In the arc of a life – especially one as rich and eventful as Greg LeMond's - certain stories get lost to the grander narrative. But in 1987, the bigger story was still unwritten. That year – soon after he'd won his first Tour de France, in the prime of his career – Greg LeMond was shot, and almost died.A Grand Tour champion, violence, drugs, intrigue, rehabilitation, and redemption: this is that story. We're running this first episode across our network, but future episodes will only be found on the Rabbit Holes channel. On this edition of "The Claw's Corner" Rich "The Claw" Cyr and Rob Bull interview award-winning writer Daniel de Visé to discuss his book "The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic" From https://danieldevise.com/ - Daniel de Visé is a writer and journalist. His books have been translated into Spanish, German, Dutch, and Estonian. A graduate of Wesleyan and Northwestern universities, he has worked at The Washington Post, USA Today, the Miami Herald and four other newspapers. He shared a 2001 team Pulitzer Prize and garnered more than two dozen other national and regional journalism awards. His investigative reporting twice led to the release of wrongly convicted men from life terms in prison. His first book, I Forgot To Remember (with Su Meck, Simon & Schuster, 2014), began as a front-page article de Visé wrote for the Washington Post in 2011. His second book, Andy & Don (Simon & Schuster, 2015), began as a journalistic exploration into the storied career of his late brother-in-law, Don Knotts. Andy & Don is now in its thirteenth paperback printing. His third book, The Comeback (Grove Atlantic, 2018), rekindled a childhood obsession with professional cycling and the sport's forgotten hero, Greg LeMond. The Comeback inspired Congress to award LeMond its highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal, in December 2020. His fourth book, King of the Blues, honors a lifelong passion for collecting, performing and writing about music. King of the Blues was longlisted for the 2022 PEN America award in biography. King of the Blues inspired his fifth book, The Blues Brothers, a jubilant return to his home town of Chicago. Daniel is married to Sophie Yarborough, an editor at The Washington Post. In the end, the biggest obstacles to a Tadej Pogačar victory in the Giro d'Italia were a few over-excited fans giving him an unwelcome push on Monte Grappa. The Slovenian now says that he will chill, and then come back for the kill, only this time at the Tour de France... In the wake of Pogačar's six stage wins that carried him to the largest winning margin at the Giro for six decades, we reflect on the UAE Team Emirates leader's radical change of Grand Tour fortunes and look ahead to how his first GT win since 2021 has changed the racing landscape just five weeks before the Tour de France gets under way in Florence. We reveal Pogačar's plans for his Tour preparation, which include a week kicking back at home in Monaco, and assess whether he could pull off the greatest racing season in the sport's history. Our Giro coverage also features a lengthy final diary from Grand Tour debutant Harrison Wood. The Cofidis rider reveals the good and the bad of his race and wonders why UAE Team Emirates made things so difficult for everyone on the final "parade" stage into Rome. After Lorena Wiebes and her SD Worx time put on a Pogačar-like show of dominance to sweep the three stages and the overall crown at the Ride London Classique, race director Scott Sunderland tells us why the British event is going from strength to strength and about bigger plans for the future. We also have a lengthy interview with Human Powered Health's Audrey Cordon-Ragot. The highly experienced French racer reflects on the increasing flow of cash in the women's peloton, but argues that more of that money needs to find its way to the riders who aren't star names and are nearer the foot of the racing pyramid. Three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond provides this episode's "Way to Make Cycling Better", the American offering his suggestion for a league-like system that would make the sport easier for all comers to understand. We're only 15 days into the 2024 Giro d'Italia, and already Tadej Pogačar has the race in his pocket. He leads second-placed Geraint Thomas by almost seven minutes. Before the Giro began, he had already won Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Volta a Catalunya. Soon he will be turning his sights to the Tour de France. Is he going to win every race he turns up to this season? In order to get perspective and context on his achievements, shortly after the Slovenian's Grand Tour masterclass on stage 15 to Livigno we caught up with Greg LeMond, a three-time winner of the Tour de France, who finished third on his Giro debut in 1985. The American tells us why he already puts Pogačar in the same class as Eddy Merckx, why he expects him to better and faster at the Tour de France, and why he loves to watch him race. Going into the Giro, Antonio Tiberi was renowned primarily for his disgraceful shooting of a cat. Over the race's opening fortnight, he's shown a very different side of himself, holding the pace of the GC favourites as he's taken a firm grip on the white jersey of best young rider. To get an insight into Italian cycling's new GC hope we hear from Tuttobici journalist Carlo Malvestio, who tells us that the rider dubbed "The Sniper" by some of his peers still has some way to go to redeem himself, but is winning the tifosi over with his performances on the road. The Giro sprints have dominated by one man, Lidl-Trek's Jonathan Milan, a towering presence who can produce equally towering power outputs when he gets a finish line in his sights. Milan's team director