Kim & Kezia talk with Kate Bee from The Sober School about what to do once Dry January ends. Growing up in the era of Sex and the City and Bridget Jones, Kate Bee believed her drinking was simply what successful, independent women did. After all, she was a journalist and TV producer for the BBC - drinking after work was how people socialized. Except she was tired of feeling hungover and ashamed about what felt like more drinking than was healthy. When Kate decided to get sober, she was disappointed to find the only real support was through AA. She attended a few meetings, but left feeling like she didn't fit in because she was getting sober before her drinking had negatively impacted her work or relationships. But, there was no middle ground - it seemed like you either didn't have a real problem or you had to be a full-blown alcoholic to get help. That's why Kate founded The Sober School, a coaching program that helps women feel inspired and empowered by their decision to quit drinking. She helps women who are ready to start living their best life learn how to do it without a glass of wine in hand. Kate's course helps women understand why they really drink, so they can change their relationship with alcohol for good. Kate lives near Manchester in the UK. Kate Bee is the founder of The Sober School. Right back from her childhood surrounded by family members who drank, she says that alcohol was the most normalized drug around. When she became an adult, Kate used alcohol to be cool, as well as to help her forget about all the things that she thought were wrong with her.Looking back, she realizes that she'd also used food for comfort and reward... especially sugar. Sugar helped her cope with her feelings and was an end-of-the-day stress buster, she says. And when Kate entered her 20s, she added alcohol to fill those same needs for comfort and stress relief. She'd come home every night and pour herself a glass of wine. Many wines are full of sugar... and Kate recognizes now that she was using alcohol as well as sugar as an emotional crutch. And guess what she ate while she was drinking and when she was hungover?Sugar and junk food!In this episode, Kate and I talk about the close relationship between sugar and alcohol, including how we use them when we have a dependency on them.We also talk about willpower, having fun, our perceptions, social pressure, our beliefs about sugar and/or alcohol, and the freedom of living alcohol free and sugar free.Find Kate Bee's The Sober School here.To get personal guidance, support, and accountability to live your healthier lifestyle and let go of sugar: Join the the After Sugar Club today! To get rid of cravings, especially if you're an intermittent faster, download your 5 tips here. Also check out the Life After Sugar Facebook page, and subscribe to my Instagram account and to the Life After Sugar YouTube channel. To rate and review this podcast: scroll down in your podcast player on your phone and click on the stars. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! This week my guest is Kate from the Sober School About 7 years ago when I was casting about for help with my own drinking problem I stumbled upon a blog by Kate who had already been sober for a couple of years. She was the first person I ever heard suggesting that sobriety could be fun – rather than the grey and miserable place many drinkers imagine it to be. I now know that she was absolutely right of course so it was a real pleasure to chat to Kate about her own drinking story and the work she is doing these days. In this Episode When Kate looks back she realises that at University she used to drink alone in her room – even though there were numerous bars and opportunities to drink with other students! If you enjoy drinking alone then that's a bit of a red flag because it means that you are not using it to “socialise” – you are using it to relax or perhaps to try to calm your anxiety. As you heard Kate cleverly gave up drinking at the tender age of 30 but for many of us the pattern seems to be that we DO use alcohol to socialise in our 20's and 30's and then as we get into our 40's and 50's it often turns more into self medication and that when we enjoy drinking alone. Kate had been worrying about her drinking for years before she actually did anything which is not at all unusual – A recent study highlighted the fact that it takes an average of 11 years between realising that you have a bit of a “problem” and actually doing something about it. This is a shame because for many of use our dependence and our unhappiness worsen during this period. I think it takes such a long time to tackle our drinking for two reasons:- 1. As Kate said society tells us that we are either a “normal” drinker or we are a raging alcoholic –if we are a raging alcoholic we must to go AA – if not then we are fine. We do see articles about “cutting down” which make it sound simple but of course once we've crossed a line with our drinking that becomes impossible. Personally I spent my 11 years of procrastination trying to “cut down” so that I wouldn't have to quit completely! 2. Second reason we resist reaching out for help is that we don't know where to find it. Many of us don't want to go to AA or we try it and it doesn't work – then we just get stuck. But times are changing and the modern recovery movement means there are many online solutions these days. Solutions which work for the millions of people who are not “raging alcoholics” but they are not “normal drinkers” either. Kate had been sober for 8 years and back then there was very little help around. However she discovered a blog – (the blog was Unpickled by Jean McCarthy) and it resonated with her. For the first time she felt that there was someone out there “just like her” – which is exactly how I felt when I discovered Kate's blog. So it's all about “finding your people” – that's the first step in the journey. Her own journey to sobriety began with a blog where she connected with others on the same path and did a 100 day challenge – she felt a “shift” after those 100 days and found herself reflecting on whether she could make sobriety enjoyable – rather than something to be “endured”. We both agreed that doing a Dry January is too short to experience any benefits of sobriety so by gritting our teeth and getting through all we teach ourselves is that sobriety is a miserable place to be! We discussed the value of of writing a Goodbye to Alcohol letter - you can check some out here I loved Kate's Breakthrough story when she was organising her 30th birthday party in early sobriety. Rather than organising a big party she decided to do it completely differently. Accepting the fact that she actually didn't like socialising in big groups she organised several small gatherings – and loved them. She realised that she'd been using alcohol to squeeze herself into what society expected her to be! This happens to SO many of us and in fact a whole book has been written about the subject! Do get hold of a copy of the book Quiet by Susan Cain which explains that roughly 50% of society are introverts but society favours extravert behaviour which leaves many of us using alcohol as a coping mechanism – fascinating! The subtitle of Susans book