Saskia & Thijs
This week on Undr The Cosh, we've got a guest with one of the roughest upbringings we've ever heard. Charlie Oatway was raised in a family on the run from the police, under protection from the Kray twins. Despite being surrounded by crime, Charlie managed to drag himself out of that life and carve out a career in football. But it wasn't without setbacks. He had his own stint in prison, which nearly ended his football career, if it weren't for a lucky encounter with a guard who just happened to have played under Micky Adams. Fast forward to his time at Brighton, Charlie shares the chaos: starting a 40-man brawl, stealing Razor Ruddock's car, the infamous D-baggings, and delivering one of the best impressions we've ever heard. After retirement, Charlie moved into football coaching, working alongside Gus Poyet at Sunderland, Real Betis, and Shanghai Shenhua, where he crossed paths with Carlos Tevez. And if you thought it was wild scenes at the City Ground last weekend, wait until you hear about the time Charlie was coaching for POAK and the Greek chairman ran onto the pitch with a gun.

The Kray twins Ronnie and Reggie, and their lesser known brother Charlie, ran the streets of London's East End in the 1960s — and they took quite a bit of inspiration from their American organized crime counterparts. Ronnie and Reggie Kray, are arguably the most infamous criminals in London's gangster history. The Kray Twins weren't the type to keep a low profile, they were known for everything from armed robberies to arson to pinning a man to the floor by his neck with a knife, all while hanging and working with politicians and celebrities. But the two had a lot of demons and ultimately became their own downfall. So let's get into the quick rise and fall of two of London's most notorious gangsters. Nemone Lethbridge is a barrister who was called to the bar in 1956. One of very few female barristers working at the time, she encountered misogyny and was one of the trailblazers for women working in the legal profession who followed behind her. At her first Chambers, she wasn't allowed to share a toilet with her male colleagues and had to use the facilities in a nearby café. It was hard for her to find work and for some time she represented the Kray twins. After her marriage to a writer, and former convicted criminal was revealed, she was forced to leave the legal profession and they moved to Greece for a number of years where both of them had careers as writers having their work filmed for the BBC. Nemone returned to the Bar in 1981 and continues to do pro bono work at 92 years old. In this episode, Tom and Simon engage in a dynamic conversation spanning continents and intriguing topics. Simon begins by sharing his unexpected gym visit in Malaysia, a stark contrast to Tom's chilly day in Scotland. The discussion shifts to Tom's upcoming book, 'The Bombing of Edinburgh and Leith, 1939-1942,' exploring historical crime scene photography and justice. They delve into the clever, yet ultimately flawed, 1973 casino scam in France, reflecting on the enduring appeal of sophisticated criminal schemes. The notorious activities of Arthur Thompson, a violent Glasgow criminal, spark a candid discussion on police informants and media glorification of criminals. They compare Thompson's operations to the infamous Kray twins, highlighting the complex relationships between criminals and law enforcement. The episode also revisits the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, shedding light on the SAS's public debut and the political courage of Margaret Thatcher. The conversation takes a somber turn with the unresolved Templeton Woods murders in Dundee, emphasizing the distinct differences between the victims and the investigative challenges faced. Finally, they touch on the tragic miscarriage of justice in the Bay Village murder, paralleling it with popular culture representations. Throughout, Tom and Simon examine how power, greed, and the press influence criminal dynamics and law enforcement responses. This episode is a compelling mix of firsthand accounts, historical insights, and thoughtful analyses, perfect for true crime aficionados.00:00 Introduction and Greetings00:18 Simon's Gym Surprise01:04 Tom's New Book Announcement03:13 Deep Dive into Casino Crimes07:56 FBI Office Break-In17:20 Arthur Thompson Senior and Glasgow Crime24:45 The Ruthless Nature of Ferris and Thompson26:30 Historical Parallels: Percy Sillitoe and Gang Violence27:17 Proportional Force in Police Raids29:25 The Bay Village Murder Case33:35 The Iranian Embassy Siege40:44 Templeton Woods Murders and Operation Trinity48:27 The World's End Murders and Angus Sinclair Hosted on Acast.
