On this episode we sit down with Lauren Cole to discuss her two recent reports about Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown's hidden suspension for lying in internal misconduct investigation during his time in Dallas. The suspension was actually for providing false information to a responding officer and then that officer's superiors during the follow investigation regarding action taken by Brown and his partner during a chase of a stolen car that resulted in two accidents. Brown gave these false statements when he knew there was eyewitness testimony to the events that occurred that had to contradict his untruthful recount of events. The second piece the Lauren published is about who must have known about the suspension and didn't say anything to the public or alderpeople who had to confirm his appointment. It is clear that the Chicago Police Board through their vetting process had to know about the suspension but decided anyways to put Brown's name on the short list of candidates that they delivered to the Mayor. Lauren also documents that before the Board sent Mayor Lori Lightfoot their short list she was already interviewing candidates and as Lauren documents there is reporting that the Board knew that Lightfoot wanted Brown as her superintendent and manipulated the short list to make sure Brown was the clear choice. This of course was all done despite his suspension that all of the above covered up. CJP is not saying at this point whether the suspension itself should be disqualifying but instead we hope that we allow people to know the degree to which the process for selecting Brown was corrupted despite the promises of candidate Lightfoot to do things differently than her predecessors. The corruption of the process to select a candidate for superintendent of the Chicago Police Department with a confirmed history of lying multiple times during an internal misconduct investigation should demonstrate the degree to which the Mayor will use her political power to an end that she wants despite it not being good for the city or the residents of Chicago. Chicago police officer John Catanzara has a history with the police accountability system in Chicago that is exhibit number one in why the system is broken. The failure of the system to remove him from the Chicago Police Department (CPD) has allowed Catanzara to ride a Trumpian movement within the Fraternal Order of Police and win election to be their president. It is like the membership of the FOP was proud to vote for someone that quite literally could be one of the worst officers within the CPD. Catanzara in his 23 years with the CPD managed to rack up 50 complaints from a mixture of complaints filed by everyday people and his fellow officers and superiors within the CPD. In 2007 he managed to rack up 7 complaints within a single year. In 2008 in two separate cases within the same year Catanzara managed to save his job as the CPD sought to termination his employment. Instead the weak Chicago Police Board both times found him guilty of some of the charges but reduced the discipline for Catazara from termination to a suspension of 20 days in each case. Catanzara is the ultimate hypocrite in that he has spent his 23 years on the CPD holding people to account for brekaing rules set by our legislators. Yet, during his entire career he has done nothing but break the rules, dis-obey authority, and show complete disdain for anyone in a position of authority besides himself. This is on full display in the range of social media posts that show his deep seated hatred for a whole range of minorities. Our report on the agenda of the Chicago City Council Committee on Public Safety reveals damning truths about just how useless this committee has been on the topics of policing and police accountability over the last 20 years. This incredibly comprehensive report looked at 489 agenda items of 186 meetings over 20 years from 2000 through July 2020. Our report leaves the members of this committee no room to wiggle out responsibility for their lack of interest in regulating the one department in the City of Chicago that is costing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars a year in settlements and judgments for misconduct each year. Instead the alderpeople have decided to spend as much time in their committee work focusing on donating use police and fire equipment abroad then they have on regulating policing and the police accountability system. It is a mind blowing abdication of the responsibilities as legislators and members of an oversight committee. It is clear that our report proves that over the last 20 years alderpeople have no desire to take any responsibility for what the police department does on their streets in their communities and uses the police accountability system as a shield to insulate themselves from the repercussions of their lack of action. She is particularly interested in gendered constructions of authority, the presentation of Adam and Eve, and the use of female embodiment in text and image throughout Hildegard's works. Lauren received her MA in History from the University of Bristol in 2018 and will start a PhD in Autumn 2021. She is passionate about public engagement and runs a TikTok account (@MedievalLauren) dedicated to busting myths about the Middle Ages and raising awareness of medieval female mystics. She is the founder of the hashtag #HildegardTok. Born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, sports have been a part of Lauren's life since the age of five. Growing up in a house of active siblings led her to fast-pitch softball, but she focused on Track & Field and earned a four-year college scholarship to compete in the sport. When a career-ending injury affected her success on the track, she pushed forward to pursue another passion - hair - and earned a license as a master cosmetologist in Atlanta, GA. The health and fitness industry has remained a key component in her life for a decade while working as a sports performance trainer, personal trainer, and even competing in bodybuilding for about three years. The Annual Mardi Gras Party sponsored by Indiana American Water is the Swope Art Museum’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and 2019 is shaping up to be a record-setting year for the Swope! Mardi Gras is at the Terre Haute Brewing Company on March 2 nd from 8pm to midnight. The MacDaddys will be in the house, as will Sora Circus Entertainment featuring an aerial bartender! We have 8 candidates running for Mardi Gras Queen and King: Peg Carney Finzel, Lauren Cole, Sierra Miller, Jennifer Mullen Brian Cain, Keith Carter, TJ Hellmann, James Twitchell The candidates who raise the most money will be crowned 2019 Swope Mardi Gras King and Queen and will forever hold their place in Swope lore. Thomas Chisholm wrote the classic hymn, Great is Thy Faithfulness, as a testimony to God’s enduring love. The hymn calls to mind the words of the prophet Jeremiah in Lamentations 3: "I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” How does one have hope like this? And how can parents and youth leaders nurture children and teens in ways that result in great hope? Our friends Cameron and Lauren Cole have experienced firsthand the kind of tragedy that leads to a downcast soul. But in the midst of that, God gifted them with great hope. We’ll be talking with the Cole’s about Cameron’s new book, “Therefore I Have Hope: 12 Truths That Comfort, Sustain, and Redeem Tragedy”, along with the importance of communicating these truths in our homes and youth ministries, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
