Because he not only wants to perform well, he wants to be well received — and the latter lies outside his control.” – Epictetus   In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:   The craving for approval is not limited to musicians and other artists; it's a universal human trait. "Practice yourself, for heaven's sake, in little things, and thence proceed to greater." – Epictetus   In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:   There is a maxim in triathlon that says that amateurs train to their strengths and professionals train to their weaknesses.  It's how you end up with Ironman age groupers barely making the cutoff despite a sub five-hour bike split. Rather than focus on getting faster in the pool or grinding out another speed work session on the track, they opt to do the training that they enjoy the most and go for another ride.    This isn't limited to triathlon, of course.  Most of us prefer to do the things we are already good at rather than get better at a marginal skill.  But it's those marginal skills that make the difference and set us apart.    We talk about the importance of training to your weakness on today's podcast!   Resources + Links:   Connect with Kristofor | www.kristoforhealey.com Connect with Kristofor on Instagram | @team_healey Subscribe to The Stoic Responder on Substack | https://thestoicresponder.substack.com Subscribe to The Stoic Responder on YouTube | The Stoic Responder Buy your copy of In Valor: 365 Stoic Meditations for First Responders, here! “When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out of tune longer than you can help. We skip a workout. We hit the snooze button. We lose our temper. We overindulge food or drink. In the meme, users label the first tiny domino with some insignificant event like “skipping class today” and then the last, large domino, with a life changing event such as “becoming homeless.” It's a humorous way to illustrate how a small step in the wrong direction can have lasting impact on our lives.  This is especially true for law enforcement…Take Eugenio Pedraza, for example.    We discuss a real life example of the domino effect on today's podcast! Over the next three years, under Marcinko's leadership, they developed into one of the most effective counterterrorism units in the world.   To create his unit, Marcinko emphasized the importance of training under conditions that closely resembled real-world situations. Leave them alone.” - Marcus Aurelius   In This Episode, We Get Stoic About:   It's an old media trick on Capitol Hill.  Every time a politician gets caught doing something controversial, reporters seek comment from every passing Senator or Representative and use the responses to fuel the next news cycle.    Politicians love to talk, so they always take the bait, and soon the story evolves from news about an incident into the he said-she said sniping that keeps partisan viewers tuned in.
