The United Nations convenes its Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Belém, Brazil Nov. 10-21, and in this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast we're covering what to expect from COP30. This annual UN summit convenes world leaders to work together on solutions to tackle climate change, and COP30 is known as the "Implementation COP," which means a focus on turning climate commitments into action. To learn more, we sit down on the sidelines of the PRI in Person conference in São Paulo, Brazil, this week with Marcos Neto. Marcos is Assistant Secretary General at the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and Director of UNDP's Bureau of Policy and Programme Support. Marcos explains the big themes he's watching heading into COP30 — including the rising focus on adaptation and resilience; the evolving role of insurance in climate conversations; financing needs; and the climate-nature nexus. He also discusses UNDP's work to help countries develop their Nationally Determined Contributions, which are countries' plans for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement that are updated every five years. Marcos grew up in Belém, and he says his hometown exemplifies the need to strike a balance between climate goals and economic development. "Belém is a great symbol of that — because there is poverty, because there are Indigenous peoples, because there are forests ... agriculture, cattle ranchers," he says. "We need to figure out a way to live with all those aspects." There's just over one week until Climate Week NYC begins Sept. 21, and we're diving into what to expect from the conference in a volatile year for climate action in the US. The week includes more than 900 events across the city hosted by a range of organizations — including The Nest Climate Campus, where the All Things Sustainable podcast will again be an official media partner. Every year, the United Nations holds its annual climate change conference. It's called the “Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP). This year, the 29th annual COP was held on Nov. 11 in the city of Baku, which is the capital of Azerbaijan. However, unlike previous years, many challenges have arisen this year that pose serious problems to the U.N.'s climate agenda. Whether it's the reelection of Donald Trump (and his promise to exit the Paris Climate Accords), western world leaders skipping the conference, or the host nation giving a speech in favor of fossil fuels, it appears that the pendulum is beginning to swing in the other direction. But the U.N. is not taking this lying down. Instead, it has announced a new initiative, called the “The Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience.” Let's go through what this latest initiative is, how it's being implemented, the specific challenges it'll face, and what it'll mean going forward for the countries that are still committed to the U.N.'s climate agenda. The U.N. Climate Change Conference, COP28, delivered positive news around technology, clean energy and methane emissions. But investors should be wary about slower progress in other areas.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Stephen Byrd, Morgan Stanley's Global Head of Sustainability Research. Along with my colleagues, bringing you a variety of perspectives, today I'll discuss some takeaways from the recent UN Climate Change Conference. It's Thursday, December 14th at 10 a.m. in New York. Achieving net zero emissions is a top priority as the world moves into a new phase of climate urgency. Decarbonization, or energy transition, is one of the three big themes Morgan Stanley research has followed closely throughout this year. As we approach the end of 2023. I wanted to give you an update on the space, especially as the U.N. Climate Change Conference or COP 28 just concluded in Dubai. First, there have been multiple announcements from the conference around the issue of decarbonizing the energy sector, which accounts for about three-quarters of total greenhouse gas emissions. The first was a surprisingly broad effort to curb methane gas emissions. Fifty oil and gas producers, accounting for 40% of global oil production, signed an agreement to cut methane emissions to 0.2% by 2030 and to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Methane accounts for 45 to 50% of oil and gas emissions, and the energy sector is responsible for about 40% of human activity methane globally. Important to note, this agreement will be monitored for compliance by three entities, the U.N. International Methane Emissions Observatory, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the International Energy Agency. Second, 118 countries reached an agreement to commit to tripling renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, an action that boosts the global effort to reduce the usage of fossil fuels. A smaller group of countries also agreed to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050. And third, several governments have reached an agreement on the Loss and Damage Startup Fund, designed to provide developing nations with the necessary resources to respond to climate disasters. The fund is especially important because it could alleviate the debt burden of countries that are under-resourced and overexposed to climate events and to improve their climate resiliency. So what do all of these developments mean for the energy transition theme? Overall, our outlook is mixed, and at a global level, we do see challenges on the way to achieving a range of emissions reductions goals. On the positive side, we see many data points indicating advances in energy transition technology and a more rapid scaling up of clean energy deployment. We are also encouraged to see a major focus on reducing methane emissions and a small but potentially growing focus on providing financial support for regions most exposed to climate change risks. On the negative side, however, we see multiple signs that fossil fuel demand is not likely to decline as rapidly as needed to reach a variety of emissions reduction goals. We see persistent challenges across the board, for instance, in raising capital to finance energy transition efforts, especially in emerging markets. This is in part driven by greater weather extremes stressing power grids, as well as a broad geopolitical focus favoring energy security. An example of this dynamic is India. Not only does India depend on coal for over 70% of its national power generation, but it intends to bolster further its coal power generation capacity despite the global efforts to move towards renewable energy, and this is really driven by a focus on energy security. What to expect from COP28, the UN's big climate change conference

Every year we bring you coverage of the ‘Conference of the Parties,' or COP, the annual UN summit that convenes world leaders to work together on solutions to tackle climate change. This year's conference, COP28, takes place in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates starting Nov. 30. In today's episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we're talking about what to expect from the gathering, including what's at stake and what big themes will be discussed. We talk to Saugata Saha, President of S&P Global Commodity Insights. He explains the significance of the first-ever global stocktake that will be discussed and finalized at COP28. The stocktake is a process for countries and stakeholders to assess progress toward meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Saugata also talks about the path to phasedown and phaseout of fossil fuels. And we talk to Dan Feldman, a former ambassador who served as Chief of Staff and Counselor to US Secretary John Kerry when he was appointed the first Special Presidential Envoy for Climate by US President Joe Biden. Dan is now Co-Chair of the ESG and Business & Human Rights practices at law firm Covington & Burling. He explains how the conference will unfold and the different players involved from both the public and the private sector. “We need to have everyone here under the tent,” Dan says. "Everyone, including the private sector, has a really significant role to play."
