Sounding Cinema turns to the musical television episode! Erika Chagdes, Abbie McLaren, Caleb Payne, and Nathan Platte spotlight the unique and often comedic opportunities that arise when a TV series turns into a musical…for just one episode. By comparing “Once More, With Feeling,” the infamous musical episode from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, with “Regional Holiday Music,” Community's glee-ful fiasco, we discover some ways in which TV musicals can teach us a lot about musicals and the episodic format of television itself.  More about the team: Erika Chagdes graduated from the University of Iowa in 2024 with a BA in Cinema. She is excited to pursue a career in filmmaking.   Abbie McLaren is a University of Iowa student with a double major in Cinema and Journalism and Mass Communication (production and design track). After graduating in 2025, she plans to pursue film professionally through work or graduate studies.    Caleb Payne graduated from the University of Iowa in 2024 with a BA in Cinema. He plans to attend a graduate-level studio art program in the future.   Samuel Ross, who provided original music, is a University of Iowa student drawn to both film and music. A Cinema major, Sam also composes, writes film music, and enjoys playing piano and bass. Resources: Kelly Kessler, Broadway in the Box: Television's Lasting Love Affair with the Musical (New York: Oxford University Press, 2020).  Kathryn VanArendonk, “Theorizing the Television Episode,” Narrative 27, no. 1 (2019), 65–82. If you've been in a bookstore lately, you've undoubtedly seen it: A Court of Thorns and Roses, better known as ACOTAR, ruling over the paperback bestsellers with all its sequel pals. These books are behemoths. They're massive. They've sold millions upon millions of copies. They're about faeries. And they're very, very hot. Culture writer (and lifelong fantasy reader) Kathryn VanArendonk joins me to talk all things ACOTAR, from “is the writing bad” and “is that actually an interesting question” to “is Feyre secretly a horrible painter” and “wtf is happening with book four.” The podcast conversation is neatly divided, so you can listen to the first half without spoilers or without any previous knowledge of the books, and the second half (behind the paywall) is more of an ACOTAR book club, where we work through specific questions about plotting, characterization, and Feyre's aforementioned painting skills. And if you want even more ACOTAR content, head over to the Culture Study newsletter for everything I've been thinking about that didn't make its way into this episode. Justified is back, and so is Kathryn VanArendonk to talk about it: vibes versus process, when you can't replace Walton Goggins, what great villains know about themselves, and whether (...sigh) Kentucky was a character in the original. Then we went Around The Dial with The Real Housewives Of Jenna Ly-- er, New York, Project Greenlight, Dennis Quaid's Full Circle coif, and Hack My Home before Tara made the case for a second-season Detroiters episode as a Canon gem. Streaming shows won, Zaslav lost, and "band name, called it!" took on new meaning in a tube-tunes-adjacent Game Time from Rebecca. Curl up with a German Shepherd on steroids, take off that clip-on nose ring, and get comfy for an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS

Ten years ago, Netflix released one of their first-ever streaming shows, "Orange Is the New Black," a frank look at life in a women's prison. The show put Netflix, and streaming, on the map, and introduced audiences to new themes of queerness and gender, as well as stars like Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks, and Natasha Lyonne. Kathryn VanArendonk, Vulture's TV critic, joins us to discuss the show's legacy. Then, we speak with Piper Kerman, whose life story and memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison inspired the television series.

We also ask if Kathryn is into Ted Lasso ending, the return of the flip phone, and more. Sam traces back the evolution of spoilers with Vulture critics Jen Chaney and Kathryn VanArendonk from the days of Charles Dickens to The National Lampoon to ABC's Lost to that very big episode of HBO's Succession. Why do we get so upset about spoilers? How can we embrace them instead? And why did it take Sam a whole second viewing to realize you-know-who was dead the whole time?
