plugin distribution problems—it's about creating a foundation for the next 20 years of WordPress.""We're building a system where plugin trust, provenance, and availability don't rely on a single choke point.""Yes, FAIR is about stability, but it's also about discoverability—for both users and developers." — Carrie Dils"We're not trying to replace .org—we've invited .org to join the federation.""Even though you don't see a difference when you update a plugin, that's the point. FAIR is meant to be invisible until you need it."Important URLs Mentioned:FAIR Project GitHub (via fair.pm)Linux Foundation announcement on FAIRAspirePress ★ Support this podcast ★
In this podcast episode, host Michelle Frechette welcomes Carrie Dils, Mika Epstein, and Ryan McCue to discuss their roles in the WordPress community and the new FAIR project. The group explores FAIR's mission to create a federated independent repository system for WordPress plugins and themes, focusing on decentralization, community-driven moderation, inclusive governance, and privacy. They address challenges like supporting premium plugins, reducing environmental impact, and fostering global participation. The episode highlights FAIR's collaborative, open-source approach and invites listeners to get involved through GitHub and community meetings, aiming to shape a more innovative and inclusive WordPress ecosystem.Top Takeaways:FAIR Is Reimagining Plugin Discovery and Trust for WordPress: FAIR is building a more open, decentralized ecosystem for WordPress plugin discovery—empowering both end users and developers. By enabling verified directories and authenticated plugin listings (via methods like DNS verification), FAIR provides an alternative to the limitations of the WordPress.org repo, while increasing transparency, user safety, and trust.Community Participation Is Central to FAIR's Success: The FAIR initiative is deeply community-driven. Contributors are encouraged to get involved through GitHub Discussions, introduce themselves, offer help, or join working groups. The leadership team is intentionally building these groups based on people's skills and availability, rather than predefined roles—making FAIR flexible, inclusive, and open to evolving needs.FAIR Encourages Innovation Outside Traditional WordPress Constraints: The project provides an alternative path for plugin creators who may not want to follow the traditional WordPress.org model (e.g., having to release a free version first). With FAIR, creators can request to be listed in aggregator directories that are more flexible, values-aligned, or niche-focused—fostering innovation and lowering barriers to entry.FAIR Is Still in Early Development—and Actively Growing: While the FAIR plugin and protocol are live (accessible via fair.pm), the ecosystem is in its formative stages. The team is prioritizing essential needs (the “MVP”) and building infrastructure to support future growth in documentation, marketing, design, development, and user testing. They welcome feedback on plugin issues, conflicts, and ideas, encouraging broad experimentation and iteration.Mentioned in the Show:FAIRLinkedIn LearningAwesome MotiveLez Watch TVHuman MadeAspire PressGravatarLinux Foundation ProjectBlueskyWPCCBlack PressMastodon DrupalCourtney RobertsonAutomatticMediaWikiMonster InsightsGravity FormsFastly

Users, threat actors, and the system design all influence—and are influenced by—one another. To design safer systems, we first need to understand the players who operate within those systems. Kelly Shortridge and Josiah Dykstra exemplify this human-centered approach in their work. In this episode we talk about:The vital role of human factors in cyber-resilience—how Josiah and Kelly apply a behavioral-economics mindset every day to design safer, more adaptable systems.Key cognitive biases that undermine incident response (like action bias and opportunity costs) and simple heuristics to counter them. The “sludge” strategy: deliberately introducing friction to attacker workflows to increase time, effort, and financial costs—as Kelly says, “disrupt their economics.”Why moving from a security culture of shame and blame to one of open learning and continuous improvement is essential for true cybersecurity resilience.Kelly Shortridge is VP, Security Products at Fastly, formerly VP of Product Management and Product Strategy at Capsule8. She is the author of Security Chaos Engineering: Sustaining Resilience in Software and Systems.Josiah Dykstra is the owner of Designer Security, human-centered security advocate, cybersecurity researcher, and former Director of Strategic Initiatives at Trail of Bits. He also worked at the NSA as Technical Director, Critical Networks and Systems. Josiah is the author of Cybersecurity Myths and Misconceptions: Avoiding the Hazards and Pitfalls that Derail Us.During this episode, we reference:Josiah Dykstra, Kelly Shortridge, Jamie Met, Douglas Hough, “Sludge for Good: Slowing and Imposing Costs on Cyber Attackers,” arXiv preprint arXiv:2211.16626 (2022).Josiah Dykstra, Kelly Shortridge, Jamie Met, Douglas Hough, “Opportunity Cost of Action Bias in Cybersecurity Incident Response,” Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, 66, Issue 1 (2022): 1116-1120.

