Derek Shulman was at the heart of two great transformations – Simon Dupree & the Big Sound switching to psychedelia, and then sensing the prog-rock trade winds and becoming Gentle Giant. One minute he was singing Kites, the next Pantagruel's Nativity (Gentle Giant's rebooted ‘Playing The Fool: The Complete Live Experience' is just out). After which he was a record label president signing Bon Jovi, Slipknot and Nickelback and rebooting AC/DC and Bad Company. It's a phenomenal story and involves … … three pieces of advice for any band today. … playing the ‘64 circuit in his R&B band the Roadrunners. … the fictitious character he invented as Simon Dupree. … when Dudley Moore was their session pianist. … memories of Marc Bolan (“flat on his back playing guitar”), Tony Iommi, Tony Visconti, Don Arden, Gerry Bron and “the English mob”. … what they borrowed from Traffic in the Great Psychedelic Scare of 1967. … auditioning for George Martin and the lab-coated sound engineers at Abbey Road. … being phoned on a ship returning from Sweden to be told ‘Kites' was Top Twenty and doing Top Of The Pops with Status Quo and the Kinks. … “cars and bags of jewels”: the advantage of being “the darlings of the Isle of Wight Mafia” (which included the Krays). … watching Bowie recording The Man Who Sold The World at Trident. … Elton John's advice that helped form Gentle Giant. … the catastrophic US tour with Black Sabbath (on their “chemical romance”) where the audience threw cherry-bombs onstage: “you learnt how to work a crowd!” … George Underwood's cover for the first Gentle Giant album. … what he saw in Slipknot and why he signed them. In this episode of Danny Hurst´s Unusual Histories Podcast, he is joined by former Manchester City midfielder and football agent, Barry Silkman, who grew up in the East End. He shares his insights into what it was like then as well as how he became a professional football player despite there being quite a lot of prejudice against Jews at the time. Barry talks about the pubs, local characters (including The Krays) and how people from different cultures developed a close community. As you would expect there are also a few footballing insider stories. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS The area has changed so much that when Barry went back there 18 months ago at times he didn´t really know where he was. When Barry was a kid, the area was very Jewish. Now, not many Jews live there. Despite its bad reputation, the East End of Barry´s childhood was a very safe place. The community was quite mixed. There were differences but most people integrated so everyone got along. Petticoat Lane market, one of London’s oldest, was always very busy. Both of Barry´s parents worked there for many years. BEST MOMENTS “Now everyone's so wary .. the dimension of the East End has changed.” “I'm very proud of my heritage.” “Three out of four doors were wide open until 10 at night…There weren’t people getting mugged, getting stabbed.” “The first time I played against Spurs, it was just a strange feeling.” “What I went through being Jewish as a kid made me mentally and physically very strong, so nothing gets me down.” “A lot of our friends were Indian people from Brick Lane, because we went to school with them.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Silkman Petticoat Lane Market History - https://surveyoflondon.org/map/feature/1742/detail Demographics of Stepney - https://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/Documents/Borough_statistics/Ward_profiles/SDSG-Ward-Profile.pdf Jewish Football Players - https://www.jta.org/2022/02/25/sports/british-jews-love-soccer-so-why-are-there-no-jews-in-the-premier-league https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cable_Street https://www.jewisheastend.com/garden.html HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Queens of the Underworld: A Journey into the Lives of Female Crooks (The History Press, 2021) tells the incredible story of Britain's female gangsters from the seventeenth century to the present day. Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, Ronnie Biggs, the Krays ... All have become folk heroes, glamorized and romanticized, even when they killed. But where are their female equivalents? Where are the street robbers, gang leaders, diamond thieves, gold smugglers and bank robbers? Queens of the Underworld reveals the incredible story of female crooks from the seventeenth century to the present. From Moll Cutpurse to the Black Boy Alley Ladies, from jewel thief Emily Lawrence to bandit leader Elsie Carey and burglar Zoe Progl, these were charismatic women at the top of their game. But female criminals have long been dismissed as either not 'real women' or not 'real criminals', and in the process their stories have been lost. Caitlin Davies unravels the myths, confronts the lies and tracks down modern-day descendants in order to tell the truth about their lives for the first time. Learn more about your ad choices. Ronnie and Reggie Kray, infamous criminal twin brothers from London's East End, exploded onto the scene in the swinging 1960s - rising to infamy as larger-than-life gangsters and underworld overlords. With a lethal cocktail of charm and extreme violence, the pair carved out their empire through a trail of blood, guts, and broken bones amidst numerous turf wars. Their criminal portfolio ranged from daring armed robberies to chilling contract killings, with multiple instances of arson and extortion, making the twins feared and revered in equal measure across London's seedy streets... But it wasn't just their criminal exploits that captured the public's imagination; it was their magnetic personalities and glamorous celebrity connections that added an irresistible (and contrasting) allure to their dark and dangerous world. The Krays lived fast, loved hard, and fought dirty, leaving behind a legacy of brutality and mayhem that continues to fascinate and terrify to this very day...Click HERE for more exclusive ICMAP content!www.icmap.co.uk Hosted on Acast. 'Champagne' Charlie Magri was one of the most decorated amateurs produced in the UK, and he went on to win the WBC flyweight title as a professional. The East End hero, who was born in Tunisia, was a four-time ABA champion who boxed at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, travelling there as favourite to claim gold. Here, Magri talks about life in the East End, from the Krays to the hardmen of the area, the likes of Terry Lawless, Mickey Duff, Frank Warren and Jimmy Tibbs and the best and worst times of his career. In retirement, Magri ran a pub, owned a sports shop and trained fighters, having left his mark as one of Britain's most-popular sportsmen from the 1980s.
