The Maccabiah Games—sometimes called the Jewish Olympics, since they also happen every four years—are due to start July 12 in Israel. Organizers estimate 10,000 Jewish athletes from around the world will travel to Israel to compete in arenas across Jerusalem, Haifa and Netanya. Among that massive crowd will be a sizable delegation of 600 Canadians, competing in badminton and baseball, karate and cricket, and, yes, of course hockey. Three flagbearers will march in the opening ceremony, all of whom join us today. Brothers Conaire and Nick Taub of Calgary are both playing on the under-18 men's volleyball team, and Molly Tissenbaum, a Toronto native now working in Boston, will be playing goalie for the women's ice hockey team—a sport that's making it's Maccabiah debut this year. Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside are back with another episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe! Chelsey Goldberg joined Mike and Scott on today's episode. They talked about the fight to create a women's professional hockey in league in North America and the progression that it has made. In addition to that, they also dove into Chelsey's hockey career, starting as a child to playing NCAA hockey at Northeastern and her work of pushing women's hockey at the Jewish Olympics this summer. Before Chelsey joined the show, Mike and Scott talked about what went down in the NHL last night, including Patrick Kane's six-point game. Mike is currently in Chicago, so he witnessed Kane's career night, which led to the question, what's your favourite moment you've seen in person? After the guys discussed that, it led to the team that Kane dominated last night and the Anaheim Ducks' future. The Ducks looked like they could be playoff-bound not so long ago, but now it doesn't look so promising. The Ducks have plenty of players that other teams want, so what's the plan? This was a big one for me! I was fortunate enough to spend some time with USA and World Rugby legend Dallen Stanford! Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Dallen relocated to the United States in the early 2000's. He then gained citizenship and went out to represent the USA in World Rugby Sevens from 2007 - 2009. After finishing his international career, Dallen was asked to captain the United States Rugby Team in the 2013 World Maccabiah Games in Israel (often referred to as "The Jewish Olympics), where they won a gold medal in Sevens and a bronze medal in 15s! Dallen currently works as a lead commentator for World Rugby, having been one the lead English commentator for the Rugby World Cup in 2019, the third largest sports tournament in the world. He is also a regular on the World Rugby Sevens Series and Major League Rugby. He has also received multiple awards and recognitions for his efforts to grow rugby in the United States at the grass roots level.