Could changing just 30 lines of code in Linux help cut data center energy use?In this episode, we speak to Professor Martin Karsten, professor of computer science at the University of Waterloo, and Joe Domato, distinguished engineer at Fastly, about their work optimizing the Linux kernel, which could have big implications if applied by digital infrastructure operators
Cisco jobs are becoming more strategic as organizations adapt to new cybersecurity regulations, with 93% of companies modifying their policies to address the personal liability of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs). A significant shift is noted, with 41% of organizations involving CISOs in board-level decisions. However, the report from Fastly highlights a concerning lack of clarity regarding accountability during cybersecurity incidents, as nearly half of the organizations surveyed are unsure who holds ultimate responsibility. This evolving landscape emphasizes the need for clearer standards from regulators and a culture that promotes better security practices.Cyber attacks targeting third-party vendors are causing unprecedented financial damage, with a report from Resilience indicating that nearly a quarter of cyber insurance claims last year involved material losses due to these breaches. The average cost of a data breach in 2024 was nearly $4.9 million, with some incidents, like the ransomware attack on UnitedHealth, costing billions. As threat actors shift their focus toward larger organizations for higher payouts, the need for improved cybersecurity measures and third-party risk management becomes increasingly critical for businesses. In the realm of communication, Apple is set to enhance security by introducing end-to-end encryption for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging between iPhone and Android users. This advancement, supported by the GSM Association, aims to reduce vulnerabilities in cross-platform messaging, which is essential for businesses that rely on secure communication with employees and clients. Meanwhile, Nerdio has raised $500 million in funding, increasing its valuation to over $1 billion, as it continues to optimize cloud infrastructure for organizations using Microsoft's Azure services.A recent study by McKinsey challenges the notion that returning to the office enhances productivity, revealing that productivity levels are similar across in-person, remote, and hybrid workers. As companies push for full-time office attendance, the report suggests that executives should focus on fostering collaboration and innovation rather than merely enforcing office mandates. Additionally, communication overload is becoming a significant issue for office workers, with many struggling to focus due to constant connectivity. The findings indicate that businesses need to adopt strategic guidance on AI implementation to enhance workplace efficiency and productivity. In this episode, Surma talks about a presenation-maybe-soon-to-be-a-proposal "JS0", which explores the idea of splitting JavaScript into two specifications: JS0, focusing on security, performance and capabilties, implemented by engines; and JSSugar, focussing on developer productivity and syntactic sugar features implemented by build tools. Notes & Corrections: Yes, I know, people still do have to step through assembler. But I stand behind the essence of my point: The debug symbols for compiled languages feel very reliable. We should be able to at least match that reliability in JavaScript. Guy Bedford currently works at Fastly. You experience it every time you encounter a phone tree, interact with a chatbot, or deal with increasingly longer hold times. The truly shocking fact, the apparent ineptitude of most customer service departments is by design. Really, no Really! That's why they sought out Amas Tenumah, a customer service expert and technologist who has advised DirecTV, Fastly, Wendy's, Teleflora, and Coca-Cola. His work has been featured on NPR, Forbes, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, and other business journals. IN THIS EPISODE: Poor customer care is part of the design! This week, we breakdown all the P&L numbers from the Q1 earnings across OTT platforms and streaming vendors. We highlight that while Disney+ and Hulu had an operating income profit of $47M, the rest of Disney's business didn't fare well, with linear TV operating income slumping 22% and linear network revenue across Disney's portfolio fell 8% (excluding ESPN). We discuss why simply cutting costs isn't enough and that Wall Street wants to see growth, which is why Disney's stock was down 10% after earnings. We detail Vimeo's Q1 earnings but, more importantly, debate what the future holds for the company. While Vimeo expects an operating loss of only about $3 million for full year 2024, their projected revenue guidance means revenue would be down 8% to 4% year over year. We review all the infrastructure numbers from Fastly, Cloudflare and AWS, with Fastly breaking out revenue for the first time based on three services and lowering full year guidance, sending their stock down 27%. We also detail how AWS's growth rate puts it on a $100 billion annual revenue run rate. Also interesting to note was Amazon's CEO saying that AI will drive "tens of billions of dollars" of revenue in the next several years. Finally, we quickly recap news from Paramount, Roku, Altice, Crunchyroll, Fubo and Netskrt.Podcast produced by Security Halt Media
