2-9-25 Biblical-Literacy Mark continued the series: Lessor Known Women of the Bible. This week's lesson focused on Job and his daughters. The lesson had three sections: 1. The journey through suffering - Job, a righteous man whom God had blessed with divine provision lost everything, including his children, health, and relationships. God responds to Job's questions by asking questions. 2. The significance of restoration - When Job prayed for his friends, he was restored. He received double portions as God's favor. The three daughters are named, described, celebrated. Names were prophecies in antiquity. -Jemimah. New beginning like dove after flood -Kezia. Valuable and beauty -Keren-happuch True beauty is a divine blessing Points for home: We don't understand suffering Be patient until the end Suffering can transform Listen to Mark teach the wisdom of God exceeds our understanding. True wisdom often begin with humility. We will never understand God fully, but we can understand him truly. Faith first, then recovery. God's restoration exceeds our expectations.

Join us for this inspiring and thought-provoking discussion. Adam and Joe sit down with three members of the Restorative Community Solutions (RCS) team based in San Francisco: Earl Simms (executive director), Kezia "Zia" Martinis (community engagement lead) and Couper Orona (community engagement operations). RCS is a nonprofit founded in 2022, led by a group of dedicated professionals with a deep history of direct service, dedicated to “support[ing] those experiencing the transition back into society from institutional settings, homelessness, prison, jails, and treatment facilities” through peer support. [00:02:27] We first learn about each guest and how their life experiences inform their work as well as [00:05:16] learn more about Restorative Community Solutions's (RCS) mandate. [00:08:35] Adam asks our guests to describe the challenges of doing peer support in a non-profit context. Zia discusses the challenges of representation of all community voices. Earl talks about dynamics of contracting with government agencies in San Francisco with extractive approaches and the risks of policy violence—when policy makers are “10, 000 feet above the problem” they can't “see the nuances and the different intricacies that are happening on the ground.” Couper ties it back to the importance of a trauma-responsive peer support approach. Our hosts ask the team to reflect on their work through the angle of action research. They discuss the importance first of bringing that qualitative part that humanizes and works toward accountability, [00:20:02] “mak[ing] sure that people's solutions are grounded in reality.” RCS's action research question asks, “What is one thing that San Francisco can do to change your life?” [00:23:34] Earl reflects on how participatory action research came into the methodology of their work, and they describe how co-researchers co-create survey questions, help with focus groups, use different tools to synthesize data, and then formulate recommendations to different organizations. [00:28:47] As Couper argues, there needs to be “more guts” in city government and the way things are done because “there's so much uncaring… so much distance between folks.” [00:30:51] Earl discusses balancing different hats and [00:32:20] Zia emphasizes the importance of paying people a living wage and giving folks the agency to vote on policies that directly affect them: “The stipend that I received was more than I had pretty much made in my lifetime” and “I never knew three years ago that I'd be voting on a commission where I have a say in allocating all that proxy money.” [00:35:48] Adam asks the RCS guests “Where can you take this movement? How can you get involved with policy in such a way where your day to day grind is going to be what gets it there?” Jump into this episode to benefit from the nuances of their important insights and the rich variety of concrete examples they share from their research experiences. [00:52:10] Finally the team plugs a few things which we cite below. [00:54:26] RCS is looking for volunteers, “anybody that wants to be boots on the ground or has any kind of compassion towards this work we've done to help support that.” They are looking for lawyers, as well as any students. Just reach out to them! Or, as Couper throws in [00:54:49], “if you have a million dollars laying around or something, that'd be great.”Thanks Earl, Zia and Couper for sharing your work with us.You can subscribe to our podcast on most major podcast distribution platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Guests Kezia Dugdale, former Scottish Labour leader and leading figure in the 2014 Better Together campaign, and Stephen Noon, former SNP strategist, and formerly Chief Strategist for Yes Scotland, join us to discuss their new paper which looks at a new way forward for political discourse and decision making in Scotland. Geoff Aberdeen and Andy Maciver analyse their suggestions as we discuss the current state of Scottish politics, particularly in light of the recent Labour Party conference and the ongoing conversation about independence and devolution. We explore the need for a new approach to political discourse in Scotland, emphasising the importance of shared values and collaboration