In the latest episode of Widowed AF, join Rosie Gill-Moss as she sits down with Jackie Rees from Glasgow, who shares her unvarnished journey through grief, love, and enduring connections.Jackie recounts a story that begins with an unexpected heart condition that leads her into an emotional labyrinth. We follow her and her husband David, whose life was tragically cut short by a congenital heart defect. Jackie talks candidly about their 23 years together—highlighting their shared passion for rock music, their travels to New York, and the life they beautifully built without children by choice, but full of love nonetheless.Rosie and Jackie discuss intimate moments, including their chance meeting through a Kerang magazine message board and David's touching, albeit unconventional, marriage proposal. But the heart of the episode revolves around the series of medical challenges that David faced, which escalated rapidly, leaving Jackie grappling with their sudden and unpredictable nature. In navigating her life post-David, Jackie shares the small gestures of human kindness that supported her—care packages from friends, a close-knit support group, and the invaluable bond with David's family. Through it all, Jackie paints a balanced picture of grief interwoven with moments of hope, friendship, and the conscious decision to keep living a full life.Listen to Jackie's moving yet triumphant story, reflecting on the realities of widowhood and the unexpected paths it forces one to tread. Her tale is one of resilience and courage, coupled with touching anecdotes that bring a smile amidst tears.Tune in to understand how she navigated the turbulent waters of loss and found new shores to anchor her life upon.Join us, subscribe, and be a part of the community that not only listens but also understands and supports.Connect with Us: Follow us on Instagram @widowedAF Email: theshow at widowedAF.com Web: (https://www.widowedaf.com) Watch on (YouTube)

Great to catch up with the mild mannered young jockey who burst onto racing's big stage with his all the way win on Twilight Payment in the Melbourne Cup last year. Jye is currently resting up after having a plate removed from his left leg- a legacy of his fall at Bendigo four years ago. Jye talks of a recent stay in Brisbane where he won a stakes race and was placed in a couple of features.  The young jockey talks of the riding career of his partner Jessica Payne with special mention of her trip to France where she represented Australia in an apprentice jockey series. Jye recalls the important race meeting which would determine his fate in the Victorian Jockeys premiership. His baby son Oakley was due to arrive on the same day. The twenty six year old reflects on the circumstances leading up to his engagement for Twilight Payment, and takes us through the running of the Melbourne Cup. Jye looks back on childhood days at Koondrook and talks of his parents and siblings. He remembers his fascination with motor bikes and push bikes long before he became hooked on horses. Jye pays tribute to Gerald Egan, the remarkable Mansfield horseman to whom he was apprenticed. He wasn't the first top apprentice to come through the Egan operation. Young McNeil reflects on his first win at Kerang and his first metropolitan success at Sandown on the horse with the bizarre name. Jye acknowledges the support of several high profile stables, and the thrill of his first Gr 1 win in 2019. He mentions another special horse in his career so far. He talks of his ability to ride at a featherweight despite his height. Jye hates the sauna and has found a better way to keep his weight in check. He acknowledges the efforts of his manager and his mentor. This is a refreshing chat with one of the brightest young race riding stars in Australia.

Having been stood up by both co-hosts I was delighted to see John Neale walk through the doors of Network House this week. As we all know, John is always up for a chat, always has a story and is so interesting to listen too so it was a great chat.We also had a call from the CFA to issue reminders that we are into fire restriction season and any lighting of fires on days of total fire ban can result in prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, so we chat about that, and about the dangers of grass fires with Jack and he translates this message into Vietnamese! Yay Jack!We also had a visit from our Federal Member Dr Anne Webster and one of her staffers who shall now be known as 'Cherry Boy' within the walls of Network House, because he turned up with a box of delicious cherries from Ian in Kerang under his wing! It's so nice to be on the media trail of politicians when they're in town. Yes, I nerd out a little bit (I think the kids call it "fan-girling" but whatev!) but things like the State Budget that was handed down this week affect every one of us so we did want to talk about that.We also had some discussions about our free trade deals with China and Indonesia and try to decide whether or not they're worth the paper they're written on.Ali Cupper also made some time for us this week but it was late on Thursday afternoon so it didn't make the cut for this week's regular episode so you're getting a bonus this week as well. In this ‘mini’ (read: no guests) episode of This Must Be the Place Elizabeth visits the Murray River town of Koondrook, once the terminus of the Koondrook-Kerang private tramway. This country tram venture was started by the Shire of Swan Hill 1887, making use of private finance but also of Victorian funding from the “Tramways in Country Districts Act 1886”. While we might reasonably assume that the intention of this latter scheme was to subsidise tramways in middling regional cities, the Koondrook-Kerang venture instead built a 22km long tramway through the countryside to meet the state railway in Kerang. This was a kind of ‘feeder tram’ to connect goods and people to the public railway through to Melbourne. Railway construction in Victoria was at its peak at this period via the so-called “Octopus Acts”. The Kerang-Koondrook tramway ran privately until the 1950s, when it was taken over (or surrendered to?) Victoria Railways. It then continued as a publicly run passenger service and later as transport for school children, until either 1976 or 1981 (reports vary). The 1970s were a peak time for closing down train lines in Victoria and especially those in country areas - reflecting declining fortunes in some places but also improvements in roads. In this mini-installment Elizabeth reports from the quiet centre of Koondrook where there’s an old tram station (train enthusiasts can confirm the actual difference between a tram and a train, because this one looks a lot like an old train station); plus the old reserve for the tramway and some bits of track. Apparently down through the irrigated countryside there’s some more remnants near former tram stops at Yeoburn, Hinksons, Teal Point and Gannawarra. The remnants of the tramway are heritage listed. Elizabeth speculates on what the story means for the historically intermingled declines of small towns and of railways; what we might learn from history in terms of local and private initiatives today; and for how we price and assess transport projects. Also discussed (with herself) are the current local politics of dairy farms, water allocations, sawmills, and the legacy of gaming machine tourism (which was a big thing for border towns up until the 1990s). Plus there’s a visit to the local swimming pool (Koondrook still has a community-run pool). If Elizabeth were a real journalist she’d find some people who used to catch the country tram to school etc. and interview them – next time. There may well be a next time as Koondrook is very nice to visit – big trees, river, sculptures, walks, old trams, a nice pub, pool. You can’t get the tram there but you can, if so inclined, like Elizabeth, get the Vline bus (it’s the Barmah bus – not to be confused with the Barham bus even though they leave around the same time and let’s be honest they sound the same). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerang%E2%8…oondrook_Tramway www.slv.vic.gov.au/pictoria/gid/slv-pic-aab45791 www.victorianplaces.com.au/koondrook
