In this empowering episode, we spotlight the Black women who have reshaped the narrative of winter sport and etched their names into Olympic history. From trailblazers in figure skating to champions on the ice track, their stories span decades of perseverance, excellence, and barrier-breaking achievement. We start with Debi Thomas, who in 1988 became the first Black American woman to win a medal at the Winter Olympics, taking home bronze in figure skating — a milestone that opened doors in a sport long dominated by others. Next, we celebrate Vonetta Flowers, whose gold medal in 2002 not only made her the first Black woman from any country to win Olympic gold at the Winter Games, but also paved the way for future generations of athletes in sliding sports. We then feature Erin Jackson, who, in 2022, made history as the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Olympics in the 500 m long-track speed skating event — a defining personal and cultural moment for the sport. The episode also honors Elana Meyers Taylor, one of the most decorated athletes in Winter Olympic history. Her multi-medal career, capped by gold in 2026, has set records and inspired a new generation of Black athletes to take on winter competition. And finally, we highlight a historic team achievement from 2026: Laila Edwards became the first Black American woman to win Olympic gold in ice hockey, a testament to how far Black female athletes have come — and how far they continue to push the boundaries of possibility.

Ea a născut 2 copii surzi, unul dintre ei suferind de sindromul Down. Podiumul olimpic!

Teacher forces student to wash off Ash Wednesday cross; Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against Trump tariffs; Texas bobsled gold medalist almost quit

It's Monday, February 23rd, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Utah teacher forces student to wash off Ash Wednesday cross A Utah elementary school faced backlash after a teacher told a Catholic student to remove an Ash Wednesday cross from his forehead, a symbol marking the beginning of Lent, reports WHSV TV. Fourth-grader William McLeod had attended church on Ash Wednesday and arrived at Valley View Elementary School in Bountiful, Utah wearing a traditional ash cross.  He said classmates initially questioned him about it, unaware that the ash cross marked the beginning of Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness before the beginning of His three-year ministry. The boy recalled his teacher asking, “What is that?” He replied, “It's Ash Wednesday. It's the first day of Lent.” She said, “No, it's inappropriate. Go take it off.” In front of his peers, she gave the child a wipe and told him to clean his forehead. McLeod said, “I felt really bad.” His grandmother said he was embarrassed and upset, saying he later went to see the school psychologist “crying.” The Davis School District issued a formal apology, saying the teacher's actions were unacceptable. A spokesman said, “No student should ever be asked or required to remove an ash cross from his or her forehead.” The teacher later apologized. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against Trump tariffs On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs, striking down a central part of his economic agenda, reports The Western Journal. TRUMP: “The Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing. I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what's right for our country.” The case focused on tariffs President Trump imposed under a 1977 emergency powers law known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. He used that law to impose reciprocal tariffs on most countries beginning last year. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act “does not authorize the President to impose tariffs.” Associate Justice Amy Barrett and Neil Gorsuch sided with Roberts and the court's three liberals. However, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Brett Kavanaugh dissented, reports the Associated Press. President Trump imposes new tariff using different authority On Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “I would like to thank and congratulate Justices Thomas, Alito, and Kavanaugh for your strength, wisdom, and love of our country, which is right now very proud of you. “When you read the dissenting opinions, there is no way that anyone can argue against them. Foreign Countries that have been ripping us off for years are ecstatic, and dancing in the streets — But they won't be dancing for long!” Kavanaugh wrote, “The decision might not substantially constrain a President's ability to order tariffs going forward. That is because numerous other federal statutes authorize the President to impose tariffs and might justify most (if not all) of the tariffs issued in this case. ... Those statutes include, for example, the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (Section 232); the Trade Act of 1974 (Sections 122, 201, and 301); and the Tariff Act of 1930 (Section 338).” TRUMP:  “Other alternatives will now be used to replace the ones that the court incorrectly rejected. Great alternatives. Could be more money. We'll take in more money.” Inspired by Judge Brett Kavanaugh's dissent, President Trump imposed a new 10% global tariff the same day of the Supreme Court decision last Friday, using Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, reports NewsNation. GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales had affair with aide who set herself on fire U.S. Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas engaged in a romantic relationship with an aide who died last year by setting herself on fire outside her Uvalde home, according to a text message and people close to the aide and her family, reports the San Antonio Express-News. Both she and Gonzales were married to other people at the time of the alleged affair. A former staffer in Gonzales' district office, who worked closely with the aide, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, said she told him they had an affair in 2024, and that she spiraled into a depression after her husband discovered the relationship and Gonzales abruptly ended their affair. Exodus 20:14 says, “You shall not commit adultery.” He also shared with the San Antonio Express-News a screenshot of a text message from Regina in which she acknowledged having an “affair with our boss.” The staffer, who asked not to be named, citing a fear of retaliation, faulted Gonzales' office for failing to intervene, saying he warned the congressman's district director months before Regina's fiery suicide that he was concerned about her well-being. He described her as his “best friend” and said their families knew each other. Gonzales, a Republican representing Texas' 23rd Congressional District, is currently seeking re-election in a contested primary.  The San Antonio Express-News, which had initially endorsed Gonzales in the March 3rd Republican primary, recently withdrew its endorsement. In the Republican Primary for Congress in District 23, many South Texans are looking to support Francisco “Quico” Canseco during early voting or on Election Day, Tuesday, March 3rd. Texas bobsled gold medalist almost quit And finally, (audio of Olympics theme song) It was a couple of weeks before Christmas. Elana Meyers Taylor, age 41, was in Norway, prepping for a World Cup bobsled weekend. Things were going horribly. Her body was hurting, she wondered if she was doing right by her two deaf children, and the racing results were, well, bad, reports the San Antonio Express-News. So, she texted her husband. The message: I'm done.  She wrote, “This is just impossible. It's never going to work.” She was 10th in the World Cup monobob standings. Eight women won medals on the circuit this winter and she wasn't one of them. Her average finish was 10th and her result during a race on the Olympic track in November was 19th — a whopping 2.43 seconds behind the winning time. FEMALE ANNOUNCER: “She had probably her worst season of monobob in her life.” Her husband, former bobsledder Nic Taylor, is now a performance coach and works with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs. When a Spurs player — the couple won't say who — learned Elana was struggling, he gifted Nic a plane ticket and told him, “Go to Norway immediately!” So, Nic flew to Norway to encourage his wife in person after those discouraging texts to talk her out of quitting.  That strengthened Elana's resolve to compete. Listen to the Olympics announcer during Elana's bobsled run. MALE ANNOUNCER: “Elana Myers Taylor has this magical moment to win another Olympic medal and potentially gold. Her husband Nick and sons, Noah and Nico, are here in the crowd. “This is a promising run for Elana Myers Taylor. Sixteen-hundredths of a second ahead of Kaillie Humphries, 12-hundredths of a second ahead. Elana Myers Taylor has never won a gold medal at the Olympics. She has now. It's gold for the United States, and that elusive gold medal for Eleanor Myers Taylor, is elusive no more. The most prolific female bobsledder in history.” At 41, she became the oldest woman to win an individual gold medal in Winter Games history. It was her sixth Olympic medal. She said, “I was determined to keep fighting, determined to just put down the best runs I could. And look what happened. There were so many moments during this entire season, during this past four years, that I thought it wasn't possible.” And now you know the rest of the story. In 1 Corinthians 9:24, the Apostle Paul asked, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Or, in Elana Meyers Taylor's case, slide in such a way as to get the prize. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British preacher challenges buffer zones around abortion mills A preacher in Britain is challenging the country's abortion buffer zones which effectively censor the Bible. Officials arrested, charged, and convicted Stephen Green for holding a sign with a Bible verse near an abortion mill in 2023. The verse was Psalm 139:13 which says, “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb.” Green stated, “As a Christian, I should be able to preach freely all over the land. Psalm 139 is about how we all belong to God from conception. Buffer zones and this conviction [are] a direct attack on the Bible and free speech.” Elon Musk endorsed new conservative political party in England Billionaire Elon Musk endorsed a new conservative political party in Britain last week. On Friday, Member of Parliament Rupert Lowe launched the Restore Britain Party. Musk shared the launch video on X which has received nearly 40 million views.  The party is devoted to ending mass immigration and the creeping Islamification of Britain. Rupert Lowe also stated the party will openly recognize the country's Christian heritage.  Listen. LOWE: “Restore Britain will openly recognize the Christian heritage that shaped this country's moral and civic foundation. (applause) Duty, restraint, forgiveness and, most importantly, fairness. These values created a high trust society. “Restore Britain will end the creeping Islamification of Britain. (applause)  Unfettered immigration from Islamic countries will end. (applause) Britain is a Christian country, and under Restore Britain government, it will remain a Christian country.” (applause) Church of England votes against blessing homosexual couples Last week, the Church of England  voted against proposals to allow blessing services for homosexual couples. The General Synod did not shut the door on the issue though, voting to investigate it in the future.  The move keeps the church from performing marriage services and blessing services for people living in unnatural relations. However, the Church of England's rules already allow blessing prayers within regular Sunday services for such couples.  Proverbs 25:26 says, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” Franklin Graham preached in world's southernmost city Evangelist Franklin Graham  preached in Ushuaia, Argentina. It's known as the southernmost city in the world. Listen. GRAHAM: “What makes Ushuaia so special are the people. We love the people. If you can't remember anything else tonight, remember this: God loves you. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take our sins. We deserve death. We're guilty of sin. “Bartimaeus had no hope. There are many of you here tonight. You have no hope. Now, Bartimaeus cried at the right time. Jesus was passing by. The Bible says that ‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but he should have everlasting life.' “Will you invite Christ into your heart? Will you trust Him? Come. Come to Jesus.” Hundreds of people turned to Christ through the evangelistic outreach event. Graham wrote on X, “We give God the glory for each one who responded to the invitation to repent of their sins and put their trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.” Eighty-two percent of South Americans identify as Roman Catholic, but evangelicalism has been growing in recent decades.    Graham also plans to visit Peru next month. 21 states challenge mail-order abortion kill pills In the United States, 21 states and 60 members of Congress are challenging mail-order abortion drugs. Louisiana initiated the case, challenging a Biden-era rule from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The rule removed the in-person dispensing requirement for the abortion drug mifepristone.  Erik Baptist with Alliance Defending Freedom stated, “The Biden FDA's unlawful authorization of mail-order abortion drugs was meant to be a loophole around states that choose to protect life.” 41-year-old mother Olympic bobsledder wins gold (audio Olympic theme song) American Olympic bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor  won her first gold medal on Monday. The 41-year-old mother triumphed in the women's monobob event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.  She is now the oldest gold medalist in an individual Olympic event. After the victory, she said this on Instagram: “The moment we prayed for. Glory to God.” Norway has won the most gold medals Nearly 2,900 athletes from over 90 countries are competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics.  So far, Norway has won the most gold medals and the most medals overall. In the medal count, Norway is followed by Italy and the U.S. A podium finish can mean big prize money for athletes. A gold medalist from the U.S. can win $38,000. Athletes from Singapore can make the most for winning an individual event at $792,000.   Christian missionaries sharing Christ & Bibles in Olympic crowds And finally, Evangelicals are sharing the Gospel at the Winter Olympic Games this year. Hundreds of Southern Baptists alongside International Mission Board missionaries are joining the crowds to share Christ and distribute Bibles. Karen Herfurth is in Italy with a group from Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. She said, “This is a chance for Southern Baptists to reach more people and impact more lives! We may never know the difference this makes until we are in Heaven.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 19th, in the year of our Lord 2026. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. One final day in the 50's before the temps drop back into the 30's & 20's later this week. Today is "Fat Tuesday", so load up on beers & food before Lent begins tomorrow! It's also "National Cabbage Day", and "Random Acts of Kindness Day", so be nice!!! In the news this morning, the latest on the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the famous Lovers' Arch in Italy has crumbled into the ocean, and both Robert Duvall and Jesse Jackson have died. In sports, the Badgers are now a ranked team and they play at Ohio State tonight, the Dolphins are cleaning house and have released Tyreek Hill and several other players, the US Women's hockey team beat Sweden yesterday and will play Canada in the Gold medal game on Thursday, and Steph Curry is planning on returning to the 3-point contest in 2027. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and what's new on DVD for New Release Tuesday. Speaking of the Olympics, we updated the medal count, Elana Meyers Taylor wins gold, an athlete from Norway quit mid-race, Colin Jost tries the bobsled, and a plastic surgeon admits to injecting an Olympic athlete's penis. Check out this guy who made an old-school ice cream truck out of snow and is selling ice cream from the truck & donating the money to a children's hospital. A woman in Virginia donated a portion of her liver to her grandfather, and it's officially Girl Scout Cookie season…and one girl scout just set a record for selling 100,000 boxes! Terrible tragedy in Rhode Island as three people are dead after a shooting at local hockey rink. Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports Show joined us just after 8am this morning to talk about the upcoming Brewers season. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a couple who got married by a funeral director, an idiot who got locked in a van he was trying to steal, a kid who choked on a bottlecap while playing beer pong, a dude in England who destroyed a bunch of airport kiosks, and a couple that bought a couch & found a cat inside.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's show we review the top stories from the Beijing Olympic Games beginning with skiing. Lara Gut Behrami added Super G Olympic Champion to her Giant Slalom Bronze Medal in Beijing and the World Champion titles she won in Super G and Giant Slalom in Cortina last year. Austria's Mirjam Puchner divided the Swiss charge by beating Michelle Gisen into the silver medal position. Switzerland made it two in a row when reigning World Downhill Champion Corinne Suter, who was also the World Super G silver medallist behind Lara in 2021, defeated the reigning Olympic Champion Italy's Sofia Goggia by 16 hundredths of a second to take the downhill crown. Sofia's return following a nasty fall in Cortina just over three weeks ago was a remarkable effort and she clearly thought it would be enough to retain her title. Sofia and Corinne are currently one-two in the World Cup Downhill rankings. Italy's Nadia Delgado achieved her first ever podium result with the bronze medal. So we now have two Swiss skiers concurrently holding Olympic and World titles in Downhill and Super G. So far the Swiss have 5 medals in alpine skiing going into the Combined (17th) and Mixed Parallel (19th) events. The women's monobob made its highly anticipated debut with US teammates and rivals Kaillie Humphries and Elana Meyers Taylor the clear medal favorites. In the end it was Kaillie, the newly minted American, who clinched the crown. Kaillie won gold at the two-woman events at the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games. Elana is now the U.S. bobsledder with the most Olympic medals with this silver medal finish. Both women have medaled in every Olympic event they've competed in, sharing the podium in the last four Olympic Winter Games. Canada's Christine de Bruin claimed the bronze to make it a North American sweep. But Germany will prove the biggest challenge in the two-man bobsleigh that takes place on the 18/19th having dominated this World Cup season. We also have an update on the 15 year old Russian skater Kamila Valieva who tested positive to a doping violation in December and was later cleared to compete in Beijing. Snowboarder Chloe Kim makes history at the Games. Plus another record is matched in tennis by Estonian Anett Kontaveit, Emma Gilmour becomes McClaren's first female driver, and the Women's Sports Foundation has a new executive director in Danette Leighton.Hosts: Chris Stafford & Nancy GillenRecorded: February 15, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. WOW. That is what we have to say about this week’s episode. Elana Meyers Taylor embodies Mum’s the Word and did not hesitate to get into the tough conversations about balancing motherhood and being a US team athlete. In a sport like bobsled where a lot of the training and competing focusses on explosive power, we heard about how Elana, under the coaching of her husband Nicholas Taylor (also a USA bobsled athlete) adapted her training to monitoring her heart rate and