This is a podcast about Cornwall in 1959, a strange and sad double murder that seems to have been forgotten about. I am thinking that my microphone needs replacing which won't happen until November when I next visit an urban centre and take some advice. So, I my take a break after posting a few more short pods. I will post a Southampton murder and a Pirate radio murder and then the Halloween episode, so three more pods for Series 6, then I will take a break. I will start series 7 around Christmas 2023.I wanted to do some more research before finishing my series on the Krays. I want to have an episode on the Kray gang members, who they really were based on primary sources, so that will be posted perhaps around Christmas. I realise that I have not posted a crypto zoology episode for some time, so I hope to remedy that early in Series 7.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com
[TW//Sexual abuse, sex addiction, criminal acts, drug and alcohol use] In 1993, author Michael Emmett found his name in the headlines when he was nicked for a £13million drug bust and sentanced to 12-and-a-half years in prison. Today we are going on a journey of recovery from crime, prison, drugs, the love of money and sex addiction. Discover the shocking and hugely inspiring life of Michael Emmett whose dad was connected to The Krays, Freddie Foreman, Frankie Frasier, The Richardson's Gang & The Great Train Robbers. While in prison, with his father in the same cell, he happened to find God, hope, and a new lease of life. A transformed and loving family man, Michael is sowing seeds of hope around the world through speaking events, podcasts and through his charity work helping to reform offenders in prison around the world. He hopes sharing his story of desperation and darkness will encourage others to step into the light. I really, really enjoyed spending time with Michael and his transformation is extremely powerful - I felt nothing but intense love and hope coming from the soul of this man. A huge thank you. In this podcast, we invite creatives who have lived through a rock bottom but have survived! These stories need to be heard to help others realise that no matter how bad things seem there is hope and always a way out!

Part 2 of the untold Kray stories. This tells of the corruption that resulted from the sexual interests of Ronnie Kray who was a predatory homosexual paedophile who corrupted others including well known politicians of the day at the sex parties he held. The main criticism is on the Conservative and Labour governments of the day that could have stopped the corruption but allowed it to continue to avoid negative publicity.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com
This is the second part of the podcast about a shoot out and affray at a club in Catford during March 1966.This podcast is not really about the Krays but an incident that finished their main rivals in London, The Richardson gang. The podcast is recorded in one take without editing and are lo-fi.I am not sure how much other kray podcasts can be trusted as many are based on biased books or biased accounts which often glorify the Kray gang. The podcasts I am trying to produce are based on police records which are often doubtful, but probably the truest accounts that exist. I also use accounts or books that I think can be trusted such as Albert Donoghue's 'The Krays' lieutenant. Donoghue turned against the Krays after they tried to make him take a murder charge on their account. I am hoping to make three or four Kray podcasts on specific incidents rather than an overall assessment on them. www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com
I have had the intention of doing some podcasts on the Kray gang for some time. As the story has been so well told and so well known I am concentrating on some background and lesser known stories. This is part one of the first Kray podcast. So part one of part one! I will post part two tomorrow. This podcast is not really about the Kray gang, but of an incident that gave the Krays the chance to become the dominant gang in London. The affray and shoot out at Mr Smith's club in Catford in South London.I will be posting other Kray podcasts over the next couple of months, these will be based on police records and other available material trying to get past the myths and tell the true story.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com
Four chapters of Hells Angels meet in a Yorkshire pub in Normanton and start drinking heavily. What could possibly go wrong? The crime is not a mystery and this is more of a period piece of life in the UK in Yorkshire during 1975.This is a short podcast, probably an unknown story made in a few hours just to post something in August. I have another podcast to post towards the end of the month. I am working on a couple of longer projects, including a podcast on the Krays, telling of some of the unknown stories and showing what thugs they actually were. I know that there is little need, or interest for another pod on the Krays, but I have some new material that I picked up during other podcasts that I had not known about and and I feel that I have to make a pod on them as I did on Jack the Ripper having lived in that area of London.Just to explain again, this story is low fi and there is a cat and dog disturbance which I managed to stop recording, but I left an electric fan running for a few minutes after ejecting creatures which I have tried to drown out with background music. Thank you for listening.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com

This is a short, straight forward case of a murder from 1944 taken from Police records. Nobody will remember a case that has faded from memory. I intend to post a few more short forgotten cases before the end of this series. I am also working on some podcasts about the Krays, not so much about the well known stories but the unpublished stories and those at the fringes of their corruption. Please be advised this podcast is unedited and lo-fi.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com