Gregory Rast tells us why the Italian phenomenon is already one of the leading sprinters in the sport and that he's only going to get better. Sticking with the sprinters, we focus too on Fabio Jakobsen. Last winter, the Dutchman moved from Soudal QuickStep to dsm-firmenich-PostNL on a three-year deal tasked with scoring enough wins to keep his team in the WorldTour. However, in 39 race days Jakobsen has only won once and has been forced to quit the Giro after crashing. Team director Matt Winston tells us why Jakobsen has struggled and why he will come good. Finally, we hear from Cofidis climber Harrison Wood. In his Giro diary, the young Briton talks about his time in the break on the epic stage over the Mortirolo and into Livigno, about helping Simon Geschke pick up points for the mountains jersey, and reveals the awfulness of the last 1.5km of that stage on a super-steep dirt road. Over 1 million people tuned into part 1 on youtube & podcast platforms and the number 1 comment was “Greg is the reason I started cycling”. How cool is that? So in todays Part 2 Greg LeMond, chats to Anthony about his early years, the 1989 and 1990 Tour de France, the curse of the yellow jersey and of course Greg is, as ever, disarmingly honest about doping, mental health, his retirement and so much more.
The last rider is a documentary about the first American to win the Tour de France cycle race, and Greg LeMond did it without drugs! Directed by Alex Holmes (Maiden).
Simon Morris is philosophic about the built in let-downs in so many movies - whether it's an over-extended franchise, a once-reliable studio or simply a film that fails to match expectations. But there's still the possibility of being pleasantly surprised. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees Harrison Ford don the hat and crack the whip one last time. Co-starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and Toby Jones (The Detectorists). Country Cabaret is a French - a very French! - feelgood movie about a real-life farmer who decided to raise money by creating a cabaret, complete with dancers, jugglers, burlesque artists and conjurors - in his barn. A hit at the French Film Festival. And The last rider is a documentary about the first American to win the Tour de France cycle race, and Greg LeMond did it without drugs! Directed by Alex Holmes (Maiden).
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Greg LeMond has revolutionized the sport of cycling. As one of the most iconic cyclists in history, Greg is the sole American to clinch the Tour de France, not just once but three times. Today, Greg takes us on a journey behind the scenes of his life and career, unveiling his intense rivalries with cycling's finest and how a near-fatal hunting accident reshaped his purpose both personally and professionally. And yet, Greg's quest for greatness extends far beyond personal triumph. He is a fierce advocate for the integrity of the sport—a visionary who calls for unyielding anti-doping measures. My friends, this conversation transcends the sport of cycling. Greg is a true champion that has rewritten the boundaries of what it means to be truly great. If you're searching for an upstanding model of courage, resilience, integrity, determination, and overcoming all odds, this conversation is for you.

If the Critérium du Dauphiné's ability to highlight the Tour de France favourites once again proves reliable, Jonas Vingegaard is going to be hard to stop as he aims to defend his title in July. We examine the Dane's dismantling of his rivals in the French Alps, look at which of them have emerged from the Dauphiné with reason for optimism and, on the flip side, those who have left with their reputations tarnished.Liker the Dauphiné, the Tour International Féminin des Pyrénées was scheduled to have a Sunday afternoon finish, but instead the three-day stage event ended in chaos and acrimony on the final morning with riders and teams refusing to race due to safety fears after repeated incursions by cars on the route. We hear from the CPA riders' union president Adam Hansen, who negotiated on the racers' behalf, about what went wrong and how it can be put right. Were the riders really "spoilt children" as the race director asserted? Our colleague Shane Stokes caught up with three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond earlier this week. In extracts from their conversation, we hear about the former world champion's battle with leukaemia and how it's finally going his way after his initial fears that it might beat him, and about his plans for carbon fibre innovation in the bike industry and a relaunch for his bike brand. We close with another exclusive that came out of Chris Marshall-Bell's interview with Vuelta a España director Javier Guillén, who reveals that the Spanish Grand Tour is actively looking for more starts. He also lifts the lid on big plans for the Vuelta Femenina, launched with huge success as a seven-day race last month. Guillén admits that he wants the race to be longer, perhaps more than twice as long in the medium team...Support the show

Matt Stephens speaks to Andy McGrath about his impressive career as a sports writer which all began at the tender age of 14 under an embarrassing alias. He has since gone on to become Chief Reporter for Cycling Weekly and Editor of Rouleur Magazine. In 2017 he won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year for Tom Simpson: Bird on the Wire. Matt spoke to Andy on the eve of the 2022 awards, where his second book, a Frank Vandenbroucke biography entitled God is Dead was shortlisted for the same prize. There are many tangents as always, including a brush with the law, some worrying sirens, cars powered by chip fat, and a story about trying to get Greg Lemond to do karaoke.