across party lines. Kezia and Stephen's paper proposes a framework for further devolution, a process for a second independence referendum, and a reevaluation of the fiscal framework to better serve the needs of the Scottish people. Panelists Kat Lipka, Kimberly Holt and Kezia Shine form this panel of Enneagram Twos and brilliantly describe the Type 2 structure. The constant, underlying energy of Enneagram Two consists of giving attention to others' needs and longing to be helpful. While this is one of Type 2's superpowers, it also can be a blind spot for 2's. Kat, Kimberly and Kezia unpack this tension with clarity and vulnerability. Our conversation reveals their hearts of compassion and natural gifts of bringing healing to others. Together, they demonstrate the incredible gifts that Enneagram Twos bring to our world. Most of us in the equine assisted field are familiar with encountering skepticism - the inevitable "aren't you just giving kids pony rides?" attitude that can sometimes stand in the way of the field and its practitioners getting the recognition and therefore funding they deserve. Fortunately, in recent years there has been a massive uptick in the peer reviewed research into equine assisted modalities. Leading this field are Dr Ann Hemingway of Bournemouth University and her assistant researcher Kezia Sullivan. The results of some of their recent studies are frankly astonishing. For example, one study found that domestic violence, after just a 5 day equine intervention, went down a whopping 51% a year after the intervention was done. This points to major brain changes in those undergoing equine assisted interventions of all kinds. The rate that Dr. Hemingway and Ms. Sullivan are publishing is prolific, which is good news for all of us. So listen to what their latest studies have found and are finding - they are providing the kind of research sound bytes that we all need when talking to funders, education authorities, health services and the like. In addition, the two-woman team provides a service crunching data and producing studies on individual equine assisted organizations and methods. If you are looking to get your results proven in a peer reviewed study then you want to listen on. Kim & Kezia talk with Kate Bee from The Sober School about what to do once Dry January ends. Growing up in the era of Sex and the City and Bridget Jones, Kate Bee believed her drinking was simply what successful, independent women did. After all, she was a journalist and TV producer for the BBC - drinking after work was how people socialized. Except she was tired of feeling hungover and ashamed about what felt like more drinking than was healthy. When Kate decided to get sober, she was disappointed to find the only real support was through AA. She attended a few meetings, but left feeling like she didn't fit in because she was getting sober before her drinking had negatively impacted her work or relationships. But, there was no middle ground - it seemed like you either didn't have a real problem or you had to be a full-blown alcoholic to get help. That's why Kate founded The Sober School, a coaching program that helps women feel inspired and empowered by their decision to quit drinking. She helps women who are ready to start living their best life learn how to do it without a glass of wine in hand. Kate's course helps women understand why they really drink, so they can change their relationship with alcohol for good. Kate lives near Manchester in the UK. Kim and Kezia chat with Vanessa McDonald, creator of The Best Decision We Ever Made. A former "Mommy Wine Club" president and neighborhood party co-CEO, Vanessa has been alcohol-free since March 16, 2020. Her inspiration for this book simply came from recognizing a need for a similar resource back when she was wrestling her own relationship with alcohol. After joining a non-traditional online recovery support group, Vanessa heard others share their relatable experiences and profound wisdom, and she knew that she too had to make a change. In this judgement-free recovery space, she discovered she wasn't alone and that connection with like-minded individuals was necessary to staying on her alcohol-free path. Vanessa is a busy, adventure-loving mom of four: Landon (13), Layla (12), Parker (10), and Paxton (9). She's an enneagram 7, an Aries, and a loyal Kansas Jayhawks fan. She was born on Good Friday AND Friday the 13th. With a passion for growth and development, Vanessa has over 20 years of change management experience, partnering with senior executives to assist them in the simplification and implementation of complex strategic initiatives. She is recognized for her contagious energy and ability to connect people and ideas. Today Vanessa enjoys her simple, rewarding life in lowa as a full-time consultant, sports mom (now without alcoholic beverages in her Yeti), and a friend to many. Kezia and Kim chat with Hadley Sorensen about her sober journey. All three women found themselves caught on the hamster wheel of drinking by the end, the epitome of being trapped in alcohol addiction. They also were each drowning in the mommy wine culture, duped by the Instagram memes, false advertising and lies of Big Alcohol. Hadley tells the ladies how she faced her truth and came out on the other side. Hadley Sorensen is a mom of 3 boys, a lifelong runner, and a writer working on publishing her first book. Her relationship with alcohol was always toxic. It wasn't about how much or how often she drank, but how she felt when she did. Just over two years ago, she woke up with her last hangover, her heart screaming that sobriety was the right choice. She had no idea that a whole new, beautiful life was about to unfold. Now, she loves to tell her story with the hopes it will reach someone struggling as she was. Kim and Kezia chat with former gray area drinker, Todd Kinney this week, all about his journey and transformation. Todd is an attorney who lives in Omaha, NE with his wife, four kids and two wiener dogs. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, golf, hanging out with his family (when they let him) and spending an unhealthy amount of time and money supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes. He quit drinking in 2019 and considers it the best thing he's ever done for himself and his family. His memoir, I Didn't Believe It Either, is due out in December. Todd was a classic gray area drinker who looked like he had it all together on the outside. But on the inside, he was tormented by his relationship with alcohol. He loved drinking and being the life of the party, yet there was so much about drinking he didn't like: the control it had on him, how it consumed his every thought and how he felt after drinking too much. He spent six years evaluating his relationship with alcohol and employing every moderation hack in the book. Some of them worked, but it was exhausting and the victories were always short lived. By 2019, Todd was growing tired of fighting his internal battle. He was worn down by the constant negotiating and obsessing, and he was sick of the torment, shame and regret. Then in the fall of that year, his wife whispered something into his ear that would end up changing his life forever. He decided to quit drinking. Giving up alcohol was scary and overwhelming. Even though Todd knew it was the right decision, he also thought life without alcohol would be a little dull and boring, a bit like a prison sentence for not being able to “drink like a normal person.” What he discovered, however, was that giving it up was the farthest thing from a prison sentence. I Didn't Believe it Either is the raw, honest, vulnerable and sometimes funny story of Todd's journey to quitting the one thing he thought he couldn't live without and his discovery that sobriety is better than he ever imagined. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kim-kearns/support
Kim and Kezia speak with addictionologist Dr. Evelyn Higgins from Wired for Addiction. Dr. Higgins is an expert in the epidemiology of addiction. If you could identify the brain chemicals that cause alcohol or drug addiction in your brain, then what would be the next step? What if you could start at a young age by creating different habits if you had the scientific knowledge to prepare you to do so? What gets a person to that place of addiction? If you actually knew that you didn't have to stay in that dark place, would you? If you could have had your DNA tested at a young age to see if you were predisposed to substance use disorder, would you have done so? If you knew what lay ahead, what would you have done differently? "Does your DNA predispose you to substance abuse? New research suggests that addiction is a biological condition. How would knowing your risk for alcohol or drug dependency impact your choices? Dr. Evelyn Higgins, CEO & Founder of Wired For Addiction®, is an international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. She believes the way we perceive, treat, and manage mental health and substance use disorders needs to evolve to reflect what we now know about human physiology. Technological advances have given us the genetic tools to identify the biomarkers of addiction. So why aren't we using that knowledge to improve treatment protocols? We can change the lens through which society views addiction by acknowledging its biological components and promoting science-based solutions." Founder and CEO of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. As a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders, and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management, Dr. Higgins has had the honor of advising the U.S. Surgeon General, producing and hosting a Gracie Award winning nationally syndicated health and wellness terrestrial radio program, and serving as a 1996 Olympic Team Doctor and Olympic torch bearer. With 35 years in clinical practice, Dr. Higgins has designated over 16 years to Research and Development in the science of addiction recovery. A TEDx Speaker (her TEDx Talk can be found here), panelist at the 2022 International Society of Substance Use Professionals Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the 2022 International Gambling Conference in Auckland, New Zealand, and a 2021 Nominee for Modern Healthcare's Top 25 Innovators in Healthcare, Dr. Higgins finds herself at the nexus of epigenetics, neuroscience, and addiction. https://www.wiredforaddiction.com/ https://www.ted.com/talks/evelyn_higgins_am_i_wired_for_addiction --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kim-kearns/support
