Jen was hooked. She's now primarily a snowboarder, but most of her team is made up of skiers. Jen tells us about her path from college to her work in outdoor education and how she came to the decision to start Coalition Snow and make skis and snowboards.  It started when Jen was disappointed by the lack of high performance ski and snowboard equipment for women and decided to fill that gap. She saw that the lack of representation of women across the industry - so she jumped in and figured out how to make skis and snowboards. Coalition Snow doesn't make a lot of beginner equipment, but that wasn't the void Jen saw in the industry - she wanted to make more advanced/expert equipment for women.  Jen tells us about some of the new equipment Coalition is launching in the coming seasons that she's excited about and where we can find their gear. Kathryn and Kristi catch up with cyclist and diversity advocate Brooke Goudy. Brooke's love for cycling started as a child when she got her first bike as a Christmas present, and grew to a life-long passion. Brooke moved to Colorado and found a new passion in mountain biking, but she was struck by the lack of representation of people of color in the sport. This led her to seek out other women of color in the mountain biking community, and she joined the Denver branch of the national organization Black Girls Do Bike. Brooke is now the co-leader of the Black Girls Do Bike Denver, and continues her mission to help minority groups feel seen and represented in cycling. An impressive cyclist in her own right, this past summer Brooke rode the Tour Divide. The Great Divide Trail tour route travels from Banff, Canada all the way south to the US/Mexico border and stacks up nearly 200,000 vertical feet of climbing. The route took her 64 days to complete. She talks about what she learned along the way and how that time on the trail changed her perspective of what she was capable of, both on and off the bike. This summer they will all be taking part in the Westfjords Way Challenge, a 5-day stage race in the Westfjords of Iceland that will cover 595 miles over some of the country's most remote and beautiful landscape. Lynnee is the co-director of the Westfjords Way Challenge, she wants everyone to know that it is more than just a race; the event is about meaningful interaction with the people and places you will encounter along the way. Lynnee and her organizing team have also made a commitment to equity on the start line, and they are holding 50% or all registrations for women. Maria is a local rider and gives her insider scoop on the event, and what else you can do while you are there. She discusses with Brooke and Lael how to prepare for the race, from training to mindset. The three encourage all women to give it a try, even if you feel like it might be out of your comfort zone - you'll likely discover a community of like-minded women along the way!Toe learn more or register for the event go to: https://cyclingwestfjords.com/wfwc/ Follow the event on Instagram @cyclingwestfjords **Support the Girls Gone Gravel Podcast**InsideTracker: Get 20% off at insidetracker.com/feisty. Everything you see and read and hear is 100% real. Real talk, from us, it's how we feel."   "We don't live in a time where you can be agnostic to the massive social, environmental, and economical problems that we face. Entrepreneur Jen Gurecki is a mover, a shaker, a hustler, and above all else, a modern day feminist who lives a purpose-driven life where SHE makes the rules - not society - and she’s been marching to the beat of her own drum since birth. At 26 years old while doing her masters’ research work in Africa, Jen founded nonprofit Zawadisha which provides microloans, solar-powered equipment and education to rural Kenyan women to empower them to become financially self-sufficient. In 2014, she decided to start a women’s ski and snowboard company, Coalition Snow, to see how the male-dominated industry would react. Within just a few years, she turned down a $1M offer for the business from ski legend Bode Miller on the CNBC TV Show Adventure Capitalists. Then she created Sisu Magazine, and now she also co-hosts the Juicy Bits podcast. The common tie to all of her entrepreneurial endeavors? Jen’s challenging the patriarchy and fighting for gender equality through innovative businesses and content mediums - all while unapologetically pursuing a life full of freedom, adventure, and impact. @coalitionsnow | @zawadisha | @sisumagazine www.coalitionsnow.com | www.zawadisha.org | www.sisumagazine.com More at www.notimetowasteproject.com or follow @notimetowasteproject

Josh sits down with Coalition Snow founder Jennifer Gurecki. Coalition Snow is a Ski and Snowboard brand making top quality planks and boards for women. This happens to be Gurecki's second time on the show and it's no question that Coalition Snow has been on a serious upswing since we've had her on the show. Coalition Snow's rise upward only gave her more momentum to create her recently launched Sisu Magazine AND a podcast of her own, Juicy Bits, where she captures and unravels women's experiences and captivating thoughts that are sparked on the trail and chairlift. We're PSYCHED to have her back on the show and to get a chance to catch up with Coalition Snow founder, Jennifer Guereck