Len PettyJohn got started with bike racing while in school in Wisconsin. His first race was in 1974 in Colorado. He would eventually take a break from racing and riding. But the draw of organizing a team pulled him right back in. In the beginning he set up teams like Aspen Skiwear/Dia Coupe, McDonalds to Lowery's Meat Snacks. Len stepped it up in the 80's with teams such as Lowenbrau, Crest, and the Coors Light. Managing teams meant PettyJohn had to manage riders. He would work with Greg Lemond, Alexi Grewal, Doug Shapiro, Davis Phinney to the mercurial Michel Zanoli to name a few. In the six years Coors Light existed they won over 500 races!PettyJohn says by the mid 90's he was disillusioned with cycling and its drug culture so he moved on. He began organizing races like the Tour of Denver, Bannock criterium to the Saturn cycling classic. PettyJohn eventually turned his attention to coaching. Coaching is something he's had great success with. And if you're looking for a great coach he's got a couple spots open at the moment.

Our guest for this episode, Bill Humphreys, is a pioneer in American cycling. The passion and enthusiasm he has for cycling comes across clearly in our interview and that should be no surprise considering he's not only been a competitor, but also a race promoter and advocate for the sport itself for close to 50 years. Listen in as Bill shares stories of his career with us, including the twist of fate that got him started with cycling, what it was like coaching Greg LeMond along with many other premier riders over the years and of course, exactly what he wants his pal "Joe Football" to know about cycling! Enjoy!

Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where in late July we are in the proverbial dog days of both summer and sports. Unless you're an MLB trade deadline follower, an NFL training camp devotee or fan of European club soccer friendlies abroad, there's not much on the docket. But there is an event of great prestige; just concluded, on the global sport landscape, the Tour de France that is the focus of this week's conversation. Cycling's premier event dates back to the infancy of the 20th century, and the early history leads this discourse. A near century's worth of competition precedes American interest in the event before native son Greg LeMond pockets three tour wins in the late 80s. Interest wanes post-Lemond amidst doping scandals that mar the event from it's very beginning. Until we get to Lance Armstrong, who becomes one of American sport's great celebrities and icons on the back of seven consecutive tour wins, victories later exposed as being done under the veil of performance enhancing drugs. The Tour is a massive European summer sport sensation, but viewed with great cynicism by American viewers in a post-Armstrong world. Where the tour stands today concludes our conversation. But FIRST, a trilogy of rants, leading off with Zak taking aim at the Susan Collins/Joe Manchin led Reform of Electoral Count Act and the future of electoral politics in our splintered world; Ed fires off on Washington whatever the fuck they call themselves owner Dan Snyder and his off-shore yacht occupancy in the wake of a Congressional subpoena into long-term cultural indiscretion; and in closing Andrew pens a eulogy for Europe's Ryder Cup side, as pillars disqualify themselves to the LIV outfit and a (briefly) once proud captain joins their ranks.
Season 2 launches with a two tales from the Tour De France, which has, over the course of decades, become a stain on the sport of competitive cycling. But what does the Tour's future hold?