is:- The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking and she argues that: modern Western culture misunderstands and undervalues the traits and capabilities of introverted people, leading to "a colossal waste of talent, energy, and happiness". So if you ARE an introvert and use alcohol to help you cope then please read this book – it will help you understand yourself – and your power – so much better! Kate explained that the impact of quitting alcohol is deep – we lose our shame, guilt, worry which is SO freeing. We also free up our mental space and start keeping our promises. We agreed that another advantage of dealing with our drinking problem is that we get to know ourselves so much better than people who have never had to deal with addiction issues. Sobriety also means we start reflecting on what we really want out of life:- If we are an introvert and have been using alcohol to cope we may decide to embrace our introvert side and make some lifestyle changes Kate completely changed her lifestyle – she swopped her life in the city as a tv producer for a life in the country running the Sober School which helps other women to stop drinking. What do Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte + Miranda from Sex And The City, Bridget Jones and Olivia Pope on Scandal have in common? Their shows, characters, sets and plot lines romanticize and glamorize alcohol. TV shows and movies have taught all of us from a very young age that drinking is empowering, sophisticated, fun and ‘the thing' that modern, independent women do. Through marketing, media and the culture we have been raised in we're taught that alcohol is both good and necessary and that it should be put on a pedestal. We see drinking as a privilege of adulthood and believe that drinking makes us sophisticated and sexy and also helps us connect and relax. On the flip side we're taught that life without alcohol is less exciting, undesirable or something that only people with a “real problem” with alcohol would choose. And we're convinced that life without drinking is difficult, dull and boring. None of which could be further from the truth. Life without alcohol is fun, exciting, healthy and happy. But those ingrained, subconscious or even unconscious beliefs can hold you back when you're trying to shift your relationship with alcohol. They sabotage your efforts to get healthy and talk about what you're doing in an empowering way. They hold you back from feeling better and draw you back into old habits that keep you stuck. My guest today is Kate Bee, founder of The Sober School, and we're talking about how to STOP romanticizing alcohol and START romanticizing sobriety. Now before anyone starts throwing things at me... thought mastery does NOT imply thought perfection or control. It means understanding the nature of why and how you think so that you are not at the effect of your thoughts, but actually the master who decides what thoughts to heed, and what thoughts to ignore... and... what thoughts to consciously think yourself. In my experience, it seems like a great many of my thoughts arise in and of their own making... like I am a spectator to them, not the author. I am the audience. If that is the case, 1) who am "I" and 2) where do "they" come from? The way I might answer this may differ from how you might, but here's what I would say: 1) I am a spiritual being inhabiting a physical body 2) Thoughts come from a construct of that physical body known as 'the mind.' So, given this understanding, I am not my mind, I have a mind. I am not my thoughts, I have thoughts. Those thoughts originate in the mind, and I observe them. However, I'll be honest, I don't live my life from that understanding. I forget this on a daily basis. Mastering my mindset is a life long journey, and there are several other podcasts that have helped me along the way (I shared a post about 5 of them HERE) The game really changes when you can realize that you are not your thoughts, and this presentation by The Sober School founder Kate Bee will help you understand this at a deep level, and she'll show you ways to wrangle that mind of yours and not be wrangled by it! Kate is an amazing, gentle soul to be with, and super smart and eloquent in her ability to articulate some potentially 'heady material.' She has a online coaching program that helps women to quit drinking or take a break from alcohol. It's a 6 week long class that runs a few times each year and the next one is coming up soon, in July. Drinking alcohol is portrayed as tons of fun, socially acceptable, and the norm. But should it be the norm? Do you struggle with alcohol? Maybe not on a deep level to where it affects your day to day activities, but enough for you to notice some differences in your performance at work and everyday life? Does giving up alcohol mean no more fun in life? Listen to the podcast HERE In this episode I talk with Kate Bee who knew she needed a break from the alcohol. Turning to Alcoholics Anonymous seemed to be her only choice, but she found that she wasn’t in the category of it controlling her life, and found that there were no other groups or organizations dealing with the topic. This inspired Kae B to start her own mission to help people who are in the in between stages of drinking recreationally and an alcoholic. So she started the Sober School. Questions I asked: How did you come to start the sober school? What was your turning point? How do you know when you are drinking too much. Why do we socially drink? How often do we see memes on Facebook about it being "wine o'clock" or how often do we hear references in pop culture about how alcohol is the answer to a stressful day or the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion? Today's guest has made it her mission to change this narrative. Kate Bee is the founder of The Sober School; where she coaches women through early sobriety and helps them navigate alcohol-free living without feeling deprived or miserable. In this episode, Kate talks about her own journey with sobriety, her mission of trying to change the narrative around sobriety, why she tries to work with people before they’ve hit rock bottom, her tip for handling a situation where others are pressuring you to drink with them, what helps her publish her content even when she has doubts or insecurities, and so much more!
On April 6, 2013 journalist Kate Bee quit drinking and created a blog to chronicle her experiences. The first comment came from another sober blogger, UnPickled (Bubble Hour host, Jean!). Now, over four years later, the two sober bloggers will speak for the first time in this episode of The Bubble Hour. Kate will share her story and explain a program she has created to help other women shift to alcohol-free living, The Sober School. http://thesoberschool.com/
Kate Bee grew up in a home that relied on alcohol as a coping mechanism for stress and a means to celebrate everything. Eventually Kate realized she was drinking too much and finding it nearly impossible to stop, but she pressed on and is happily living an alcohol-free lifestyle today and sharing what she has learned with others. Kate shares several great tips that are helpful for overcoming any addiction, including food, such as pushing through fear and the importance of human connection.