keeping her power lifts capped below maximum. Morning sickness sometimes reared its ugly head during training runs so they adapted the program to fit with what Elana was capable of that day. This powerhouse of an athlete was instrumental with the recent rule changes for female USA Olympic athletes maternity stipend payments and insurance coverage through pregnancy and one year post pregnancy. This is a momentous step in the right direction in the fight for equality between male and female elite athletes.Ever the competitor, Elana and Nic never went into birth expecting complications and planned for a totally natural birth to match their natural lifestyle of organic food, gluten and dairy free diet, limited medications...a self confessed “crunchy”. After 48 hrs of labor and hours in the 2nd stage (the pushing stage) the couple and medical team made a game time decision to proceed with an emergency C-section.Having experienced her baby spending time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Elana expressed how these was some of the hardest moments of her life and the impact it’s had on her. But it wasn’t an unobstructed path to the top. At one point, Elana was an Olympic hopeful in softball. Having played at the collegiate level for George Washington University, she dreamed of playing professionally. But one horrible try out and not only was her softball career over, but her Olympic dreams were toast. Until she discovered bobsled. On a whim she wrote to the coach, was given a try out, and a few months later found herself at the top of the run at the Olympic Trials. Weeks later she raced in Vancouver and took bronze. Since then she has won gold in World Championships, medaled in two more Olympics, married a fellow bobsledder, and even competed for the National Women’s Rugby Sevens team. Faced with Olympic disappointment and an achilles injury, Elana has learned to value the journey and experiences more than the outcome. She chooses to see bobsled as an aspect of her gifts, not the whole of them and serves with the Women’s Sports Foundation to advocate for equality and support for young girls in sports around the world.   Learn more here: https://www.hopesports.org/redeeming-dreams-after-mistakes For further information about trips with Hope Sports visit www.hopesports.org.   For more about our host, visit www.laurawilkinson.com and follow her on Facebook and Instagram.   ___ Produced by Simpler Media

Key Links: Lauryn Williams Website Twitter Instagram Worth Winning Financial Planning Book: The Oval Office Worth Listening Podcast ___ Lauryn Williams could beat her family dog home at age nine and raced a hologram of the legendary Florence Joyner at a museum until she won. It was no secret that she was fast. After high school she accepted an academic scholarship to the University of Miami for track and by age 20, she not only won the NCAA Championship, but posted the second fastest time 100 meter time in the world, was the fastest American woman in the event, and was catapulted into the Olympic Trials. She took silver in the 100 meter event in Athens, but a botched baton pass in the 4x100 relay left the favored American women empty handed.  The opportunity for redemption presented itself again four years later, but the nightmare replayed itself as the baton was yet again bumbled during the hand-off. Lauryn discovered the mercilessness of the media, being smeared as a “failure” and a “let-down.” She took time off from track to discover what she had to offer beyond her speed, and returned a year later with a new mentality towards the sport. Recognizing the value of her journey, her intangible influence, and her resilience, Lauryn headed into the 2012 Olympics in London on the relay once again where the American women became a gold medal, world record team. Her following retirement didn’t last long, as she happened upon an opportunity to pursue bobsled for the 2014 Winter Olympics. She went into the Olympic trials with only one month of practice and went on to win the silver medal in Sochi with partner Elana Meyers Taylor. History was made that day as Lauryn became the first American woman to medal in both the summer and winter Olympics. Today, Lauryn is a financial planner, author, and podcaster who focuses on helping elite athletes set goals for their future beyond sport. President of the Women Sports Foundation and top USA bobsleigher gave an in-depth chat about her career, head injuries and women’s issues. We spoke to her just before the World Championships where, despite being one of the favourites to win, she crashed out and suffered her fifth concussion. It’s not clear if she will retire or continue competing but this outspoken interview is evidence of her leadership skills. Also, Elana spoke well about knowing the limits of your own body.“A lot of women have this tendency to try to ‘tough it out’. I think (because) there’s a societal stigma that we are weaker sex... we push through things when we shouldn’t necessarily.”LINKS:Elana Meyers Taylor TwitterEd Knowles TwitterVideo of last week’s Ramla Ali podcast