He rode his bike everywhere in the San Diego area. he eventually started riding with the San Diego bike club. His first race was a time trial and got hooked to the bike. Baseball and BBQ Episode #134 features author, John Rosengren and pitmasters, Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler John Rosengren is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is Classic Baseball: Timeless Tales, Immortal Moments. His feature articles, profiles, and essays have appeared in more than 100 publications. The following is taken from the "About John" section of his website, https://www.johnrosengren.net/ "I once interviewed a woman shot in the head by hijackers and left for dead on the tarmac. I raced my bike against Greg LeMond in South Africa (and beat him). I played a tennis match against the world's top-ranked wheelchair tennis player (and lost). I channeled a 330-pound Samoan, a retired NFL nose tackle who is gay (Esera Tuaolo, for his memoir). I played softball on snowshoes in the summertime (wood chips spread across the infield). I rapped a base hit off former Twins pitcher Rick Aguilera. I listened to a nurse tell me the story of prying a shotgun shell out of Ernest Hemingway's hand when he was intent on killing himself. I profiled a woman who is a Roman Catholic priest. I attended a powwow with LGBTQ Native Americans. I interviewed a mortician in the room where she embalmed my father. I talked to a 15-year-old boy in his hospital room after he tried to stop a school shooter." The preceding is why we went into this interview knowing we would never be able to discuss all of his accomplishments in one sitting, so the first thing we did was extend an invitation to have him back. Chris Lilly, Grant Pinkerton, and John Wheeler are three outstanding pitmasters who have spent years honing their craft and earning well-deserved reputations for being among the best. We were fortunate to meet them at Pig Beach BBQ in Queens, NY during the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit. Each interview is relatively short, but comes with their assurances that they will join us again. The conversations may have been brief, but we still gathered some barbecue tips as well as getting a small glimpse into each of their lives and enjoy their delightful personalities, which were on display all day for the many people who paid to be there and experience these pitmasters signature dishes. I played softball on snowshoes in the summertime (wood chips spread across the infield). I rapped a base hit off former Twins pitcher Rick Aguilera. I listened to a nurse tell me the story of prying a shotgun shell out of Ernest Hemingway's hand when he was intent upon killing himself. I profiled a woman who is a Roman Catholic priest. I attended a powwow with LGBTQ Native Americans. I interviewed a mortician in the room where she embalmed my father. I interviewed a 15-year-old boy in his hospital room after he tried to stop a school shooter. All in a few days' work, stretching back to 1981, when I began freelancing as a senior in high school, same time I got clean and sober. My work has won a couple dozen awards and been nominated for a National Magazine Award and a Pulitzer Prize (but didn't win either of those). Along the way, I have lived in Boise, Boston, Florence, London, Paris, and St. Paul. Today I'm at home in my native Minneapolis with my wife Maria, our two children, and a golden retriever named Maya. About Classic Baseball A collection of iconic, unbelievable, and intimate stories from baseball history that celebrate the enduring impact of the national pastime. Baseball—rooted as it is in tradition and nostalgia—lends itself to the retelling of its timeless tales. So it is with the stories in Classic Baseball, a collection of articles written by award-winning journalist John Rosengren and originally published by Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, Sports on Earth, VICE Sports, and other magazines. These are stories about the game's legends—Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Josh Gibson, Bob Feller, Frank Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Kirby Puckett—and its lesser-knowns with extraordinary stories of their own. They cover some of the game's most famous moments, like Hank Aaron hitting No. 715, and some you've never heard of, like the time the Ku Klux Klan played a game against an all-Black team. Whether it be the story of John Roseboro forgiving Juan Marichal for clubbing him in the head with a bat, Elston Howard breaking down the Yankees' systemic racism to integrate America's team, or the national pastime played on snowshoes during July in a remote Wisconsin town, these are stories meant to be read and read again for their poignancy, their humor, and their celebration of baseball. Charlie Issendorf is a name you need to know. Let me give you a rundown of his story. Charlie started racing in 1978 at the age of 8. He turned Cat 2 when he was 14 and Cat 1 at 16. He's a silver medalist at the Junior National Pursuit Champs. He lost to no other than current U.S National Sprint Coach Erin Hartwell. He raced for the national team at the Vuelta de Chile and Tour of Greece. He rode for the famed GS Mengoni amateur team for years. A team that once had Greg Lemond, George Hincapie, Rich Hincapie, Adam Myerson, Wilson Vasquez on their roster. When Charlie hung up his wheels he wasn't done with racing. He's organized over 400 races in the NYC area for 17 years. Races like Prospect Park, Floyd Bennett Field to the Harlem Skyscraper Criterium. Issendorf handed his race promotions responsibilities off in 2021. In 2014 he began working with Zwift when it was a startup. He raced with Eric Min, Zwift CEO and co-founder back in the 80's when they were juniors. Currently Charlie is Zwift's event director. I recently sat down for a chat with Charlie about all things cycling especially in the NYC area from the 80's to what's going on right now.
