#147: Last of its kind – Eskdale Mill

Countrystride

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2025 50:41

...in which we venture west to the Eskdale village of Boot to visit the last remaining water cornmill in the Lake District. Guided by Mill manager Kate Hughes, we explore the old gardens – a scene of watery activity, with Willan Beck tumbling over boulders and leats threading through channels to feed three wheels. Here we learn about the long history of milling in Lakeland, where over 2,000 mills harnessed power in their pre-industrial heydey. Moving indoors, we observe the drying room, where peat briquettes, extracted from Burnmoor, were burned to dry barley – a staple part of the Cumbrian diet for generations. Moving into the machine room – noisy with belts, drives, cogs and wheels – we consider the hard-graft life of the miller; of the Corn Laws that made of him a pariah in the hamlet; of the seasonal nature of milling; and of the mill's women folk, employed in communal baking and washing. Outside again, walking through sun-dappled daffodils, we marvel at old mill wheels (each ground for a century or more) and the different stones used on different grains. Finally, Kate chats about her abiding love of Eskdale; of the views from Harter Fell; of the upper Esk pools; and of the vibrant shades of autumn. Lucinda is joined by Kate Hughes, the Chief People Officer at Seven Investment Management (7IM). Kate shares her journey over the past decade at 7IM, detailing the company's significant growth from 170 to over 600 employees and the evolution of its culture. She discusses the importance of establishing a strong organisational culture, engaging with employees to align values, and fostering an inclusive environment. Kate also talks about her approach to HR, which combines strategic thinking with a focus on commercial acumen, and highlights the challenges and successes she has encountered, particularly in promoting gender equality within a traditionally male-dominated industry KEY TAKEAWAYS Open communication and transparency within the organisation foster trust and collaboration. Ensuring that all team members, regardless of their position, have access to the same information and opportunities is vital for a cohesive work environment. Understanding the business's commercial aspects is critical for HR professionals. Decisions should align with business outcomes, and HR should be seen as a valuable partner in achieving organisational goals rather than just a support function. Balancing emotion and logic is important in leadership roles. Knowing when to express emotions and when to remain composed can enhance decision-making and team dynamics. Preparation and clarity on desired outcomes are key to effective communication in challenging situations. Individuals should take ownership of their career paths by setting goals and seeking guidance from experienced colleagues. Proactively engaging in career development can lead to faster growth and a clearer understanding of personal aspirations. BEST MOMENTS "When I joined, as a small company... there aren't always the processes and systems in place. So that was really the first task was sort of managing that with the team." "We realised that the culture that we had... we needed to put more attention on that, is what were the aspects of the culture we wanted to retain?" "What we like is enthusiasm. I don't think you can teach or recreate... there has to be that sort of passion for what they do." Not being a brave person myself, I've been inspired by the bravery of my guests, and this episode features two astonishingly courageous women. The first is Angela Bently, a certified Wim Hof instructor who channels her passion for the cold to support people with their physical, mental and emotional health.Angela works tirelessly to overcome her anxiety to become a beacon and guide to those who want to be brave but need a helping hand.  Bravery can manifest itself in many ways. One of my bravest guests was the artist Kate Hughes, who talked fearlessly of her battle with the depression she suffered after she was prescribed the mini pill after the birth of her second child. There are great spiritual lessons from God's Word about the concept of a lasting legacy. For many of us, we know that if we don't intentionally pass along our beliefs and values to our children, it will be filled by our culture's beliefs and values instead. Today we're going to be talking with mother-daughter duo, Teresa Conlon and Kate Hughes about Family Legacies. They both share examples of traditions and legacy inherited from their own parents which have made tremendous differences in how they have raised their own children.  “I actually inherited a legacy of prayer and I saw the power of it,” said Teresa Teresa shares about the legacy of prayer in her family and how God challenged her when she had Kate. She recalls how easily Kate made friends, but how she was concern about her choice in friends. Teresa's anxiety about Kate's friends led God to convict her about judging those friends challenging her to instead pray for them. Kate also opens up about her own concerns for her children, but how God has constantly reminded her of His goodness and His faithfulness towards her and her family.  “It's also healthy to remember that your children are in the hands of God and that He has them. When you're able to fully surrender your children to the Lord, its huge. You can then parent from hope and love instead of fear,” said Kate Both Teresa and Kate share about aspects of their emotional, social and spiritual legacies and how the Lord has used key building blocks in those areas to create a more wholesome person, mother and friend to their children.  What we chat about Legacy of prayer Emotional legacy Social legacy Spiritual legacy

Understorey's new series "UnSustainable ANZUS?" looks at the ecological dimension of the Australia, New Zealand, United States security treaty signed in 1951, starting with the Vietnam experience. Operation Ranch Hand lasted a decade until 1971, spraying Agent Orange across vast areas of the country. The aim of this herbicidal warfare was to defoliate jungle, removing protective cover from communist insurgents, and also to lay waste to agricultural crops that may have been supporting the Viet Cong in the South. Around 31,000 square kilometres of jungle forests were defoliated, stripping bare the land, leading to massive erosion, and laying waste animal species. The Red Cross of Vietnam estimates that a million people are disabled or have health problems as a result of Agent Orange, although the United States does not accept these figures. But the problem also impacts American veterans, with documented cases of leukemia, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers affecting the lungs, larynx or prostate of veterans. Understorey speaks to Australian remediation specialist Dr Kate Hughes, and Lady Borton, an American Quaker who has lived in Vietnam for fifty years. This is Interhacktives’ latest attempt to persuade you that data journalism can be relatable and human, and this time we’ve teamed up with a powerful ally: Christmas. Christmas is a time of year for turkey, mince pies, stuffing, stockings, trees, treats, presents, and… data? On this week’s Data Day, James Somper and Luke Barratt look through the news to find some of their favourite examples of data-driven Christmas journalism. Luke made his mince pie joke again, but this time you don’t have to wait until the end to hear it. You can read Kate Hughes’ article on the true cost of Christmas here. The Money Editor of the Independent counts up our rising festive spending, and comes up with some eye-popping numbers. http://ind.pn/2i70vKn The financial services company PNC has done what it’s been doing every year for the past 30 years, and calculated how much the presents in the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ would actually cost you. Partridges are cheaper this year, but what about pear trees? http://pnc.co/2i6Y75Z Finally, Anjana Ahuja has a rather more serious story for the Financial Times about the mounting evidence that the vast quantities of alcohol consumed every Christmas are having a very serious effect on our physical health. http://on.ft.com/2i6PqZs Thanks to Podington Bear for our theme song, ‘Am-Trans’.
