In this third journal episode, my four most recent guests discussed major goals that they achieved that in hindsight were stepping stones to something greater. In Journal Episode 1, I shared ten practices from my first ten guests and you can read the transcript from that episode on my blog at EverBetterU.com/blog. In Journal Episode 2, I discussed how every single guest has shaped their life by following their interests, and then taking that a step further by teaching what they’ve learned along the way. This continues to be true with my most recent guests Jason Wrobel, Anita Kulkarni, Sarah Mastriani-Levi, and Joleene Moody. This episode highlights how my four most recent guests followed their interests and pursued very specific opportunities to explore and develop their skills. And each one of them discussed how those opportunities helped them get to where they are today. What caused them to pursue these stepping stone experiences? They each talked about an inner drive to explore these pursuits. Jason Wrobel had a very, very specific goal of doing a vegan chef prime time cooking series. He created a vision board that he looked at every day. Because he was thinking about and working towards his larger goal, whenever a steppingstone opportunity came his way, he took it. And you guessed it, one day he got the opportunity to develop the show he had already created in his mind. This show introduced him to a wider audience, many of whom became his followers on YouTube. Today, he shares messages of nutrition, fitness, and other elements of healthy lifestyle with over 35,000 subscribers to his YouTube video blog. Ultimately, his large goal of having a prime time cooking show became a stepping stone to creating his book Eaternity, a cooking and lifestyle book. In this clip, Jason describes how he uses a vision board to move closer to his goals every single day. Anita Kulkarni was in medical school and sought out a program where she learned to do microsurgery. This led to her desire to be a plastic surgeon and while doing a fellowship, she had an experience with a very grateful patient that put her on the path to where she is today. Helping breast cancer patients, including me. Joleene Moody was working for a television station covering high-octane news stories. She enjoyed her work at first but was left with little time or energy to write. And she was felt driven to share the positive messages that were almost bursting out of her. After being hit in the head while covering a story at the courthouse, she decided to quit her job to make her way as a speaker and a writer. Today, she’s a full-time entrepreneur, speaker, coach, and playwright. Here’s Joleene describing her leap! Sarah Mastriani-Levi is not an M.D. but she wanted to understand Chinese medicine and acupuncture. So she applied to, and was accepted at a program where she immersed herself in these practices. And, then she took her training a step further. She ventured up to the Mongolian border to work closely and learn from people who were doing more traditional healing. This knowledge allowed her to step up her practice as a holistic healer in Israel where she practiced for 12 years before returning to the U.S. Today, she’s a holistic health coach, chef, co-author of four best-selling books, and host of the Simple Change Podcast. Leslie Hassler, you’re Your Biz Rules, shares the RULES of social media- giving you the gift of a getting more done in your business and growing it too. Listen to this business coaching moment and find out what you might be missing about using outsourcing as a strategy to grow your business. There are 5 Rules to Using Social Media in Your Business and Today Leslie Hassler goes deep on the how to use social media to grow your business. R = Regulate 1. Regulate the number of channels your are one. The social media channels you select should support an measurble goal AND be one where your businesses' clients will likely be. You also need to regulate your communication so you can be consistent and frequent. It often takes daily interaction with a social media channel to see momentum build. U = Understand 2. Understand not just where your clients or potential clients are, but why they are where they are. Kristen spoke of the 3 Es of Social Media to education, engage and entertain. Your messaging needs to meet the needs of your potential clients, not just drive sales. L = Love It, Let It Go or Leave It 3. If social media isn't your thing, don't force it. You truly need to love being in the social media environment. If you don't love it, it will be obvious to your audience and will repel them versus attracting them. If social media is important to reaching your business goals, then let it go; by delegating to a capable team member or outsource to an expert. Warning: You still need to know what is going on. Don't dissappoint a potential client that talks to you all the time on social media by not knowing who they are. E = Efficiency Rules! 4. Be efficient. Develop a system to put social media posts online. Develop content banks so you are always prepared and use systems like Social Oomph and Edgar to save you time and help you reach your business goals. S = Success Equals Success 5. Build on the success you see. When your audience responds, give them more. Recipes work for you? Who else could you share that information with? Questions get great engagement for you? How could you create a experience every week built around a question to build expectation around your social media. The social media arena is a great platform to test and measure marketing ideas in your business. Thank you for joining us today for this business coaching moment. Summary On this episode of Rhodes to Success I interview Joleene Moody who is an expert in breaking into the world of paid speaking and entrepreneurship. Joleene is a former TV reporter and anchor turned transformational speaker, author, and business consultant. If you've ever been interested in booking paid speaking gigs and landing high paid clients then this podcast is the perfect place to start! Main Questions Asked - What is your opinion on women in business being afraid of hurting people's feelings? - How do you describe profitable relationships? Key Lessons Learned - Building relationships is all about providing value to other people and thus attracting the right relationships to you - When you are growing your business ask yourself ‘who can I help and who can I bring value to?' Doing this will attract people to you - The more authentic you are and less you care about people's feelings the more people will want to be connected to you Business Relationships vs Friendships - Often people want to build business relationships but care more about being liked and not hurting anyone's feelings - As women in business, there is a problem with defining business relationships and friendships - Sometimes women are afraid to engage in conversation as a professional - Business isn't personal. Remember to be professional not focus on becoming BFFs - Women have a fear of ‘rubbing someone the wrong way' and not becoming BFFs this brings up fear that others could speak negatively of you - Building profitable relationships isn't about building friendships Business Communication - You can't read someone's tone through an e-mail message - Maturity is a piece of business evolution everyone needs to move through - If it doesn't matter and its not going to keep you up at night hitting delete on an email is fine - Being cognizant of someone's feelings is different to absorbing them Profitable Relationships - Focus on what will be best for you not on who you want to connect with - Be part of a network where people want each other to genuinely succeed - If you are in a place where the success is just about you then you won't make it (this is the space of manipulation) - The relationships you build are at the core of a passion that ignited what you are moving through to bring you to a higher place - If you want to be successful and profitable in your business then working for free is not going to get you there Links to Resources Mentioned Joleene Moody Interview Connections She Podcasts Jim Palmer
While she learned to tolerate life in front of the camera, her unsatisfying career as a newswoman and an anchor, led her to a dangerous addiction, poor relationships, and low levels of self esteem. She would sometimes sneak away from the TV station early, running away from the job she grew to hate. Her moment of truth (the clarity to leave) came as a literal punch in the face. BAM! And then BOOM to the floor. She was sucker-punched by a victim's family member, whose murder trial she was covering. Away from an environment that had become toxic, she was able to get clean, healthy, and happy. On the show, Joleene Moody talks about leaving the past behind, stepping into the unknown, and how to start a career shift. Understanding and embracing her calling, she brings clarity, confidence and direction to individuals, speaks to and motivates crowds, and transforms audiences with her common sense and often comedic approach. During the Christmas season, 2014, Joleene's first full-length comedy, Visiting Bammy Lewis, will debut at CNY Playhouse in Syracuse, NY.