This episode is the first of an entire season of Channel Mastery podcasts co-produced by our friends at the Snowsports Industries of America (SIA). Jen Gurecki joins me on this episode and after sharing the mic with her, I have to say, she just embodies the word entrepreneur. She is Co-founder and CEO of Coalition Snow, a women’s-specific ski hardgoods company, Editor-in-Chief of Sisu Magazine, and as of Oct. 14, 2019, a specialty brick-and-mortar retailer (Truckee, Calif.). Jen knows a thing or two about breaking the barriers and building channels where her followers expect her to with Coalition Snow. She’s a die-hard advocate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and is seemingly unafraid to stand up for things many, many other brands are fearful to stand up for. We need more Jen Gurecki’s in our world, IMO. Jen’s background in the outdoor industry is unlike the traditional path many CEO’s in the snowsports communities have taken. When some were sales reps, she was founding a company in rural Kenya. How hard could it be, then, to start a women’s ski hardgoods brand? She set about to find out with Coalition Snow, a company that makes skis for women by women.  Her drive, desire to push boundaries and willingness to try new strategies in a male-dominated battlefield sets her and the Coalition Snow team apart from their competitors, but beyond that, they’re creating a sense of community and inclusiveness where it’s needed and using a creative and ever-evolving mix of brand and sales channels to connect with loyal fans and followers.  Jen’s episode underscores the importance of being nimble, and testing and learning - concepts that are tough for longstanding, established brands to emulate. There’s a ton to learn from Jen’s instinct and her challenges and successes. Check out the show and give it a share today!  Jen Gurecki is the CEO of Coalition Snow & Editor of Sisu Magazine.

Hey friends! Welcome back to the Balanced Pursuits Podcast! This week’s guest is Jen Gurecki, the co-founder & CEO of Coalition Snow, a women’s ski and snowboard company designed to deconstruct the status quo. We have a very raw and honest discussion with Jen about the state of the outdoor industry & how to use business as a tool for radical change.Jen is not shy about sharing her opinion on how we, as a society, can do better for marginalized communities. She’s committed her career to this work not only through Coalition Snow, but also through Zawadisha, a social enterprise whose mission is to provide small loans to rural Kenyan women, and Sisu Magazine, a quarterly print publication whose focus is to uncover the untold stories of the outdoors. Also, I’d like to make a special shoutout to our male listeners today. Kristi and I didn’t start this podcast with the intention of focusing exclusively on female empowerment, but it’s a theme that seems to turn up quite often. I suppose it’s because it’s the world in which we live and it’s close to our hearts. In our eyes, this is not just a conversation to have with women, but with all people. So guys, thank you for being a part of the conversation and being a part of the change. In this episode we explore:Turning a void in a market into opportunityHow business can be a tool for radical changeWhy not preparing can sometimes be a key to successWhen Jen first got the call to step into women’s advocacyThe difference between being “nice” and being “kind”How solar lamps elevated the lives of Kenyan womenTweetables:“I didn’t know that much, so I just did it.”“Being naive sometimes can be such a blessing because you do things that, if you knew everything, you wouldn’t do.”“Business can be a tool for radical change.”"I like to think about life as a series of choices and what’s behind the next door.”“I never think about the practical side of things, but I think that that’s served me relatively well so far, so I’m just going to keep going with it.”“Service is the rent you pay for life.”“We’re having conversations about things that there’s no definitive answer to. And how interesting is that? To question the concept of fact and to question the concept of knowledge.”“We have to be very careful and very discerning between what is a marketing message and what is true change.”Learn more about Jen’s endeavors:www.coalitionsnow.com & on Instawww.sisumagazine.com & on Instawww.zawadisha.org & on InstaFollow Jen Gurecki on Instagram

Women have achieved gender parity in a large number of professions. (Whether they have parity in leadership is a whole nother question, but let’s not even get into that today.) But there are still plenty of them, from tech, to science to the outdoors industry, where the boys are still in charge for the most part. Today’s show is part 1 of a two-part series about women breaking into professions that are still male-dominated, whether that’s by working within the system, or going outside the system to do their own thing. This week we hear from Felicity of the blog Fetching Financial Freedom, and Danielle Rees, co-founder of Coalition Snow, the world’s only women-owned ski and snowboard company making products by women, for women. These badass women have completely different stories about getting ahead in their fields. Next week, we’ll hear from two scientists across the pond, one in the UK and one in South Africa.

With the spark of a simple conversation during a backcountry ski trip Jen was given the idea to start a ski company to fill in a serious gap in the snow industry and, absolutely ran with it!
